My grandparents have always hyped this place up, so I had high expectations on my first visit. I went during the week at 11:30 when they first opened and the customers just kept flowing in. The crowd was definitely on the older side and there were even a lot of people eating alone. The waitress was the only one working, but handled the crowd very well! I ordered bow tie pasta with chunky tomato sauce and prosciutto. It was super fresh and just the right amount of flavor. My only complaint is not enough prosciutto because I love it. The five stars is based heavily on the portion sizes and amazing lunch prices. My grandparents ordered the chicken special (stuffed with sausage) and linguine with clam sauce and the bill was just over $30 for the three of us! Each entree came with an appetizer salad as well. Perfect portion sizes if you're hungry or looking for leftovers and great quality of the food. I will be coming back for more lunches! read more

We came here as a back up plan when we discovered Cattani Kitchen was unexpectedly closed. I'm glad we did. The atmosphere is very welcoming, as are the staff. We were served complimentary toasted bread with sun dried tomatoes to start. I had the summer Parmesan chicken witch zucchini and arugula- it was AMAZING. The outside was flavorful and crispy, balanced nicely by the veggies. Others in my party had the chicken parm- also very well cooked, and the tortellini carbonara- huge portion (probably 5 cups of pasta) again very delicious. Finally made the stop here after years of saying we would. Clearly our loss. I almost don't want to post this review as it may encourage others to come try it. Clearly many of the diners are regulars and were warmly welcomed back. This byob hidden in the strip mall by Marranos Foodmarket was superb. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. Yvonne our server was excellent and has an attentive support team. We split a delicious stuffed mushroom app. We both had the house salad which was the perfect small size and dressed with a light vinagerette Yvonne recommended the seafood capellini entree which was to die for spouse thoroughly enjoyed her rigatoni con salsiccia. In short this place will be on our regular circuit going forward. Being a byob makes it an even better bargain. read more

We went for dinner here the other night and will never support this business again. The owner is not kid-friendly. Keep in mind, we only had one child with us. There's no kid menu so I ordered a $16 adult plate for my 4 year old knowing she wouldn't eat nearly all of it, but whatever, I wasn't going to argue about it. Then at one point I took her to the restroom, came back, my (masked) 4 year old daughter was standing directly to the side of our table (nobody anywhere immediately sitting around us) for no more than 30 seconds and the owner came up and told us she had to sit down because he had other patrons here. The closest table to us was a table of 8, sitting 2 tables away and not paying any attention to her. In the situation the world is in now, I would normally never think about writing a negative review about an establishment that may be struggling however you'd also think because of the situation establishments wouldn't want to alienate patrons. Thanks to Yelp, I recently became aware that Sal DeForte's was still operating in Ewing and quickly ordered take out! I remember this ristorante fondly from the Chambersburg days and was not aware that they were still in business. I had the penne with vodka sauce and it may be the best I have ever had! I am instantly hooked and cannot wait to order again! My wife had the eggplant parm which is stuffed with broccoli and it was sensational! The dinners also came with bread and salad which were fantastic. I would almost guarantee that the other items on the menu are absolutely delicious, but I think we may have found our favorites on our first go round. I come from a big, Jersey-based, Italian fam, who are very picky about things like a.) food and b.) Italian food in particular. This year, someone (Mom?) chose Sal's for our Easter dinner, and everyone seemed pretty much pleased. Sal's isn't anything super fancy -- it's an Italian restaurant in a strip mall, with laminated diner-like menus that also contain staples like "bacon cheeseburger" and "onion rings." There's nothing really creative, or extraordinary about the offerings --basic Italian faves like chicken and veal parm, pasta with vegetables, zuppa de pesta, etc. -- yet for the most part, what Sal's does, they do well. I ordered clams on the half shell (family dinner = eating lavishly) and they were nice and fresh, and the cocktail sauce was amazing. For my entree, I went with a spinach, mushroom, white bean and olive oil pasta, and it was delicious -- I am definitely going to try to make this at home! My dad, in true Italian fashion, went with the Sunday gravy (pasta with homemade sauce, filled with meatballs, sausage, pork chops etc. -- a vegetarian's nightmare) and totally dug it. But my mom and bros all got meat dishes and they came naked on a giant plate, with a small side of plain pasta in a separate dish, which seemed unnecessary, especially in a cramped 8-person table. And would it really have killed them to bring around one of those giant pepper shakers? Anyway, for the most part, we all enjoyed our meal -- except for Mom, who thought the veal Milanese was bland, and the salad had too much dressing. But 7 out of 8 ain't bad -- so yay Sal's! read more

