Great place to eat in City Centre. Came for an after trip celebration after Argentina won there game at World Cup and wanted some Argentinian/ Uruguay food. Know for great service and authentic comer we had to return. Service was phenomenal and glad we came early because even on a Tuesday night this place was packed. Several private wine rooms are available and can eat at their limited seating bar or outside if not too caliente Looking forward to a return visit..
I have passed by Sal y Pimienta my whole life since I grew up in this area and this place has been here for as long as I can remember. One day my family and I finally decided to try it. We started with the Caesar salad, empanadas, the mango salad, and ceviche. The Caesar salad was honestly amazing and ended up being the highlight of the night. The ceviche was okay. The mango salad was literally just shaved mango stacked into a tower with sauce on top, which was a little disappointing and kind of felt like the start of things going downhill, but I brushed it off. We like ordering a lot of appetizers and then sharing a main at the end, so for the main we ordered picanha and another steak with a side of potatoes to share. When the steaks came out and we cut into them, they were both basically raw. We asked for medium and one of them was definitely on the rare side, so rare that we had to send it back. They recooked it, but even then it was still chewy and not enjoyable. We really tried to give it a fair shot and ordered a good variety of plates to understand the restaurant better, but even with that it just did not work out for us flavor-wise. Because I have seen this restaurant for so many years and it is still open in a big area like CityCentre, I had high hopes and really wanted to like it. That is why I left feeling disappointed. The surprising part is that my favorite dish ended up being the Caesar salad, even though it is not what the restaurant is known for. I never like speaking down on places and this is just my opinion, but the food did not live up to the expectations I had. The one thing I will give credit for is the staff. They were very kind and helpful. One of the hosts even brought out an iPad, showed us pictures, and went through the menu with us. I wish I got his name because he was great. I am not sure if I would return. The service was good and the ambiance is nice, but the food just fell short for me. If someone is curious, I would still say try it for yourself because everyone has different taste, but for me it just did not hit the mark.
This is a restaurant with great potential... if you get the correct server. The food is tasty, steaks are juicy, great variety of meta cuts. Very roomy, they have a room for special events. Big selections of wines and good cocktails Our steak was delicious as well as the Lamb Lollichops (as appetizer). My only "complaint " will be that our server looked unhappy helping us, rushed us through the menu. Other servers were nicer and gave us better service, so not all of them are bad. I may give it another try
HRW review: This place was a surprise pick by my friend. The chimichurri and snacks you begin with was so good! i had a shrimp and wagyu ground beef empanada. I preferred the shrimp over the other but the creamy avocado salsa was a great pairing with both as well. i later had a NY strip with potatoes and vegetables. You know the potatoes were fresh because there were a few chopped potatoes in it. my steak was under and then reheated and it was over but the seasoning and char initially were really good. For dessert had a chaja- okay i've never had this before but out of all of the desserts i had this month this was one of my favorites. peaches. meringue. it was so good. This place is worth a try. Service was great. And it's definitely a date night or business meeting kind of place!
First time visiting (during Houston Restaurant Week), I ordered the empanadas, tenderloin, and cuatro leches. This restaurant is located in city centre so parking is available in the garage. Service was good. The empanadas were also good I had the chicken and the waygu. The chicken was actually more flavorful than the chicken. The tenderloin was amazing. The issue was the mashed potatoes. While these were fresh made, they were served cold. The plate gave the tenderloin was made on site but the potatoes had been waiting on the plate for 45 mins before it was served to me. The cuatro leches was not my speed. Someone else who likes caramels infused in their cake might like it. The whipped topping was also Super THICK. Ambiance was nice and for me to visit during the week, it was quite packed. They also have multiple party rooms.
Salt and Pepper translated. I have not been to this restaurant in ages but it was everything I remembered and more! The staff were historians, funny, and welcoming. That said....do not try to sculpt your own dish here because the answer will he no! I didn't mind...you can't come in and disturb someone else's masterpiece. The restaurant is small but quaint. It takes you back to a spot that you would see in Brazil or Argentina. The food was amazing! From the empanadas, to the homemade chips and the chinichurri sauce. I highly recommend!

