Never had the chance to support this business when the previous owner did hibachi. I came by this past Sunday with friends for an early lunch and was pleasantly surprised by their menu. Parking was somewhat limited within the lot and on the street, and seating inside had less than ten tables. Doors were wide open allowing the outside air and sounds of traffic to blend into conversation and noise from the kitchen. With this setup, natural sunlight bounced around the white walls and really brightened up the place. Our server was busy but quite efficient as she bounced from kitchen to dining tables speaking English and several Chinese dialects. We ordered a plate of rice noodle rolls to start, and as others have mentioned these are the ridgy ones you'd find from a street vendor back east, so thumbs up to that. For the main meal, we had mapo tofu, braised pork belly, and a veggie soup. The mapo had good flavor, a little on the mild side though great with rice. There was a large glass container of chili pepper soy sauce up front you can ask for to kick things up. The braised pork belly was a bit too salty, but again it paired well with a rice. The soup was a bit simple yet gets the homestyle feel right. In addition, we tried some of their prepared drink in the fridge. Both the herbal tea and hawthorn tea were refreshing though I preferred the herbal tea. A nice local find.

This restaurant's name is misleading - it is NOT a japanese restaurant! It's a Chinese restaurant with the best homemade cheung fun (steamed rice noodle rolls). My favorite is the shrimp one, but they have the beef and fish one too. The rice noodle rolls are so thin and perfectly sauced with the soy sauce, one plate is more than enough for one person's full meal! We also ordered the porridge (it was ok) and a few other appetizers (the fried tofu wrapped in rice noodle, and the fried veggie one not sure what it was called). They're worth trying! They also have homemade herbal teas (idk all the English names for them) but definitely ask about them! We got the sugarcane one and although it was on the sweeter side, it was refreshing to drink with our meal. The restaurant itself is quite tiny, with only a few small tables. The one waitress was very considerate with our party. Since we had a small baby, she offered to give us extra bowls in order to feed her more easily.

Totally awesome in its current incarnation as an Enping style (think Taishan adjacent) restaurant. Local dim sum we've never seen before, like mugwort and glutenous sweet potato filled with savory green peas.

Braised Beef Flank 招牌牛腩 I like the taste！ I could taste Chu Hou Sauce/Paste. It was delicious. The Beef Flank was soft and tender. The size of Beef Flank was good. The portion was good as well. It was value for money. The female staff was friendly and attentive.

This place is pretty small and strangely placed on the corner. It has 3 tables inside for dining in. I ordered the Everything Combo, it comes with chicken, beef, shrimp, and a large side of fried rice plus a soda! For people like myself who have "healthy" appetites, this place is king! The meal was packed with flavor. The meats and veggies were very moist with some kinda sauce, maybe teriyaki. It does have a bit of a wait for the food, around 20 minutes to make it fresh. Overall, it was a really great experience. When I return to this place, I'm gonna try the noodles instead of fried rice.

Ordered the chicken and steak combination. Right now if you order a combo, it comes with free lemonade, additional charge of $2 if you want to try the other flavored lemonades. Tried the watermelon one and it was actually pretty good! The portion size is fairly big, you get a whole box each, but keep in mind the fried rice tastes plain like chinese fast food and that there is quite a load of veggies underneath the chicken and steak. The chicken tasted a bit dry and overcooked despite the sauce over it. I did however enjoy the watermelon lemonade and the salad dressing. I think for the portion size, the price was fair considering the price increase of everything in the economy lately. The service was also quite friendly. Parking can be small and limited, but nearby street parking should be fine.

The food is tasty and made pretty much in front of you; the kitchen is very visible from the cashier. The location of the restaurant isn't the best because it's on the corner of a big street and if you're trying to turn left into the lot, there's a bunch of cars blocking your way. The parking lot only has about 6 spots and its pretty crammed. I think it's a residential home where they converted the front into a restaurant. When we got to the restaurant, there was one other person in front of us but the cash register was not working so it took a while to fix that. When we were able to put in our order, we were told it would take about 20 minutes for our two orders. We headed to the car to wait because it was getting cold and covid restrictions prevented us from staying inside. After 20-25 minutes, we went to pick up our food but, only the person in front was able to pick up so we heading back to the car. It kind of took forever to get our meals. It is a small mom and pop so we decided to give it another shot but this time, it took even longer.

