Read the yelp reviews and decided to give it a try since it is near my parent's. Hostess was very nice and attentive, as was our waiter. We were able to quickly find a table for two. I ordered the sauteed spinach, which is nice and rich but not too much flavor, but I just love Parmesan on everything so I added it for extra flavor. Also the funnel parmesan was a good appetizer as well. One of my entrees was the Rigatoni which is made al dente were the pasta is still kind of hard (that's what she said) grow up guys!. So if you prefer your pasta softer then ask them to cook it a bit more. It has italian saugage and meatballs. Sauce was good and went well with the bread. Also had the Spaghetti al Limone (Lemon spaghetti) and added grilled chicken to it ($4 extra). Loved the texture of the spaghetti and really enjoyed this meal. Place is nice to dine and good for dates, because of the cozy atmosphere and dim lighting. Had dinner on their patio last night to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday. The patio is really nice, but we found the food to be nothing special. The chicken was overcooked and tough. Think marinara sauce can't make an appearance at breakfast? Think eggs, meatballs, and sausage don't go together? Fughettabout it! I thought "eggs ragu" with a runny egg, marinara sauce, and meatballs and sausage was rather unusual for breakfast, but my boyfriend insisted it was good. We ordered three breakfast entrees - the eggs ragu, mushroom and fontina omelette, and the pancakes - because they were only $7-8 each and came with sides! (See picture) Indeed, the eggs ragu were really good, though the marinara sauce almost overpowered the yolk. The pancake was super soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside with dribbles of fresh fruit. The omelette came with fresh greens, roasted potatoes, and toast, and they did not skimp on the mushrooms. The service was excellent. We were brought water right away and received refills without asking. The food comes out quickly and the wait staff is very attentive. The coffee and cappuccinos are excellent; I believe they use Illy coffee but I could be mistaken. The amount of food we ordered barely fit on our little table but we ate it all. Definitely go for brunch 10am-4pm, but get there early - we were the first ones at 10:15am but the place quickly filled up! read more

BEWARE - Do not order delivery. I've been to Saggio many times for brunch and had a good experience, but I recently ordered delivery for the first time and learned my lesson. The mac and cheese was extremely runny and bland with TWO WHOLE SLICES OF AMERICAN CHEESE ON TOP and 3 chunks of stale bread. Absolutely disgusting. According to the seamless reviews, other people have received the same thing, but I didn't heed their warning since my in-person experiences were okay. We were waiting for one additional member of our party, and they wanted to know how long it would be until he arrived. They said they normally wouldn't seat us without the complete party but he'd make an exception. It wasn't a warm welcome & really unnecessary since the restaurant was empty. Great place in the neighborhood. Extremely accommodating. Beautiful decor. I love their cappuccinos. They have a great pale ale in a can called Pork Slap. I would definitely recommend this place. They have a brilliant salmon on the menu. One time I came here and they had game meat. It was a wonderful rabbit stew. I also love their skirt steak. I usually get it medium rare and substitute the arugula salad for a creamy mash potato and tasty gravy. Julissa is a beautiful and very bubbly and warm young lady that will make you feel very comfortable with her charming smile and witty side banter. This place is overpriced and underwhelming. I ordered the squid ink linguini and sent it back because it contained shrimp (I am allergic) and the description said it did not contain shellfish. Then had the Spaghetti Limone which was bland. No offer of parmesan or black pepper at the table. Server left empty glasses on the table throughout meal. I had to ask three different times for silverware. Given a small table near the fire exit despite entering at 5:45 PM and restaurant was mostly empty. Just finished the best meal I've eaten in 2020 so far. Which, standards have been low this year, but this place was AMAZING. We were seeing places in the area and the realtor suggested this place in the area. We got here a bit before 6 and were the only ones there, joined a bit later by those who enjoy dining a bit later like we normally do. Started with fried calamari and I got the liver pate crostini from their specials menu. The pate was so good- I forgot just how good liver pate done