Extremely Disappointing Experience - Definitely Not Worth the Hype or Price I had high hopes for Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey in Palm Springs, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a major letdown. This place felt like Ralph's sushi on steroids--confused, overpriced, and far from premium. First of all, they list themselves as a "$$" restaurant on OpenTable, but this is completely misleading. Prices were sky-high--this place should absolutely be marked $$$$ instead. For what we paid, I expected something close to NoBu quality. Spoiler: it was nowhere near. I've dined at NoBu Indian Wells with a party of six and spent about $500. At Sandfish, the tab was just as steep, but the quality didn't even come close. I ordered a wide variety of dishes--definitely not being cheap here. I wanted to try everything. Sadly, about half the food went untouched. The kids hated it, and the adults weren't fans either. To be fair, the sashimi was fresh--it wasn't old or fishy--but everything else was just... mid. Not bad enough to be spoiled, just bland and unimpressive. And at this price point, that's unacceptable. On top of all this, the service left a bad taste. Our server failed to mention that a 20% service charge for large parties was already added to the bill. Holy moly. This place has to be one of my top sushi places I have ever eaten. The restaurant has a beautiful patio, where we sat. it was not too hot because we went in the evening. The waiter was super nice and attentive. The top thing that we got was the wagyu roll. It was out of this world. It has a smokey flavor from the meat that was tender. The citrus from the salad and the roll was so delicious. The duck baos were okay they needed more sauce. The fish cheek was super tender and moist. The sauce with the fish cheek was great. The service was great, very attentive and the staff was really helpful with recommendations, water refills etc. the ambiance was great and the food was delicious. It was our anniversary so we were extremely happy with such nice attentive service. It was so good we decided to go again... and the service was NIGHT AND DAY. The service was really bad! Like, really bad. Our waiter only checked in on us once the entire time. The food came out really slowly like our last roll came out 40 min after we ordered. The worst part was that there were two different people filming their experience at the restaurant. One of the women had a giant and bright ring light that was really distracting the whole meal. The second woman was very overtly filming other people eating. I understand that this isn't necessarily the restaurants fault but I do think they have a responsibility toward the privacy of their other guests and asking the "influencers" to stop. I think despite the food being good, these things really detracted from the experience. I recommend going on a Monday or Tuesday when the restaurant isn't busy. read more

Full disclosure- we've eaten here before and I never reviewed it. Would have been 5 stars: excellent food, chill ambiance, good service - all of which would have merited the price point (it's expensive). Wait for the but here... we went back, and while the atmosphere and service were on point the food was so-so (above your local sushi joint but, well, a bit meh). There have been menu changes, adjustments to dishes we liked - not clear whether this is a change of chef, partly a bad night in the kitchen or a permanent slide. We did still really enjoy the tuna tostada (I think the best I've had) and.. weirdly, a chocolate brownie with green tea ice cream. But rolls we'd had before were missing flavor and needed soy/wasabi to add any kind of spark. Our debate was having had 2 great meals, and one meh do we give them another chance at this price point? My wife and I made a pact to spend time alone, once a month, to really focus on us. The way to my wife's heart is through food, especially sushi. Her favorite food since I've known her has always been sushi. The answer to everything? Sushi. We walked into a small and fancy restaurant with a few tables and a bar. They had a wall of alcohol which was quite impressive at the bar area. Our server was prompt explaining the menu and with water service. My wife and I had a fairly large lunch so our food orders were quite simple: octopus carpaccio, braised and grilled Spanish octopus, sandfish roll, venue roll, and steak wagyu. My wife also ordered the Feydis, an alcoholic drink with lychee liquor, to drink her work troubles away. It was almost close to perfect because while it was strong, the lychee flavor wasn't very noticeable. The octopi (octopuses?) were the first dishes to come flying out of the kitchen. The carpaccio was very thinly sliced raw octopus dressed lightly in a ponzu? sauce with micro greens. We wanted more! Luckily, the Spanish octopus was a very tender, grilled piece of seafood. The edamame hummus didn't really need to be there as it didn't add to the dish. It would have been better to have two pieces of the Spanish octopus instead. The sushi dishes were drowning in their garnishes. We couldn't really tell what the sushi was. For example, the best thing about the sandfish roll (spicy tuna, crab meat and avocado topped with lightly fried potato threads, spicy aioli, teriyaki sauce, micro greens, green onions and black truffle zest) was the potato threads. Was it really spicy tuna and crab meat? Couldn't taste it. Definitely come for the signature dishes. The sushi itself was dressed a bit too fancy for a sushi connoisseur. read more

This restaurant was highly recommended by multiple people and for good reason! Had a 10/10 experience when we visited. From the moment we arrived, the girl who sat us was friendly, funny and made us feel welcome. Our server was also wonderful and checked on us often (she was very quiet tho! Lol) I HIGHLY recommend the tuna tostada appetizer. After we finished them i remarked that i could easily come and order many of those as my entree, because they were SO good. We also got the sand fish and Scandinavian rolls...both highly recommended. The only dish we were lukewarm on was the zucchini blossom. Not sure why this place didn't get better reviews but I thought the food was excellent! The fish is super fresh and all the ingredients complimented the fish very nicely! We had the tuna tataki tacos which were tasty. After eating just 1 though it left me wanting more. Nice prep appetizer for our maki rolls. I had the venue maki and the hubs had the sandfish maki. The venue came out first and I was worried because I don't like caviar and it looked like they put caviar on top of the maki but the roe was mild and added only a nice hint of flavor to the roll. I thought it was so good but when my hubby's sandfish maki came out, that was soooooo yum!!! The fried onions on top... so so good! Then my hubby got the white chocolate raspberry dessert something or other. I don't white chocolate but this dessert was really good, not overly sweet and the raspberry puree had a fantastic tartness! The service was also excellent. Our server was attentive to filling our glasses of water well before they were empty. The food came out very quickly, not much wait time. The place is small but cozy and not too loud that you can't have a conversation. The one and only gripe I might have would be that our table had a wobble but really not that big a deal. To start we had some appetizers - gyoza and zucchini blossoms - both had amazing filling flavors, and the light crust on the both were perfect. Loved the contrast of creamy interior on the blossoms. Our Japanese whiskey tasting came out next. Our server kindly explained each one and lead us through our tastings. It was a fun experience, and afterward I chose my favorite to have made as an old fashion - so dang delicious! For our order, we went with the tuna sashimi and a few rolls. I don't remember all of their names, but the were each amazing! The attention to detail, and the way all of the fresh flavors came together, was so very appreciated. And as I flipped through the pages the menu was dirty. Food all over it! When you are spending this amount of money you expect things to be spot on.spotless! Review your menus and make sure they are clean before you hand them out! Food: again the prices of food and drinks have gone up. Cocktails on menu about 20 dollars. Speciality rolls are in the upper 20s. Most of the rolls have crab in them. When asked about the crab, only two of them had real crab. For this price, they should all contain real crab. We ordered a yellowtail roll and a speciality roll. The yellowtail role had barely any fish in it. Mostly rice. The speciality roll was good but could not taste the fish as it contained a lot of sauce. The roll was ok but not good enough for 28 dollars! And back to service: all our food was brought out at once. Both hot food and sushi came out at once. This is not proper service unless customer requested this. Taste-wise... nothing too outstanding but a few rolls were good/decent! Out of all the rolls, I recommend trying a few signature dishes like the Koko and Lollipop. Also, classics like the Spider Roll for those who don't eat raw fish. Most of the rolls included crab meat, tuna, or raw fish. Service was also good.
