My luck at restaurants hasn't been all that great lately, but tonight, we turned that trend around. We headed out to Sallie's Bistro in Dunedin for some Belgian food. We started with a coconut carrot curry soup, mushroom bisque & mushroom toast, and fried brussel sprout salad. Our mains were a Belgian beef stew simmered in dark ale and chocolate along with pork tenderloin jager in a red wine mushroom sauce. We finished off with some chocolate mousse. Dinner here was so lovely. You don't realize the unattractive plaza you're in. Pretty decor and nice lighting. Kieran served us. He's kind and helpful. We appreciate his recommendations. My husband and I share the beet salad that was delicious. Complete with pistachios, citrus, goat cheese and a light vinaigrette. We also shared the wahoo fish special and a beef stew. The fish was a little dry. The stew was incredible! The perfect saltiness. The table shared the mushroom toast. If you love mushrooms order this! Rich mushrooms on buttery bread. I am so happy I finally made it to Sallie's Bistro in Dunedin. From the moment you walk in and are warmly greeted by Kieran, one of the owners, you feel like you are set to have a lovely dining experience. It's been on my list to try for a while since they opened. My Friend and Broker at Coastal Properties Group Forbes said it is wonderful and one of their favorites. And it's often mentioned on FB and Instagram for N Pinellas Foodies, Palm Harbor and Dunedin Happenings as well and I can see why. Small but well curated, Belgian beer selection. I had a refreshing white Belgian Ale the owner recommended. The Chef started us off with a yummy & balanced amuse-bouche of an apple and curry soup which was yummy surprise. My husband had Carbonnade a La Flamande with Frites - (Beef stewed in Belgian triple Ale & Callebaut dark chocolate). He called it a luscious Belgian Mole and it was so good he was basically licking the bowl surreptitiously and I couldn't blame him. The sauce Chef Michele creates is that good. And another Star Dish is their Fresh Mussels. They offer them with at least 4 or 5 options but all are steamed in the traditional style and so fresh! For mine, I chose the addition of Garlic, Fresh Parsley and a Touch of Cream. They were divine especially with those perfectly crisp imported Belgian Frites (french fries). Our friends tried a few items from their recently added steak menu as well. Outstanding! Service was impeccable and friendly with a nice intimate ambiance. We decided to order from the daily specials menu and were not disappointed! We received an amuse bouche of mushroom soup to start. Ordered the Cheese croquettes and they absolutely lived up to the hype, and not to be missed. My friend enjoyed the Bouillabaisse and I had the Boeff Bourguignon. Both had savory flavors and were plated beautifully. Our checks came delivered in cute boxes. A hidden gem in Duneden. If you want to try something different in food, this is the place to go. How many times can you say you have tried Belgian food. From the start (Mussels Croquettes) to the finish ( Fish Stew and Carbonade) everything was excellent. Everything is cooked and served by a husband and wife team who were nice enough to come talk to us after dinner. Prices are very fair for the quality of food served. Quiet quant dining room. I finally got to try Sallie's this week after seeing delicious looking posts for months and the photos don't even do the food justice. It was a phenomenal experience through and through. The restaurant is decorated beautifully, it has a vintage yet modern feel. The lighting was perfect, intimate but still light enough to see what you're eating and take nice photos! Our waitress was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable and we had the pleasure of meeting the owners/chef. They were super friendly and kind, it was so nice to chat with them and thank them for the fantastic meal. For our meals we opted for the Fall prix fixe menu that is offered with accompanying wine or beer as well. My friend got the wine pairing and was blown away, each was better than the last and she said they all paired perfectly. The menu consisted of an amuse bouche which was a delicious herb soup, creamy pumpkin bisque and Gruyère cherry bacon jam sourdough toast, ale glazed short ribs with squash and Belgian potato croquettes, pumpkin tiramisu and to end - coffee or tea with Belgian cookies. Everything was delicious but the Gruyère toast was so so good and the short ribs were the BEST I've ever had in my entire life, the sauce was good enough to eat on its own but all together it was just phenomenal - so much so that I am returning this weekend!! read more

Wait what?! This little gem is in a strip mall. Once you pass the front door you are transported to a European bistro. The food was excellent! We started with the beef tartare. There was only two of us so if you order it bring friends. The portions were very good for the price. I had the garlic curry mussels and they were delicious and the fries were so crispy. My husband the pork tenderloin jager and was so happy with his choice. We will definitely be back. We have have guests often and can't wait to introduce them to this hidden gem. read more

