Our group was not plagued with the service issues other reviews have mentioned, but the food was less impressive than I wanted it to be for the money. I went to Salt with a group of 7, and we were promptly seated (on a reservation) and served. They were quick to refill water, which I appreciate. The complimentary bread was a nice sourdough. Our food was mixed as to when it came out, with several of our group merely ordering salads and apps for their meal. I ordered the ribeye with the filet sides, since they were out of filet that day. I was ok. I expect a ribeye to be well marbled, and it was, but for some reason they had sliced the steak in half before it was served, and it obviously hadn't rested long enough before it was served. I ordered medium rare and got a steak that was well at the ends and rare in the middle. It almost seemed like they sliced it to check the temp (and didn't even get that right). I think the biggest issue that I had was the presentation. The oblong plate was covered in the sides, and the steak was placed on top of them. This made it REALLY hard to eat - I had to pick the sides out from under the steak to make room on the plate to actually be able to cut the steak. It was a huge steak, but it was inconsistently cooked, the sides were so buried it was hard to eat, and the sides themselves were not hot. My mom ordered the ribs (a special to replace the filet), and she also complained that her meal was not hot. Overall, mediocre, over-priced meal. It would not be my first choice to go back to next time I'm in Juneau. read more

Our party of four showed up 10 minutes early for our 5pm dinner res. The hostess/waitress sat us at our table and we were greeted by our server. He goes on to explain that the kitchen doesn't start serving dinner until 5... ok dude, by the time we put in our drinks and apps and order... MAGIC, more than 10 minutes has vanished. I asked the waiter what beer they had because there was no beer list... dude was borderline clueless and had to peek over to the bar and see what was on tap. I get it that weed is legal in AK, but maybe lay off the ganja before work. His beer recommendation did redeem himself a little bit. I had the honey gold from some local brewery... good beer. We ordered the deviled eggs and bacon and French onion dip for appetizers. The deviled eggs were weak... they said variety on the menu and the only difference was the garnish on top... LAZY. I could make better deviled eggs at home with ingredients I have on-hand and be more creative. The dip was decent. The house made chips probably being the best part. WE WERE NOT SERVED COMPLIMENTARY BREAD! I only noticed this after our entrees were served and the next table over had bread... with the same waiter. Lay off the weed bro! The salmon risotto that my girl had was lackluster, the salmon was dry, risotto had consistency of mashed potatoes and the dish had no flavor. My girlfriend's mom had the brick chicken... dry and lacking flavor. The dark meat was alright, but it's pretty hard to over cook dark meat. I had the "salt" burger. If you're going to offer a burger and name it after your joint, MAKE SURE THAT ITS GOOD AF. This was not, it was mediocre. Patty too thick, lacked a good char that a good burger needs and again, lacking seasoning. The bun-to-meat ratio was off, could be easily remedied by making the patty thinner. The fries were ok, nothing special. If you're paying these prices, you'd expect better quality. Decided to done here based on a recommendation from a local. Hostess and server were very friendly. The wait for my first drink was a bit longer than desired but it happens. French 75 - if you like sparkling wine or champagne with notes of elderdflower, you may enjoy this. Scallops Crudo - Wow. Simple dish, bursting with flavor. You may, at first, be taken aback by how small the portions are but, trust me, this is a must-try Crab bisque - creamy with bits of crab. Tasty. Corn fritters - mmmmmmm! Has a smoky gouda flavor to it, with a hint of chilli pepper. Delicious. This meal has been a tapestry of different flavors. My tummy is pleased. read more

