Food was great - the flowery dumplings were tasty, and so was the spicy beef with coconut milk. Unfortunately: My main dish took a long time to arrive, even after the dinner rush had died down. After finishing, no one came around to offer me my bill for a fair amount of time, had to go to the till and pay. There is little or no air conditioning in this buiding. Eating spicy food during a heat wave in a building with no AC isn't comfortable. If I wanted thai food again and I was in the area, I'd make sure it wasn't as cool, and sit in the middle of the restaurant so they don't miss me. read more

What a great little place! Started with the Thai Spring roll; 4 large rolls filled with thread noodles and mushrooms. $7.50. Good price and size but not too impressed with flavour. Next up was Pad Priew Wan Gai (sweet & sour chicken). Size was good but it did not quite deliver on the flavour. **Noticing a trend here** Kang Panang Pork was up next. Expected chunks of meat but instead it was stir fry style pieces which get tough when cooked too long. The Panang curry did not meet my expectations but tasted ok; an 8/10 overall. The Sawasdee Fried Rice is pretty good and this one had flavour! Lastly there was the Crying Tiger Beef. Good cut of steak but rather small in size (about 6 med. pieces).The extra hot sauce was decent but not nearly hot enough. I asked for Thai spicy and so was disappointed I didn't cry. But the overall flavour of this dish was good. So the end result was a decent meal and great service. Prices are right and portion sizes are quite big (save for the Crying Beef). 3 people were filled up and with tip it cost $80 (with 1 beer and a soda). read more

My family and I ordered the Sawasdee salad, green curry, pad thai, gai pad ma khua (chicken with eggplant and black bean sauce), and pad kra prao tofu (deep fried tofu with green beans sauteed in red curry paste). Standouts were the pad thai and the chicken, which was quite spicy. We also enjoyed the tofu a lot. The salad was just ordinary salad with kind of a honey mustard-type dressing. We were a bit disappointed with the green curry: I personally thought it tasted good but it was just really watery, which we weren't too keen on. Perhaps they were just having an off-night. From the outside, it seems like a small place until you step in and it just opens up ... The place is nice and well decorated. Not very cozy or dark but not opulently spacious either. Our table for two was sized perfectly. Not the dim candlelit affair of a romantic setting or the blazingly lit setting of a mall joint - Good enough for a good dinner ! We were hungry when we went in so we skipped appetizers and went straight to the main course ... I ordered prawns n broccoli in oyster sauce and the missus ordered the stir fried veggies in garlic sauce. While they allowed us to replace stuff on the menu dishes, for the price of the veggie dish, I'd expect tofu already I there but we had to fork out another dollar for it - not too bad but something to keep in mind. The oyster sauce was excellent and the prawns were okay. I was too hungry to notice the size of the prawns and compare them to other places and begin hogging on the rice and sauce. The veggies had the same overall outlook with the sauce being excellent but the veggies keeping the experience mediocre and craving for a bit more love in the taste department. The ambience is nice and it isnt very pricey. Overall I'd recomend it to anyone craving some good thai taste which is also filling. If you're looking for a good dinner n drinks place this isnt the neighborhood. read more

Not exactly sure why this place is getting such great reviews. Ordered the papaya salad first and it tasted a bit mushy and soft. The tomatoes as well. Ordered the pam prat dish (spinach chicken peanut sauce) and it tasted alright at first but then i noticed the chicken had a strange after taste. (cooked with tamarind sauce) I'm glad there's option to choose instead of just tomato sauce. The sweetness is well balanced. Portion is good to share for two. We also ordered stuffed chicken wings with chilli plum sauce for appy...turned out really tasty! "Crying tiger beef" awesome!!! Myself and five friends chose this place for dinner (again) last night and as always, the food was impressive!! The service is always friendly and the food is so good it's hard to leave any left on the table. Although the sauce is very rich, go for the "20B", it's crispy chicken that is served in a coconut curry inside a young coconut. The Chor Muang dumplings are always incredible and offer that slighty sweet taste that is balanced with the spicyness of black pepper!! This is by far the best Thai restaurant that I've been to. The food is simply amazing. Curries are great. Phad thai is delicious and a pretty big portion. My girlfriend got hooked on the spring rolls, a definite must have. Perfect place to order several dishes and share. We usually take out about half of what we order because the food is so good. I've lived in Thailand for 6 years so I know Thai food very well. I ordered my favorite Thai Chicken Fried Rice, the taste was authentic and very good. However, when I asked for the fish sauce which usually comes with the fried rice but I had to ask for it, there were too much chilli and the chilli was not cut the right way. Other than that, the food is amazing. The reason I give this place a three star is because it lacks the Thai hospitality, the staff did not give a proper Thai greeting even though they are Thai people. Also, the staff act as though they are in a fast paced Chinese restaurant. Thai restaurant is supposed to be slow and relaxing, but I didn't feel that way. Furthermore, the food prices are too expensive for Thai food. I paid almost $13 for my fried rice which is way too expensive because the ingredients don't costs that much. There was quite a bit of mushrooms and prawns in the soup. 18b. Green Curry in coconut milk with bell pepper, basil leaves and bamboo shoot. With choice of Chicken, Beef, or Pork 13.95/Prawns or Fish $14.95 2.5/5 - curry was too watery. The spice was there but not much flavour. We had it with fish. The fish was not very fresh. 20b. Hor Mok Gai Ma Praw Onn (Deep fried crispy chicken breast with young coconut meat in red coconut milk curry served in whole coconut) $14.95 2.75/5 - better than the green curry. It was more of the presentation than the flavour. 58b. Pad Thai (Stir fried thin rice noodles with tofu, prawns, egg, green onion and bean sprout in choice of tamarind Sauce) $11.95 3.75/5 - a little too oily. You could tell they used tamarind instead of ketchup. Thai Iced Tea 3.5/5 - It looked a little watery but the flavour and caffeine was definitely there. It was a little sweeter than I want. Service 3/5 - This place was busy so I didn't expect too much. We needed to ask for a few times before someone came to take our orders. Our bill came without asking. Luckily we made a reservation even on a weekday. There were a few groups waiting when I got there around 7pm. I came here before once 5+ years ago. Last time was just okay. I've eaten here three times and the food is delicious. The service however is pretty bad. My last visit, and it will be my last visit, we waited over an hour to be seated. We waited that long because I really wanted Thai food. After our wait we were seated, handed menus and we didn't see our waiter for at least 20 minutes. At that point, my husband and I got up and left. My other two visits were very similar however we placed our orders, received our food and then the waiter vanished. Both times me had to waive down our server to get the check. You would have thought we would have learned our lesson after the second visit, but the third tones the charm. Best thai food in Vancouver, my boyfriend and I keep coming back, especially for their flower dumplings and pad thai. The flower dumplings, probably colored purple by ube paste, are so well seasoned and savory they blew our mind. I asked what seasonings they use, and while they insist they just use pepper, there has got to be more. The pad thai is really tasty, and they use a tamarind paste which gives it a really nice flavor and, according to the owner who came out to talk to us once, is authentic. We usually go early, around 5 to beat the crowds and its really nice. Will be going back again soon. read more