right is! The crostini had a garlic flavor to it as well which went with the spread nicely. And it was a good size piece for the price- larger than I assume crostini to be! The calamari was impeccable- just the right amount of breading, just out of the frier, delicious marinara sauce- oh my! What a great start! Then I got the chicken piccata special; a classic dish done perfectly. And the fresh pasta really was a highlight! A lot of times it can kind of slip into the role of "side" on a chicken dish, but here it did no such thing. Breading and sauce for the chicken/pasta was also very bright and acidic, perfect to accent the dish the way it should be! We both ended with the best tiramisu I've had at a place in NYC so far. We hope to be making an offer on a place nearby soon and will definitely be stopping by many more times in the future when we do! read more

You can't go wrong at Saggio. Dinner or brunch, the food is consistently delicious, the service is always kind and thoughtful, and the attention to detail is never lacking. I have tried almost everything on the menu, from main courses to deserts, and really everything is delicious. Fresh ingredients and by far the best Italian food on this side of Arthur Avenue. They have a great children's menu too, which our children always ask for. In the summer the backyard cafe is a transporting experience. It was busy at first and the space is very tight on any day, but when we finally got in, management and staff were very accommodating, helping us put away our stroller and providing us a high chair. The Lasagna meaty but not cheesy as promised. The veal ragu was a huge let down and tasted like something that could have come out of a can (with ver little veal to actually note). But the skirt steak was well grilled and the Salmon and accompanying vegetables were cooked to perfection It's just too bad that this Italian eatery failed in their pasta productions, making better impressions with fish and meat instead. But we appreciated the friendly service and hands-on managers. I RECOMMEND: Ordering a la carte. The specials were not as flavourful or well thought out as the random selections turned out to be. Felt like the daiiys fell of the factory line. Plus they came in smaller proportions. EXTRA TIP: Call in... even if half an hour ahead to make a reservation or advance your party's arrival. "Woo hoo! As good as it gets" = 5 stars on Yelp. I wouldn't exactly say that. For the neighborhood, this is a gem though. Dishes are definitely priced on a range, which is really nice for groups with varying budgets. The cheaper/simple dishes, however, I didn't think were outstanding. The gnocchi was too mushy for my liking and the sauce was kind of bland. PROS: That being said, the seafood was incredible. Some of the best calamari I have had. Their espresso martini was also great. My Dad loved the ribs and my Mom loved the Salmon. There is not much Italian in the neighborhood, and their new outdoor patio is outstanding! This. Place. Is. Awesome. I've lived in the neighborhood for 3.5 years and just had my first experience here last night. Seriously kicking myself for waiting so long to try!!! My boyfriend and I were going out on a Saturday night for a Valentine's Day date. They do not take reservations, but we arrived around 10:30 and had no trouble getting a table. To start, we ordered a delicious bottle of Sauvignon- yum! For our entrees, I chose the Spaghetti Al Limone with chicken and my boyfriend ordered the Tagliata Toscano (skirt steak). The spaghetti was absolutely delightful! So light and fresh- I ate almost the entire plate of it with no shame. My boyfriend's skirt steak was cooked the *perfect* medium well. We also chowed down on not one, but two, sides of garlic bread. Veryyy garlic-y, but we both love garlic so no complaints there. For dessert we had the Ricotta Cheesecake- which was served with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and strawberries. Afterwards we made our way up to the bar and enjoyed some St. Germain cocktails that the bartender whipped up. Overall we had a wonderful experience and exemplary service! I am a huge sucker for a good after work drink, and I've decided that this is the BEST happy hour in Upper Manhattan. My boyfriend and I came here for an early dinner on our anniversary. We saw they had happy hour from 4-7 s o we decided to sit at the bar and order a few drinks before we got a table. We ended up staying at the bar for the rest of the evening! The cocktails were all fantastic - between the two of us we tried the Fort Tryon, the GWB, and the J-181 which was my favorite - Hendricks, grapefruit and St. Germaine! We also got two glasses of the house wine when our