We were in Juneau for one night at the start of a three week trek through Alaska. Blown away (not in a good way) but what a tourist town it was. Wow! cruise ship central. Looking for a higher end meal without the tourists and found it at Salt. We shared the King Salmon meatballs for our appetizer along with a bowl of Tracy's Kind Crab Bisque and they were excellent. My wife wanted the halibut but they were out so she had the salmon and I had the jerk chicken. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was a fantastic main dish. The jerk chicken did not match up to my definition of a "jerk" dish flavor or heat wise but it was tasty. While I would not order that dish again we would most definitely go back if we find ourselves in Juneau. I was looking for an appropriate place to celebrate my birthday. As you research Juneau, you'll see what the mixed bag of options available. Salt stood out. But would it live up to hopeful expectations? We started with a scallop amuse bouche that got things off on the right foot. The King salmon meatballs were totes yummy! Then, in keeping with the theme - powered down the King salmon bisque. Also, quite tasty. My main course featured a prawn stir fry over quinoa. Service was friendly and attentive. 5 of us had brunch and it was amazing! Unfortunately, the wait staff called in sick so the chef served us as well as cooked the superb food, all with a smile! The coffee was served in a French press. So I took a random trip to Juneau at the end of October because.... Who knows.... And didn't factor in the fact that they are a very seasonal city and dinning options would be limited, to say the least. Apparently Yelp wasn't up to date on what restaurants were actually open, which was nearly none of them. Then I looked at this place. Hoping it would be open as I did a drive by I found I was in luck. Once I got past the deceiving "closed" sign on the door, which thankfully they just forgot to spin around, I stepped into a dinning environment that I would never have expected to be in this beautiful Alaska city. I felt as if I stepped off the streets of a big city in the lower 48 into a beautifully designed and, dare I say, "hip" restaurant. The service was impeccable, the bartender was welcoming, funny, and all the other qualities that describe a valuable member of a restaurant service team. She told us that the restaurant was recently "revived" by the head chef, who recently purchased the establishment. Bravo head chef, quite a great restaurant and your food and ambiance made my night. If/when I am in Juneau again, I will be sure to add your restaurant to my to do list. read more

When I am on the road, in a town with many options for dinner, I try to never eat at the same restaurant more than once. Salt is forcing me to break my own rule. I could eat at this place every, single night. Everything, from the feel and look of the interior, the tasty cocktails, but most of all, every dish is fresh, well plated, flavorful. So far, I've had their halibut dish and their salmon. I would love to know what is in the broth of that dish. Salt would stand up to any restaurant scene, in any city in the country. Best meal of our trip....so far. We had lunch there and it was not crowded. Service was awesome and the ambiance was great. Nice to get away from cruise crowd. (Learned later our captain was eating two tables away from us) We split a salad and I had the crab bisque. We ordered the sourdough bread basket. All very good and fresh. My wife and I came to have a fancy dinner on our last night in Juneau after friends said it was the place to go and be romantical. Waking in, the ambiance is nice. Himalayan salt candles on the tables. Into it. The hostess couldn't find my reservation. Stressed us out by saying they were fully booked and we weren't on there. I suggested she look it up by my phone number, which they had also taken over be phone. She found it. Found out they wrote my name wrong. She asked if we didn't mind sitting upstairs. We didn't. Then without comment, sat us downstairs. We met Sam the waiter. Things that Sam actually said to us: "... the Alaskan scallop special is made with a papaya sauce today. It's the pink papaya, not the one that smells like, well, you know, hahahaha..." *awkward laughter* Does this waiter hate vagina? Does he hate me for having one? Did I mention we're lesbians? When I asked about the Salmon Lumpia app, he said: "We're out of salmon roe I think." "Hmm. So are you definitely out of it?" "Yeah, probably. We haven't had it for three days and the chef is gone at some competition somewhere." "Oh." "Yeah I'd be bummed." Does this waiter hate the chef? Does he miss the chef? We'd heard from friends around town and read an article in the local paper, that Juneau was glowing with pride over the fact that they were being represented by Lionel Uddipa at a cooking competition in New Orleans. Just so you know, Sam is having none of that hype. Lionel needa come back to him. Sam came to see us twice after we were seated and didn't ask us for a drink order either time. When he came back a third time 10 min later he wanted the whole order at once. Apps Ordered: Panzanella salad - burrata, red onion thinly sliced, bread and balsamic was on point. The tomatoes had little flavor. Roasted beets - really nice with the praline purée and citrus. After our empty appetizer plates were taken away, we waited another 15 min for our main dishes. The realization that we were waiting a long time happened when the waiter walked up, said "oh, man" and turned back to the kitchen. He immediately came back with the mains which were obviously just sitting in the window. When he returned he mumbled and tried to half blame the kitchen by saying, "We got slowed down there but I think I'm back on my game now." Mains ordered: The Alaskan scallop special with coconut rice - really delicious and a little spicy in a slow building way. The filet mignon with grains, carrot and broccolini - the steak was cooked to order, tender. The grains were tasty. The carrots and broccolini were undercooked and flavorless. Dipping sauce was really tasty and came in handy. While we were eating he came by and asked, "do you need salt or pepper yet?" Does this waiter hate the food here? Throughout our meal, the waiter would approach us, and wipe his sweaty hair and face with his bare hand and wipe it on his apron. He'd put a plate down and wipe his sweaty face. *blink blink* Dessert ordered: Creme brûlée - evenly glazed, very nice. Chocolate pots de creme - topped with a cherry compote and chocolate cake that tasted of port and was really nice with the pudding beneath. Meringue cookie on the side was as it should be. TLDR; service lacks respect and professionalism; food is good but choose wisely to get your money's worth. read more

