Salata is always a hit with me! I got a wrap with lots of vegetables and chicken. The veggies are super fresh and crisp, the pesto chicken is a favorite of mine and the dressing always adds so much flavor. The prices have significantly increased over time and one wrap with chicken is $15, which is crazy because it used to be $11-12. One of the workers was slightly rude when I asked a question, but this was the first time I've had an issue with an employee. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is always super clean and it's nice and bright inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

What a great healthy alternative for a meal! All of the items are fresh and a great way to get a solid meal without consuming too many calories. Salata exceeded my expectations! I was searching for a buffet style, healthy restaurant and decided to try Salata. When looking online for reviews for Salata, it perplexed me that Yelp had a lower review score as opposed to the high reviews on Google... It's only fair to review it myself and I was certainly not disappointed! Salata is not a buffet ,but rather, a cafeteria style assembly line to which you build your own salad. The customer starts by selecting one of the following meal sizes: a burrito style, a small bowl or a regular ( both bowls are actually very generous portions!) The following process are a simple four-step procedure (after you select the portion/size bowl): (1) Select your base (which lettuces you want). (2) Select your toppings (comprised of many, many options of fresh vegetables, fruits and cheeses.) (3) Select your dressing (there must be over a dozen to choose from. All are very delicious!) (4) Select your protein (meats and/or seafoods.) *At the end, you can top it off with nuts, tortillas strips, croutons or even a multigrain croissant. Once the staff have added all of the ingredients that you have selected, they toss it together with a pair of tongs so everything is well coated and well mixed together. The staff is very friendly and ensures that your eating areas and restrooms are clean and sanitized. The soda fountain, teas and lemonades area is also kept very clean as well! The overall ambiance of the restaurant has a nice fresh, fun feel to it (almost like you're at a juice bar but you're there for salads instead.) I definitely give Salata two very well deserved big thumbs up! It's a fantastic alternative to routine hot diner meals and it's not a burden on the wallet, as it's approximately only $13 per person for a generous salad and drink. I will be eating here routinely!

This particular Salata is very chintzy on the toppings when you order it online for pick up. Majority of the salad is all lettuce.

We did not sit there because it was hot. We sat indoors. It was just me and my child. Our waitress did not mention that kids (12 and under) eat free all day Mondays (and 10 am - 12 noon on weekends). I learned this from reading Google reviews after we had already ordered. After I asked, she confirmed the promotion and allowed us to add a kids meal since we had already ordered an adult entrée, which is the required condition. We ordered a kids' pizza. You can pepperoni for $1 but it's a free add on Mondays. Not gonna lie, pizza tasted off. Kid said it and I ignored her. Then I tried it and ack. We brought the rest home and stuck it in the fridge but it tasted even worse the next day. Tossed in trash. Service required frequent prompting. Like pulling teeth. I had to ask about the drink included with the kids meal. And yes Milk is an option. I also had to ask about the cookie that is supposed to come with the meal. We did not receive one. She said they had chocolate chip only as oatmeal and sugar cookies were gone. I said fine. We never got anything. So I went to the take out stand and we were told they were out of cookies. But they offered us a small brownie instead. Unfortunately however it contained nuts. For an appetizer, we ordered the cast iron spinach artichoke dip. The chip‑to‑dip ratio was not balanced. We ran out of chips way before the dip was gone. We also ordered the cast iron skirt steak (yes lots of cast irons). I requested medium rare. It arrived medium well and slightly tough however. You'd think they could easily tell this since they slice it all up before serving. It was not seasoned, but presumably that is because it is intended to be used with the chimichurri sauce provided. No salt on the tables. Overall, the experience and the food were marginal and borderline acceptable, but definitely unremarkable. Service is another story however. She was nice, just not very good at her craft.

Black Walnut uses the Pay Before Eating concept which I have mixed feelings about. It makes me feel like I'm at a fast food place but the food is anything but the usual stuff most fast food places serve and in all my times eating here the food has been very good. It just seems odd to order at the counter and pay first. I think the idea is that it is faster for staff, a server will bring you your food and refill drinks. And on the plus side, you don't have to try to get the attention of your server when you are done to get a check and pay.; you just get up and leave. I kind of wonder if their servers get the same kind of tips as they would if you paid at the end. OK, about our lunch. It was very good. We shared the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, very creamy with good flavors. They offer a $12 lunch special with 5 or 6 choices, a main and one side. Not bad for $12 but we opted to order something from the main selections. My wife ordered the Pot Roast Grilled Cheese sandwich which was very good, and it came with a small salad and cup of soup so was quite filling. The pot roast was super tender! I ended up getting the Fish Tacos, they use mahi mahi and the fish was moist and tender. We also split a side of their sweet potato fries because they are just so darn good. Searching for a banh mi sandwich with tofu for a quick lunch takeout, I was pleased to see that the restaurant was close to interstate 45 for a quick stop on the way back to Houston (timing is everything to beat the traffic in this area - IYKYK). I ended up ordering both the tofu vermicelli and a tofu banh mi because obviously, you need to try more than one thing. It was fine. Out of the two dishes, the vermicelli was my favorite. It came with a generous portion of noodles, a small lettuce and shredded carrot salad, several large wedges of tofu in a kind of curry sauce, and the classic vermicelli sauce to drizzle over the whole dish. The flavor was good, although what I would consider a slight deviation from traditional flavors, and overall filling. Vermicelli is always a dependable choice and I was satisfied with this dish. The tofu banh mi, however was nothing special. I prefer the bread to be a bit more crispy on the outside with a soft interior and this one was fairly soft all over. Inside, the tofu really needed more seasoning, seemingly cooked without any added flavors except for the fried finish. I added some hoisin sauce but still it needed something more. I'm always eager to try new places but not sure that this one will be a repeat for me.
