This review is for the Pizza primarily. Although this is a very good spot for most Italian food, I would say it is one of the best pizza spots in the area. Your pizzas are fantastic. Not sure why they don't get more praise for this, but I think it's stellar. A standout would be their Italian beef and Jairo pizza. Don't miss trying this one. All the other Pizza types are very good and have a variety of doughs that you could choose from as well. Very nice family runs his place and the interior is really spectacular. Come here for a few drinks and a pizza or two. It's definitely worth the drive to Seek this place out. read more

Was so thrilled with this restaurant! We stopped by off of a recommendation and it did not disappoint. Family owned and operated. Everyone there was family and I absolutely love that. I live nearby and a few people I know recommended this many years ago. They closed during Covid and recently re-opened-only on weekends after being closed even years after Covid. My bf wanted to take me there for dinner. I like Italian so I was excited. We got there on a Friday night at 6:30 and the place was almost empty. There was a total staff of 3 people other than whoever was cooking. It took over 10 minutes to be seated d in the kitchen. It took over 10 minutes to get seated and the empty restaurant. Once seated, it took another 10 minutes for someone to come by the table. We ordered everything at once because we had a feeling that it was gonna take forever. And it did. We ordered an appetizer sampler of three items calamari,bruschetta and stuffed mushrooms. The calamari was clearly frozen. The bruschetta was made with CANNED TOMATOES!!! I asked the he waitress if they were canned and she couldn't tell me. They were- and it was gross. The Mariana sauce is sub-par. Way over garlicky to the point it was coming out my pores hours later. The chicken Marsala was just weird. The chicken had an odd rubbery texture. The noodles were horrible as well. Thick, no egg apparently and soggy. While "fresh" mushrooms were used, they seemed old, and left a funky taste in my mouth. ****They have carpet***** So, if that freaks you out like it does me, don't go. Doing you a favor - do not eat here. My aunt wanted to come because she used to go here many years ago and loved it. We came a couple of weeks ago and the place was empty. Between salad, rolls, pastas - nothing was remotely good. Even the rootbeer I ordered was not a rootbeer - not sure what it actually was. Asked the waitress several questions about what to get and got barely anything back from her. She did say spaghetti and meatball dish was worth trying. I took one bite and we left. Needed to go through a drive thru on the way home. Never even a question from the waitress as to why we were leaving early without eating. Really a strange place. And all for $150 for 4 people... Had to get back one more time and the hours are extremely limited and the building is for sale. Get out here while you can. Owners present and still running a great staple of Lake County. Still making their famous salads and they are as good as ever. Dinners were lasagna and rotolo (best thing on menu). Plates, appetizer, drinks, tax and tip for under $100. Hard to find these days. Didn't want to cook and had a taste for Italian, we decided to go to Saluto's since we hadn't been in a while. As always the cocktails were very good. My wife had a melon martini, my son had some specialty cocktail, and I had a dirty martini. For entrees, my wife had the steak and rotolo, my son had a pepperoni pan pizza, and I had the lasagna. They have changed to serving individual salads instead of a big family bowl, but still tasty with their house green goddess dressing. Rolls were really good, too. All of us enjoyed our meals and had to take home what we couldn't finish. Service was great and we had a terrific time. Sure the prices have increased, but we can't expect the same prices from 30 years ago when we started patronizing this place when our server, Chris, was a high school friend of our niece. read more

