A Chicago gem in NYC ! The iced military latte is so good and I love the fun warehouse-y ambiance. The cafe is located in Au Cheval, and i think if you're dining at Au Cheval you can even order Sawada to your table? Coffee + burgers sounds like a fun combo to try next time ! read more

Sawada is from Chicago, if I am not insane. I tried to stop by their Chicago place but never make it. Now, somehow they are here and I know that it's time for me to get militaries... I had their military latte. To be honest, it's expensive but it's a good creation as there seems to be a limit of how coffee and tea can work together. I love their latte art- must be very seasoned barista. read more

Easily a 5 star, bottomless drip if you hang in the cafe. They use real mugs too which not a lot of nyc places do unfortunately. Barista was super nice and the place is awesome. It's connected to a restaurant thay also looks super nice but you can sit anywhere before 11 am Bc they open at 12 noon for food. If you go after noon there's still about five tables you can sit at. Really good selection. Also a lot of matcha options if that's your thing. They originated in Chicago and opened here a year ago read more

This falls under my top 3 coffee shops of all time worldwide category!! I would strongly recommend the hot military latte (matcha latte with espresso), but I'm excited to come back and try more of the menu. I was initially drawn to visit after hearing about Sawada's history and founder, Hiroshi Sawada, and I'm so glad I did. Everything about the matcha and espresso flavors was perfect, and the quality is incredibly consistent. I've only been to the NYC location, but I recommended this to my friend when she was near their Chicago location and she ended up coming back several times throughout the week, so I feel really validated. read more

This coffee shop is what I call finding a needle in a haystack. Sawada coffee is actually located inside a restaurant. The location was a little hard to find but well worth the effort. I tried both the military and camo lattes and both drinks were splendid. It's wuite magical how Sawada coffee nailed the recipe for a drink combining coffee and matcha or coffee and hoijicha. The drinks did have distinct flavors of both coffee and tea but the flavors were balanced. Sweetness was minimal. I had both drinks in hot and cold versions and they were both excellent. read more

What a cool spot... Its down an unassuming alley which i imagine can been interesting at night. However stumbled upon this place looking for a cafe.. the ambience is really cool, the coffee drinks while expensive are sizable and very good quality.. yeah the people who work here seem a bit douchey but it seems to fit the vibe and clientele.. worth checking out read more

I am a huge fan of anything Japanese but particularly Japanese food and especially their teas. Having worked as a barista for a short moment, I love it when a cafe or a barista can experiment and come up with what may sound gross but really turns out to be a delicious surprise. Sawada Coffee has managed to merge my two favorite caffeinated drinks not just into great combinations but also the eastern tea flavors that I love. Military Coffee: PROS: - great quantity: the mug that they serve it in is huge - great latte art: there's not much variety but the leaf that is done is very intricate - good balance of flavor in the tea: I believe this is hojicha and a latte combined. One thing that I didn't ask was where they source their coffee beans from. CONS: - NONE: I would like to see if at some point they could try serving their lattes with oat milk (my new love). One thing that I wish they had was more seating: there were only three to four small tables and they are usually occupied for extensive periods of time. In addition, as it's part of the Au Cheval Diner NYC (literally opens right into it), it can get pretty loud and hard to have a good conversation. Lighting is very dark so it's hard to get a good photo but with phone cameras being what they are, it's still possible. Always will come back here for a good latte and definitely excited to try some of their tea options in the future. read more

I first tried Sawada coffee in Chicago and it was one of the best lattes I've had! So excited that it's now in New York - highly recommend trying the black camo & military latte! Their lattes have just the right blend of flavors and sweetness, and to top it off, a beautiful design! It's a great spot to bring a date or just catch up with friends. It reminds me of a speakeasy coffee spot (you can purchase alcoholic drinks here too) - cozy, hipster vibes. You go through a shady alley and find a hidden gem! thanks to my Chi-Town friends, i've been enamored with Sawada Coffee's beautiful lattes for years! the mastermind behind it, Hiroshi Sawada, started Streamer Coffee Company in Tokyo before making his Stateside debut. i was able to stop in and try it on my trip, it was excellent! needless to say, i was hyped when i found out we're getting a Sawada Coffee, conveniently located inside Au Cheval! sooooo, after my itis inducing lunch at Au Cheval, i was able to order a black camo latte with my server to enjoy at my table. to me, the concept of tea and coffee isn't so strange, as there's a common drink in HK-style cafes called "Yuenyeung". the black camo latte was soooo beautiful and very aesthetically pleasing (possibly the BEST latte art i've ever seen!). but it's backed up with a very balanced and subtle combination of hojicha and coffee goes together well. it's nutty and slightly robust, with just enough caffeine to pack a punch. i really enjoyed my latte and it was the perfect ending to my meal. will be back again to try other drinks! read more

This is one of my favorite coffee shops in New York City. I've definitely thought of this place many times through the pandemic and frequented this page in the hopes that the "temp. closed" message will be gone. Whenever this place opens back up (which they will), I highly recommend the military latte. The matcha and espresso work perfectly together without being overwhelming. If you're in the mood for a more mild drink, I would recommend the black camo latte, which is hojicha and espresso. While the black camo latte is also creamy and delectable, it just doesn't hit the same as the military latte for me. All in all, I would definitely recommend trekking through the alleyways of chinatown for these drinks! read more

