This place has a very cool ambiance and the lighting is very well organized. Our main server was very nice, friendly and considerate. Our first server asked us whether we want sparkling water or tap water and my girlfriend asked for sparkling water. They brought a bottle of sparkling water for the table and at the end they charged us $6 for it. This kind of actions in the service really brings down the experience of a restaurant for me. About the food I would say they try hard to be innovative and it was a hit or miss. The two small plates that we ordered based on recommendations from our server were Charred Eggplant Plate and Roasted Halumi. They were both great. Especially the charred eggplant was an explosion of flavors. The mixture of pomegranate sauce with labne sauce that was modified by adding herb was exquisite. The lamb shank with maitake mushroom was cooked very well and fell of the bone but the combination wasn't well suited and the spice level of the lamb shank was ok. I personally think cuscus might have been a better combo with the lamb shank than bulgur. For dessert we ordered Konafi cake. It was very similar to kunefe but filled with labne and cream on top, definitely not my favorite dessert, since the combination of salty labne and the Chantilly cream didn't work, even though on the paper that doesn't sound bad. Their mint tea was good though and served in a beautiful pot. From my experience , I wouldn't really recommend this place. read more

Some of the best Israeli food I had in DC. When we arrived the waiter was friendly letting us know that many of the dishes are tapas style and recommended sharing dishes as well as recommending his favorites. My friends and I started with the hummus and pita while we decided on what else to order. We order dishes individually instead of all at once so we could get a sense of how many dishes we wanted. My favorite dish we ordered was the charred eggplant or fried cauliflower. There were so many flavors and textures that the dish got better with each bite. We also ordered the roasted halumi, salmon kabob, and Israeli salad. We ended the night sharing the Konafi cake which had which was the perfect end to the night. read more

Delightful! Ordered to go and everything was on time and well packaged. I will have to come here to dine in too, both because it was good and because the menu is slightly different for takeout and dining in (pretty clever). The red pepper and tomato Matbukha with sugar snap peas and the Garlic Labne were my favorite. Fun to try, but prefer the hummus. Carrot Falafel (5/5) - Crispy and refreshing with a subtle carrot flavor. The bite size falafels were scrumptious! Charred Eggplant (4/5) - Juicy eggplant with zesty yogurt labne sauce packed with spices. Trumpet Mushrooms Kebab (4/5) - Meaty mushrooms with seasoned yellow rice. Vegetable Tagine (5/5) - Vegetarian version of Shepherd Pie. Roasted potatoes, tomato, onions, and other veggies cooked in spicy tomato sauce stuffed flaky phyllo dough. Unique dish and among my favorites of the evening. Roasted Halumi (2/5) - The cubed cheese was dense and disappointing. It was tough to bite into. I probably waited to long to try it. If you get it - eat it right away as the cheese gets very stiff. Halva-Chocolate Pot De Creme (5/5) - My favorite dessert! The decadent chocolate mousse with caramel bits of halva was the perfect sweet ending to our meal. If love chocolate and want to get a taste of Halva, then definitely get this! Don't question it. Just get it. And thank me later. For the kebabs you really can't go wrong. That flavored rice is incredible! Any meat is really good. But truly its that hawaij-spiced rice that won my heart. I could eat this every day! Yum! Desserts were luscious. That chocolate pot de creme was something straight for lovers. This place is nice if you like Mediterranean flavors. The food is Palestinian/Israeli. I would most likely not come back only because while the flavors are very interesting, it's not flavors I crave. I was a bit disappointed, however, to learn that they no longer do a Happy Hour, despite it being advertised on their website. My thoughts: why would I pay $4 ever again for mediocre hummus from the grocery store when I could have this beauty for triple the price! So good it seemed like a bargain. Only knocking a star because the cocktail I ordered, the Halva World Away, was so-so. And the kebab dish seemed pretty standard, with almost-too-dry rice making up the bulk of the meal. (3.5 stars) A solid dinner, not sure I'd make the trek out from downtown over to Cleveland park just for it, but glad I tried it. The vegetable dishes are definitely the highlights of the meal. Both the grilled brocolli and the charred eggplants are a must. The pita itself is better than the hummus and the dips which is a little disappointing, because you end to kind of just wanting to eat the pita on its own. I will say I was pretty disappointed with all of the meats we had because the kabobs were what I was especially looking forward to. Sababa, not to be confused with the awesome (pun intended), now-defunct falafel stand of the name, does a good job showcasing Israeli cuisine. Everything was tasty, however, I did not leave wowed, and nothing compelled me back. To be fair, I did go for Restaurant Week, but I believe most, if not all, of the items are on their regular menu. I did love the salatim, which includes pickles, hummus tahina, cucumbers, and a beet/tahina mixture, and rye pita, topped with olive oil and za'atar, as it should be. The hummus is super creamy and delicious. The pita is served warmed. I liked that the pickles included cauliflower and other vegetables. The fried cauliflower and roasted halloumi were fine. My friend's entree was the kushari (koshary), which I had always thought was Egyptian, and she enjoyed it. The harissa chicken didn't taste like it was marinated in harissa, but there was a fresh, spicy version on the side. My halva pot de creme had some of the best tasting halva I've ever had, and I appreciated that. Her konafi (kataifi) was fine. Drinks also did not wow. Again, tasty, but my Halva World Away and Zephyr Breeze were not out of this world. The hostesses were a bit unfriendly, but dinner service was all around great. The restaurant is beautiful, and the patio is nice. And while I did tell a friend I'd rather go to Zahav (and to be honest, I'll probably get both there and to Shaya before returning), I do think this is a good introduction to Israeli cuisine. read more

