A friend of mine was in the mood for Vietnamese and suggested meeting at this place for lunch on a Sunday. Located not far from the 395/95 Highway entrances/exits, Saigon City is a moderately sized family run restaurant. Service started off good as we were placing our order but after they were placed the waiter pulled out a magic trick by *poof*.....disappearing. Don't worry though folks, later on he did another magic trick to reappear....with the bill. I started off with the crispy shrimp egg rolls for an appetizer. They actually look like samosas with their triangle shaped fried pastry shell. Once I bit into it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the roll was packed with shrimp...albeit ground up shrimp. They were some of these best egg rolls I've ever had. The texture contrasts between the fried shell and the ground up shrimp really worked well. I definitely wish I had ordered more, especially after receiving my entree. My main course was the Tai Pho. A fairly large bowl of noodles, broth and eye of round steak. The noodles were properly cooked and then after that it was downhill. The meat was kinda tough and flavorless. The much more egregious issue was the lack of flavor in the broth. Very very disappointing. The prices are decent and parking is convenient BUT when it comes to this place, I think I have anal glaucoma, which in layman's terms means I can't see my a$$ returning. read more

SIgh, I have such a love hate relationship with this place!!! I love their pho, it is delicious but the cleanliness and service is what destroys this place! Rapidly becoming a common lunch and dinner spot for me, this little unassuming place dishes up wonderful food and very reasonable prices. Saturday stopped in with a friend for some Vermicelli noodles with crispy pork and spring rolls - one of my favorite and go-to Vietnamese dishes. We go both crispy and summer rolls and I had a refreshing thai spice bubble tea. The bill came to $30 for a massive amount of food, basically leaving me stuffed for the day (and no room for "grazing" at our next stop Costco). I've also gotten Pho Ga from here for take-out several times. With the Pho, as with other dishes I've observed landing on nearby tables, the portions are very generous and I've yet to finish my order whatever I've gotten (even having arrived with a growling stomach). I love how they package food for take-out too. Sometimes I've gotten dinner to-go, and an order of Pho to take to work for lunch the next day (broth is in one container and everything else in another so things don't get soggy overnight YAY). I cried when its sister location in Landmark closed since it was so close to my house. But this isn't too far for me to go, and while there are some other Vietnamese places I enjoy more, this place has good food, is a good value, its easy to park and convenient to other places I frequent in the area. read more

The Ph place in Springfield! Although most of their menu consists of other 'oriental' eats, and Vietnamese foods, their claim and best offerings are their Ph - Vietnamese noodle soups. They offer many, many varieties in two sizes each reasonably priced. The place is clean, the staff is helpful (although don't expect much conversation), incredible view of Marriott, Dunkin Donuts and the Dodge dealer! Otherwise stick to the Ph it's great! My BFF and I were craving for bubble tea and didn't want to venture outside of Springfield due to the inclement weather, so we settled on Saigon City. I ordered the black milk tea and she ordered the taro. Both were in smoothie form, which I wasn't used to because black milk is usually just liquid, but it wasn't too bad -- it was just different. My BFF had chunks of taro in hers -- but it tasted like real taro, (not the powdered form!) which is a good sign for freshness. They only accept credit card if the transaction is over $15, so be prepared with cash if you plan to spend less than that, which can be inconvenient. Even though we only ordered bubble tea, we were allowed to sit at a table and chat, which was nice. Next time, I'll be back to try their bun bo hue! read more

