i came here with my sister and brother and ordered the pork katsu curry. the katsu was alright, but it had lost a little bit of its crunch because of the curry. i liked the curry at first, but the flavor kind of lost its luster after i was about 1/3 of the way in. personally, it got a little too spicy, and the curry itself didn't have that umami flavor that i was expecting. i also tried some of my brother's oyako don, which was cooked and plated very nicely, in a traditional bento box shape. i loved the texture of the chicken and egg, but it was a bit flavorless in my opinion, which made it hard to eat with the rice (which is usually supposed to balance out the flavor so it's not overpowering). service was fine, nothing special, and the place was kind of dimly lit (a little too much). read more

MIND BLOWN. The quality and top notch service in Sapps is very tough to match. My husband and I LOVE sushi and we were blown away by the quality of the fish here. What a difference from what we've experienced anywhere else. I highly recommend this restaurant. The higher than usual prices are not a bother when the quality is a match. Wow! Can't wait to be back. We had the gizzards and a special Japanese beef stick- the beef stick was recommended by the waiter as a speciality, and a specialty it was! Literally butter. Even their Kani salad was impressive (so much crab!!). I tried toro for the first time, and it was amazing. Finished off with my entree: Tonkotsu Ramen: WOW. Best broth I've had in my life. Delicious sushi in a hip spot. Went around 8pm on a Saturday night and was seated within 10 min. They don't take reservations. The sushi was great! The atmosphere was loud but good and the service was great! Price is also good for sushi in the city. The funny thing was that they played like full deep cuts of albums...we were there for over an hour and we only heard 50 cent and Eminem..like full album... Very odd. Sapps delivers! As in, the food and ambience is a great addition to LIC! (And I think they do deliver via the Internet.) Located in a desolate area of Long Island City, Sapps is a beautiful, hipster Japanese restaurant which serves rice and noodle dishes along with... Alcohol! I'm not sure if there's a happy hour, but from the looks of it, there seems to be tons of young and old people dressed up and casually enjoying their food. I always come here during dinner time. Never a wait-time for a small party, however, there are many customers at the bar enjoying a good chat and some alcohol while a big TV plays. The service is superb and moving. Dark and loud, Sapps is a great restaurant to relax and sit back with a friend or significant other. There are a lot of tables and seating and also a private upstairs area. Sushi chefs are working it at the back of the restaurant with urban art decorating the brick walls. The dishes the food is served in are beautiful ceramics, especially the bowl for the agedashi- which is an appetizer to order! I enjoyed my gyu-don here, although, yes, the price is hefty. It seems like most restaurants in LIC are just that, though. The ramen was ok and the chicken katsu is good, although can be said that it is a tad bit dry. But that's what the sauce is for!!! I appreciate the ambience and the food. Service is quick and accommodating, especially when we asked for an extra bowl to eat with. I would definitely return again when I crave gyu-don. I've yet to try the sushi. I don't recall any desserts, but there's nearby locations for that afterwards. Accepts card. Open decently late. Bon appetit! read more

When Sapps came roaring onto the LIC scene this past winter, it started off red hot with plenty of love. It helped fill a void of moderately priced sushi / Japanese in a hood where the only options were high end or downright mediocre. Owned by the same group behind SHI LIC (https://www.yelp.com/biz/shi-long-island-city), they've taken a unique space and turned it into a Japanese Izakaya-like operation. Having dined here a few times in the last few months, I can easily say I'm a fan. The space is quite unique, with an open floor filled with a mix of booths and tables and a mezzanine level intended for more concentrated groups or private gatherings. The staff seems like a mix of Japanese and other Asian peeps and all have been cordial and cheerful so far. In terms of the food, it's certainly not exclusive to traditional Izakaya offerings. Japanese wise, it's a bit all over the place with actual sushi and tempura / katsu style meats, along with ramen, don bowls, and seafood specialties. There are definitely elements of Asian fusion (see Wagyu Carpaccio, Tostitos Ceviche, etc.) and some very interesting creations (Sapps Pizza?). Rolls like "Robster" or "Medusa" may get a chuckle or two, but it's clear the appeal is for the gringo palate. That said, the food is solid to good for the most part. For what they're charging for the sushi, they may as well introduce an omakase depending on the quality of the fish. My chirashi bowl ($26) was nicely abundant with rice but the 12 count slices of fish were a bit on the smaller side. I opted for a Sushi for 2 ($66) and the sushi looked better than it actually tasted. I enjoyed the Yakitori, especially the classic Chicken Skin ($3.50) and Pork Sausage ($3.50). The place is very much date friendly and on occasion they have live music / entertainment playing on the ground level side. The ambiance is intimate and makes for a nice spot for dish sharing and indulging a bit on what seems to be a cornucopia of Japanese variety. I'm hoping it breathes more life into the Court Square section of LIC and glad there are new options in the borough. read more

