Menu changes have been disappointing over the past several months. We've always enjoyed this restaurant and service is always very good, but what happened to the buratta salad? Since they opened there was a seasonal buratta salad (sun dried tomato pesto yum!) with each menu but it has disappeared over the past couple menu changes. And the steak sandwich is gone too which is unfortunate. Bring these faves back please and we'll return. read more

Meh. Not sure why all the 5-star reviews. If memory serves there are variations of tuna, salmon, and eel on the sushi menu. THAT'S IT PEOPLE! Sure, there are oysters and a few other dinner options, but it's like food truck selection with a nice retail location. Sat outside, inside was simple and relaxed. Our waitress, Ashley, was very quick with us. Odd for a Sunday dinner at 5PM. Wasn't crowded yet, and we were being rushed for some reason. Started with a salad, but Ashley couldn't remember the toppings or dressing options. Not one of the three. Said the menu changed the day before and she forgot. Understandable. Guess they were quick with the menu change since it was the same on Yelp photos 8/21 GULP! I had a Coke... or a Pepsi. Dang, these drinks were so tough. Guess that changed recently too. Ended up with two kids bento boxes, house salad, firecracker roll and spicy tuna roll. Sushi was a average at best. Selection was found wanting. Kids loved their meals. We're very fun with kids sushi of a rice crispy with Swedish Fish on top. Very clever! A bit overpriced for what you get, but high rent district explains that. This is everything you'd want in a restaurant. Great atmosphere, good service, good food options, good drink options. What a perfect addition to Scituate! And what a great replacement for .... Never mind what used to be in this space, I'd go back to Salt Society in a heartbeat. First, all the praises.... This restaurant opened up during a worldwide pandemic. That's gutsy. And gutsy seems to be how they do everything: space, food, drink, service. This space on Front Street near TKO's used to be the home of Oro and when Oro's owners see what Salt has done with the place, they're going to be kicking themselves. It's like the new owners have discovered a passageway through the wardrobe. Whereas Oro had a truncated bar (where it was notoriously difficult to get seats, and notoriously noisy, but also the only reliable dining experience), Salt/Society opened up the backside of the room and completed the square of the bar so that instead of ten or so seats on two sides of a small rectangle, Salt has a fully rectangular bar. They make full use of what turns out to be a surprisingly large space. It also mitigates the sound problem, or seems to. But bar dining isn't allowed under the covid restrictions, you say? No prob. Salt has jammed a few two-three tops up against the bar and sent a slew of talented bartenders to wait on you. It's not quite bar service but it's close. The space and colors are beautiful and comfortable. I've been to Oro about a thousand times and can say that the Salt/Society space feels fresh and original. They also have tables and other seating options around the inside perimeter of the restaurant which feels bigger with the renovation. But they're also serving on the sidewalk along Front Street -- maybe ten or fifteen tables? I didn't count but, dang, they're doing a good job with the space. (Clean unisex bathrooms, too!) (Free parking in the lot behind with a rear door to Salt/Society behind the Chinese carryout.) (All the employees wore masks but as with most things some wore them better than others.) They have a clever cocktail list. The tequilas and vodkas and gins look great. As a confirmed bourbon drinker, even I was tempted to deviate from my usual. But the bourbon with peaches was clever and good. The bee balm cocktail was great. Literally, the bee's knees! It's not on the menu, but if you ask, they'll serve you a near-perfect Basil Hayden Manhattan with Luxardo cherries! The food menu is extensive and interesting. Locals are thrilled with the sushi options. The spicy salmon roll was good -- it's hard to judge since there's no other reliable sushi around. The very good seafood chowder had a lot of pork-belly which was tasty and surprising. They serve the chowder with a cheddar biscuit and part of me wanted to stand up and cheer. It's so great to have a place that's not serving the same old thing. We also got the burrata salad, a true standout with lush tomatoes, crisp toasts, and fresh cheese. There are so many great options that I'd advise taking your time. Order whatever appeals and then come back two or ten times to work your way through the menus. Service was good all around: friendly, competent, frequent, professional. Everyone we talked to has worked in the industry elsewhere so there was no sense that it was anyone's first day on the job. No dirty dishes left to linger. Really, everything was great. My only ding is the social-spacing. We loved our table back between the sushi bar and the door to the kitchen but there's no way we were six feet from anybody. It was more like six inches. It felt great to be out again -- to have real cocktails and real service and great food options -- but I have this nagging feeling that perhaps we were a little too close. read more