Tampa Bay Friends: it is not often that I make restaurant recommendations. However, I just had an absolutely amazing experience Sallie's Bistro in Dunedin. Michele Kamayi and Kieran Uylenbroek arrived in the US in March of this year from Belgium and brought the amazing cuisine with them! Having traveled to Belgium many times before, we always had love for the amazing way they create dishes, and of course who could forget the Chocolate! This is a hidden gem. Tucked away in a shooing center, the food is absolutely incredible. The ambience is intimate. The state was amazing. And the food, I am so fricking full! Always a great meal We had another terrific dinner at Sallie's Bistro last week. Wednesday is their mussels night so if you're interested in having a huge bowl of luscious mussels and having a choice of six different sauces AND a free beer, call and reserve your table! You will not be disappointed. We were joined by friends from out of town, who thought their meal was delicious. Service is friendly and efficient. Their amuse-bouche was a small cup of soup and a crisp roll and butter beautifully presented. We started our meal with Sallie's shrimp croquettes, a favorite of ours that we always begin our meal with. Then we had baguettes with two different flavored butters. We all ordered mussels, distinguishing our individuality with different sauces and beer. Pomme frites and more bread to soak up the sauces was served. There is a regular menu and the owners offer special seasonal menus as well. Everything we've had on past visits was always delicious. We love this restaurant. It's somewhat hidden in the opposite corner of the Walmart shopping center on Main Street. Don't let this deter you. It's a real Belgium bistro. Ahhhmazing! Don't let the spot fool you. The food was spectacular! Been to a few small bistros in the area which are great but I think this IS my favorite spot. Had a vegetable broth, small toast prosciutto with other intricate ingredients as we waited and it was oh so tasty. Then I had the filet mignon recommended, it was so tender juicy full of flavor. Finding a great new place to eat close to home is alway great, but what about finding a place that is run by owner husband and wife that completely exceed your expectations! Chef Michele is beyond incredible. Probably one of the best chef's in Tampa Bay. Kirin is very welcoming, and makes great recommendations for pairing food and beverages. Great friendly staff. One of my girlfriends heard about this restaurant and asked me to come along to try it and my goodness, it did not disappoint! I chose the Fall prix fixe menu with the wine pairings and I was truly blown away! Not only were the wine choices perfect with every dish, but every dish was delectable! My favorite item was the pumpkin bisque with bacon jam toast! Service was incredible and the ambiance, decor and lighting were gorgeous too. It has a 1920s glam feel. We went during their soft opening phase, and the food was outstanding. Every dish was flavorful and service was on point. Usually at this stage, a restaurant is still working out the kinks, but everything was spectacular during my visit. I'm not sure how long these dishes will be on the menu, but the oyster mushroom bisque and the croquettes were incredibly flavorful, the cod was well seasoned and cooked, the caesar had great flavor with a somewhat lighter-feeling dressing, and the red beet panna cotta was astonishingly good. My parents convinced me to get the mussels, and I never get the mussels (you normally have to request mussels with your reservation on open table in the notes, Wednesdays only, but they had extras due to a cancellation). I'm glad they did. They were phenomenal, the garlic & parsley flavor was prominent but not overwhelming. The mussels by themselves were delicious, so fresh (ordered the night before!), and the portion was enormous. One order could easily serve as a huge appetizer for 3-4 people. Plus, came with fries and a free beer. My parents also greatly enjoyed their dishes. Bay scallops and pasta for my mother, and a Belgian mixed seafood stew topped with cheese for my father. The pasta came with hearty chunks of mushrooms as well. The inside had a nice ambiance, dark ceiling and marble tiled floors. Gentle piano lounge music played the whole evening, and the other full tables gave a nice background murmur. Don't let the location fool you, you forget the outside world the moment you sit down. My only regret, is waiting until my last evening in town to come. I'll have to make an earlier reservation on my next trip so I might be able to come twice in one trip. read more

What a great find!!! We wanted to go somewhere different for my brother-in-law anniversary dinner. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, we felt extremely welcomed. It was like having dinner at a family member's home. The service was outstanding. Very attentive and responsive to our requests. Every bite tonight was a great bite. We ordered five appetizers to start and each one was wonderful. The portion size was outstanding. The appetizers were entree sized. Michele & Kieran were great hosts. Our entrees were amazing. This Belgium Bistro on Main Street is fantastic. sallie's is on the old Trattoria Gaetano space but don't be discouraged, its gotten a make over and feels like you're in Bruges. But go for the food. Do yourself a favor and order the Steak Tartar Supreme, simply amazing. There is great selection of Belgium Beer each with its own glass, as it should be, and the wine list, while small, is well curated. This restaurant was a huge surprise! It is small and quaint, but you will be blown away by the quality of the food and attention to detail. We had the pork medallions in mustard sauce and the pasta with scallops. I have celiac so I must be extra cautious when eating at a new establishment. Everything was clearly marked! They even made a gf pistachio cake that was DIVINE for desert! The wine list is interesting with a beautiful selection of by the glass wines. Absolutely everything was perfect! Went on a Saturday night for dinner. The service was good. Food was excellent. For those who like beer, they have a good selection. Wine too. The ambience was nice for an intimate evening. Lovely dinner with friends last night. The ambiance is lovely; sedate and classy. Thankfully not noisy, so you can enjoy conversations. Service was excellent; Kieran helpful with food and drink suggestions. Understand that this is European style dining, so much more relaxed pacing...if you want quick, this is not the place. The interior transformation is nothing less than amazing. Dark walls, gleaming woods, soft textures and well chosen artwork provide a sophisticated yet relaxing ambiance. Host owner Kieran is welcoming and informative on menu and well curated wine and beer selections. Chef owner Michele, warm and lovely and working miracles in kitchen. Shrimp croquettes were creamy inside and deliciously crispy outside. The mushroom toast flavorful and large enough for sharing. Entrees were the Carbonnade, a rustic beef stew made with a dark Belgian ale which was rich and satiny. The creamy chicken vol au vent, reminiscent of Chicken a la King but with a Belgian touch, included little veal meatballs. We shared a dessert which could only be called euphoria in a jar.
