Thanks to some lovely friends for getting this for us to try for my birthday! Each dessert looked so impeccable and the taste was so refreshing. The berry cake, mocha cake and fruit tarts were the perfect textures with the flavor jumping out on my palate and the tart had the best crisp. I feel the part of my identity that is not a cake / sweets person is being worn down from all these well made treats!
Excellent Princess cake as always. An early Mother's Day treat. The taste and decorations are always consistent and reliable and beautifully presented. An 8" princess cake costs around $70. Definitely a must try if you love marzipan, jam and fresh cream. My favorite celebration cake.
My family and I have been going here for a couple of years now and have loved every cake we have gotten. I remember trying the mango cheesecake as well. It wasn't too sweet and the cheesecake didn't feel too heavy like other cheesecakes do- this goes for the strawberry cheesecake as well. I would say that the strawberry tastes better than the mango because the mango was a bit sour. The tiramisu mousse cake is a family favorite and we have gotten it a few times now. It's perfectly balanced and not too sweet (which is very important lol). The workers are super kind and when I went to pick up a cake once, the lady gave me a couple free cream puffs. There is no seating so this is definitely the place where you get your sweet treat and go somewhere else. Note that parking can be a bit hard to find. You can also place your orders online or make a call.

The cakes are pretty good, but we had such an unpleasant experience with the girl that helped us. We came in and waited in line. Got called up. She asked us what we wanted and when we said one thing she kept rudely saying what else before we even had a chance to tell her what else. They had 50% off cakes and then we asked her the flavors. Then we asked how much they would be and she said look at the board, 50% off that. I think her coworker realized how rude she was being and intervened and let us know the price. We asked her what cake this particular one since it didn't have a label was and she goes same as the one on the bottom, read the label. She spent more effort saying that rather than just stating the name of the cake. We got ended up getting three cakes, the strawberry shortcake, chocolate mousse and princess cake. I would skip the princess cake here and head to ambrosia. Theirs are 10x better.
Selection at the beginning of the day was excellent and selection plentiful Service is super friendly The shop was very clean. Strawberry cake was amazing. Birthday special !
Grabbed a slice of their two most popular items: Princess cake: Nice, smooth flavors with a nice almond essence from the marzipan. I can see why this is so popular. Strawberry short cake: Solid cake that reminds me of the WF Strawberry chiffon cake. Overall, would recommend the Princess cake if you want a unique experience, but a slice is a bit pricey ($7)
I have ordered from here many times over the years including my wedding cake back about 11 years ago. So I figure its time for a review! The cake that I recently got was good tasting but it really made my stomach hurt every time I ate it. We did finish it but something was a bit off. It was smaller then I remember it being and there may have been a layer of cake missing in the middle. I think I remember the cakes being 3 layers of cake with creme or filling in between??? It was advertised as having strawberry filling which it did not have. The cake we ordered this time was chocolate with strawberry's & whipping cream frosting. There was very little strawberry like maybe 10 -15 slices on top and not inside the filling or any other part of the cake so it lacked balance and acidity to break up the rich cream inside. The cake is flavorful & creative but I just have those few issues that I wanted to bring up.
I've been to Schubert's a few times, and I'm incredibly disappointed. Schubert's is located in inner Richmond in the San Francisco area, and initially was highly recommended as one of the better bakeries to go to for special occasion cakes. A cake can really make or break that special occasion, and they succeeded in ruining one. I had ordered over the phone, and ordered based on what sounded good, and what was suggested. The cakes are very pricey, and frankly overpriced. What may have been wonderful in years past, hasn't been my experience. The store staff is off putting, unwelcoming, and I dare say rude. I picked up my order ( mango mousse) for a birthday celebration. I had requested candles in a certain color, and was presented candles in silver. " That's all we have" it would have been proper to let me know upfront when I placed the order, and was told " no problem". The cake was horrible. All of it. The mango flavor tasted like tin/metal. The actual cake was dry and tasted like freezer burn. It was inedible. It was also $75.00. There MUST be better bakeries that offer delicious birthday cakes in the San Francisco area. This isn't one of them.
Wonderful bakery! I've always gone in the morning- it's quiet, the staff are super helpful, and there's rarely a crowd. Cakes are abundantly decorated and beautiful, including the packaging. The strawberry shortcake is chock full of fresh strawberries and in lieu of frosting is layered with light whipped cream. Not too sweet and super moist . And unheard of post covid prices for the size of an 8" whole cake at $40!
Ordered for pick up 24 hour before. I opted for the 6 in Swedish princess cake but with ivory marzipan. The person taking my order over the phone made sure the spelling of the words and names were all correct. Pick up process was easy - walked up to the register and told them my name. This bakery does have several spots for seating. They have a little sample tray in front as well. I noticed adding lettering was an extra $2 if you do it there but it wasnt charged for mine so seems like ordering in advance is the way to go! There were still plenty of variety and sizes of cake available on display when I got there at 3pm so I would think it's possible to do last min cake pick up too Cake was nicely decorated and tasted soft and fluffy inside. Only the outside marzipan layer was sweet. Price for the princess cake here is $2-$3 more than other places in SF but considering you can opt for another color here other than green is worth it to me!
4/5: Princess cake is good but a little too sweet. $7 for a small slice. 3 layers of raspberry with good fondant.
It was a rainy Monday when I was walking along Clement Street and noticed Schubert's was open. The glass cases were mostly empty, but I saw a sign for 30% off all whole cakes and slices. There was also a small sign indicating they were day-old cakes, and the cashier mentioned they're open until 2:30 PM on Mondays (they're usually closed Mondays and Tuesdays). I didn't feel like getting a cake, so I went with a Hazelnut Nutmeg Cookie ($1.10) and a Black & White Shortbread ($1.10). Both were very good and not stale, even when I ate them the next day. I especially liked the Black & White Shortbread. I would come back on a Monday--maybe next time I'll try one of the cakes at 30% off.