Uruguayan steak house in City Center. They have a few private rooms and then the basic open floor plan (a little loud in there) with tables and a bar. Staff are all friendly and seem to know their stuff. I was there for a work dinner and we shared the: Empanadas (beef and chicken) which was delicious and cut in half for easier sharing, pork lollipops (yum), and the calimari which was just okay to me. They also give a chip/bread basket out. For my main I had the asada which came with potato mix. The steak was 10 oz, cooked perfectly medium rare and the sweet potatoes in the mix were fire! The filets looked good too. Shared the 4 Leches cake at the end to top of a solid meal with good cadence of food coming out. The wine selection was great.
Good starters but entrees were just ok. Service was great but we had long wait despite reservations and that added to our parking issues. Empanadas were good, ceviche was just a mistake and nothing like other Latin places, calamari was good, steaks and fish were ok. Not many options for non beef eaters. But crab claws seemed a good option. Due to delay had to rush them for to go, But that was an utter mistake as they smelled like fish, while they should not smell bad if fresh. Yes stake claws smell bad. Not sure why they were so bad, despite high price and had to throw just as I reached home. We paid over $325 for lunch, no drinks, that is a whopping amount and would any-day need credit for it.
Had a wonderful time at our feast. Good quality meats cooked to perfection and served on the tableside asador. It was all about the meats - sides were good but nothing to write home about, but the meats were absolute perfection! Excellent empanadas and desserts, too. They have a nice private room for small group reservations at no cost - perfect for our group of 10. The staff were all incredibly knowledgeable and provided excellent service with a very friendly demeanor. Dinner was never rushed. Santo truly loves his job and has such a great outlook on life, and he was incredible. I loved this opportunity to try traditional flavors of Uruguay and Argentina, and I highly recommend them!
Have wanted to do HRW Houston restaurant week for years in Houston. After seeing this restaurant participating to give a portion back of proceeds to feed the homeless , had to make a reservation. A friend asked to do brunch today and could not have had a better meal. Jose , our server , took excellent care introducing the menu for HRW and it did not disappoint. We both ordered the zucchini crusted pizza that was reconstructed into pure deliciousness. Made with zucchini, EVOO,basil, thyme , egg , mozzarella, and parmesan cheese set on top of greens and decorated with sliced thin radishes looked more like art than a meal. It was so delicious. I would certainly return for that 1st course. Our 2nd course was the Pollo a la Parilla.All natural chicken breat served with a light delicately spiced quinoa salad. The chicken came out perfectly tender from the wood burning stove and was a large 2 piece meal that will be calling us back to dine again.Sooo good!!! The ambiance inside was warm and inviting. It is set close to other big chain restaurants that are not very intimate and often too noisy to talk. I felt very welcome and taken care of in this family owned establishment. We even met Saldo from Honduras as we were leaving who gave us a great explanation of the history of Sal y Pimienta and welcomed us to come again. The restaurant itself was easy to find in City Centre off I 10 .Highly recommend a return for brunch and worth a return during HRW!!!
The service from the waited was great and food also but management is horrible. To be specific the manager Jose has an attitude and he does not communicate well and almost did not seat us when we first arrived. We had a cupón and by accident we purchased the 4 people not 2 , he came aggressively and demanded we payed the bill without an explanation clearly looking for a public embarrassment . If you come here just stay away from having such encounters

App: The beef, chicken, and spinach empanadas were good. I would skip the ceviche. Main: 100% recommend the Picanha. (Med rare) It was very tender. Dessert: First time having frozen chaja. It was fun with the textures of crushed meringue and frozen cake. Definitely more of a unique dessert option. I liked it better than my friends order of cremebrulee which was too sweet. Ambiance: Sit outside if you can. We went for dinner on a weeknight and it was so loud it was hard to hear. Service: Friendly servers, very good at refilling water. Con: had to ask 4 times before getting a refill on chips. A bit disappointed as each time they said they would bring it but had to wait over 20+ mins. That being said the homemade potato chips were so delicious. *ambiance and service took away a star. Especially for the prices and location, I expected a bit more. read more

