In trying to decide where to have lunch on an Ash Wednesday, we decided on Sala Thai. This restaurant is situated in a small strip shop across from Sam's Club. Pretty easy to miss if you're not familiar with the area. The restaurant itself is a good size for small parties. There are traditional seats as well as hut-like booths. In all, it probably seats about 50 guests at capacity. It is decorated in what I can only assume is traditional Thai culture. I've only been here a couple of times and have only just tried the Fried Rice and Pad Thai. On this particular occasion we had the crab meat fried rice and tofu fried rice. The service was VERY fast and the food was excellent. If there is any advice I would go with at least medium spice next time. I got intimidated by the Thai spice scale and played it safe. The mild rice isn't bad... it just lacked that extra kick. This is no fault of the restaurant though. I'm the one who chickened out. As mentioned the service was very fast even though the restaurant had only one server who also doubled as hostess. Even though there was a small lunch rush, she checked in on us frequently and made sure we were well taken care of. I tried this place, take out, for the first time recently. I was so impressed. I ordered the drunken noodles with shrimp and some spring rolls. It was a huge portion filled with crisp, fresh veggies and fresh shrimp. I was so glad I tried it. I will definitely order again. Make sure you ask for the "mango plate" it was pretty awesome. also try out their spring rolls they were pretty solid. spicy-ness was pretty good and it prob helped that we went with some regular customers. they also made pad kee maw for us, it wasn't on the menu but we asked and they made it up, pretty nice of them. also like the other reviewers; yes thai places in cali are better but this was a pretty good thai place considering I didn't see too many around the area. so my 4 stars is based on the local thai food. Been coming here for years now. Been through all the owner changes as well. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in jax due to their distinct seasonings. Tonight I ordered a bowl of tom yum goong - it's a spicy and sour shrimp soup with lemongrass and mushroom. It def hit the spot tonight. The next dish was their sampler - a bunch of deep fried appetizers so not much to brag about. My main dish was curry duck. It was cooked in a red curry sauce - I ordered it medium but to me it was very mild. Overall our dinner was good, but their portions are really small for dinner prices. read more

This is one of my go-to lunch spots. Food: Cheap lunch menu, $8.50 for classic entrees like the green curry and pad thai. If you've never had a Thai tea, I highly recommend this bold and sweet (mixed with coconut milk) refreshment. Lunch meals come with a free fried veggie roll and a sweet & sour sauce. I must agree that I've sampled Lemongrass , Pattaya Thai and Sala Thai- Sala is good homemade, tasty food and affordable! I'm including a few pics and hope they help. The curry (green and red) is a favorite of mine, as well as the pad Thai and spring rolls. The Thai Tea isn't exactly the best I've had but it does hit the spot. Sala is conviently located on Beach Blvd across the street from the post office. I have been going here for years and they have the best Thai food in town. Other Thai restaurants great their dishes with entirely too much sauce &/or peanut oil but Sala Thai creates their dishes just right! They provide fast & friendly service both for in dining as well as call in take out orders. Their restaurants isn't huge, but just right in size providing a nice romantic feel. To the right side of their resturant they have little roof huts w/ pillows and bench seating. Their prices are very affordable and the dish sizes are vey large for the prices. My & I usually order two dishes of which we share and are always able to take home. Two dishes provide enough for four plate servings. Love this place! read more