I was so so excited to try this Israeli place and it did not disappoint even when I ordered carryout for restaurant week. The meal was spectacular! It came with an amazing cucumber salad, cauliflowers with golden raisins, chicken kebab with harissa sauce, and a delicious pistachio phyllo dessert. I went to Sababa with girlfriends for a birthday dinner. Yusuf was a delightful server -- offering us recommendations and highlights of the menu, as well as laughter and complimentary champagne for the occasion. We split the charred eggplant, both hummus dishes, carrot salad, halloumi, falafel, smoked trout, and a salmon kebab between four of us and cleaned every plate. Nicely seasoned with herbs to spare! Cute, festive spot perfect for a date night. Small intimate feeling space but still manages to have a good amount of seating because they have an upstairs too. I came on valentine's day which had a set menu with different variations from their everyday menu. I am torn about this place because the menu was so hit or miss. Some of their dishes are to die for, and I haven't stopped thinking about them since I left, and some things on the menu are a total miss. Starting with the good - the halloumi is delicious. The variation we got had a tart and tangy orange marmalade that accompanied the salty cheese and some crunchy pistachios for a perfect bite. The Bastilla was probably my favorite thing of the night and something I would come back to Sababa just to get. It has light and crispy filo dough stuffed with chicken mixture full of spices and is served over flavorful smokey sauces. The hummus we started with was also excellent with a delicious tahini whip in the center and some warm fluffy bread. One of dishes that fell flat for me was the grilled artichoke. Parts were so chewy they seemed inedible, which I'm sure there were parts we weren't supposed to eat because there was an empty bowl served with the dish but we just didn't understand. And if a dish is supposed to be eaten in a certain way or there are parts that aren't edible then the dish should be explained when served - we pretty much gave up on this one. The other dish I was disappointed with was the roasted duck. The duck was cooked really well and served over a nice sauce but the meat was crazy salty. And I like salty things but this was next level. The dish would have been amazing if they just brought down the salt level a little. Beyond this, the service was attentive and friendly and they had some nice refreshing drinks. I would come back just for that bastilla and maybe to try some more of the menu. read more

