It's been years since we've went out for New Year's Eve but this year we were driving our daughter to San Francisco, so we ended up having dinner at the Saltyard. The location is great with parking conveniently across the street. The place was packed! I am so glad we made a reservation. We were seated in a tiny table for 2 by the front door. I got hit with a gust of cold air every time it opened. My husband started with an old fashion. That's his drink of choice. He said it tasted just like the old fashion from Costco. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. For our appetizer, we order the calamari. It was ok. They served it with fried onion rings and pickled peppers. For our entrees my husband got the short ribs and I got the seafood linguine. I am lactose intolerant so they said they could make the linguine diary free. It was not. My husband's short ribs were also not short ribs. It was a different cut of meat, possible chuck roast. They also ran out of most of their desserts except for Cheesecake which i cannot eat. I ordered a Cioppino and Parmesan Truffle fries to go and was very dissatisfied with the quality. Cioppino: a lot of clams and mussels included were not even open. There were a total of 2 pieces of squid. Shrimp was rubbery and overcooked. Flavor of the soup was very lacking, and basically only tasted of oil and tomato. For the price, I was expecting a lot more. This dish is over $40 bucks, but is not even worth $10. I also asked for silverware, and they did not give me a spoon for the Cioppino. Parmesan Truffle Fries: they charge $3 more for Parmesan and truffle. Yet when I opened the fries there was barely any Parmesan on top. There was probably a total of 1 teaspoon of parm. Plus, the Parmesan tasted like the type you get as pizza toppings. There was also ZERO truffle flavor. Overall, huge waste of money. Will not be coming back. read more

First time here with my friend last night. We had kale salad, but there's hardly any dressing. My friend ordered the seafood linguine which is pretty decent. I had the lamb shank which is just ok. I had better lamb shank elsewhere. The meat is not as t near as I expected. The drink was average. The dessert is a disappointment. It didn't taste like crème brûlée, more like pudding. I made a reservation for 2:00 p.m. on Valentine's Day at Salt Yard in Burlingame. We arrived on time and were seated promptly, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the experience quickly went downhill due to the service. While I stepped away briefly to use the restroom, our server, Arbia, informed my wife that we had about 10 minutes to place our order because the kitchen would be closing for a Valentine's Day menu transition. This was surprising and frustrating, as there was no prior communication about this when I made the reservation. I received a confirmation text, but nothing indicating we would be on such a limited timeframe to order. Once we ordered, the service was very inattentive. We were given water initially, but there were no follow-ups. Our glasses sat empty for a while, and we had to flag down another staff member to request refills and assistance. When my ribeye was served, I was not provided a steak knife. I had to wait and rely on another staff member to address it, which took additional time. As a result, the steak sat and lost its optimal temperature, especially being cooked medium rare. By the time I was able to cut into it, it was no longer at its best, which took away from the overall dining experience. A steak should be served with the proper utensils from the start. After we asked another staff member for help, they had to notify our server to come back to the table. When Arbia finally came over, she refilled our water but spilled a noticeable amount on the table, did not acknowledge it, did not apologize, and made no effort to clean it up before walking away. At that point, it was clear we were not being properly attended to. Throughout the entire meal, there were no meaningful check-ins to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. It felt like we were overlooked rather than taken care of. The food itself was fine, but service is a major part of the dining experience--especially on an occasion like Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, this experience left us disappointed. This was our first time visiting, and based on this experience, it will likely be our last. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, as the service we received did not reflect the level of hospitality one would expect. read more

I was looking for a good dinner spot and was very pleasantly surprised by how great their Ribeye (49.99) Prime grade grilled rib eye steak, garlic-herb mashed potatoes, assorted mixed veggies, and homemade steak sauce was. Been here before for another family gathering and had a fabulous experience and wanted to try some other dishes this time around. Service was amazing as expected, love the mood and atmosphere of the place - intimate and lively. We had a great start with the Caesar salad, beef rolls, and meatballs-these are a must try. For entrees we had 2 ribeyes and 1 skirt steak. The skirt steak was delicious as we remembered. But both our ribeyes were very chewy halfway through. One us ate through it but had to spit out what could not be digested and all the grisly parts on the plate. I on the other hand had split my steak to get a piece of the skirt. I should have just ordered the skirt. Decided to leave my leftovers. If it weren't for the service ambiance and appetizers I wouldn't given 4 stars. Advice if you're gonna serve steak make sure the quality is the same for everything. Dessert was ok - warm chocolate cake with vanilla gelato and an order of espresso gelato. I tried Saltyard during a work lunch. It's a cute restaurant in Burlingame. We got the burrata (5/5) and crab cakes (4.5/5; mainly crab with a bit of filling and well seasoned) as appetizers. I had the Sea bass as my main meal and it was cooked well but it needed better seasoning and the sides were underwhelming. I was overall looking for more flavor and elegance from this dish. I also had the creme brulee (4/5; it was properly bruleed but could have used some fruit and maybe a touch more vanilla in the custard). The service was pretty good and the waiters made sure our drinks were full. All in all, it was a decent meal but I think you could get better for the price. read more