Small family owned restaurant with good food. Servers are very attentive and provide great recommendations. Definitely recommend for all my meat lovers. I wish the whole Branzino fish was given instead of being fillet table side, but that is just my personal preference. read more
Small restaurant in City Center. You can park in garage for free or valet. Nice restaurant for couples or groups, not kid friendly. It's a nice intimate setting for drinks with friends. If you're going during peak eating hours it's safer to make reservations. They have 2 private rooms for large parties or events. Staff and owners are friendly, helpful and polite. Good size menu with variety of options, pricing is on higher end, especially the appetizers, but it's not outrageous. We only had 3 items. Both our entrees were good but I'm a steak snob and although I liked my food, it didn't rock my world. The dessert was my favorite part, large selection of choices which all sounded yummy, we chose the flan and were not disappointed. Great texture and taste. How fun! This place is fantastic! It's located in the heart of City Centre--perfect for our date night. It was bustling when we arrived, but were promptly seated. Our servers were sweet and attentive. We told them it was our 1st time there so they gladly recommended dishes. Wow! We loved every single one! Unfortunately, I kept forgetting to take pics because I dug in so quickly! Lol! I was able to snap a couple, though. We sampled several appetizer dishes and thoroughly enjoyed our cocktails. Houston Restaurant Weeks brought me to dinner here recently for the first time. My group of four had reservations and parked in the free garage across the street and were promptly seated upon arrival. This was a four course meal using the HRW menu and I chose to start with the Caprese salad and then a regular house salad for the second. The main dish was going with the wagyu ossobucho and then the waiter recommended the chaja to finish. First to arrive was the complimentary chips and olive oil for the table. Very soon after, my Caprese salad arrived with one steak tomato slice and fresh mozzarella on top with garnishments of olives, lemon juice and olive oil. It was cool and tasty even though it was a small serving (3.5). The house salad followed soon after and was a mix of greens with cilantro dressing and some tomato slices added. I thought this salad was plain tasting and wished I had ordered the soup (3). It was at least 20 more minutes before the third course arrived. The ossobucho is advertised as being cooked for three hours in a Malbec and tomato reduction sauce and served on a bed of polenta. After having been a little underwhelmed with the first two courses this course was delicious. At my first bite, I thought "how favorful" this meat is! With the polenta this dish hit the mark (4). Finally the chaja appeared to end the meal. This frozen dessert had peaches in it and was very good tasting (4). Kind of like eating a version of peach ice cream. It had pieces of hard sugar crumbled on top that added to its sweetness and I'm glad I ordered it. Our table service during the meal was prompt and professional. Overall I enjoyed my meal and our group contributed funds to the Houston Food Bank to purchase 72 meals with so the evening was a success. read more

Came here to try their HRW menu and I was very impressed! First of all the service was top notched and the ambiance was very romantic. The ceviche was so fresh and delicious! Then i had lobster bisque for second course and lobster ravioli for the entree (what can I say? I love lobster). Both were perfectly seasoned and the portions were just right. The highlight of my meal was the flan for dessert! Never tasted a flan like this, so creamy and you can taste the caramel drizzle they beautifully put on top. read more

Did the Houston restaurant week menu for their 4 course meal and it was a hitter!! To start off: Their service was superb. The waiter was attentive and came by frequently to check up. First course: the ceviche was fresh, meaty, acidic, and flavorful. Everything went well together and pairing the chips that come with the table with the fish was so good. Must try. House salad: the dressing was great with cilantro flavors but nothing else was really special about the salad. Would recommend getting the soup which was a corn soup this day. Picanha: the steak was so tender and cooked perfectly. The chimichurri sauce on top pair so nicely and cut through the meatiness. The potatoes were also cooked so nicely and seasoned not too salty. Overall, super good! Dessert: Quarto leche. Solid dessert. I tried the chocolate ganache cake and the flan. I think I liked the leche cake the best. read more
I'm in love! The service was phenomenal. They give you the feel of a family owned restaurant, not sure if it is or not. I went for the hh and the bartender poured me a wine based on my persona taste profile. I'm not sure if it was the hh wine and I didn't ask because it was the hh price. My guy had the caprinia and the only other time I tasted that type of drink was at Fogo de chao, but this one was way better! No premade mix. I almost traded my wine, but it was equally as good. We only had a couple of appetizers, but they both hit the spot. The crab claw's actually had a decent amount of meat on them and the ceviche had the perfect amount of lime flavor. Came here on a Friday night for an early Father's Day dinner and my family had a good time. The plantain chips they served at the start were crispy, well salted, and warm. I got the Pappardelle del Tano which was okay. I'd say it was a little too salty and a bit small on the portion size but by the time I got to my entree I wasn't too hungry anyway. Got to try the flan and the cuatro leches and normally I'd go with the leches the whole way but the flan was actually really good and may have stolen my normal vote for the cake. Cute/semi-small Latin American spot in city center. I was coming for a buffet style brunch I was told they offered but was advised upon arrival that it had been suspended due to Covid. They advised it will return soon. We ended up doing a 3 course brunch instead in which I ordered: beef/chicken empanadas for my appetizer, grilled pork chops and eggs for my main course and creme brûlée for my dessert. I loved the empanadas and my pork chops! Very well cooked and the perfect temperature. The creme brûlée was more caramel flavored so it wasn't my favorite but it wasn't bad. They brought us these fresh made plantain style chips that were soooo addictive (should've asked for some to go lol) and I ordered a caipirinha for my drink which tasted like a really sweet house margarita. The establishment is very nice and clean and I would highly suggest for a more high-end brunch location. read more