When we arrived at Salt, we had our pick of the place so we got a seat by the window. We checked out the drinks list and asked if they had mocktails. We were told no, that they didn't have them so we got a Coke and an iced tea. Our server returned and said that the bartender could make us something - they had strawberry and basil, would that be ok. We were so happy that they were willing to accommodate us. We decided on the special Lobster Bisque and the Prosciutto Wrapped Scallops. They were both very good. We cleaned our plates. The scallops were small but the prosciutto was nice and crispy. For dinner we got the special Surf and Turf (steak and shrimp) and the Butcher's Cut (hangar steak). Oddly enough, the steaks needed salt. I'm also not so sure the hangar steak was a hangar steak - it had the consistency of a filet but it was good none-the-less. The mashed were pretty dense too and the meals not super hot but all-in-all, the flavors were good. Our drinks ended up being a strawberry with mint and a raspberry with lemon which were good but we later heard the bartender complaining that they were having to make mocktails - I think another table ordered them as well. It is a beautiful restaurant and the waiters/waitresses are very kind. I have been to Salt twice, the first time was great. The food was awesome and it was really a beautiful setting. I love the interior design and the way the tables are set up. It does not feel cramped. However, we had Mother's Day brunch there this afternoon and many of us were not pleased. My mom and I both got the filet mignon and my grandma and fiancé got the french toast. The filet mignon was extremely rare, I could not eat it. Luckily my mom's was okay enough to eat because she was very hungry. I had to ask our waitress to please cook my food a little bit longer, as I could just not stomach the raw piece of meat. It was given back to me, still extremely rare. At this point it had been well over an hour so I ate what I could (the edges) and the potatoes but I was quite disappointed. My grandma and fiancé had asked our waitress for syrup because the french toast was quite dry and did not have butter. Unfortunately they do not have syrup. This rating is for my most recent visit to celebrate a friend's birthday. I love the environment and the service has always been decent. I've felt that, in the past, the food has been inconsistent (over the last three years). Sometimes really great and sometimes pretty run of the mill. My understanding is that there has been some owner and/or chef changes? I don't know. But, what I do know is that the four of us ordered a variety of dishes and everything was fantastic. I love the pork chop entree and others sampled from the rest of the menu. We had an initial snafu with the food, three of four dishes, where our meat dishes were undercooked. This happens, I know, and our server got right on it to remedy it. What was amazing was how quickly they redid our meals and how well they took care of us!! Well beyond the call of duty! The food was top notch and worth the wait and not one tinge of hesitation on how to best take care of us. Good service can be hard to find - so grateful for this experience. I came here with my wife's family while we were on an Alaskan cruise and got the recommendation from a dog sledder who lived in Juneau. My wife's family is definitely more of the fine dining types (I consider myself more a hole-in-the-wall type) and were all pretty impressed. From the small plates we had the Alaskan Rockfish tostadas, crispy calamari strips, King Salmon meatballs, and the scallop crudo. From the large plates, I got the Alaskan Halibut. I will say that I think their standouts from what we had and tasted were the calamari strips, which were really well fried and super tasty, as well as the King salmon, which my father in law had. I liked the halibut, but it wasn't necessarily the best meal I've ever had in my life. The Scallop crudo is fantastic as well. On another note, their bread was fantastic and freshly baked. The only thing that our group wasn't impressed with was the amount of crab on the king crab pasta. Definitely seems overstated at "1 lb. of crab." I would also agree that prices seem a bit inflated. Overall, if you're looking for a fine-dining establishment in Juneau, Salt is your place. read more