Albeit lukewarm and not super hot. The rice noodles were also very good. All downhill from there. The bowl contained ZERO round eye or fat brisket. And a SINGLE little meatball, a SINGLE piece of tripe, and a SINGLE piece of tendon. But 20 boring pieces of well done flank. Why????? Off day? I don't know. I won't be back. One of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in the Northern Virginia area, Saigon City Restaurant, might be small, but it's always a good place to go if you're looking for fast, cheap, yet quality Vietnamese food. My mom and I always stop here after long road trips or days where she doesn't feel like cooking. I don't really come by for the Pho, but there are a number of dishes that I would recommend. When it comes to appetizers, you can't beat the shrimp cha gio (egg/spring rolls) or the goi cuon (summer rolls). I can never visit without ordering one of the two. Fried chicken wings are something you don't normally expect to order in a Vietnamese restaurant, but you will not be disappointed after biting in. They give you so many that you might even have leftover deliciousness for the next day. Another dish that you can't go wrong with is the bun thit nuong (vermicelli noodles with grilled pork). It's probably the best I've ever had because the pork doesn't come with much fat. The meat is also grilled to the point where it's still tender, but also perfectly charred and crispy. There are a lot of great things to try here, but the items that I mentioned above are consistently good. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, I would look to soups like Hu Tieu Nam Vang (clear noodles soup) or Bun Bo Kho (Beef stew with vermicelli noodles). However, there is always a risk that the broth might not be as tasty as other places in the region. Overall, Saigon City is always good for a quick fix to your Vietnamese food cravings. The five stars are here because this is the BEST Pho noodle soup I've ever had. The soup is packed with flavors---you can taste the meaty base, the spices put together, mmm. The meat is also some of the better ones I've had. The well-done brisket is not too hard and the other pieces all taste okay. The noodles are not too hard and stuck together, and are pretty good. For other parts of the restaurant, I haven't enjoyed much of it. The bubble tea is packaged and doesn't taste great; the coconut milk tastes a little light; the baozi dumpling is too thick with bread; I once ordered a beef dish but the meat was very dry and hard to chew. But the pho is what I came for, and is what keeps me coming back. read more

Good PHO! Many others have already stated it, but here it goes again - lots of meat, lots of portion. The essence of any good PHO (much like Japanese ramein) is the broth - the broth is excellent. Tasty, yet not overpowering, not salty - to add "zing," add some of the chili sauce. My wife does not eat the pho, but she tries the various rice dishes - no complaints. So to me, its a good sign. I found the place about four years ago because my realtor's office is close by. Not in an easily accessible area, it is located in an mixed area - mix of hotels, car dealers, strip malls, Duncan Donuts is located diagonally across the street, a block or two away from an Afghan kabob restaurant which I have yet to try. Its a good sign when the patrons of the restaurant are Vietnamese as well as an eclectic mix of Caucasians as well as Mexicans. We all know the value of good, affordable, tasty "chow." While there's a few Viet spots in Springfield, the Pho at Saigon City has my vote! They say they only accept credit cards if the order is $15 or more, but I've managed to swipe my Visa for a bill of $12. Hey, the fact that they actually accept Credit is good enough for this pho-lover. Five stars for having two flatscreen TVs for football on Sunday. 3.5 stars for the food, overall. Started with summer rolls - decent, although the rice paper was stale and not soft. I got the Saigon City Combo soup - the broth was light and needed flavoring. I added the chili sauce and voila - instant improvement. The soup was more than enough to fill me up with rice noodles, shredded egg, chicken and shrimp. Good alternative to pho or mi kho. We also got the duck salad (small size apparently) that was MORE than enough for the two of us. Very large portion that we ended up taking to the afternoon football party. My buddies and I came in looking for Pho and after waiting about 30 minutes we only got Spring Rolls and not even 1 refill on our drinks. Then a family of 4 came in and got their food before us, followed by another group of 2 that also ordered and got their food before us. This place sucks. My advice, go somewhere else and eat. It seems as though they were mainly serving the call in orders first and neglected to pay attention to the patrons waiting inside the restaurant. This is my go-to pho place in the Springfield area. Not saying it's outstanding or really stands out from other pho places, but it is better than average I'd say. Their service isn't that great, but nothing unexpected really from a pho place. Inside looks clean enough but there's still the oddly familiar dirty feeling from the establishment that you get from pho places. Pho is pretty good. Broth is nice, and meat usually good and plenty of it. Their chicken wings are good, usually made on spot so you get it nice and hot. Eggrolls/springrolls are alright, nothing too special though. I have not tried their other dishes, and probably won't to be honest. I love pho haha. read more

