Pretty happy about their prices. I've had fresh sushi before but something about this place, it was better. The miso soup is great, some places get me sick. This miso soup didn't. The location is great for when you want to go there. If you order from them like I do sometimes when I am lazy they deliver extremely fast. The california rolls were really fresh. Also get the Salmon rolls, I highly recommend it. The price is decent, the location is decent. I've been here three times for dinner, no reservation & no wait upon arrival (lots of seating), but the service tends to be slow.. but the food is great so it's worth for me. On one occasion, the kitchen somehow lost our ticket for our food but the server was very apologetic about it and gave us free salad and miso soup as well as some sake. I've been looking for a good sushi place around the LIC area and unfortunately I'm still on the search. Tried this place because of the location and the decent reviews, sadly it was not the greatest. Ordered a few items: California rolls, salmon roll, tuna roll, avocado cucumber roll. Wanted to try different things. First off, the size of the sushi's were so small. They look much bigger on the pictures but in reality they're no wider than a quarter. The fact that 3 different types of rolls can fit in one small container that's smaller than 5x8 really says something. Second, the California roll was not good at all. They use artificial crab (which seems to be the trend around this area) which makes it have no flavor since they don't add anything to it. We ordered for pick up so I can't really rate the service but it seemed okay while we were there. Resturant is clean which is a positive and the prices weren't that bad. It's actually pretty big inside with bar seating, a first floor and a second floor! Ambience is nice and would recommend for a casual meal. Service was also pretty good - a bit too attentive. We ordered a ton of appetizers and entrees and I thought they were all pretty good. I prefer special rolls and they had a decent selection to choose from. The fish was pretty good but the roll with shrimp tempura just had too much outside batter (although added great contrast in texture with the crunch) so I wasn't really able to taste the fish. Also ordered some yakitori and takoyaki which I enjoyed. I wouldn't recommend the sukiyaki. It was primarily napa cabbage and other vegetables that was not worth the price. Otherwise, there's ramen, rice dishes and others that are probably a better choice! Good spot to enjoy a dinner with friends or a significant other. As a non-sushi eater, I was pleasantly surprised of how much I enjoyed the non-sushi options. Everything I had was for the first time and I'll definitely would come back to try others Gyu Don and it was such a unique taste. Absolutely love this place. It's LICs hidden gem. I happened to have found this place on Yelp while in the area and decided to stop in. It was pretty empty I had got there rather early in the day for lunch. Their drinks are good I can't remember the name of what I ordered but it was fruity and strong. Their rolls are well prepared very tasty, the bento box was great I had the salmon teriyaki it also comes with some fried chicken pieces and the classic stuff that comes in a bento box. Since everything else was good and delicious. I also decided to try out the fried cheesecake which was recommended by the waitress. Def try that fried cheesecake you won't be disappointed. Came here during Covid and was pleasantly surprised by how they set up their outdoor seating. They have somehow taken over a parking lot and set up a bunch of nice tables and chairs for people to sit in groups of 2 or 4. I think I saw one table of 6. The great thing about this place is that they have happy hour until 7, which I feel like was later than what their happy hour used to be before covid. $5 for beers and wines, and frozen cocktails are $10! Great deal. We had two of the frozen lychee martinis and woof, they are strong yet delicious! The staff is also doing a great job. They won't actually come over until you wave them down (to minimize interactions with the guests - and they said this upfront), and they provide you with a large container of water to start your meal. However, they are vigilant throughout the area and they were quick to clear our plates and come over when we waved them down. The food here is actually quite delicious. We had the crispy rice with spicy tuna. These are four cubes of rice that is deep fried with some delicious tuna on top. It was definitely my favorite thing here. We also got some gyoza which were pretty standard. We had a tuna loco also which was fresh and delicious. Overall, this place is awesome. The only negative that made them lose a point. For the price and the portions (for food, not drinks), I left a little hungry. There is also a weird paint smell coming from the auto shop next door I think, but it was only there for a few minutes. The ambiance is really chill. It's got like a hip vibe and a gastropub aesthetic. The food is good but not amazing. My boyfriend and I got the Gantry Roll, the Salmon Teriyaki, and the Chicken Katsu Curry. The Gantry Roll was EXCELLENT. I have no complaints there. However the salmon and chicken katsu were really really under-seasoned. They were cooked nicely, but they needed salt desperately, and I resorted dipping chunks of my salmon into soy sauce to get some more flavor in. My boyfriend's curry was the same and lacked seasoning. He liked his curry but it wasn't his favorite he's ever had. He uses it as a litmus test for every Japanese place he tries. We still liked it a lot though! Great vibes and atmosphere, and everything tasted good! It's just that for the price, I really wish the cooked food was seasoned better. Came here for lunch as I was visiting a buddy of mine in LIC with my gf. They have outdoor seating in a parking lot that belonged to what looked like a cab company, which was well spaced out for social distancing. My friend and my gf got the Tonkotsu Ramen, which was super white and creamy from first glance. This went for about $15, which is on the pricey side of things. The bowl is pretty deep