Your paying for the atmosphere and the environment. I would give this place 4.5 stars for that. But 3 stars for the food. I know it's Juneau, but having a fancy menu doesn't mean the good come out delicious. I ordered chicken and it was over cooked and dry. The suck breast feels under cooked and has been marinated for way too long that it tastes like deli meat. The cheese plate was okay except you can tell the prosciutto had been there for a while (you can always tell by the color). And other meats on the cheese plate taste exact like deli meat from Fred Meyers. It's got a good wine selection though. But I enjoyed the food from Zephyr (what Salt used to be) a lot more. read more

When we first walked in, from the outside, it looked like a very nice swanky fine dine restaurant. The interior is designed pretty nicely, with a touch of modern western set up, and dark espresso wood surrounding, and leather chairs and booths. The bar is set up like the design's taste to compliment the setting and compliment with a staircase to the upper level, and wine cooler fridge, near the entrance. Why 3 stars? I can't do 3.4, so, I'll stick with the 3, due to mostly of the service failure. I read the reviews online, and I definitely saw why other guests mentioned that they are not looking for improvements, nor changes, because of the constant cruise tour that brings them business! Pretty sad, to know if that's all that's keeping the business alive, rather than focusing on the opportunity of growing and maintaining the quality standard after. Anyway, my husband and I were having our dinner there, it was set up by our concierge at the place we're staying. The food menu looked really good and very appealing, but again, I took other Yelpers' suggestions to avoid on few of the food selections. So, I ordered the crab bisque for my appetizer, and my husband ordered the spinach salad, which both dishes tasted pretty good as a starter. I also had French 75 as my cocktail order, which isn't that bad also. Then came our main entry, which wasn't really all what we had expected. His steak was too well done for a medium, and my Farro Risotto wasn't all that delicious. The only thing I liked, was the cheese tuille sheet and the orange garnish. Our server, Erin, she didn't seemed very engaging, as we noticed, she was more engaging with the other Caucasian folks next to us. I requested for hot water, she never came with one, so I ended up asking from a busser, who brought hot water in a glass, rather than a cup. He realized how hot the glass he was holding, and I wasn't able to drink it out of the glass, as it is WAY too hot to lift the glass, to begin with! Genius much? Then came our meal, and Erin realized she had forgotten about the hot water until she saw the glass on the table. Only if she had paid attention to everyone equally, that little detail wouldn't be missed! She later came back to check, and my husband's steak was a bit well done, versus the medium, he was looking for. She didn't bother to put the sincerity into the mistake, rather she just lifts the plate, apologies, took off, and back after, to tell him the time frame for his next steak...and off she went. Each time she came to our neighbors' guests, she spent more than 3-5 minutes at their tables, while we only got a brief "hi & goodbye", type of treatment. I get that she may not like the culture interracial thing, but, as a former server myself...I prefer to see them as my customer with no preference in race or ethnic. Anyway, I am not going to ramble about that. It's expected to happen with us, at a lot of dining places we go to. Little do they know, how much we tip, for decent to a great service! In the end, after my husband got his correct cooked steak, he didn't even bother correcting their mistake again, and just ate the medium over and get it over with. I'm torn on this review. There were so many things wrong but then single shinning star. The crab bisque we all agreed was the best bisque ever tasted. Now for the bad. Where to start, Service or main course. We all three ordered halibut. Let me put it this way, the veggies were amazing and presentation nice. The halibut, we could have bounced it on the floor like a basketball. Mine in particular didn't fast fresh. I really wanted King Salmon, no delivery today. To bad, maybe that would have been better. Now the service. All three of us had in the past waited tables ourselves. We agreed it would have been difficult to try and be as bad as the staff this evening. The hostess was helpful and charming. The waiter was on point in the beginning up until we gave an polite honest opinion on how tough the halibut was. It was all down hill from there. He just disappeared. We all needed more beer and drinks. Didn't stop back. No offer to compensate for the Halibut we left on the plate. We were fed up at that point and wanted to leave. Couldn't get the check. Waived down the cute hard working brunette waitress. Then the check arrived minutes latter. It was we believe for the kitchen an off night. On the last night of our Alaska trip (05/25/15), wearing hiking boots and backpack, We walked into this well-furnished place after a four-hour Mendenhall ice cave hike, which made this meal even more rewarding. For starters, we ordered the fried calamari strips and the king crab salad, both were very refreshing. The calamari was exceptionally juicy, arguably the best we've ever had. The king crab salad was freshly seasoned and had a wonderful presentation. For main courses, we ordered the filet mignon and rib eye and both were very tender and perfectly executed, especially the rib eye. BC went as far as saying it's the best rib eye he's ever had. Overall, we are extremely impressed with SALT. After days of waxy baked salmon and mediocre fried fish strips, SALT was such a pleasant and refreshing discovery. It is a precious gem hidden in the touristy downtown area of Juneau. We will definitely come back for more next time. ~$70 per person, which isn't bad at all considering everything is more expensive in AK. read more