The best restaurant in Scituate and one of the best on the south shore. Have been going here since it opened and thrilled to see the other area open up last summer for more seating. Please please please bring back some of the old summer favorites to the menu!!! The lobster roll was the best in the area, and we are so missing the steak sandwich being available for dinner. Above all else, please bring back the buratta with the berries and crostini to the menu. I think I ordered that once a week last summer and it's one of the best things you ever had on the menu. My wife and I saw them on Phantom Gourmet and after reading their menu online, decided to make a daytrip to check them out. The restored mill building it is located in is well-maintained but can be a little loud, but everyone dining there seemed happy. For appetizers, my wife ordered the grilled octopus, which we've had at other places before and love, but we didn't know it could be this tender. I had the steamed octopus special which was served with cucumbers over a light vinaigrette and was refreshing. For entrees, my wife had pan-seared halibut, cooked a perfect light brown color with duck-fat roasted fingerling potatoes, onion puree and beurre blanc, which she absolutely loved. I had the pan-roasted duck breast with cranberry and date compote, garlic and leek puree, mushrooms, and pickled gooseberries. I love duck and have had it many times, but this was the best i've ever had. The different components complimented and contrasted each other very well. For dessert, my wife enjoyed the honey cake with poached pear, cardamom, and creme anglaise. My deconstructed pumpkin pie elevated its different components very nicely. Our server Bianca was pleasant, professional, and helpfully answered any questions we had. Their menu changes with the seasons, so we want to go back when it does. read more

We love Salt Society. We live in town and have been coming for years. We love the servers and Brendan is fabulous behind the bar. Drinks are perfection and the staff is the best. Love the decor and running in to so many people we know. Food is amazing but the menu has undergone several big changes. We do miss seasonal, lighter and more casual menu items like the burrata (with the berries or a pesto). Made for a perfect summer dinner. The steak sandwich was a huge hit and we need a lobster roll! We used to come once a week and now it's more about once a month. The main menu is more limited ( sushi is phenomenal and great menu) and the prices are getting a bit too high for a family of 4 with older teenagers. My daughter loves a chicken Caesar salad, but it's $18 for the salad and the chicken breast is an additional $15. We love you Salt Society, but you have to bring back some of the old-time, easy favorites that made you so great. read more

My wife and I went to the Salt Society last night. We ordered sandwiches- Chicken and a Smashburger - I had a beer and she had a wine. The food was fair at best...The Chicken sandwich had some type of pesto sauce that was inedible. The Smashburger was too thick to eat by hand so it was eaten with a fork-tasted ok. There seemed like there were more waitstaff buzzing around than patrons. The service was good. So for 2 sandwiches a beer and a wine the bill was $59-with a $12 tip we walked out unsatisfied. We've tried to dine here several times without luck but finally got in last night. We showed up at 5pm and were quoted a 90 minute wait, so we put our names in and went down the street to have some drinks as the bar area was full. Of course, as soon as we received our drinks the restaurant called to say they had a table ready. The table was right next to the busy open kitchen and two members of our party had to sit on a low bench without any sort of backrest with a shelf piled high with dishes directly behind their heads. The restaurant should reconsider the layout of the table. The menu situation is a little odd too, there are four pages but the server handed them out separately to each of us as if each page was the same. It's easier just to look up the menu online. Also, be aware of how loud it gets in there especially as the night progresses. If you're dining with a group be prepared to shout across the table to be heard. I've heard a lot about their cocktail menu, and while I didn't have a cocktail those that did said it was good but not outstanding. They had some solid beer and wine options too. For starters we ordered the tuna bomb, Brussels sprouts, pork belly and oysters. They were out of they oysters (at 5pm), but the tuna bomb and Brussels sprouts were both very good. The pork belly unfortunately was the wrong texture. It was hard and chewy and required you saw at it with your knife to cut it - definitely not the melt in your mouth texture you expect. The appetizers came out quickly but that's when we lost our server. She didn't come back for about 30 minutes to check on drinks or take our order for entrees. It's possible they are short staffed, it was hard to tell. Three of us then ordered a Love Boat and one person got the fish and chips. While the Love Boat is supposed to be chefs selection, they were really accommodating to our request for the firecracker roll as the specialty roll. Almost everything in the Love Boat was fresh and delicious. The only exception being the shrimp tempura roll which was dry and lacking in flavor. I was told the fish and chips were tasty too but the portion size was really small. Overall, I'm glad we finally got to try this place. Options for good sushi are lacking on the south shore so I'm happy this place exists. There were some misses on the menu and combined with the hoops you have to jump through to get a table, the awkwardness of the seating and the loud volume level, I'm not sure whether it's worth dining there again- takeout may be the way to go from now on. read more