I have to admit and it taste pretty good after trying a bite from my gf's. I got the Katsu Don as I wanted to try something new and be different. Turned out to be a mistake, but still satisfied my hunger. This came in a pretty cute box. It was honestly just a fried pork cutlet dipped in egg, which was then fried and put over white rice. Not really worth $13 for its simplicity. Service is pretty good! You can easily grab someone's attention whenever you need something. They're doing an awesome job practicing social distancing compared to a lot of other places in the city. Wouldn't mind coming back here again for lunch! Sapps has been a great addition to the neighborhood since it opened a few years ago, when food was really lacking in the area. The restaurant is big, dark, and loud, with a ton of outdoor seating options. Service is good. Takeout is always quick, and there are good lunch specials. I order takeout lunch specials from here all the time. The sushi here is always fresh, prepared well, with a really nice ratio of rice to fish. The lunch special is any three rolls (of a list) for $16, which is a good deal for the area. There are good happy hour specials as well. Some of the other dishes I've had are the vegetable gyoza, agedashi tofu, shumai, black cod miso, shishito peppers. I've enjoyed all of the items I've ordered from here. My friends and I were hanging out in LIC when we heard about a cool spot called @sapps_lic! We decided to get some Japanese food here and see what the vibe was like. When we came in, the aesthetics had such underground Japanese bar x modern hipster city vibes. I loved every bit of this place and I was immediately drawn to how cool it was inside. We learned that they also throw karaoke nights here and the place turns into a bar only after 9pm. For food, we ordered the Gyudon bowl, Pork Katsu, Rainbow roll and The Blast. Their gyudon bowl was very flavorful but it wasn't my favorite. The bottom half of the bowl was very soupy, the rice was sort of hard and overall the dish was just ok. The Katsu was though! It was lightly breaded and perfectly fried. The rolls were very standard, but taste great. The Blast was recommended by our server and we thoroughly enjoyed the punch of the spicy crab on the inside and the tuna/yellowtail on the outside. All in all, this is a nice spot to check out if you're nearby and looking for a solid local spot with good food, drinks and karaoke! My friend and I were in the area to play laser tag and just looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite before the game and decided on Sapps. We entered around 5 PM on a Sunday night and were seated right away. The restaurant was one big space with lots of street art as decoration and dim lights leading to a surprisingly good ambiance. Service was very fast, as soon as we were seated and given our menus they came by to give us our waters and take our orders. We decided to order and share: --BENTO BOX (with salmon teriyaki and katsu): Even though there was a lot of variety of items it was just a very small amount of each item. The taste of all of the items was very average; however, I do have to admit that the karaage was really flavorful and juicy. The mains of salmon teriyaki and katsu though were painfully average. --THUNDER DOME: My favorite item from all that we ordered. The sashimi worked well with the avocado and sauces. My only complaint, like with all of the other items is how small it was. --TUNA TATAKI: I think the flavor was good the only issue was the tuna was cut so thinly that I could barely taste it before it was digested. After we got our food and were able to enjoy it. We were hoping to relax for a little bit; however, it felt like the waiter was really rushing us. It just made the ending of the meal feel very stressful even though the restaurant wasn't even full at the time. All in all, an average meal. I love stopping by this place for a drink at the bar during happy hour (weekdays from 5-7pm) or over the weekend to watch a game on the big projector screen above the bar. Only problem is that they don't play the audio of the game on the speakers; video only. Either way, the food is great - delicious sushi and excellent hot appetizers - and they have a decent beer selection on tap. I had a couple Brooklyn Brewery IPAs but they also had Brooklyn Lager, your standard Japanese beers like Asahi and Sapporo, and a few others. There's restaurant seating in the back and up on a mezzanine floor in the rear as well. I'm very impressed by their fish quality - I've tried lots of places in the LIC/Astoria area and this one is one of the freshest. Some of my favorites: Chirashi bowl - Great variety of fish and very fresh Selfish roll - One of my favorite specialty rolls. Something about the smokey scallop with masago. Hits every time. Gyoza (2 pcs): Pan fried pork dumplings, cooked to perfection (nice crust on the bottom) and delicious. Kara-age (2 pcs) - Japanese style fried chicken shaped like a lollipop - pretty good! Not as good as Korean fried chicken, but still decent. California Roll (4 pcs): smallish in size but perfect for the Bento Box. Main Course: you get to pick 2 preferred entrees from a list....yes, 2 entrees!! I picked salmon teriyaki (perfectly cooked, tasty, and generous portion) and pork katsu ( good but I regret not picking the assorted tempura instead). White Rice: you get a whole bowl, but honestly, i just ate a little bit since the bento box had so much food! Next time, it would be fun to order a bunch of appetizers and drinks, and just chill. My friend and I ordered ended up ordering take out , we got the flash roll, the Medusa, and the Kani salad. The flash roll is delicious, the flavors just come together so well, it's definitely one to try. The Medusa roll was interesting. We wanted to try something new and realized this was not for us. This is a great spot in LIC! I love the vibe and it's easy to get a table. The sushi is reasonably priced and tasty. There is a lot of seating and the service is good. The cocktails are delicious, I had a spicy lemonade that was unique. We also got edamame and some more classic rolls like the Alaska, California and a spicy tuna.