entrees came out, $4.5 for a generous pour which is a great deal. Our bartender was also super friendly and she did a great job of keeping up with her customers while also chatting with some of the regulars and creating a really fun atmosphere at the bar. The real star of the show here however was the food. We ordered a few appetizers to start - a HUGE plate of calamari for $8, which was neither too greasy or too chewy, and came with a generous portion of marinara for dipping. We also ordered three sliders ($3 each for happy hour) - beef with gorgonzola, veggie with pomodoro, and beef with spicy grandma sauce. These were incredible. There was enough sauce that we were able to soak up the sauce with the bread and the meatball with every delicious bite. The veggie meatball was rich and hearty, though the beef with gorgonzola was probably my favorite - I was scraping some of the sauce off the plate after we had eaten the slider! Even though the two of us were almost stuffed after the appetizers we decided to order a small pasta dish and salad to split between the two of us. We got the spaghetti al limone ($12) and the black kale caesar ($10). Both dishes were in. Freaking. Credible. The caesar had several large pieces of shaved parmesan on top, and the pasta had an amazing balance of lemon, butter, and garlic flavors. The portions were huge, and we ended up taking a bunch home. The waitress was very courteous and kind, but she didn't come back to check on us and the service was extremely slow. The food was nothing special and it was horribly bland. My friend got the steak and it was greasy and mostly fat. He couldn't even eat it all. My ravioli was undercooked and flavorless. The portions were also very small and overall it was simply a disappointing experience food-wise. Saggio is in the neighborhood of my daughter's apartment and we were there to celebrate my husbands birthday. What a treat it was for all of us. Overall Excellent! I will be back. Great menu, with a lot of mouth-watering choices, but not overwhelming (which some places can't pull off quite as well... I don't like big, long menus). My wife and I started with the Saggio Caeser salad, which is black kale, anchovy's mixed in the dressing, croutons and finely sliced parmesan cheese on top. For our entree's, my wife got the Ricotta & Spinach Ravioli, which was pretty friggin good... I had the Black Linguine, which is Squid ink pasta, calamari and spicy tomato sauce. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!! I loved every bite. Our daughter had the spaghetti and meatballs... and loved it. The pasta was cooked al dente, AS IT SHOULD BE! Thank you. Tonight was a sad night for me and my date, we have been stopping by our old favorite spots the past week because we will be moving soon. We had our first dinner date here and remember our dinner being very good. Tonight unfortunately left us very disappointed and quite appalled. Our burrata app was broken and sloppily placed on the thickest slices of very hard unripe tomatoes. Our calamari and marinara sauce were room temperature and cold, sauce seemed like it was out of the refrigerator. We looked past that and anxiously waited for our main courses... 15-20 minutes passed since we had finished our appetizers and the waitress finally came to our table and asked us if we would be interested in dessert, confused we reminded her we had ordered main dishes as well. After another decently long length of time a male server brought us our mains. I went with the roasted chicken and he got the pork chop. My chicken was pretty dry sadly but nothing compared to his pork chop. It was so overdone that the bone was brittle, completely inedible he took one bite and had to spit it out in his napkin because it was comparable to dehydrated meat. We both picked on my chicken and waited for the waitress to come back passed us, 30 minutes had passed with her walking around not coming to our table. I finally had to rudely wave her down verbally to explain the situation, we expressed our disappointment with the pork chop (didn't even mention any of the other issues) and she said all she could do was "let the kitchen know so it doesn't happen to anyone else" she then brought us our check with the uneaten dish still on it. Surprised since we both work in NYC Hospitality we asked to speak to a MOD and was informed they actually do not have a manager on duty. So we bit our tongues paid for our meal and left so very, very disappointed. I wish I could give 0 stars, lack of proper management is definitely showing in your food preparation, presentation and I really hope not but nyc food health standards with the temperatures our dishes were brought out in. read more