The food is consistently good and not very expensive at this BYO that attracts a lot of local regulars. We're not regulars but we've come here maybe 15 times over the last couple of years and have always been pleased. Good seasoned chicken on the bone, very good manicotti and pastas that are always properly cooked. Lots of entrees under $20, with some pastas under $15. It's consistently good and priced reasonably. I prefer to go here for lunch. You really can't beat a salad, main dish, and a side of pasta for $8.95. The portions are reasonable, I'm always able to finish what I ordered and I leave feeling full. Proper portioning gets an A+ from me and Gordon Ramsey. On my most recent visit, which was at lunch, I had veal and peppers. It's a dish I typically lean towards because it's a classic that I can't make at home. I was a bit disappointed that there was only a few chunks of veal on the plate and the rest was shredded into the sauce. I didn't order a veal meat sauce, so I really did expect veal pieces. That being said, I've had it where it's been all chunks of veal. The red sauce, or gravy, or tomato sauce, or whatever they call it- I'm too Polish to understand the Italian naming of a simple tomato based sauce- is spectacular. I really do think they have one of the best sauces around. It's the reason I order the veal and peppers. No way would I be able to make a sauce so flavorful. I've also had some bad experiences with the wait staff. Sometimes they don't ask if you want pasta or vegetables as your side- during my most recent visit I was assigned pasta while the rest of my table was asked which they would prefer. Sometimes, like today, they forget to refill beverages. One time, the waitress actually told my boyfriend that he shouldn't order a sandwich and directed him to something she believed would be better. Granted, she told us she never actually tried one of the sandwiches, but loved the chicken entrees. In my mind that's completely unprofessional. This place isn't the best in terms of decor or wait staff, but for the price and the quality of the food it is worth every experience. I really believe it's run to cater to corporate workers going out to lunch. I've found that lunch is what they're good at and there's always a lot of people obviously who came from the office. read more

I organized a farewell lunch party here for my office and it was just great! I had never been there but wow great value and service! they easily accomodated my reservation for 19 ppl, and had the table set up nicely. the server was friendly and informative. the pricing was out of this world too - i mean talk about bargain at lunch or dinner! for lunch you get a salad w/your meal, even if you dont get an entree! I had the eggplant parm stuffed w/broccoli and vegggies - eparm was GREAT but the veggies were quite crunchy and eveno thought i asked for no potatoes, they gave them to me anyway. all my co-workers raved about their meal too - esp the pork special many of them got. I would go back again - and we did! For another co worker party for lunch - the best thign was that we had a paty of 9, called 15 minutes before we got there and they had no problem getting us a table! The waitress though had very short paitence. My meal was awesome - a special of the day - crab, mushroom and asparagus quiche with a wonderful small light salad of spinach, cantaloupe, and strawberries with a raspberry vinagrette. I used to come here all the time about 6 or 7 years ago my favorite was their vodka rigatoni with prosciutto. We stopped in today rainy day wanted something warm grabbed my vodka rigatoni and a butternut squash ravioli and it was so good just as good as I remember it. And the Butternut Squash Ravioli was something so different then I ever tasted such a great fall dish. We'll be back sooner next time!!! read more