COVID-19 Review Edition Heard about this new place through the SGV eats group and saw that they sell hibachi style food in El Monte for an unbeatable price! Naturally I had to come try this out and wanted to see if I can really feed my family of 4 under $30 and yes it was true! I called in my order ahead of time to skip any wait and ordered 2 of the Combo 3 which is probably their most popular item on the menu. It comes with shrimp, chicken, and beef (you can also choose how you want your beef: medium rare, medium, well done) and a generous amount of fried rice (or chow mein for extra $ I believe), 2 small egg rolls, salad, and milk tea! They normally package the rice under the proteins but now they package it completely separate in another styrofoam box. All of that for $30...the value really can't be beat! As for the food in general, the sauce from my beef leaked out of my bag so it was a pretty saucy dish. The flavor of the protein was pretty good but one thing that I didn't really like was there was way too much chicken over the other proteins. I was hoping for more shrimp or beef but there was chicken overload. Nevertheless, I do like chicken so it was still yummy and flavorful. The egg rolls were meh, they were soggy by the time I got home. As for the milk tea, I've read reviews that it's suppose to be boba milk tea but I didn't receive any boba so mine was just a milk tea. I don't know if it's because there was no boba at the time? Well free is free...so I can't complain! Would I come back again? Yes! I think if you're looking for a cheap meal to feed your family for multiple meals, I would suggest coming here. Great value for good food!

Benihana and Tokyo Wako who? Do not sleep on this place! The portions are huge!The combos cost around $11.99 and you get salad, fried rice, grilled veggies and choice of egg rolls or kani cheese fried wontons. The steak is very flavorful, soft and not chewy. They also ask how you want it cooked. My bf enjoyed the chicken because it wasn't dry. What I also like is they use big shrimps, so no puny shrimps here. There's a special going on for a couple of months (they don't have an exact end date yet) buy a combo get a milk tea for free. Not sure if there is a limit but I ordered two combos and got 2 milk teas for free. Please come and support this local business!

El Monte's newest best-kept secret (for now) is a place called Sakura Grill, a no-frills takeout spot that's seriously going to make me fat. Do you like hibachi-style food? Do you want to feed a family of four for under $25? If you said yes to either of those things, then this is the place for you. The first time I came here, I thought I had picked up the wrong order because the bag felt too heavy for a single meal. Turns out, they're just really generous with the portions. For $14, you can get the #3 combo which is basically a styrofoam box stuffed with chicken, steak (cooked to your preferred temperature), shrimp, veggies, and a mound of fried rice. The fried rice is JUST like the kind you'd find at Benihana or Tokyo Wako: buttery, garlicky, and chock full of flavor. The only thing missing is the teppan chef. Oh, and did I mention the combos also come with your choice of fried egg rolls or cream cheese wontons, salad, a plethora of sauces, and a free boba milk tea? The different combos are just different permutations of chicken, steak, shrimp, veggies, and sides at varying prices. I personally go for the #4 combo which is just steak and shrimp without any chicken for $12. I've also gotten the "Super Chicken Katsu" (which sounds like a dish you'd find at Super Nintendo World), but unfortunately I've had bigger and better chicken katsu elsewhere. Just stick with the hibachi combos! In conclusion, Sakura Grill is a great spot for some quality cheap eats. Call ahead to place your order because they can get backed up during the lunch rush on weekdays.

Went on a Friday at prime lunch time and no one was there so the guy took my order promptly. The restaurant is tiny and looks rundown. Like another reviewer I saw the A rating so I decided to go forward with ordering. I ordered the shrimp and steak combo. I know for certain that the shrimp was cooked to order because I watched him count out the number of shrimp. But the meat was overcooked. The portion is generous but the food is just okay. The gyoza were tasty, if on the small side. Not sure I'd return, but the experience was underwhelming. read more

I really want to support small business restaurants during these times. However, ONE HOUR for 2 orders of food is downright ridiculous!! Edited: I changed this from 1 star to 3. Despite how good the food was I can't give 5 stars due to the long wait time. It actually took 1 hour and 39 minutes. The food was good. It was fresh, flavorful, hot and they are not cheap with the amount of food they serve. I would definitely go back but not without placing a phone order first. read more

I noticed 2 boxes for my order of about $14. Now I thought I lucked out and got somebody else's more expensive meal because each box weighed a substantial amount. I come home to My Order!! Delicious fried noodles on one plate. Delicious tender chicken and vegetables on the other plate! The service is great, the food was made to order, the cashier guy very kind. The dining area is very small and not very clean. There was a kid picking his toes and touching the table where he was made to sit. Since they have an A grade on the door, I figured the kitchen area was clean. We ordered the super combo which was reasonably priced, it came with a drink. The chicken and beef was okay, the sauce was over baring and made all the meat taste the same. You get 5 shrimp, mine didn't taste fresh. The rice needed green onion or soy sauce because it is under seasoned. Well separated though, not bad. The vegetables were very wilted, also drenched in to much sauce. We ordered goyza, they were hard and very dry. Nothing really tasted "habachi grilled". The portions are big, but unfortunately the food was mediocre at best. read more