She ordered spring rolls, a beef pho bowl, and a hot coffee and I got papaya salad with beef, spicy lemongrass chicken with rice, and a mango bubble tea. We each enjoyed all of our food. The lemongrass chicken did not have a strong lemongrass flavor, but did have an enjoyable spicy sauce. Portions were good - the pho bowl was a medium, which was just right (a large would have been too much). Service was good at the start, a little slow at the end (they seemed a little understaffed for the lunch crowd that was there). The place was clean and well lit from the windows on this sunny day. Total was about $34 + tip. Definitely a place we'll go back to when in the mood for Vietnamese food. read more

OK, first of all, the building looked familiar, because it was a renovated McDonald's drive through. When we walked it, it lacked in character but instead felt like a fast food joint. The servers really did not take the time to ask you if you had any questions. Since this was our first time, we had some questions and the answers were pretty basic, no real explanation. We did not get any Pho but decided on the rice and noodle dishes. Unlike other Vietnamese places, this place served very small portions for what they charged. The noodles seems to stick to each other and the rice heaping was very large, compared to the few pieces of pork served with it. Probably would not come back. This place may look outdated when it comes to decor but we always get great food and drinks and never leave unhappy with what we got. The prices doesn't hurt either, it's reasonable even for the prized location of the real estate it's in. Accessibility is great being in the center of town and there's ample parking all the time. The proprietor is always present and well engaged with the patrons, always ready to address any issue or answer any questions and the busmen/busboys are eager to serve and very polite to customers. I give this fixture of an eatery 5 thumbs up, and hope that the downtown Springfield rehabilitation will not drive it away in the future to come. read more

Small Vietnamese Restaurant that really hits the spot. The typical Vietnamese restaurants are not always high on décor/atmosphere/service, but we really enjoyed the food - the service was pretty good, too. The décor was better executed than most restaurants that generally have old chairs and folding tables (we even saw some movies on TV that were recently in theaters). This place had darker wood and some folding screens and plants - not the best, but hey, we were there for food. The atmosphere was nice - lots of small families and constant flow of what seemed like Vietnamese families to copycat their dishes from. The Food: We ordered Avocado smoothie, strawberry smoothie, Thai Iced Tea, Pho Chicken, and Salted Squid and some Chicken dish (#27 with rice noodles) that was stir fried The Food was GREAT! The broth was nice and herby with lots of interesting flavors (star anise and other fun PHO regulars) and light enough that the kids still enjoyed it - hard to do when they are used to bland soup. The smoothies were NOT made from powder. it was the real deal avocados and strawberry. It was sweet without being too sweet and was not 90% ice like other places trying to cut corners. The Salted Squid was lightly fried and served with cucumbers, picked veggies and Jalapenos - YUM - this dish was so good we barely got around to the stirfried noodle dish with Chicken. The #27 dish was really good (kind of like Chow Fun) with a nice salty/sweet brown sauce. Definitely a hit with the kids, too. There was lots of variety in this restaurant and we intend to return regularly. This is definitely closer than Seven Corners and definitely worth coming again. read more

Let me start by saying I'm a huge Asian food snob and know this cuisine very well. I've been hoping for a good Vietnamese place near our new home and so far my first order was unexpectedly wonderful. I ordered via Urber Eats. A on the Pho broth (rich, well-developed favor). I could taste the star anise, cinnamon, and all the bone brothy goodness. If you cant do this right, then there is no way I'm eating anything else. You didnt get a + because the bean sprouts and basil weren't fresh. I also ordered the Shredded pork rolls, excellent! authentic Vietnamese favors. Wow, I'm impressed, I really didnt think it would be this good. I usually have to go to Eden or Arlington for something this good. Can't wait to try the Saigon egg noodle soup. That will be test number two. read more

