I go here relatively often for lunch because it's close to where I work. The food is comparable to other sushi restaurants in the area, as is the price, but the atmosphere is much nicer. I ordered some plain sushi rolls and fried calamari. My first time eating here, I had it delivered with a $3.00 fee and 45 minute wait. For what I got and what I paid for, I was very disappointed because this was my birthday dinner. I was pleased the calamari was real, but it could have been washed more before breading. But what surprised me the most was how the sushi was greasier and oilier than the fried calamari!!! It has left a bad taste in my mouth in more ways than one and wishing I'd just spent the $30 on something with larger portions and more enjoyable. I know of other good sushi places around, but I MUST MENTION THE HOT AND SOUR SOUP at Samurai! The broth is spicy with a tangy pineapple flavor, and contains clams, scallops, and shrimp. Samurai is dangerously close to where I work! I grew up right down the street from this restaurant so we frequented it when it first opened. I wasn't into sushi yet (I can't believe I missed out all those years!) so I would order something like a fiery udon noodle dish with chicken. It was always fabulous. I have to admit after moving a whopping few miles away, I forgot about ol' Samurai. My loss. We went there for Father's Day dinner and ordered a feast. I tasted a little bit of everyone's meal and everything was spectacular. As for me I ordered a chicken entree as I had just eaten sushi two nights before at another restaurant. I changed it up a little from my usual spicy dish and had chicken with peanut sauce. I was not disappointed. The chicken was cooked perfectly- nice and tender, not overdone at all. The peanut sauce was creamy and flavorful and generously poured on the chicken and vegetables. The veggies were cooked perfectly as well. Crispy where the should be, tender where they should be. We had plenty leftover to take home and the prices were comparable to other similar restaurants in the area. Service was great and we walked away very happy. Love coming here. I been coming here for a good 4 years with my family. Its a tradition for my family and I to come here everytime we come to Buffalo since my brother schooled here. The sushi is great and prices are fair! Lorie is honestly the sweetest person ever. She remembers us everytime we come here. And we only come once in a few months. We visited Samurai Buffalo for the first time today for lunch. We sat at a booth and my husband ordered the Hibachi Chicken lunch ($9.95), and I got the 2-roll lunch special ($6.95) with two versions of veggie sushi. Both meals came with soup or salad. He got salad (very nice, fresh greens and cucumbers, delicious dressing) and I got the miso. Our salad and soup came out relatively quickly. Our meals though took much, much longer. We arrived at 12:35, ordered by 12:40, and did not receive our hibachi and rolls until 1:18 (almost a 40 minute wait for simple lunch food - another table seated at the same time as us ate their entire meals, paid, and left before we even got our food!). He liked his chicken fine (said the pieces were bigger & tougher than he's used to, but the taste was good, and he really liked the fried rice) but I was pretty disappointed in my rolls. They were small, sloppily rolled (most of the pieces came apart as I picked them up, and the rice was just clumped on), and the chunks of cucumber inside were very big, making each bite of that roll very crunchy. I couldn't help comparing to Kumo on Transit in Depew and I *far* prefer the veggie sushi I get there - it's rolled better, presented better, and tastes better. It's very unlikely we'll ever return to Samurai. read more

I really like this place now. I've been hearing from people about the awesome Bento boxes. So, I went to try and see how it is. I ordered the Salmon Bento. It was HUGE. The Bento is served with variety of dishes which include a big tempura shrimp, six pieces of tekka maki (small tuna roll), and shrimp dumplings. They were very generous with the bento. Terrible. We ordered take out sushi. We waited 20 minutes to leave, a half hour to get there, and waited over a half hour after they said it was "almost done". The waitress avoided us while we waited and then only offered a free drink. Pop and water don't cut it. Then after getting home, all 5 rolls we ordered were mushy and they spilled sauce all over the inside of the bag. All the rolls were gross. Worst sushi I've ever had. Waste of time and money. Let me start off by saying I wish I could give this NO STARS! We had reservations for Friday night at 7:30pm for 8 people at the hibachi. 4 of the people arrived 15 minutes early, when we showed up at 7:30, they had not been greeted by a server, and had no drinks. Once we were all there, it took a good 10 more minutes before your "waitress" came over to get our drink order. This was the slowest service I have ever had. Oh, and by the way, the hibachi table that we sat around was dirty! there was old food every where, underneath our plates, on our chairs, all over the floor. Once we received our drinks, she (our "waitress" who never told us her name) took our orders. 3 of us ordered sushi rolls as an app, before our hibachi entree. 3 of us received our salads, the other 4 did not receive their salads until after we were finished with our salads. Then the hibachi grill cook came over to start the show. I asked him if we were supposed to get our app's and soup before he started cooking our food? I don't think anyone (employee's) there knew what the hell was going on. Finally 1 roll came out and she put it on my husbands plate, so I assumed it was ours? She didn't say the name of what roll it was. About 5 minutes later she brought out the other rolls, and come to find out, she messed up the roll order and we ate the wrong roll. When I asked her about this, she got very defensive and gave me attitude about it. Meanwhile, people at our table had asked for water and refills on their soda, which she forgot about until we had to mention it to her, and then again she gave attitude and brought over 1 glass of water with no straw or ice, when we asked for 3 waters. The entrees...Meh. We all agreed that Kyoto does a much better job and tastes much better. The shrimp was over cooked and dried out and the scallops were so over cooked you could bounce them off the floor. All I can say, is that the "waitress" ruined our whole experience, she was so rude! The 8 of us will NEVER return. Why go back to a dirty, rude not so good food restaurant? We will stick with Kyoto instead. read more