HRW Dinner Menu: First course - 5/5. Tried the chicken, beef, and ham and cheese empanadas. My boyfriend and I agree that the chicken one was the best. The creamy cilantro sauce it came with was to die for Second course - 3/5. We both had salads, but another option was lobster bisque. Unfortunately could not try that due to a shellfish allergy. Salads were fine, but I wish it had more to it. It was just salad mix, tomato, and red onion. Third course - 4/5. I had the wagyu osso bucco which was served with the most delicious polenta. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. My boyfriend had the picahna which he said was a bit underseasoned and underwhelming. He enjoyed the rice and beans on his plate, and the meat was cooked well. Fourth course - 4/5. Tried the 4 leches and the chocolate ganache cake. Both were very good, but nothing to write home about. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience. They are supremely efficient as we were in and out in about an hour and 15 minutes. We never felt rushed despite the quick meal. The restaurant is beautiful and everyone was friendly. I have always enjoyed dining at Sal y Pimienta! Most recently I had a family dinner here for my birthday, and my family was very happy with the meal. I highly recommend the ceviche and empanada (beef was better in my opinion) for appetizers. The cow toungue that Inhad tried before was very good as well. For main courses, I always order the Parilla just because of the different cuts of meat you get with the humongous plate! The temperature can be a hit or miss at times, but we had them mostly at Medium Rare as we had ordered at the most recent visit! My mom sang praises for the Salt-baked fish - she absolutely loved how tender the fish was! We also had the pappardelle, which was too salty for our taste and not too much to write home about. Tl;dr: highly recommend Parilla, salt-baked fish, ceviche and empanada. Their Sunday brunch is a feast of itself as well! read more

I love sal y pimienta when I'm craving meat and a different flavor, my favorite thing is their green sauce! This place is great for big or small groups, couldn't take a picture of my milanesa since I devoured it as soon as it got to the table. Service is friendly and they're usually easy to accommodate you without a reservation. read more
Uruguay cuisine. 6:00 pm Friday Food was fine but it wasn't great. The service was good, not great. Our filet cooked medium rare was chewy. I even had a hard time cutting it with the steak knife. The stuffed chicken, on the other hand, was delicious. We ordered a side of the sautéed onions and peppers. Major disappointment, it was quite bitter. French fries were amazing if it had first came out temperature hot and crispy. We had to wait for fresh ones, which ended up coming after we finished dinner. Maybe kitchen was short staffed, but I found it surprising how long it took for our food to come out when the restaurant was half filled with patrons. To end, I'm not saying that the food was bad nor service was bad, I'm just saying that we weren't impressed to the point where we're like, "I can't wait to go back." You should at least try it once and I say that you have had Uruguayan food. read more

We went for a Sunday brunch. They have a groupon so it saved us a bit. Service 5/5 Pretty spot on. Our drinks were always filled. Food 5/5 So good. I felt like the quality of their food was so worth it. Usually at a lot of brunch spots they tend to throw whatever and it's like only so many items you would actually enjoy. 5 stars all around for the amazing food, rich history, and excellent wait staff at Sal Y Pimienta Ktchen. Shout out to Santos who was extra courteous, knowledgeable on all the food items, and very attentive. It was very refreshing to know the origins of the food. I had purchased a four course prie fixed dinner for two on Groupon and I'm usually a little skeptical about fine dining with Groupons but this place has made me a believer in repeat customers. I will be back! Where do I begin. As soon as you walk in, you have the attention of the manager and all the wait staff eagerly awaiting your arrival. The kitchen is an open concept so you're able to see everything being freshly prepared right in front of your eyes. They have a sizeable wine room and their cocktail menu is one of the best! As for the good, we were able to select an appetizer, soup/salad, entree, and dessert. Between mine and my guests plates, we were able to sample each others food and satisfy our gustatory senses. Let me cut to the chase! The tuna tartare was amazing- chunks of fresh tuna. Caprese salad- thick cut slices of fresh tomato and mozzarella Potato and leek soup- delicious! Filet mignon cooked medium- super tender and seasoned to perfection with just salt and pepper Flan- the best!!! Crème brûlée- super rich and tasty! Parking for free in the garage to the back of the restaurant. Will definitely come back again! read more

Went here for an early birthday dinner. I went with the 4 course meal: Ceviche, Salad, Veal Osso Buco, and 4 Leches. Ceviche was fresh with plenty of fish, great acidity! Osso Buco was perfectly cooked with a rich sauce with a great pairing of the polenta, Tres Leches was also fantastic. All of my friends also enjoyed their respective dishes. Service is great, even when it started to get busy, they were still very attentive. Will most likely return for their Sunday Brunch. read more
I've been to this place twice with my friends but I couldn't remember what the food tasted like the first time. Now I remember it's because it was not that great. The best thing this night was the free basket of plátanos and sauce that they give out. The milanesa was under seasoned and tough. The potatoes were slightly raw. It is wayyyy too expensive for this quality. We also got margaritas but my friends mango drink was terribleeee. Worst drink ever.