I have always wanted to try this place - it's been such a landmark at the Springfield area. where do I start, the dishes are a bit bland, the pho broth was very wattery. We even ordered the spicy noodle bowl and that wasn't even enticing our taste buds. We did get bubble tea here and it was OK. I have been to a lot of PHO places, and this one definitely didn't make it in my top list. sadly. I also had some challenges while ordering, we ordered quite a bit and when the food was getting brought out, we didn't know what dish was what. I came here a few weeks ago hoping to find a good local pho restaurant. I'm really pleased to say that I would definitely make this a regular place. I ordered pho, summer rolls, and bubble tea. They were all amazing! The best part is that the meat is cooked perfectly! This is my second time coming here and we ordered almost all of the same stuff. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because we found a few pieces of fat from the brisket inside the bowl of pho. We easily just took them out and put them aside. Overall, we've had a pretty good experience with this restaurant. The customer service is okay. Also, they do have free Wi-Fi! I highly recommend trying this place out! This place used to be a family favorite as we would visit at least twice a month. Our future family meals from this establishment will be moved to another pho restaurant. Earlier today, my family and I dined here and while finishing up our meal an unmasked lady decided to walk in with her pitbull (clearly not a service dog) but really just allowed him to wander around sniffing people, the floor and around people's tables. When the Kaine decided to approach my three year old toddler with the sniffing, I decided I'd seen enough. I told the woman to move her dog from my table and my daughter she hesitated then my husband followed, told her to control her dog then she decided to pull the dog away. My husband made eye contact with the owner who was doing nothing to address the health hazard that the animal posed but also saw the owner doing nothing to address the woman who decided to enter a restaurant during the pandemic without wearing a mask. The real issue here is that the owners are too complacent to call out anti-maskers in their restaurant and they were negligent in enforcing VA health code by allowing a non service animal in the restaurant. Every visit to Saigon city, our family spends at least 70 dollars. In the light of this recent situation, We will not be returning to patronize this establishment. The inactions of the owners, spoke loud and clear. They don't care about the COVID, protecting their customers from the COVID and following Fairfax county health code. They much rather have random dogs scouring around looking for food while patrons pay. TO THE OWNERS OF SAIGON CITY: Your customers pay their hard earned money to dine in and enjoy quality soup! Stop treating ur restaurant as a dog park and allowing random dogs in to lick the patrons!!! I'm upset that I spent my money today and will be notifying the Fairfax county health department of this violation! As I look on this, I can't help but wonder if the woman walking her dog in ur restaurant were black would she have gotten away with this?? This is a long overdue review for Saigon City Restaurant. I must confess that the owners are family friends, but I'll try to be as objective as possible. Anyway, Saigon City is probably the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant, with the most varied menu, in the Springfield-Alexandria area. Of course, they serve pho, and their pho is pretty darn good. But I urge you to try other items on the menu, especially their hu tieu (rice noodle soup in pork broth) or hu tieu xao (stir fried rice noodles with your choice of protein or veggie). The caramelized fish a.k.a. clay pot fish is awesome!!!!!! (I would vote theirs and Hai Duong's the best I've had in recent memory.) A safe vegetarian option is the tofu in tomato sauce, though this isn't the best compared to the other items. The family behind Saigon City is very friendly and helpful. I only wish that I could say the same for some of their servers... I won't lie: Certain servers aren't too friendly and work at a snail's pace. The last time I visited, it seemed like some nicer folks had replaced them, though. Hope that wasn't a temporary thing. Saigon City is a godsend to people who live in this area because they don't have to go to Eden Center to get their Vietnamese food fix. If you're in the Springfield Mall area, you should definitely stop by for lunch or dinner. read more

Flying in from the West coast, I had no idea what to expect in this area since it was my first time out here. Google told me there were plenty of places for pho near my hotel and Saigon City was the first one I saw and it looked good enough to try. Surprised this place was not crowded at all on a rainy Friday night. There were about 4 other tables occupied during my time there. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and well kept. They have their own corner lot so plenty of parking. Ordered the Pho which was good. Not bad and not amazing, but good. I visited another Pho place today called,"Pho Vietflare," on South Van Dorn. Very nice and clean atmosphere, people were nice and courteous. I did a carry out but I left a $3.00 tip just because of how they treated me. That Saigon place was low class and S@&tty, I gave them a tip just because they served me but now that I think about it they did not deserve anything and I regret given them my service.