First time here, new to the neighborhood. Interior was typical with front counter and dinning area. The place was not very full, and we had to wait for the hostess to seat us, and 3 different people came and said she would be right with us. She was not very welcoming. Or waiter chris was new but super friendly, accommodating, and had a good sense of humor. We came to try the homade pasta . I had the garlic alfredo with fetechinni. The sauce was ok, the pasta was too thick and flourery which made the sauce flourery as well. He could have used more parm in the sauce, but it was garlicky. Came with house salad with house dressing, which was good. Also came with hot rolls, which we yummy just needed a little salt in the dough. There were no butter or seasonings on the table. The other dish we got was amatrciana, which was spicy Italian sauce with panchetta and onion on mostacolli. This past was better because it was extruded and the thickness controlled. Sauce was flavorful. The side for this dinner was the minestonni. Which was delicious with plenty of flavor and ingredients. The star of dinner was marinara on a meatball side. The balls were a little dry, but the sauce was outstanding. We had a bottle of chianti, which was reasonably priced but a little warm temperature. The total bill was about 100 without tip, not a bad value. We did not try the pizza but may in the future. read more

Veal scallopini came out as Veal Parmigiano with red sauce and mozzarella. Spoke to owner, she says scallopini is the cut of meat 1/2 order of Calamari, 2 glasses of wine, side salad and bowl of soup, with 2 rolls a hundred bucks plus tip. The rolls are excellent, salad dressing excellent, and pizza very good. The decor is very nice as well. Like an old school Italian Restaurant, updated and classy. My martini was made with Birch vodka. It was huge and smooth. My wife had a mai tai made with Birch rum. All of the profits from those two spirits go to help restaurants that suffered during the covid lockdowns. We bought a bottle of each on our way out as well as a bottle of the salad dressing. The mai tai was very large and tasty. We took the grandchildren with us who had very reasonable priced children's dinners. They keep asking when we can go back! read more

I'm shocked I just spent near $90 on a meal with two pasta trays and still ended up cooking in an attempt to fix this meal. I did have a bad feeling when we picked up the order and it felt lukewarm, like it hadn't been heated sufficiently considering we picked it up on the dot 20 minutes after ordering. The spaghetti with meat sauce tastes and looks like cafeteria food but at least it tastes somewhat acceptable? I guess if you like jail food - this is a disgrace to Italian! No flavor! The sauce is dry and caked on top in a way I've never seen before - if you threw it at the wall it'd probably stick. The second tray, supposedly the "vodka sauce" with fettuccine noodles is disgusting. According to the owner these are "homemade" - that probably IS true considering they're so misshapen and pasty in texture - when you pick up an individual noodle it starts breaking apart like there's too much flour in it. Then the whole mess is topped with a watered down "vodka sauce", again almost tasteless. Each of these trays is a shallow half pan by the way for $31 and the owner suggests, "I guess it depends on how much you eat" if it'll be enough for supposedly "4-6 people". Do NOT plan for this feeding 6 people, that's laughable at best. Ah! And the $25 family salad and rolls consists of ALL iceberg lettuce with a tomato and half onion cut up - as I stated to the owner, you should know very well that's a ripoff and suggested throwing in romaine to make it have SOME value. Too bad this place wasn't taken out by COVID while decent restaurants were forced to shut down - horrible! Update: Now at home and having to now fix dinner - I've removed the thick and dry spaghetti sauce which can be seen in the second photo - now inspecting it, it's almost as if they almost entirely used tomato paste to make this with how dry the texture is, then they added a half bottle of oregano and they call this "Italian food" - it's an abomination is what it is. The other, the "vodka sauce" fettuccine nightmare, my mom helped remove, heat up in a pan and fixed it up enough to where shes willing to eat it? As she states as well, you can't fix how bad the noodles are, the texture alone is nauseating. Comments at the table: "it's like they're gnocchi noodles", "definitely overpriced", "maybe they fired the good cook" and "maybe after 30 years the guy is ready to retire the business". For any families out there, PLEASE, if you're considering this place, look anywhere else or honestly, save yourself the trouble and open up a jar of sauce and cook some box noodles because that's what I wish I would've done now. Now I'm out of $86, my time and the ingredients used to fix up the cafeteria food. I wish I had looked at the Yelp reviews because the Google reviews seem absurdly inflated for this type of scam they have going. If I can prevent one person or family from wasting their money as I did, that would suffice. read more