I was getting new tires down the street, so my bf and I decided to walk around and see what we could eat while we waited. We wondered into Sakura grill and were very intrigued. The menu is simple and straight forward. I'm a vegetarian and my boyfriend isn't, so we asked for the veggie hibachi as a combo and some edamame. Our food was ready within 15 minutes or so and we received quite a bit for $18+ 1 box was full of fried rice and the other with very flavorful sautéed vegetables. It also came with a miso soup, two egg rolls, and a lemonade which was watermelon flavored by request. The lemonade was something special and so were the vegetables. My usual complaint with vegetables bowls is there lack of seasoning or that they simply steam them and call it a day. These plates were in a simple sweet soy kind of sauce and had char marks from the hot wok. Soooo Good! The woman there was very sweet and talkative. After some conversion I learned this was a small family business run by the wife who took our order and the husband who made our food. Also, she gave us a ramekin of creamy pink sauce which she called "everything sauce" ugh amazing. Definitely a place I will be coming back to and recommending to friends and family. I've eaten here a couple times and every single time the food is extremely dry and overcooked. Why ask how you want your steak cooked if you're still going to overcook it. The chicken and steak taste and feel like rubber. Veggies are drenched in all of the water the zucchini releases. Rice has no flavor and prices have gone up. Last order I placed was a chicken hibachi plate and a steak hibachi plate. Ended up paying almost $30. Quality has gone down and prices have gone up. :-( read more

AMAZING! All of the food and service can be summarized in that one word. Carolyn was exceptional with her service and the food was sooooo delicious. My wife and I ordered a Combo 1 - Chicken & Steak and a Combo 3 - Chicken, Steak, and Shrimp. Both my wife and I were very impressed. Technically, we could have shared one plate because the food portions are very generous. I will continue to come by as much as possible. Great hibachi food and super affordable me and my wife went here because of the great yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. We both got combo 3 which had steak chicken and shrimp and it all tasted really good. Our hibachi meals also came with milk teas which was nice. Since eating here the first time we've already been back. Their portions are very generous and food has been well cooked. I've had the chicken and shrimp; also the steak and shrimp. The combo has more veggies which are very good. The rice is a full tray. Easily 2 to 3 portions depending on what you consider a portion. We will be back again! read more

Very impressed!! This is less than half the price of benihana but the same quality. They are so kind too. I took this photo for my husband titles "be jealous" lol. I couldn't believe how good. It also comes with a canned drink and a salad that aren't pictured but delicious. I'm going once a week. Great hidden spot too. read more

I think I've found a new place to go to for fresh, fast food! After scrolling through their Yelp page, I finally decided to go try Sakura Grill. I ordered the Hibachi Combo with chicken, steak, and shrimp and was impressed by the quantity and quality of food. The combo I ordered costed a total of $13.99 before tax and included an entire box of fried rice and a separate box with the teriyaki grilled chicken, steak, and shrimp. The combo also included a side salad and the option of spring rolls or cheese rangoons (I believe they have another name for it). They currently have a promotion that includes a free milk tea with every hibachi combo ordered. This single order could be split into 2-3 meals for me. The fried rice tasted similar to Panda's so it wasn't special, however, the proteins and vegetables were really good for a fast food restaurant! It wasn't under or over seasoned and they had a nice char flavor from the grill, which I personally like. I would definitely come back again! read more

Little family owned spot and it didn't disappoint. The food is made to order so don't expect to come in and get out in 5 minutes. I got the chicken hibachi with an order of spring rolls and it came out to $18. My girlfriend and I shared the huge portion of fried rice and the huge portion of chicken and vegetables and had a whole box of rice, veggies and some chicken left for the next day. The owners are very friendly. Overall, Sakura Grill gives more food and it is just as good as any other hibachi spot, for half the price. I'll be coming back 100%. read more

Benihana who?! This place is soooooo much better and affordable. Ordered through DoorDash today. Everything came packaged nicely they were also very generous with their extra sauces. The salad that came with my combo was fresh and the dressing was delicious. The chicken, shrimp, veggies, and fried rice were amazing. Flavor 10/10. Also portions are HUGE. Location: it was easier and more convenient to park on the street. Use GPS to find the place. Don't look for "Sakura Grill". Price: huge portions for a decent price? Does not hurt to try. Wait time: this is a mom-&-pop restaurant where the husband is the cook and the wife at the register. Plus everything is cooked to order so there will be a bit of wait. We waited 20 mins total on a Saturday afternoon 12pm. Food: I ordered the steak and chicken combo with fried rice while my wife ordered the steak and shrimp combo with chow mein (75 cents extra). EVERYTHING is cooked to order (fresh and not pre-cooked sitting around). They even asked how we wanted our diced steak. Even our fried rice and chow mein was cooked to order. We enjoyed everything and saved half for dinner due to the large portion size. They have a promo on certain menu item that comes with free milk tea, which is not loaded with sugar or artificial sugar. You can taste the black tea they used to make their own milk tea. ---------------------------------- Ambiance, lighting, and decor: if you came here for that instead of the good food then you need to stay home and curl up into a fetal position at the corner of your room while humming yourself to sleep. read more

