I usually make efforts to stop by whenever I'm in town to get my Gobi 65, poori, and mango juice. I adore the fried cauliflower. This past visit was incredibly crowded at around 2 pm on Sunday and the staff were overwhelmed. There were enough empty tables for everyone to be seated but it still took about 10 minutes. There were maybe 15 customers waiting. The paper wait list wasn't useful as there was no pen and there was no organized waiting in line so we were literally all standing disorganized trying to tell the waiter how many people in our party and you had to stand your ground. It also took a lot of effort to flag a waiter to order food. I'll probably try to come at off hours like usual next time. Food is consistently excellent, and based on the clientele, should be authentic. read more

I actually had an excellent experience here because I went at an off hour for dinner and the food was incredible. The one server that was running the floor was attentive and available (mind you, I was the only one). We had the mysore and regular masala dosa which were both crisp to perfection with the tastiest chutneys and sambar. 10/10. I had uthappam for the first time and chose the chili cheese option. It was phenomenal. Crisp caramelized bottom with a cheese pull on top. Like a South Indian pizza. The chilis def had a kick of spice. I would eat this again for sure! So delicious. We came here with a very large group of family members and were looking forward to a nice evening. Everything was all right, but needing improvement. While the staff were nice and friendly, the service was rather disorganized throughout the evening. The food took very long to come out, with some dishes coming out very very early and others coming out after some people had finished eating. Several requests also had to be repeated as staff admittedly forgot about them. I ordered the paneer butter masala and parotta. I could not eat the paneer due to how spicy it was, which surprised me. I asked for some yugort, but as mentioned, the staff forgot until we reminded them several minutes later. The parotta was nice and the mango juice was refreshing. I'm only giving it 2 stars because my mango lassi was good, and the dosa isn't terrible. But man - the service is horrendous and the ambiance is gross. I say this a lot, but for food that is trendy and popular right now (Indian), these owners need to do a better job of keeping their restaurants clean, serving properly and maintaining some level of understanding of the restaurant industry. Server/manager/greeter got our order but we never felt like he understood what we said. Turns out, we were right. Asked for coffee, no one brought it out. Bring food out so everyone can eat together- half our party just sat there with their food going cold because the others didn't get their food for 20 minutes. Finally, your food runner cant be the same person who just cleaned the table- its gross. The bathrooms are gross and it is super stuffy in there. Worst part? Decided to try out Saravanaa Bhavan on way back home. Place was packed, we had to wait due to that. Once we got our seats, we got the menu and ordered our food Wait time was terrible, we had to remind the staff that we ordered food and the food came in increments. My wife finished her dosa by the time I got my meal and she got her coffee after her meal was done. This was not acceptable. Also there were flies flying around. The food did not make things better - the following were ordered -Paneer Biriyani -Mushroom 65 -Plain Dosa -Coffee -Mango Lassi The paneer biriyani had no flavor The mushroom 65 had no dips And the worst thing about the entire experience is when we ask someone for our order , we had to ask for each one instead of all of it so the wait time was awful. I am from India, I eat Indian food at home almost every day and have been to multiple Indian food places such as Aga's, udipi cafe, Nirmanz - and have to say this is the worst Indian food place of all places I visited. Despite all the negative reviews, we decided to give this place a try and were pleasantly surprised. I question why this place has such poor rating. Some reviews mentioned cold food, slow service, or dirtiness, but we didn't experience any of that! In fact, the food came out hot, fast, and the entire restaurant was clean and modern looking. It started making me question whether or not competitors wrote fake negative reviews or perhaps the restaurant drastically improved over time. Whatever it may be, I recommend you come and give this place a try to see for yourself. Just know that they serve only vegetarian dishes (don't expect any butter chicken or tikka chicken masala). I had been here a couple years back and the food was good for our group of 16. Fiest this is a style of Indian food that is Vegetarian. It's spicy hot of you choose it that way. It's mild if you also choose that way. If you are expecting North Indian Food or meat dishes with Tofu or paneer substitute... It's not that. Decent option in the Sugarland area when I have dosa cravings. Dosas were okay, not bad. Rava masala and Mysore dosas are comparatively smaller in size than what several other restaurants offer. Dosa sides were refilled upon request. Chana batura was so crazy oily, they didn't let the excess oil drip out of the batura. Not ordering that again for sure. Also, tried their highly reviewed Madras coffee however, I dint find anything special about it. Coffee comes in a small sized cup. Ordered some fried rice and mango lassi for the kid, and that turned out really good. Light and fresh fried rice and nicely balanced mango lassi. This is a franchise and the food quality is nowhere near the original Sara anaa Bhavan restaurant. Crepes have become super thin, god knows why. The food comes out burnt. Happened to me 2 or 3 times. The food quantity has gone down for south indian dishes. Just overall not worth it when there are other better south-indian food joints in the city. Good option to try out to satisfy your masala dosa craving. This restaurant has a lot of different South Indian veg foods and varieties of masala dosas. I tried the Mysore Masala dosa which is a spicy rice crepe filled w potato mixture. It comes with your standard accoutrements including a tomato chutney, sambar and other cold white chutney which might have had coconut in it. It was pretty good although I wish it had a bigger portion of filling and that the filling was a little more firm. Service was dismal however and the food was very pricey. Took a while for our waiter to come to us and they were very unfriendly. Not sure if there was a language barrier but honesty it was confusing as the restaurant wasn't full and they were just standing there. My bill came to almost 17$ pretip that's including a small Madras coffee. Which brings me to...the waitress took away my Madras coffee (very good, small portion tho-less than 6 oz I would say) before I was even done w it!!! Like I had a quarter left. Annoying. We were also quickly given the bill without any questions asked about whether we were ordering anything else (which my friend and I were contemplating). The Paneeer Butter Masala was the best dish we had and will order this again. Channa Batura was also good. Parota was also good but if you order Paneer then you can skip this one. I've been to numerous Saravana Bhavan location's - this was my first visit to the relatively new Sugar Land location. The restaurant is new and clean. We ordered a combo plate with dosai, rava kitchidi, kesari (Indian sweet), poori and rava dosai. Everything was fine, nothing spectacular. The dosai comes with sambar and 3 chutneys. The sambar at Saravana Bhavan is consistently good and this location is no exception. The poori came with potato masala and kurma, both of which were good. Saravana Bhavan prices are high for what you get. IMO, the quality needs to be improved to justify the prices. Dinner was fine, and I'm sure I'll be back at some point, but I'm not in any hurry. read more

I haven't been back to this place in a while, but came with a coworker for lunch last week. I got the thali again with the poori. I would say 50% of the whole thali is really tasty, and 50% is ok. However, it's a big meal, and quite filling (if you could finish). I had some tasty curries and some that was just ok. I did like the poori, papard, and the yogurt a lot. I had ordered a coffee to go but forgot to get it before I leave, but the staff didn't even let me know. There is a variety of vegetarian items to try. The menu is quite long. I would recommend the thali if you like to try a variety of items. I also ordered to-go mushroom biryani for a co-worker, and my coworker asked me if I wanted to try some. I tasted some, and it was quite unique. I can't say I would order it, but it's different. For the price of the biryani, the quantity of the biryani to-go also seems quite small compared to other biryani places for to-go. read more
