Sausage Deli isn't bad, but I wouldn't say it's the best sandwich shop I've been to. I really like that it's located near campus, therefore they flaunt their Wildcat memorabilia, not to mention, they offer the Arizona Daily Wildcat for those of you that can't go a day without doing the crossword. They have a great lunch special; your choice of sandwich, Poore Brothers chips (I looove Kettle chips, they are my guilty pleasure), your choice of pasta side (they offer tons), and a drink. I usually get the Susie Sorority, it's made with Sara Lee bread, I could make the same thing at home...nothing to write home about, but it seems to be one of the local favorites. I have yet to try the Omar or Reuben, that is on my list for next time! read more

Speaking of cold ones, their beer here is fairly priced and they have a pretty decent selection. The staff is also super friendly. A long history of creative sandwiches with ample servings of meat not found at Baggins or Egees. Quality control of late has waned. One less star. On my last visit, the tomato and meat on our sandwichs were old and nasty and the artichoke salad was spoiled. No bueno! Since I visited on a Monday, I suspect that the food was left over from Saturday (instead of tossed) and then used Monday. They are closed (sadly) on Sunday. I stopped in here for the first time today, but for my second sandwich. The space is really nice, clean, and it looks like a fun place to have lunch or dinner with a group of friends. Both sandwiches I have had here have been meatball subs, and I have to say right out- I am not really a meatball sub fan in general. BUT these meatballs subs: holy cow. The meatballs are SO good, juicy, flavorful. The sauce is excellent, tangy and sweet, fresh. And my favorite part: they add mushrooms to the sub. I don't know if all meatball subs have mushrooms but it is definitely something other shops should make note of... :) The pickles that come with the sandwich are incredibly good dill pickles. Also the bread is so fresh and soft, but not soggy-- despite taking the sandwich to go the bread stood up to all the sauce and didn't have one soggy spot. The cheese is also thick and stretchy, and it's all exactly what you would want from a meatball sub. Whenever I'm craving for a good sandwich, this is one place that will not disappoint. Go for the lunch special with your sandwich, for under $2 more you'll get a small cup of salad, chips and drink. Grinder has been my choice lately, the sub is huge, can only finish it if I'm real hungry. Seating is very limited inside, most people take their orders to go so you can usually find a seat. A few picnic benches are available outside. Parking is no problem, big lot. Only open for lunch so grab an extra one and throw it in the fridge if you feel like eating some of their excellent sandwiches for dinner too! read more

Been to Sausage Deli more than I can possibly count. Sandwiches are pretty good and the price is decent. It is a definite place to visit if you are coming to Tucson and want to head to a regular joint that a lot of college students frequent. Favorites are the Italian Grinder, Bismark, and Susie Sorority. All three are good, but none of them spectacular. HOWEVER - when you get down to it, it's not great. I am not saying it is not worth the visit, but if you live in Tucson there are many better sandwich places. I go to Sausage Deli simply cause it is a good place to take out of town guests when they want to go to some "Tucson" places. The staff is really not that friendly and the owner himself could do more to be friendlier and act like he cares that you actually go to his restaurant. However many times you go he never really acts like you have been there before. First off, they dont have sausage as an option let alone even make it themselves! I ordered the Reuben, a classic sandwich. It was about the size of my one hand, and maybe only 5 ounces of meat, for about $9. Pathetic. The music was WAY too loud, and the latest pop garbage that the server, the blonde who is way too old to be listening to that garbage, was singing along with and dancing around like a child. I know, I know, this is my 3rd review for Sausage Deli but I have a good reason. We went to the old location one last time for subs. After years of eating nothing but the Grinder, we finally tried the Omar. What I've been missing! I can truthfully say the sub was just as good, maybe even a tiny bit better, than the famous Grinder. Their delicious Genoa salami paired perfectly with turkey, Swiss, mustard, sliced pepperoncinis, razor thin onions & bell peppers. Topped off with their delicious Italian dressing. I guess it proves the age old saying about trying new things! Now I have 2 subs to dream about and drool over! ETA: For those who like to support local restaurants, I consider a place that's been open in Tucson since 1978 to be a local institution. My husband was introduced to Sausage Deli while attending the U of A more years ago then he'll let me write.
