Came here because I had never had Salt & Straw (S&S) before (even though they have locations in OR and the Bay Area), and really wanted to try their seasonal offerings (we came around Halloween time!). After reviewing the online menu, I was definitely intrigued by all the unique flavors S&S had going for them! We arrived at around 8 or 9pm on a cold fall night - not the ideal time for ice cream, but who cares! The inside was dimly lit for an ice cream shop and there were several large groups inside enjoying their frozen treats. The layout of the store is a little strange as there is a large wall compiled of purchasable swag, and then tucked in the corner is the register and ice cream displays. We were helped by a nice gentleman who gave me so many samples, I almost got full off of them lol Anyways, I was able to sample a majority of the Halloween flavors. I also sampled a tiny spoon of the Beecher's cheese with peppercorn toffee and eventually ordered that in a cup. Whoa, this scoop was decadent! It was so rich, I had a little trouble finishing my kid-sized cup... but it was SO good. I powered through even though my tummy was saying "no more pls." I'm sensitive to dairy, so I always get a split scoop of one of their milk based flavors and one of their dairy free flavors to make it easier to digest. This is hands down my favorite and it has paired perfectly with the Arbequina Olive Oil, coffee love nuts, and other seasonal flavors like the berry slab pie. I love that this ice cream is not too sweet either. However, I've noticed that some flavors do have artificial ingredients and corn syrups which is a major bummer (I knocked off a star for that)! Therefore, I recommend looking up the ingredients on the website ahead of time if you want to avoid that because only some have it whilst others have all natural ingredients. This is an impeccable "ice cream space," and I'll definitely be back. I had a chocolate dough thing and a traditional chocolate. One thing you want to note: this is super rich and thick ice cream, so if you're what the kids call an almond mom, go somewhere else. I over-ordered the two scoop, but it felt like I was eating an entire carton of Ben and Jerry's. Second, this is not the place to go if you aren't fully onboard with the salted trend. I'm personally not, but they don't do it too thick. That said, if it's an issue, either go somewhere else, or query them about the flavors without a strong salt taste. Staff is super nice. Fast forward to this summer in Seattle and, of course, Salt & Straw was #1 on our list for ice cream. Limited our samples to the summer specials and a few classic Seattle flavors which again were brought to our party of 11 on small stainless steel spoons. Wait time on a Saturday afternoon was less than ten minutes. All of their flavors are made in house in small batches, using hormone free dairy from a 5th generation farm. This Ballard location has beautiful floor to ceiling windows, and limited counter seating. My friends and I came here on a weekday evening, and there was only a short line. I ordered a scoop of the Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero on a waffle cone, and communicated that I had not decided on the flavor of my second scoop yet. I wanted to sample a few! The young male employee scooped my first flavor, hurriedly handed me the cone, and began helping the next customer. I had no opportunity to sample anything, and felt very rushed. They were not even busy. I took this as a sign that maybe I should eat less ice cream (jk, I ate most of my husband's Gooey Chocolate Brownie and Strawberry Balsamic combo). The Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero just tasted like vanilla with berry jam swirls. No detectable goat cheese or habanero, but the consistency of the ice cream was deliciously rich and creamy. There was no wait when we arrived, which was a shock to me. I'm used to long lines out the building during the weekends so this was a pleasant surprise. As usual, a worker took our entire group and helped us out from start to finish. She let us try as many flavors as we wanted, adding in the process or the story behind the flavor as well as her opinions. We're never in Seattle so I got a kid scoop of the Ellenos Yogurt and Matcha. I really liked how it was just slightly tart and it tasted almost like a cheesecake. It was almost like little frozen chunks of yogurt were blended into the ice cream. I was able to try the Beecher's Cheese with Peppercorn Toffee too. I would've liked this flavor more if not for the peppercorn. In the beginning, it tastes pretty good until the spice kicks in at the end. It's just something that I wouldn't get. Now that I've had a taste of their Seattle flavors, I'll probably try some other ice cream places in the area if I come back. The strawberry tres leches contain bits of cake and jam with one of the best strawberry ice cream I've ever had. Cinnatopia taste just like a cinnamon roll but creamy without being overwhelmingly sweet. It was so complex, and intricate because there was so many flavors and textures that are just in one bite! The best thing is that no flavor or texture overpower each other, and so everything you taste and feel are perfect together. It's a given. This Ballard location is in the main business centre, and the shop has enough space to hang around indoors, but limited seating, just like at Capitol Hill. Staff is always happy to help. Whenever there's a line multiple employees will go down the line and get samples for those standing before they're at the counter, so making a decision is easy breezy and there's no back-up at the counter. For as many samples as you wish to try, the line always goes quickly. Don't let it discourage you, even if the line is outside the door, which has happened several times here. My ultimate favorite flavor is the Gooey Chocolate Brownie! If you were that kid (or adult) who licked the bowl after making brownies then this ice cream flavor is for you. I do like, however, that they always have a handful of monthly, rotating flavors, which are always unique and flavorful. Decadent, flavorful and the right amount of sweet -Salt & Straw won't disappoint. My husband ordered a double of the chocolate brownie not expecting for there to be as much brownie as there was and he was so happy he didn't run out of it within the first couple of bites! We had had a big dinner so he unfortunately couldn't finish it but it was so good we couldn't waste it so we scooped half of it into a container for later haha. I tried the mango habanero sorbet which has quite a quick in the aftertaste (in a good way). I ended up going for the cinnamon snickerdoodle since I wanted a rich scoop but will definitely be getting the sorbet once it's a bit hotter outside. The cinnamon snickerdoodle has snickerdoodle cookie dough and is perfectly seasoned -I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something rich but not quite as heavy as the chocolate brownie. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I wish the waffle cones were a bit thicker/crunchier. The staff is super helpful and friendly -they'll give you their personal recs and don't mind you trying multiple flavors before making up your mind (which is great if you're indecisive like me). Came by on a weekday after dinner and there was only a few people in line. There are so many interesting looking flavors that piqued my interest. I didn't know which one to choose and wanted to sample all of them. So we decided to do a Flight, where you get 4 separate kid scoops, like a beer flight but with ice cream. I think this is the way to go unless you are really wanting one particular flavor. Or just do whatever you want. If memory serves me correctly, I think we got the Ellenos Yogurt & Matcha, Elm Coffee & Westland Whiskey, Coconut Mint Chocolate Chip Cupcake, and Forte's Lemon & Pepper White Chocolate. All the flavors were very good, creamy, VERY UNIQUE but super tasty! Their flavors aren't weak where you barely taste the flavor, to me it's pretty bold where you can taste exactly what you ordered. I really enjoyed the flight, I actually contemplated on doing another flight back to back, but had some self control and went home. Staff was friendly, a few spots to sit inside, prices will seem pricey for ice cream but you should know that before going there. Glad this location isn't far from home so I can indulge in some tasty ice cream. Yes, there was a daunting line at the entrance. Hmmm did I pay enough for street parking? (Yes) Beautiful, bright, and inviting interior. Pints of various ice cream flavors are available for takeout ($10.50 each) where one can bypass the line entirely. Loved the smiles from the enthusiastic little ones in line. But then, you'd have to be a total cranky crab without a smile in an ice cream shop. Also btw, there are vegan flavors available. There are retail items also available from local and Pacific Northwest purveyors, like caramels from Jonboy and Jacobsen Salt, for example. The line actually moves fast and efficiently. A S&S staff member gets paired up with your party in line. You can request samples and place your order directly with that person . Split or number of scoops, toppings, cone or cup, milkshake...pretty much round up the decision making process. By the time you reach the register, your order is ready for payment. I got one scoop of the Fran's Almond Gold Bar (part of the limited Seattle Chocolatier series) and one of the Elm Coffee and Westland Whiskey served in a compostable cup plus spoon (2 scoops $6.95). The Homie got two scoops of the Elm Coffee and Westland Whisky topped with hot fudge ($1 additional). 4 scoops, 1 topping between us with tax/tip came out to around $16 total. Big splurge! So why 4 and not 5 Yelp stars? 1) place the handmade caramels and gourmet chocolate before the register 2) consider outdoor sidewalk benches 3) coffee (or whisky) wasn't assertive. This in comparison to Tillmook pints with Stumptown coffee, or the coffee flavors offered at Bluebird and Molly Moon 4) The Homie preferred the copious amount of hot fudge provided at Molly Moon You know how ramen spots are plentiful on Capitol Hill? Well in Ballard in close proximity and walking distance radius to Salt and Straw, there are additional places to get gelato and ice cream, dessert treats from Hot Cakes (across the street!), cupcakes, doughnuts, pastries, pie...getting a sugar rush just posting about this! It'll be interesting what the long term outlook will be. The winner are the consumers presented with so many choices. The Ballard site opened yesterday (2/9/18), with next Friday (2/16/18) the Capitol Hill site scheduled next up to bat. read more