We went to dinner here on 11/17/2023 and brought another couple who have never been to Salutos before. Our experience was very good. The service, food quality, and prices were very good. Our waitress was so busy and never forgot about us and always checked back in with our table. Loved seeing Bob and Mel - the restaurant was almost back to pre COVID capacity and things seemed to flow wonderfully. Thank you for a nice local Friday evening out. read more

Let me just get up on my soapbox for a minute and put Salutos in Gurnee on blast. Years ago, Jim and I stopped frequenting this restaurant due to their rude owners and the fact that they overcharged us an additional plate fee for allowing a 2 year old to eat a bit of our food. The owner argued with us about the fee and insisted on charging us and did so in front of other customers. Fast foward many years later to me going in for refillable soup and salad. I had one small salad and one small bowl of soup(not larger than a cup). I asked for another serving of salad and when i couldn't finish it, i was told I was not allowed a to go box for my leftovers. The owner came to my table and chastised me for wanting to take my leftover salad home and called me rude. My bill for the soup, salad and pop came to $20. Absolutely ridiculous. This was by far the worst pasta I have ever eaten. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo and the noodles were so thick, dry, bland, cold and inedible that I actually did NOT eat it. They wanted the lunch portion as they were not that hungry and lunch was said several times while they ordered but we were charged the dinner rate for his entree. You know the saying "looks may be deceiving"? Well, I think that applies to this establishment. When you first walk in, it has a very nice clean feel. We were seated right away (7pm on a Friday night, not bad, or maybe that was our sign of what followed.) Drinks were good... minestrone soup and fresh rolls, both were very good! Fresh rolls and unlimited salad or soup! This is a nice perk! And then the main course... seemed to fall apart after that! My boyfriend ordered Fettuccine Alfredo. The noodles for starters looked like they sat in water for an hour. They were mushy, and more like a potato consistency rather than noodles. The sauce tasted "ok", but it was way too thick and looked like it came out of a store bought jar. I settled for the lasagna which was also just ok, and again the noodles were as if they sat in water way too long. I wanted something else but they were unable to take out 1 ingredient (ham - ham can be very overpowering and they should have the option to either add/remove it - I feel ham in some dishes can really overpower the flavors of everything else!!!) After asking a few questions I came to the conclusion that the majority of their dishes are pre-made and cannot be made to order. Personally, this is a BIG turn off for me... especially when they charge over $20 for nearly everything on the menu - or at least offer the specialty dishes as a vegetarian option. I honestly didn't think it was any better than Olive Garden... and more expensive! Not impressed... Once we got our meals, it was a good 20 minutes (if not longer) before the server came back to our table. While we both originally wanted another cocktail by the time she came back we were annoyed by the food and the wait and wanted to leave. So all in all, a not so good experience and probably will not return... at least not any time soon. I do hope they step up their game a little, cater more to the customers by giving a more personal touch. If they do that they definitely have potential to do better. read more

After salting, it was good but not something I'd go out of my way for. The other problem was that it was extremely overpriced. $17 for rolls and salads (that should be free) for two people and a four year old. Also -- price on receipt was different than menu. Also charged me $2 for club soda. $50+ (including tip) for two and a child for pizza, water, salad, and rolls is about $20 more than it should be. Sadly we won't return. read more

This meal was the most disgusting Italian Dinner I have had in my life. My friend said the same thing! Who ever the cook is at Saluto's needs to go find another job. Veal Parmigiana??? They used someone's Shoe Sole for the Veal. I've eaten Veal Parm where you can cut it with your fork. This wouldn't cut with a knife, nor a steak knife. Horrible! The noodles that were supposed to be mostaccioli tasted like they weren't even cooked in boiling water. Oh yeah I sent it back and got Lasagna instead. It wasn't that great either. Olive Garden is better!! Friends Italian Sausage was tough, not quite as tough as my Sole of Shoe Parmigiana. I will never, ever go to Saluto's again.