3.0 stars This is the second time I've been to this restaurant. We were not impressed last time, but we decided to give this place another chance due to its convenient location. We were served by multiple waitresses throughout our meal. Most of them were nice except for the lady who took our order. Her attitude was a bit hostile, and we perceived her to be rude. So much so that one of the girls I was with was AFRAID to ask that waitress to bring her some spice because she looked "mean." A customer should never feel that way in a restaurant. Overall, the food was good and tasty, but it doesn't really taste like authentic Thai food. The portion wasn't very large. The yellow curry with pork was okay but not as good compared to other Thai restaurants in Jax. Phad see-ew tasted very good, and it was my wife's favorite dish out of everything we ordered. It was just your typically stirred fried noodles from any Asian restaurant. It's hard to mess up stirred fried noodles. Pharam longsong was alright, but the sauce was not the "creamy peanut butter" as described in the menu. It was more of a watery sauce, and I could only taste a little bit of peanut butter. We also ordered the Fried Bananas dessert with ice cream. The fried banana was really good when I mixed the banana with both ice cream and honey that it came with. Be careful when you're reading the menu. It says that Fried Banana is $3.50 and "Served with ice cream $4.00," which we interpreted as Fried Banana + ice cream = $4.00. However, it was actually $4.00 + $3.50 = $7.50 for Ice Cream + Fried Banana. I think they should fix it in their menu to say "Additional $4.00 for ice cream" for clarification. The ice cream was definitely not worth $4.00 in my opinion; the ice cream was crystallized and not creamy but it tasted okay when mixed with honey + fried banana. It's not a very good ice cream to eat by itself. If it wasn't for the rude waitress and the fried banana ice cream misunderstanding, then we would've given this place 4 stars. read more

The outside of he building made me question wanting to eat here. But I'm glad I did. I went on during lunch and it was somewhat busy. I was seated right away and promptly brought my drink order and an egg roll. That was delicious. I could eat a hundred of those things! I ordered garlic chicken and asks for medium spicy. The rice came out perfect. The vegetables in the garlic chicken made me think I've been eating vegetables all wrong to this point in my life. So delicious! Great overall experience. Went to this place on a whim and I'm glad I did. I haven't had the best run ins with Thai food, but today I finally found a place I like. It's definitely your mom and pops good ol' Thai. In fact I got the Cashew Beef dish and literally cleaned my plate! It reminded me of my mom's Filipino home cooking. Word of warning though! If you're not too keen on spices I'd forgo them here. This is authentic Thai food with the kick you'd expect from those chiles. I'd definitely advise to give this place a try though. read more

We have been eating Thai cuisine since our first visit (of many) to Thailand in the 1980's and really look forward to having it. There are several authentic, very good places in the city. We have eaten at Sala Thai a few times. Prices are high for what you receive and the food quality is inconsistent. Owner is from Laos. We will not be returning after witnessing the owner screaming at a table of customers. One of the men at the table requested an item not be included in his dish. When it was served, it had it so he mentioned it to the server. The owner started screaming, yelling and was so incredibly rude to the table and demanded they leave immediately. Other diners were shocked. We've traveled the world and US and never have witnessed such nasty treatment. We will spend our money elsewhere for better, authentic Thai cuisine. read more

Sala Thai has been around since I was a kid! My first visit I was probably about 8 years old. I'm 32 now and still obsess over their food! I've been to many Thai restaurants in and out of Jacksonville and I always come back to this place. It's all about their authenticity that keeps me coming back. Just to name a few of my favorites, for appetizers I like the papaya salad (medium). Their "medium" is pretty darn HOT. If you can't handle regular medium heat, then I advise you ordering just a 2 heat. 3 or higher, I can't guarantee you'll leave with a clean underwear. If you like a little curry flavor get the fried curry wontons. Those are amazing! Again with curry, as for my entree I usually switch around between the red curry and the massaman curry, beef or chicken will do just fine. For noodles, the phad thai is everyone's favorite, but I like more of the stronger and full on flavor, so I go with the phad see ew or the phad ba mee, depending on my mood. Those 2 are very flavorful and extra saucy! Don't forget their duck dishes. Can't go wrong with those either! You're welcome. read more