Bad experience. Food pretty good (salmon way too salty) but overall not bad. Not worth the price, however. The experience was bad for many reasons. First, they didn't have any of the first choices for everyone in my three person party. I wanted halibut, another wanted halibut, another wanted the quinoa salad, all gone. The waitress told us the cooks dropped the halibut on the floor and wasted it all. Big mess supposedly. So by chance we all ended up ordering salmon instead. 25 mins later manager comes out and tells us only two of us can have salmon so another orders filet cooked at medium. Wait another 45 minutes and we get the food. The salmon is good at first bite but quickly we realize it is so salty. To wait that long and be disappointed still with the food was the final blow. The filet is great but far too rare in the middle. Our waitress was never seen again until the check and we didn't even fight it. Personally, if I was paying I would've got it free bc it was a disgrace of service and did not warrant any type of payment for waiting an 1:30 of changing back and forth and being told food is not available. Obviously, I won't be back. On a different night for a different table I imagine it's okay, but not worth the risk, price nor mediocre taste. Spend money elsewhere. read more

Ate dinner here solo tonight sitting at the bar. Staff was very friendly and attentive to my needs. Had a couple of great craft beers to start. Great selection. I had a delicious dinner here the last time I was in Juneau. I believe I had the Salt burger and fries, and they were both cooked perfectly. My friend ordered the Alaskan halibut and she was also quite pleased! The interior is lovely and cozy, it was perfect for a quiet dinner conversation. The food in Juneau... where to start? Well, the food in Juneau is bad. There. So after four days of crappy hotel and cafe food. I came to Salt with high hopes. The crab bisque was very tomatoey and way too thick. There were no lumps of crabmeat, instead little threads like leg meat, the kind you give your dog. Halibut was fresh but overcooked and oversalted. The leeks were too sweet, as if they had added sugar and the little radish/fennel salad needed acid. The plate was overall muted, salty, and tasted soggy, like a cloudy rainy day and not the good ones. A little lemon zest or juice on the salad would have provided the needed brightness. The mayo sauce (not aioli as it claims) was more of that muted blah on the plate. Overall, for the price this place anywhere else would fail. Here, I guess it is one of the best. Because of its pretentiousness, I will judge this place accordingly. read more

A perfect night out in Juneau. Classy with an amazing ambience. The music, lighting, and table settings combined to set the stage for the meal to follow. Most patrons were a little dressed up (by Alaska standards). The food was delicious; I ordered the fish special and my fiance had the ribeye steak. We loved both. The cocktails were lovely too, our group loved our manhattans and sazeracs. Highly recommended for a night out in Juneau. read more

Started with the cheese plate which was delicious. The cheeses, meats and bread were fantastic. Did not have any drinks so I can not comment on their drinks. Ordered the rib eye and it was heaven! The seasonings were perfect and it was cooked exactly how I love it. The mashed potatoes were phenomenal (and I don't like mashed potatoes at all). The waitstaff was very attentive and cordial. It was a bit of wait but it definitely worth the wait. I would visit again if I was ever back in Juneau. read more

I'd give 2.5 if I could, not as advertised? It said modern Alaska cuisine.........not even close Just another boring menu, way over priced.. bisque was good, beet salad boring, fried brussel sprouts also boring, asparagus side small and under seasoned, etc Cruise Ship mania has taken over Juneau. There all week......the only good seafood I had was king crab at Tracy's, and I know she runs this restaurant. read more