A year since first review and this place keeps drawing us back We bring all our friends and they come on their own too. Considering that we all live in Pennsylvania, it says something about quality, atmosphere and pricing. Yes it's noisy on Friday and Saturday, but not painfully so. Service is pleasant, efficient and accommodating. Food remains great. Chicken cacciatore, a dish I normally would not order, is fabulous here. Portions are large. Growing up in Trenton, I know great food! So whenever I come back to visit my family, I try to visit all the places that I miss. So for Mother's day, I decided to take my parents out to dinner the night before. We had reservations and the place was packed. They were even turning away people, but we were seated fairly quickly. We started with salads and my husband tried the special salad and said it was the best salad ever! I had the Insalata Barbabietola - it was delicious too. Pros: --The food is good. We usually go in a group and share apps and then order entrees and the prices for these items are actually quite good. I love the chicken dishes and the specials are interesting. You must try the various breads on the app menu; they are all great. --BYOB helps keep the price down. Cons: --Service could be more attentive; the experience isn't particularly comfortable because of that. They are either understaffed or just need a bit of practice working with multiple tables. --Noisy and it feels like you are sitting on top of your neighbors. --Side salads are anemic. We will continue to go here for large family dinners (i.e. birthdays) because the food is consistent and it is an affordable place to go out for a nice meal that has something for everyone. read more

You walk into this place and you think it's a pretty fancy place until you look at the menu. It's basically the exact same meals with different pastas. The server couldn't even pronounce bruchetta correctly. Flavor can best be described as bland. My lasagna had no depth. It was very un-memorable. Our lunch was OK. Waitress should have explained what entre came with and thought it would be a pasta, which I LOVE here. Instead the fish came with roasted potatoes and sad looking vegies. The salad was good, but small and came with non descript bread. Wanted the filet of sole and was told it was no longer on the menu and tilapia was it with crab or plain. Been to Sal DeForte's a handful of times since they moved to Ewing, I never dined at the original location so I can't compare. I've come for dinner with friends, family, co workers...I'd dine with strangers. Get my point?? BYOB - A great bonus to the experience. Food- Very dependable, I know I'm going to have a delicious italian meal every time. I didn't give 5 stars as sometimes I feel the food doesn't consistently give the 'grandma's homemade' feel. Atmosphere- Since this location is only a few years young it is decorated very modern and up to date. Staff- The wait staff never changes which is nice, it makes for an inviting experience. Bathrooms - (I always rate as they are a direct link to the cleanliness of the overall location.) Very clean and nicely decorated. read more

My wife and I were so excited to visit Sal DeForte's. We arrived there this evening and were seated at a table for two that was nearly on top of another table. We sat down and after ordering, asked if we could sit at the table to our right (which was a larger table). We were told that they "needed every table they could get because of a rehearsal dinner." Begrudgingly, we waited for our appetizer. As we ate our meal, which was OK, two couples were seated at three larger tables. I felt like it was a smack in the face. The way I see it is that you take care of your present customers, not ones that could potentially come in. I will never visit Sal DeForte's again. read more

Great food at reasonable prices. I went with a friend for lunch there yesterday, it was packed. It took a few minutes to get a table but the lady at the front was really polite and understanding. We split the garlic bread with blue cheese on it (forget the diet) it was great.. my mouth is watering thinking about it. Service was decent, but the place was really noisy so it was hard to carry on a conversation. I had butterfly pasta with tomato & prosciutto, my friend had pollo de angelica (?), we were both well satisfied with them. It would have been nice to have a glass of wine but didnt realize til we got there that it was BYOB. After a sad day for my family, we were looking forward to our reservations at a local restaurant to celebrate my grandfather's life. My uncle made reservations at another restaurant; however, the blizzard that arrived and dumped snow in the area quickly changed our plans. My uncle was told by the other restaurant that if this restaurant decided to close on Thursday due to the weather, my uncle would have been notified immediately by a phone call. Well after my grandfather's funeral on Thursday, we decided to call the restaurant to double check our reservation for 15 people. Guess what...The restaurant is closed. We find this out by calling ourselves about 30- minutes before our reservation. Thankfully I called Sal deForte & they were open. They accommodated all 15 people in about an hour from the time I called to see if they were opened. We had exceptional service! The food was delicious! We have visited several times and have enjoyed it every time. My sister & niece gave me a surprise birthday party at Sal's. All was great - the food, service and the price. My friends can't wait to go back and some of which are pretty picky when it comes to food. It is definately is one of our favorites!!