I love this place sooooo much! Everything we've had here has been delicious. Since I can't eat egg or dairy I've focused on the vegan ones. I love the mint cupcake one. They now have the May flavors featuring fresh flowers. I had the split in a bowl of orange blossom and Rachel's Raspberry Ginger Beer. My kids both had the chocolate rose petal and loved it, they both had it split with chocolate brownie and strawberry and loved it. They love the waffle cones. The line moves fast and the service is great. read more

The line was 20-30 people long but only lasted 10 minutes! No samples due to COVID but the flavors had in depth descriptions which helped with my decision. The seasonal flavors were all berry related which sounded scrumptious but I went with the classics. It was good both - but not great. The flavors were a little to subtle for me. Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough - this had the perfect mix of sweet and salty. Not too many chunks of chocolate chip, which I was bummed about. Cold Brew Coffee Cashew Praline- subtle coffee flavor. Wish it had more of a kick to it. Staff is great, lots of pints to take home and unique swag sold in store. read more

I enjoy this chain, both this location and the Capital Hill spot have a great friendly vibe and of course some amazing ice cream.... Flavors are unique and come across as listed, they say Coco Puffs and Cold Brew.... well boy howdy, that's what you get!! The only reason I drop both locations a star is the lack of parking and it a tad expensive, but for high quality it comes with the territory.... Lines move fast, so don't let that deter you from checking them out. read more