I am born and raised in jax FL and have been coming to Sala Thai pretty much my whole life. My mom is from Thailand and back in the 90s Thai restaurants were far and few between here in Jacksonville, so coming to Sala Thai was a nice place for my mother to get to eat and mingle with others from her culture. I usually go here for lunch as it is always a great amount of food for a relatively lower price than dinner. Also you get a free spring roll with your lunch as well. I got two things for lunch; the prik pow which was a chicken and fresh vegetable dish served with very flavorful red chili sauce and I also got the beef noodle soup. The prik pow was amazing, the sauce is was made the dish and it hits all the right sweet, spicy, and salty notes without over doing it. The vegetables were nicely steamed and crispy, while the meat was borderline over cooked side. The white rice that came with it was cooked perfectly and is always a great way to get every ounce of sauce off of your plate. The beef noodle soup is not as good as other traditional Thai soups like tom kha or tom yum, but for $6 you get a big bowl of noodles and choice of meat which is sure to fill anyone up. The noodles are not as soft as I would like and the meat was also slightly overcooked. I have had many dishes here at Sala Thai and for the most part all range from good to phenomenal. Keep in mind I am slightly biased towards Thai food(being half Thai and all) so go and taste for yourself. Stick with something out of the ordinary and stay away from dishes you can get anywhere else. read more

Being from California, I have high standards for Thai food since it's SO much closer to Thailand than Florida (typed in a snarky tone, of course). Truthfully, I was not impressed with Thai options in the Jax area until I came across Sala. We chose Sala because it was geographically located between where I was and where my freind was--yay for Yelp maps! Starter ordered was the crab rangoon--it was different. It was more curry cream cheese than imatation crab meat, but it was tasty enough. While the Pad Thai was different from what I am used it, it was good, and I woud order it again. Some more peanuts would have been nice, but otherwise it was a winner. Oh, medium is not spicy so consider hot or "Thai" hot. Friend really seemed to enjoy her red curry. I liked the flavor and thought it could be thicker. Again, if you want any spice, forget about medium. Service was great and staff was very friendly. They checked on us in our thai-roof booth often. Dessert was a treat as we had both the coconut ice cream AND fried bananas. While a little greasy, the fried bananas were wrapped in some rice and coconut flakes and I enjoyed them. Ate here last night with the hubby. It had been a while since I had been here since I don't live on that side of town anymore. The service last night was great, but the food didn't really amaze me like it did in the past. We both had Thai tea, and it was perfect (as always.) We ordered the crab delight (crab rangoons,) spring rolls, and Tom Yum goong for starters. The crab delights were pretty tasty, but the filling was on the skimpy side; and the spring rolls were really greasy. I had drunken noodles for my main and DH had the honey duckling. He liked his entree and finished it, even though it was too spicy for him! (Which was his fault--he underestimated the spice levels there.) The drunken noodles tasted just okay to me. I think the flavorfulness of my soup and the rangoons eclipsed whatever flavorfulness there was to the drunken noodles. We ordered sticky rice with mango for dessert, and that was decent. The mangoes were a bit on the tart side though. Overall, the food here is okay (except for the Thai tea--it's amazing.) The service here is always very good, so I would come back for lunch and for Thai tea. My rating : 3.5 stars read more

Decided to come here with the husband because we had a hankering for Thai curry. At the end of my meal I felt like I was having a love hate relationship with this place. First, we sat at a booth. I will definitely recommend that you skip on sitting in a booth as they are really uncomfortable. And no, it's not the "I'm too fat" kind of uncomfortable but more so because the tables are short, the carpet under the tables were squishy and moist and just not a good fit for any body type. The food itself was really tasty. The green curry that we got was good but the portions were very very small. the prices were a bit disproportionate to the amount of food received if you ask me but I guess that's normal for most Thai restaurants. The banana egg roll things that I got for dessert were okay but I could still taste how they were cold in the center from being in the freezer prior to frying. Overall, while I might like this place I can't imagine myself coming back, especially when the people serving the food from the kitchen don't even have their hair tied back as they come out of the kitchen. read more

But I would recommend you get an appetizer or soup if you're ordering anything other than pad thai. Otherwise, you'll be hungry afterwards. He got the beef Phad Thai, medium heat, and found the meat chewy and over cooked. My Phad Basil, medium heat, was a bit blah and lacked appeal. The portion was small and I'm afraid the spice is mistaken for and over-powers the flavor. We didn't bother with dessert, nothing caught our eye.