We had the Brussel sprouts for starts and they were good but, the amount you get isn't worth the $13 price tag. Love this place! First time there and I'm ready to go back. The wait staff was super nice and the cocktails are so fun and delish! If you're looking for some great craft cocktails this is the place. My husband got the steak sandwich which was really good and the bread it was in was great. I got the sushi which was really good too! The fish was fresh, avocado was great, and the sauce on it was perfect. Oh and the app! The Brussels were perfectly crispy. Only thing I'd say is it was a bit hot inside but that's really it. I'll start by saying the food and cocktails at Salt Society are top notch. The menu is inventive and well-executed. The cocktails are delightful. Their system for getting a table renders all if this obsolete, however. No reservations, and you can't call ahead to get on the list for a table. We call, they tell us there's a 30 min wait for a table, no we can't put our name on a list. We drive over in the snow (we're 3 minutes away, tops). Get there, hostess says it's now an hour. Took my number and name, told us they'd call, go wait in the car. So I have to drive there, so you can...write down my number and...call me when there's a table? We slogged through the snow to get back to the car, drove to Oro, had a lovely meal, and we're home by the time they texted us close to 2 hours later. I understand not taking reservations, but the rest of it borders on ridiculous. Their food is great. It would need to be the French Laundry for me to jump through these hoops. read more

What a let down. Went by several times when it first opened but always was too crowded. Finally had an afternoon free and headed for Front Street and got a table. Nice room, but windows were closed and it was warm and humid inside, no A/C , stuffy. No crowds today. The help outnumbered the guests 2 to 1. Waiter brought us a small glass of warm water, no ice. I'd read about the fishing boats next door selling to local merchants and families and figured I'd get fish & chips. They were out of fish at 2pm on a summer Friday afternoon. We both got $8 cups of chowder. While we waited, at least 15 minutes, the waiter brought us teaspoons which I found curious. But when the chowder finally arrived, I saw why. It's served in cup about the size of your grandmother's China tea cup. A soup spoon would empty it in three trips. My wife and I noticed that the chowder and the water were both served at room temperature. I asked for more water, with ice and instead he brought a bottle of room temperature tap water, no ice. Two parties of three came in after us, were seated, served and ready to go on their way before we got the mains. I had a steak sandwich (not bad) and the wife had scallops. (7 small ones for$19.) while we waited we tried to wave away three persistent flies without success. The fries I got with the sandwich were like the potato sticks you can buy in a can. Only the flies liked them so I let them have them. Very expensive ($67 for lunch for two including tip, no drinks) for the quality of food and service delivered. Will not be back. read more

For standard sushi rolls (spicy tuna, california, etc.) it is upwards of $15 for 8 pieces. The specialty rolls are $20, yet hardly anything that impressive. This was my second time at salt society and very disappointing! The first time I had gotten the tuna bomb, toro jalapeño, spicy salmon roll, and the firecracker roll. All of those were 10/10, amazing! This time around I had wanted to switch it up so I got the grilled chicken sandwich. It was maybe made with a pound of salt. I absolutely hated it with every bite. On top of that I asked for ketchup for the side, which resembled the taste of tomato paste and water from the Charles. I gave it a 2 only because the sushi was amazing and deserving of a 5, but I would've given the chicken sandwich a -1 if I could've. Just don't get it and stick to the sushi. read more