I've been here so many times for sushi in the past two years, I can't even count. The service is typically quick, friendly and efficient. But the service my friend experienced for his birthday tonight was unacceptable. He made a hibachi reservation for 12 people for 7pm. The restaurant was packed when we got in, which is expected for a Saturday night, but upon arriving there was no hostess in sight for 40 minutes. I felt bad for the servers because they were running around trying to get their jobs done, and being as nice as they could but since we couldn't be seated, all 12 of us, as well as 3 other couples that entered, were standing in the tiny postage stamp waiting area in the waitress' way because there was nowhere else to go, and they looked annoyed about it when they would try to cut through. It's like, "oh, I'm sorry our party of 12 with a reservation is in your way for 40 extra minutes that we didn't account for because your dinner service is running super late." We finally get seated, and are brought menus but it took a waitress probably 20 extra minutes to bring the drinks we ordered, let alone take our food order. Not that our order mattered anyway as they only had one hibachi chef working on a busy Saturday night... It was probably 45 minutes after that when the chef finally came to our table and started on our orders. In the meantime, our soups and salads weren't brought over until he was ready to serve us! So we waited all that time without food and then basically got all of it at once. On top of that, when they brought our salads, we waited 10 minutes and had to search FOR our waitress, who was nowhere to be seen, in order to get forks. My friend was so thirsty and needing a refill on her WATER that she gave the benefit of the doubt and went to go look for the waitress again, who she couldn't find, and saw a pitcher of ice water sitting unattended at the bar so she took it upon herself to bring it to our table. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because the food was consistently good as always, however the sad story is that service is something that definitely keeps people coming back. Not for anything but it's a good thing that I understand tips are supposed to be factored into servers' hourly wages because I still tipped. I wouldn't be surprised if some of my friends did not, since we experienced nothing short of barely present service from the moment we walked in. I'm really disappointed because I love the food here but I'm so hesitant to return after this. It's debatable whether the food is worth it or not. And I feel even worse for my friend who also loves Samurai so much that he had his birthday here and sadly experienced this service tonight. I really hope this place gets it's crap together soon, otherwise I'm afraid even more loyal customers won't be returning. read more

This is a great little neighborhood place. The food is always fresh, and the new hibachi side is equally delicious. My only complaint was the wait time when we sat down for hibachi, as they seemed very understaffed. In my opinion though, it's the best hibachi in Buffalo. Fairly priced at 23-30 per person, the portions are enormous! Don't be shy about ordering the sushi! Besides sea bar and Kuni's, it's the best! read more

I appreciate simplicity when it comes to sushi. "Designer" rolls are fun to try but you end up spending $30 to try 2 rolls that you might not like. Try the spicy tuna roll. Nice selection of sushi - tried the special roll for the day, Christmas roll, and Treasure Island roll. The Christmas roll had a mix of spicy crunchy tuna, tuna, avocado, cucumber, jalapeno and sriacha. The Treasure Island roll had lobster, mango and avocado. Both had fresh ingredients and a good rice to fish ratio - I hate when sushi places substitute the fish portion with an excessive amount of rice. Rolls were wrapped tightly and we had no issues with them falling apart. Prices were typical, specialty rolls ran $10-$14 and maki rolls from $3-$6. read more

I was craving sushi and sake over Labor Day weekend. I decided we should venture somewhere new, and not our usual go-to sushi spot. So I went to my yelp app and typed in "sushi". After browsing through the list, we mutually settled on Samurai. We ended up sitting at the sushi bar, which I enjoyed. The other side of the restaurant (the bar area and hibachi tables) was pretty desolate. What we ordered: -Warm sake (not sure the name) 10 oz. -One Japanese beer -One glass of Pinot Noir -Four rolls: -Shrimp tempura -Spicy tuna -Spicy crab -Steak teriyaki We loved all of the rolls. Our favorites were the spicy tuna and spicy crab. Since we were sitting right at the sushi bar, the "cook/chef" (preparer? Not sure what the man making the food in a sushi restaurant is referred to) - but he handed us our rolls as he made them. It worked out really well; we enjoyed not receiving all 4 at the same time. He would also take a break and prepare to go orders in between; the timing was perfect! Our bill was $48 something, which we felt was reasonable for what we ordered. All of the rolls were around $4.50-5.00 each. Samurai is now in competition with our normal sushi spot (Kumo). Kumo will most likely win because its closer, but I now will consider venturing out to East Amherst for Samurai when we aren't on a time crunch! read more

Came here with a friend tonight. We didn't get sushi but instead we decided to get other food on the menu. We started off with drinks, I got a Saporo and she got plum wine bot of which were great. We then got our miso soup, edamame and vegetable tempura, so far so good! We were taking our time with the initial food so the owner came out and asked us if we wanted to hold off on the entres, which was very considerate. The entres came out shortly after the apatizers were done. I got the salmon teriyaki and my friend got stir fried vegetables. All the food wa great and the atmosphere was very relaxed. What I would consider one of Buffalo's better Sushi restaurants. The food is prepared with great care to details. The serving sizes of fish and other items are very generous compared to sushi restaurants I have been to in Tokyo. The ambiance is very relaxed and the servers are very friendly.