This place was amazing . The amount of food you get for what you pay is crazy ! And it's soooooo good ! They legit give you your hibachi stuff in one container and either your rice or chowmein in another full size container ! I bought 2 combos and got some rice from my moms combo to try it but substituted my own combo for chowmein so that's why my picture has both in it . But seriously this is my new favorite spot and the lady who attended us was the absolute sweetest ! She even gifted my sister and I some lemonade . 10/10 !! read more

We have tried almost every item on the menu- the Putu coffee and the Kopichino are classically good. The Melati Over Crema and the Ju Hua Matcha this past spring have also been very yummy! However, this review is actually about my few most recent visits. I went with a friend a couple weeks ago and her order took a very long time to make (Melati Over Crema). Keep in mind, there was no line and there were only 3 parties in the store, all of whom already had drinks besides my friend. This was a bit odd. Please note this isn't a complaint about how we expected the drink to be finished in an inhumane amount of time- it took a considerable amount of time (about 15 minutes) for the drink to be made when no one else was ordering or expecting a drink besides my friend. This was her first time having Uncle Fung's too, so it made for a bad impression, even though the drink tasted good. For another recent visit I had made, I felt like the drinks just did not taste as good as they used to. The cream in the Coco Cloud is way too milky now and a lot lighter in color compared to when we would get it in the past. There was barely any coffee flavor, just heavy cream and coconut water, which was not pleasant. Their Hoijicha latte also has been tasting super lackluster. When the hojicha or matcha is still very warm from being whisked and it gets poured into the cup of ice and milk, the ice just melts and the drink becomes watery, lukewarm, and just not good. I also noticed only one barista was making drinks while the rest socialize or are on their phones. This makes sense to me when the work environment is slow and not so busy, but when there is an actual line of people forming, I feel bad for the one barista putting in work. I don't know what's going on or what has made the quality dip, but it's making me not want to recommend Uncle Fung's or take my friends anymore. I still think this place is great- the drinks are yummy and unique, the interior is a great place to hang out or do work, and the employees are pretty nice. This really is the cafe I hype up the most in the 626 area. But if things keep going as they are, I will not return and can't continue to recommend.

Went back again and noted my first review of this new business was merged (by Yelp admin) with the prior ownership when they claimed "japanese" cuisine "habichi" style and that was not a bit correct. My 2nd visit to the current CHINESE cuisine was as tasty as the first time. This time met the new business owner who showed me the teas made from scratch daily and I ordered the Hawthorn berry (top level on their fridge labeled as "Fructus Crataes"). Love the hand-crafted tea (these hand-made teas are not obvious on their printed menu). Asked new owner about street signage and was told have been waiting for new signage delivery for several months already! Next item is the dish that will drive me back to this joint repeatedly--their Vermicelli [sheet] rice rolls! their menu highlights the Vermicelli [sheet] rice rolls being their Signature dish! fyi, whenever I visit any chinese restaurants, if available, I always taste their Vermicelli [sheet] rice rolls and can claim to be connoisseur of this dish--I've tried Lunasia, Sea Harbor, Koi palace (san francisco), a restaurant in chinatown Philadephia (forgot its name), and all chinese restaurants that sell such dish in SoCal. This joint's vermicelli [sheet] rice rolls are truly top-notch while priced so modestly! Ordered with beef flank and like the first visit, this signature dish is top-notch, freshly cooked in the kitchen (the chef made ingredients fresh daily), so the texture is perfect--slightly chewy and doesn't break as easily, yet it is so thin and delicate. the beef flank was added on top of the dish instead of being wrapped by the rice rolls as many other served--due to the delicate texture of their rice rolls, it is too thin to wrap anything. Beef flank did not look freshest but I ate all, thanks to their rice rolls made me so hungry. At $8.50, the portion is generous, almost double, compare to all others. This time instead of double up the rice rolls like the first visit, I ordered my second dish to be a vegetable dish. Am very particular about how my vegetables cooked and like to custom order at the chinese restaurants--Ho Kee did it well. I asked to put No oil and No salt into the dish and it was so fresh to the eyes and to the stomach--the chef could custom cook my vegetables deliciously! this is good news especially for anyone with dietary restrictions. Sakura Grill is a fantastic spot that deserves a solid 4 stars! What really stood out to me was the generous portions they offer. I mean, we're talking large portions here - especially their mouthwatering fried rice and perfectly grilled proteins paired with a variety of veggies. The unassuming location with street parking might throw you off, but don't let that deter you. This place is a hidden gem in El Monte. Plus, they're in the process of revamping their menu, so there are even more exciting things to look forward to.