One taste of the coconut rice and I was in love (though I must admit that I have a thing for coconut). We can here around 6:30pm on a weekday for 2 people and there was still plenty of space available. Staff here are incredibly friendly and makes the entire dining experience very welcoming. Our visit to our once favourite Thai place resulted in seemingly over salty food. In particular the duck curry and the pad see-ew seemed to be way off in the salt category. However, this may just be an off night as we've had many occasions where the food here was just amazing and I've definitely recommended this place to a lot of people in the past. Presentation, Portion and Taste will not displease you if you like Thai food. This place isn't top notch but it was pretty good still and I would recommend this place to any of my friends. I order Kang Panang with 3/4 on the hot meter which was delightful : ) w/ a side of rice and I didn't have any issues gobbling down this dish !! I went to Sawasdee Thai with a few colleagues last Tuesday night. We weren't greeted warmly but a couple of the other servers were much friendlier when we were seated. The menu has tons of options--a fair amount of vegetarian ones at that--and the service was generally attentive and courteous. We ordered the deep fried shrimp cakes, pad thai with tamarind sauce, prawn kang panang (red curry), pad pak (sautéed mixed vegetables with garlic sauce), coconut rice, and black rice with coconut milk for dessert. Everything was tasty but not amazing. Not something I would seek out again. The bill came to around $16 for each of us, which was a great deal, so I'd recommend this restaurant to people who live/work in the area and who are looking for affordable Thai food. But with a lot of restaurants on Main Street, this one does not particularly stand out. read more

I have tried pad thai twice so far. *The first time was better than the second time. so the taste may not be consistent. I want to try it one more time to see. To make the pad thai Thai style that I like, I asked for lime, fish sauce & chili, and peanut chunks. Mmmm, then it was very good! We are very very picky when it comes to Thai food, but both me and my husband very much enjoyed the meal there. Parking is kind of hard to find in the area. Street parking only. The amount of Thai restaurants in Vancouver is staggering.... Almost as many as Starbucks!!! Had a craving and Yelped! Sawasdee came up. Ambiance is a lot nicer than you mom and pop restaurants. Papaya salad. 7 out of 10 Tom yam soup 8 out of 10 Deep fried tofu 6 out of 10 Tamarind pad Thai 9 out of 10 Chicken green curry 8 out of 10 Beef Kang Panang 6 out of 10, because the beef is a bit disappointing. Went there on a Sat night without reservation, luckily my wife and I were able to get a small table around 7pm (the previous customers just left). All servers (we only saw females) are very polite and friendly. We wanted to order Gai Yaang (Barbecued chicken - Thai Style) but unfortunately it's sold out. Then the server came back and told us, this dish is a very popular one and usually will be sold out soon during dinner time, and suggested us to book the dish at time of booking a table next time. We turned out ordered: 1. Tom Kah Soup - Lemon flavoured coconut milk with straw mushroom and galanga (Thai ginger) and your choice of chicken or prawns (we chose prawns), 2. Roast Duck Curry - Red curry with roast duck, pineapple, tomato and bamboo shoot in coconut milk, and 3. Phad Thai - Stir fried rice noodles with tofu, prawn, egg, peanut, green onion and bean sprout. 1. The soup has a very light spicy in taste with coconut flavor, a little bit on the sour side, but we just loved it. It's better to be consumed while it's still hot/warm, cuz it became too sour when cool. Lots of straw mushrooms (I think they're fresh ones but not canned) and prawns. 2. The curry is not as spicy as we expected (we love spicy food though) and it's in creamy sauce with coconut taste. Duck pieces are boneless. Even we have fried noodles, we ordered a bowl of steamed rice cuz it's the best to match the curry. :b 3. The fried noodles has less meat as we expected, but still very delicious. And there are both cooked (mixed with the noodles) and raw (on the side) bean sprouts, which is a good thing for us cuz we don't like raw bean sprouts much, so it's a lot easier for us to just ignore the raw ones on the side.