Came here the other day looking to grab a bite in LIC. I ended up getting the chicken katsu, it comes pretty mild in spice but there's a spice at the table that you can use to add more heat. The katsu was solid but wasn't anything special. Maybe there was a special/better dish on the menu that I didn't know about I will say that I was stunned at the service at Sapps. The waitresses were super attentive to our table, checking in frequently and topping off our waters. We live in the building next to Sapps and during the pandemic we probably ate at Sapps every night (we had a work dinner budget to spend). This place has consistent, fresh and delicious food. Came with 1 other adult plus 2 kids who are regulars and introduced me to this spot. Great cocktail menu - drinks at table next to us made me drool but I only wanted to keep it light with one drink tonight so didn't sample much. The kids had tonkatsu ramen, chicken yakitori and gyoza. The restaurant was grear with honoring requests for them (i.e. no veggies and no egg in the ramen) and provided a plastic cup with a lid for the younger one's water. I had the "graffiti" one cup sake - which is prepackaged and made in Japan. Delicious and not too sweet, but I may opt for a cocktail next time. The Sapps "pizza" is delicious! We (the adults) also each had a salad and shared the Robster and the Gantry rolls. Both really good but I expected more of a spicy flavor in the Gantry. The next table over had seaweed salad that made us jealous so we're getting that instead of the other salad next time. Note: Regular rolls aren't on the menu but can be ordered. I also want to try a few of the yakitori next time. For dessert we had the green tea creme brulee - strong matcha flavor, not as sweet as would be expected of a typical creme brulee - and the staff put a candle on the plate and sang happy birthday. The atmosphere in the restaurant, a dark and shaded environment, added to the experience as ambient noises from a moderately amount of customers makes the restaurant feel alive. The food tasted fresh and delicious, from my limited selection of choices, it was impeccable. The texture of the fish was starting to become soft and mushy and it was served too cold (not frozen by any means but not your usual sashimi temperature). The sushi and the small dishes are just average and the portions small, especially for the prices that they charge. The specials on lunch menu are expensive. Amazing weekday lunch specials! We got the bento boxes for just $16, one with pork katsu and one with teriyaki salmon. Both came with great portions of meat, plus salad, soup, rice, shumai, and Japanese fried chicken. The chicken was a great touch; most places only give you rice/soup/salad with bentos. It had been several months since I was here on Friday, 1/24/20 and the place was packed. Perhaps there are just more people living and working in the area and//or word of mouth has resulted in an uptick inn business. Anyway, the food was delicious as always. My friend and I shared the sushi & sashimi for two and enjoyed it immensely, particularly because of the white tuna. It was the creamiest sashimi we had ever tasted. Eel and shrimp were not part of the platter, so that's a note to a self for next time. If you can arrive between 5-7, be sure to take advantage of the happy hour drink specials, which are available at the tables, not just at the bar. I am glad this restaurant is super close to my place. They have a great happy hour deal until 7 and you will be surprised by how big the drinks are! I got Sake Sangria and Hot sake during the happy hour and they were so huge haha. The drinks were pretty decent. This place would be definitely my favorite happy hour spot. The food is also good too. I got several Sushi rolls here and everything was very tasty. Their basic rolls are high quality and the specialty rolls are super delicious. Sapps is located in a great area as there are just a few other restaurants in its vicinity. We tried this place seeing all the great reviews, but were underwhelmed by our experience. When you first walk in, the bar is located directly to your left and you must walk past the bar to get to the seating area. We were not directed to a table and the hostess even walked away from us as we entered. We sat down and proceeded to order the Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box, the seasonal grilled fish, the avocado salad and the shrimp tempura roll. All the dishes were quite mediocre. My Salmon box came with Chicken Drumsticks that were pretty much bones with a little piece of meat at the end which didn't have the texture of meat. The gyoza that came with it also had the bottom burnt to crisp. The sashimi, cooking of the salmon and California roll was all just fine. My partner order the grilled fish which I came out smelling a little off. This smell deterred us for the rest of the meal as we were unable to enjoy our food. The salad was okay and the sushi had cold rice which I'm not a fan of. This place has so much potential and I'm hoping they can pick it up. Grade: B - read more

Food is consistently excellent and the outdoor patio section in the parking lot is amazing. My husband and I live nearby and it is a staple for our delivery and take out. Great vegetarian options! One time I ordered the yasai and it came with some bonito flakes on it (not vegetarian) and when I pointed this out they re-made my entire dish. *during coronavirus* Sapps opened up a huge outdoor dining area in the empty parking lot next to the restaurant. It can easily seat 15 socially distanced tables. They have drinks happy hour Mon-Fri till 7PM. We ordered the following: 1) hot sake - on happy hour is $5 2) karaage chicken $9 - great portion for an app. It didn't seem (heavily) breaded and had a red sauce. A bit different than the normal karaage, but tasty nonetheless. 3) tonkatsu ramen $16 - it had all of the makings of a ramen, but the soup was milky white with little flavor. I probably would skip this, as it felt like I was drinking hot milk paired with noodles. Also portion was a bit small for $16. 4) chirashi bowl $25 - pretty standard chirashi bowl with about 14 pieces. Not too special, seemed fresh enough. read more