The garlic Labne and the honey Harissa tahina were top tier, but they all were delicious. Had to get a second order of pita to wipe the little bowls clean of every bite. Sababa exceeded expectations in some respects and fell short in others. This Israeli restaurant offers some great dishes at great prices. Our server was exceptionally knowledgeable about the menu, and our meals came very quickly. We came for brunch and took advantage of their "brunch feast" that consists of one small plate and one large plate for a modest price of $22! Roasted Halumi (small plate) (5/5): Their Roasted Halumi was perfect. The Halumi was a great texture and taste. It came with a delicious sweet sauce comprised of dates and honey that helped the dish stand out. Charred Eggplant (small plate) (5/5): This was my favorite dish of the meal. Their eggplant was perfectly cooked. It was so soft and tender it melted in your mouth, yet it held firm enough to be cut with a knife. It didn't become soggy or mushy, which so often happens with eggplant dishes. Not only was the eggplant delicious, but the pomegranates and pistachios added a fragrant and sweet flavor that complemented the eggplant very thoroughly. I highly recommend this small plate! Chicken Thighs with Harissa Marinade Kebab (3/5): I love going to a Mediterranean restaurant with dark meat chicken. It can be hard to find, but when I see it, I have to get it. White meat chicken kebabs are often dry and lacking in flavor. These dark meat chunks, unfortunately, were average in tenderness and flavor. I loved the spicy harissa sauce, though. Lastly, the rice was also average. It wasn't the buttery, fluffy rice that the eastern Mediterranean is famous for. Lamb & Beef Kofta Kebab (5/5): This kebab was much better than the Chicken Thigh. The minced meat was so tender and flavorful. It didn't have even the slightest hint of a metallic flavor. This was far above the average lamb or beef kabob, and I see why it is one of their most popular items. Their brunch portions were perfect. They were a little smaller than what you will get at most Mediterranean restaurants, but I think their moderate sizes help them improve the quality of their dishes. Also, I liked that after eating this brunch, I didn't feel bloated or sluggish. In conclusion, Sababa barely earns five stars. If their service had been less impressive, they certainly wouldn't have received such a good rating based on their food alone. Yousef went out of his way to make our meal special and like we were part of the Sababa family. He was highly knowledgeable about the dishes and ingredients and did not lead us astray in his recommendations. He was one of the highlights of our brunch! We ordered nearly everything on the menu and let me say, there was not one mediocre plate. However, there were some standouts that I am still drooling over two weeks later. The charred eggplant was cooked to perfection - crispy and roasted on the outside and tender on the inside. The heavenly rice dish, Kushari, was also a highlight - full of interesting flavors and textures that seemed to blend together perfectly. The Halumi was also divine. The falafel is some of the best falafel I have ever tried. But, one thing is clear - you cannot come here without getting one of their egg Benedict served on a latke. Our table ordered the Sabih and Lamb options and inhaled them both. Also, if you are partaking in the bottomless mimosas, your glass will never be empty. Let's start with the smoked trout small plate. Really smokey trout morsels in a complex muhammara sauce. OK. I looked it up. Peppers, bread crumbs, walnuts, garlic, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses, cumin, hot peppers, salt, EVOO. No wonder the end result was a decadent medley of flavors. And I didn't even get to the grilled cucumbers. I highly recommend the smoked trout. On to the charred eggplant. A blend of herbs in a yogurt sauce with pomegranate and pistachios, help enhance the smokey eggplant. Can something this healthy really taste this good? Small plate number 3. Grilled broccoli. They are set over a tahini sauce that contains charred broccoli pieces, roasted garlic, and chili oil. The heat of the chili comes on late, and remains in the background where it belongs. We concluded with the large plate lamb shank. 5 hours in a low heat oven left the lamb uber tender and falling off the bone. My friend and I were in the area around 5:15 PM on Saturday and hungry, so we aimlessly wandered down Connecticut Ave until we saw Sababa. We loved the decor, especially all of the little lamps, and thought it looked like a cute spot. But to be certain, we also checked Yelp and it didn't seem like there was anywhere better for dinner that was close by so in we went! Our server was super friendly and chatty. You could tell she was excited about the food and wanted to make sure that we got the best recs! We settled on the Salatim, Hummus Tahina, Roasted Halumi, and Fried Cauliflower. It ended up being way too much food, but was delicious! The Salatim was a nice assortment of dips and salads. Big fan of the salads, though I guess they were fairly standard, and the sauces were fun. We couldn't quite figure out what was in two of the sauces, but they were so tasty. The Hummus Tahina was nice and smooth, though the dips that came with the Salatim were more flavorful so it ended up masking the Hummus flavor. The pita that came with both was nice and warm, and the pepper on it was perfect. My friend loved the Roasted Halumi. I'm actually not a huge halumi fan, though I did like the dates and general flavor. The Fried Cauliflower had great flavor, and there was more of the smooth hummus, which for some reason tasted more flavorful than the hummus we had ordered even though I think it's the same one! The cauliflower was a tad too oily, but still pretty tasty. Service was great! Sababa used to be one of my favorites, where I would go for a delicious Middle Eastern meal. Last night my meal was a disappointment, and I wonder whether they have changed chefs or direction. In past visits, I remember the salatim having one or two selections with vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, but last night 4 our of 5 were dips. Two were so fiery peppered that I couldn't eat them. My husband did- food shouldn't go to waste- but then his stomach hurt after dinner. The labeneh was meh, leaving only the hummus and a vegetable containing selection, that were tasty. We eat hummus nearly every day at home, so I wouldn't have selected an appetizer solely on that basis. Kushari, ordered separately, was good. For our entree we had lamb and beef kofta, which was dried out, and spiced heavily with cloves. Even though this was our entire entree, we ate only half. Although I described the specifics above, my biggest disappointment was that nothing had that delicious combination of Middle Eastern spices we had so enjoyed previously. read more

Tastiness: I love middle-eastern food and "modern Israeli" cuisine is a close sibling of it, so I knew what to expect and that I would enjoy it. What I did not expect was the BEST hummus I've had (creamier than anything I tried before) topped with strawberries and watermelon micro-pieces. I also did not expect to be impressed by another staple-dish, the humble falafel - it was made of corn and super crispy and tasty! The Israeli mixed grill on a bed of rice was very tasty and enough to share among two people (with two apps) who are not too hungry. Oh - and the Kunefe - an interesting apricot-twist to a classic - it was tasty, but not what I expected. Cleanliness/COVID prevention: Not all the wait-staff was wearing masks, but most were (July 2021 visit) and the tables were nicely spaced even indoors. There are outdoor dining options, but need to ensure you specify your preference for outdoor dining when making the reservations. Price: Fair for NW DC. Presentation: The food smelled too good for us to photograph it, but the presentation was nice. Not Michelin* nice, but NICE. Ambiance: Chill relaxing music, complementing the food and Israeli vibe. Everyone from our hostess, to the waiter, to the (I'm assuming) manager who came over to check on us, was fantastic. The restaurant is also really beautiful with dim lighting and interesting decor. Now, the food. The Roasted Halumi is just something you need to do. It was so rich and creamy and unique, and basically covered dessert for me even though it wasn't super sweet. We also had the lamb kabobs, which were pretty good. We ordered the lamb shank, but they ran out and replaced it with a huge portion of lamb shoulder - very yummy.