I was finishing up shopping and wanted a Cold Brew. I quickly searched for coffee, and this one popped up. I thought, couldn't be, Sawada coffee from Chicago?! The one with the famous military latte?!? I last had Sawada in Jan 2017 in my last visit to Chicago. I'm glad they have one here in NYC now too! I didn't get the military latte this time since it was a hot summer day, but the cold brew was just as good. In my first taste, I was like, yeah this is exactly how I remembered - coffee beans are STRONG here. They're basically like coffee beans on CRACK!!!!! Get ready for the caffeine jolt!!! I also bought a bag of coffee beans for home, which was really not bad, $15 for 12 oz. They also threw in the free cold brew too, totally worth it. Service was nice. They share a space with Au Cheval, their restaurant friend from Chicago?! Very cute. They have some shared dining tables with Au Cheval too, which is kinda cool. Glad to see they've finally branched out to NYC. Next, San Francisco?! My fingers are crossed. read more

This place is a hidden gem! I would never have walked down Cortlandt Alley, let alone walked into a coffee shop hidden inside a restaurant, if not for Yelp. They specialize in matcha drinks but I just got a coffee latte. It was very solid and they had a lovely seating area that was very clean and quiet. read more

It's very sceney in the sense it's in a dark and sexy diner of Au Chevalier. I've only tried the camo latte decaf with oat milk. It is like a slightly dark chocolate bitter malt taste with the espresso. Subtly sweet. I ordered it hot though it's available cold. Wanted to see what it really tastes like without ice to dilute. While it is good, it's pricey at $8.71. But that's bc of the oat milk. I'm more of a matcha girl so I will try their military latte next visit. Definitely worth it if you want the experience. read more

I had the black camo latte which is made with hojicha espresso. Oh my god. It's so fragrant and the hojicha elevates the drink entirely. I got it iced and it was delicious. I'm sure when it's colder, the hot one will be incredible too. I can see how some people might think that it might be too sweet (probably people who like their coffee black) but I thought it was perfect. Best coffee I've ever had and price is totally reasonable too - normal NYC coffee prices but you get special drinks. Good size too! No complaints and will come here every time I pass through. read more

Back when I lived in Chicago, Sawada Coffee was a destination on my to-do list that I never managed to fulfill before I moved. I was thrilled to find that they had opened a location in NYC - under the same roof as Au Cheval, another Chicago favorite, to boot! I had the military latte as that's the one that everyone is excited about, and it was delicious. I would never have expected espresso and matcha to complement each other so well, but they do in this drink. The latte art is also beautiful if you're here for the 'gram (no shame). A perfect drink before dining at Au Cheval (or you can just order it from your table!). read more

Went to the Chicago location last year and wouldn't stop telling my friends here how good everything was. Was then informed that there's an NY outpost now and had to pay a visit asap! It's every bit as good as the other reviews say. Definitely order the military latte (matcha & espresso) -- it's beautifully crafted and so creamy and delicious. I wish there was brighter lighting and more seating (think 4 tables tops), but otherwise everything is perfect. Certainly worth a visit! read more

Ok I was a little confused by their location because it's in a random-ass alley (and note: the sign to their door is for Au Cheval Diner, so I almost didn't find it) but do not judge by looks because this coffee changed my life! They have a hochija latte called the "Black Camo Latte" and it is like nothing I've had before. SO GOOD. read more

Came to get a coffee after lunch. The staff are nice enough but didn't clear out the tables fast enough, wouldn't be a problem if the space was large enough and the cups were disposable. It's very loud because it's a shared space with a restaurant. Coffee was good. read more

I put three stars because I only tried their coffee. Sawada is a small coffee bar with a few benches tucked into/sharing a space with a restaurant. I personally like to judge a coffee joint based on their drip coffee (I'm weird) and I was not a huge fan. I liked that this place was off of the beaten path and thus very quiet. They didn't have too many options in terms of food - just blueberry muffins and brownies, so come here for a quick coffee. read more

Nice space with a bar and restaurant attached. Coffee is good, staff is relaxed. They seem to let people spread into the restaurant area during the day when it isn't full. There's even a bar in the basement. Overall seems to be a good place if you're looking for a spot to relax that isn't cramped and crowded (at least during the mid-morning -- seems like the kind of spot that gets busy later on). read more

Tucked in Au Cheval - this place makes a killer latte. The top drinks are the black camo latte and the matcha latte. I got the black camo and it was unlike anything that I've had before. It was smooth, light, and had a delicious roasted taste to it. Be warned though - there's only about 3 circular tables and they are used in heavy rotation. You might be lucky to grab a seat, but they are routinely filled. Come here for an expertly made latte, the likes of which you have never had before. read more

I'm not a huge matcha fan, but the black camo latte was honestly lovely. It was not potent at all, yet distinct enough to appreciate. It's honestly a sophisticated drink, yet welcomes the amateur matcha drinker to a new world of interest. Kudos to this barista who designed it. My only knock on this is the cost of the latte. It's almost a $7 latte after tax. Yet again, it's not something you would probably have everyday. Worth experiencing though. read more

This is the ideal place for a business meeting/coffee date. Comfortable seating, spacious, not crowded during the day, and the music pleasant and not overly loud. It shares seating with a restaurant, so you can add dinner and drinks, or if you're on a budget just stick with the coffee menu while taking advantage of the fancy restaurant ambiance -- prices are what you'd expect compared to other boutique coffee shops in Manhattan. read more

Personally, I would have preferred more of the tiramisu flavor without the full tiramisu texture mixed into the drink. That said, it was an interesting concept and I'm glad I tried it. I'd definitely be open to coming back and trying another latte on a future visit.

That was no problem for me this time around, though. Overall this place is cute, and if you're looking for an Asian-inspired treat in midtown before a broadway show (Wicked is nearby) this could be an option for you. I just wouldn't expect it to particularly standout in terms of price and quality.

I've worked in restaurants and bars long enough to understand that staff drinking happens, but this was on another level entirely. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.

Take your coffee and treats to the park across the street with benches. You can people watch and enjoy your morning coffee!!