We made reservations, which turned out to be unnecessary since it wasn't too crowded, but we wanted to ensure we got a table outside for our dog. My mom and I each had a glass of wine, which I found reasonably priced. For starters, we were served warm focaccia bread with oil and balsamic vinegar. For an appetizer, we ordered calamari, which I thought was really tasty, especially with the added banana peppers on top. For our entrees, my mom chose the skirt steak while I went with the ribeye. The skirt steak had a lovely teriyaki flavor that balanced sweetness and saltiness. My ribeye was cooked perfectly medium rare, and the portion was huge. It came with a flavorful sauce on the side that complemented the ribeye nicely. The dish also included asparagus and potato wedges, which paired well with the steak. Everyone was friendly and prompt with our ordering and bringing food and drink out. We ordered a variety of drinks and food. The pomegranate martini was great and would recommend. It was well balanced and pretty. For appetizers we got the burrata and calamari. Both were delicious. I also tried the beet salad and sea bass/branzino for entree. The salad was great, wish there was a bit more goat cheese is all. The fish was cooked well and came with asparagus and potatoes. I enjoyed it all. The ribeye steak was ordered medium rare and was more medium when it came out. Still pretty good but would've been better if cooked as requested. We also tried the crème brûlée and sticky toffee pudding dessert. The sticky toffee was great with the ice cream and would get again. Decor is darkish, clubby vibe with an amazing bar. Service: prompt and fine. The waiter could have been a bit more personable but I know he was super busy. I had seen a lot of complaints about the service here but for our experience it was fine. Food: delicious! I had the skirt steak and I cleaned the plate! Hubby had the seafood linguine I think and loved it. Our friends had the salmon and the sea bass and they were quite happy. Drink wise, I had a glass of their Riesling that was very nice. Our first time. Really great customer service good food. My husband asked for a quiet table and so they put us on the terrace. Lovely night and the heat lamp added just enough warmth. We shared the carpaccio with arugula, left off the capers. I am not crazy about aioli, so a requested a side of the creamy horseradish sauce they had for another appetizer. BEST move ever! Added it and the squeeze of lemon it came with and it just was so delicious. I kept what was left I added it to my salmon, again really made a good dish better. My husband had the braised lamb shank. It was so tender and delicious; I took the bone it came on home. It came with a most delicious risotto with marscapone cheese and peas. Crème brûlée for dessert- they added orange to the glazed top. So yummy. The espresso was very good. We took a chicken and pasta dish home for our son. It was in a creamy mustard sauce that was delicious. Chicken was perfectly cooked. I added some steamed broccoli which went very well with the mustard sauce. That mustard sauce would also be great on the salmon. Very enjoyable evening. read more

My husband and I had been here several years ago and had fond memories of our experience. We returned with our son and were sorely disappointed with the attitude of the server. The restaurant was mostly empty when we walked in (without reservations). The server gave us a terrible table right in the middle of the hall which we asked to change. We asked whether they have half bottles of wine simply because we cannot finish an entire bottle and don't like to take leftover wine home, the server started showing us "inexpensive" wines on the menu which was strange. They got us house bread after our appetizers. We had come straight from school and our son would have very much appreciated some bread on time. The food itself was very good and the music as well. However at this price point I don't see the restaurant surviving for long at this location if they don't fix their service standards. read more

My sister and I had lunch around the holidays here because she was craving carpaccio. We shared the Parmesan Truffle Fries ($7.99), the Beet Salad ($12.99 - Beets with arugula, orange, roasted almonds, crumbled goat cheese and grainy mustard dressing) and the Carpaccio ($14.99 - paper thin sliced filet mignon with red onion, capers, Parmesan cheese, arugula, mustard, caper aioli + lemon). The food was okay but wasn't particularly spectacular. For some reason the color of the carpaccio reminded me of raw pork instead of beef, so I felt a bit weird eating it. The beet salad was pretty ordinary, nothing too special. Fries are fries, and you can't really go wrong with that! Overall this spot wasn't too memorable for me to want to come back. read more

Very Disappointing Birthday Dinner I've celebrated my birthday at Saltyard twice (in 2021 and again this past Friday for my 50th), and both times were a disappointment. Even though I called ahead and mentioned it was my birthday, there was no acknowledgment at all--no candle, no small gesture, nothing. Worse, the service felt rushed. The staff kept coming by to clear plates while we were still eating, and at one point, my unfinished food was taken away without asking. This was especially frustrating since the restaurant wasn't even busy. For such an important milestone, the experience felt anything but special. Went to Saltyard a little after 6 PM on a Friday evening. It wasn't too, too busy which was great because I had an out of town guest and we needed to catch up. The service was great! Our server was attentive but not overly so. There was a champagne on the menu that they actually didn't have, so he came back with a suitable suggestion. We had the calamari to start with and it was a good way to start. Nice and crunchy with tartar and cocktail sauce. Then the entrees came. I will say that the portions were very good sized so you get good value for your money. This may be a problem for some, but the truffle mushroom ravioli didn't have a lot of truffle aroma to it. Oh it was there, but it was slight but I actually like it that way because it can be overpowering. I ordered the salmon, which normally comes with mashed potatoes and spinach. I asked if I could get a double order of spinach instead of the potatoes and that wasn't a problem. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned well. Met friends here for dinner, and everything about it was amazing. The host graciously seated us in a quiet corner, and we immediately noticed the unusually comfortable chairs. The bar is beautiful and the atmosphere creates just a lovely overall vibe. I had salmon, which was cooked perfectly and sat atop sublimely tasty mashed potatoes. My dinner companions enjoyed chicken (again, perfectly prepared) and possibly the largest skirt steak I've ever seen. The cocktails were on point, and the appetizers came quickly. Looks like a Mediterranean menu and concise drinks menu but solid wine options! It was a long week so opted for a barrel aged old-fashioned. Absolutely recommend and would order just for myself and not to share in the future :) -Burrata salad - standard but also good -Kale quinoa salad - definitely light on the quinoa, and we weren't fans of the Thai chili vinaigrette, but that might just be personal preference. Didn't seem to fit the theme either? Entree: -Lamb shank - my first time seeing this dish come de-boned. It was lamb and sauce over risotto. Unfortunately the risotto was more like plain rice, without much flavor, so it was a very one-note lamb dish. Wish there were more of the little dots of fruit puree. -Branzino - this looked really good and my friend literally cleaned the plate so I assume it tasted really good too. lamb shank was tender. the puree balanced out the savoriness of the meat. the risotto was cooked properly. overall a great dish. service was good, we had a party of 20 on a Sunday afternoon. parking can be tough on the weekends in Burlingame so plan accordingly (probably like 10-15 minutes before you arrive) good thing is that parking is pretty cheap. Came here for lunch with friends on our way to Filoli Gardens. The restaurant is cozy and classy with a beautiful large wood bar. Two of my friends shared the bolognese with meatballs and said they thought it was very good. Another friend just ordered the meatball appetizer plate, which was just a larger version of the meatballs in the pasta dish. One friend had a small bowl of the soup of the day as an appetizer. It was some kind of a lentil soup, and she liked it, but said it was a too large of a portion for an appetizer. I ordered the lunch special. I chose caesar salad and the chicken and shells pasta dish. Everything was really tasty and a good portion for $25. I just had iced tea with lunch, but two friends ordered the pomegranate martini and the other had the blood orange. They told me all the cocktails were really good. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. She was also very patient with a table full of boisterous and indecisive women who had lots of questions about everything. This place should definitely be on your list for lunch. There are plenty of options without being overwhelming, and everything that I saw coming out of the kitchen looked wonderful. read more

We went to Salt Yard to celebrate our anniversary and were really excited to try a new restaurant. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely rushed and disappointing. We had a reservation and were seated immediately, which was great, but within five seconds of sitting down, our waiter came over asking if we knew what we wanted. We politely said we needed more time. He returned about one minute later asking again. From that moment on, it felt like we were being hurried out the door. We ordered two appetizers. About one minute after the first appetizer arrived, we were asked what entrée we wanted. We said we still needed time and ordered a second appetizer instead. Then, almost immediately after that came out, we were asked again about entrées. The constant interruptions made it impossible to relax or enjoy the evening. What really crossed the line was when they dropped the check before we had even finished our first drinks, without ever asking if we wanted another round. I had to say, kindly, that we weren't finished and would like another drink. The check was taken back, but then 30 seconds after my second drink arrived, the check was dropped again while my fiancé was still on her first drink. The entire visit lasted just over an hour, and the message was very clear: they wanted us out. For an anniversary dinner, that felt awful and unwelcoming. The space itself is pretty, but the service completely ruined the experience. Dining out should feel relaxed and enjoyable, not like you're on a timer. We won't be returning. read more