Got my mom's birthday cake here and she loved it!! Swedish princess cake is delicious and beautiful! Ordered online and was able to choose a pick up time that worked for me. Smaller cakes are available in store whenever. When I went to pick up my cake I was so tempted to buy so many little ones! Everyone there had been super nice! Our favorite, happy place! I appreciate the kind, wonderful and above and beyond service I always receive, and particularly today. My daughter especially loves coming here for the individual chocolate mouse cakes and for special occasions. Kevin, you're the BEST. Update: I left a review here at yelp when I bought a cake for NYE. They explained that they were close for the first week of January. I just want to thank Ralph for reaching out to me right away. He understood my concerns and provided the best possible solution. Thank you for demonstrating great customer service despite my frustration. I'll definitely trust and recommend this store again. read more

Long overdue.....but No cons found since 2012 always a double thumbs up. Frequented here almost every weekend many many many many many years ago, that was the bad side of living in the city so many temptations lol. But for every occasions we have to have at least a cake from Schubert's just so everyone can have a taste of what we always rave about. The place is small so it is always congested so having a big groups is not advisable. Its more of a in and out situation although this could be a good spot for solo travelers. read more

Interesting desserts but still doesn't compare to my beloved Ambrosia on Ocean. And this is more expensive. Schubert's is a classic that has been around for a very long time here on Clement and people still line up for this bakery. Due to COVID they do not hav dine in available and have social distancing enforced. Slice of cake can be $5.50 which is expensive compared to Ambrosia. They did have some interesting selections. Check out my pics for what we tried. Overall it was tasty but nothing extraordinary. read more

Great little bakery with lots and lots of choices. I came on a Saturday morning and the line was pretty short. They only allow three customers inside at a time and the line is formed outside. I purchased a mini fruit tart and their opera cake. The fruit tart was delicious. I didn't even eat it til the next day and the crust was still perfect and buttery and the fruit was fresh. It's small but perfect if you're craving a little bit of sweet. We purchased the opera cake for a birthday. They personalize it on the spot and it took less than a few minutes. The cake is smaller than their other cakes but it still fed 6 people and had plenty leftover for layer. The flavors are rich and sweet without being overwhelmingly sweet. The cake was also not dry and held up well in the car ride back to the east bay. I can't wait to drop by again and try more cakes! read more

This is a go to place for good desserts. Being I'm not really into desserts, I wouldn't do true justice in describing sweets. We ordered a napoleon and a tiramisu. They do their interpretation of these desserts from what I had from a great German bakery which has long went out of business decades ago. The napoleon Schubert's make has fresh fruits in their napoleon, the one from the old German bakery had a strawberry type of jelly and the whipped cream they used was heavenly not to mention the puff pastry was out of this world! It's just sad I won't get to experience the napoleon of old again. Maybe a trip to Germany is the key. The tiramisu interpretation, eh, they have a layer of chocolate cake in the bottom, whatever, and I didn't get that hit of espresso coffee flavor. I do admit, the best tiramisu was one that was made by my sister. She used lady fingers and a most potent espresso. Don't judge this bakery by my descriptions because I don't do justice to desserts, because I don't consider desserts as food. They're kind of an afterthought to me. read more

Today is my bday and for the past 10 years hubby always ordered my favorite Napoleon cake from Schubert but this year he forgot to place an order before last Sunday so he was not able to purchase a whole Napoleon cake. Hubby said Schubert was closed on last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday so he rush over to Schubert this morning hoping he could buy a whole cake but unfortunately staff said they don't have a whole Napoleon but have individual pieces so hubby bought 12 individual pieces. Honestly, I was little disappointed because the individual pieces was not as nice looking as the whole cake (see my last year's Napoleon cake). I guess it's my bday so I was lucky because the piece I ate had this plastic like thingy in it. It was a larger piece but after I pressed on it a few times and passed it to hubby to examine what it was the plastic thingy was separated into small pieces. This will not stop our tradition getting a cake from Schubert but we might get a different cake since Napoleon requires to be ordered in advance and it doesn't keep well because the Napoleon won't be crispy and will be soggy the next day therefore Schubert don't make more. Napoleon is pretty much make to order so if you didn't order in advance like my hubby you won't be able to buy one. In addition to this the plastic thingy in my piece of Napoleon cake got me little scared what will I find next time. read more
tried this place quickly last Saturday coz of my husband's co workers at United Lounge. Their cales were close to Shengkee, not so sweet and just right. Schubert's Bakery is my favorite go-to cake spots for any occasion. I think my family has been purchasing my birthday cakes from here since I was in elementary school! Their mousse cakes (especially mango or raspberry) is my favorite! It is so soft, creamy, and flavorful. Every cake I've tried from them was amazing EXCEPT for their Yule log. It was actually pretty disappointing. The yule log looked pretty but it was very dry and I could barely taste any flavor aside from pure sugar. They have offer so many options -- different types of cakes, flavors, and sizes! I love the small "individual" sized cakes. You can buy a variety of those sizes to sample their different flavors! You can pre-order online (takes 48hrs to process) and set a date/time for pick-up. This is especially helpful during the holidays since you can skip the line! It'll save you so much time. The store is located on busy Clement so finding parking may take some time. Most of the parking around is metered so it will take especially long (and some luck) to find free parking. read more

Everyone who grew up in SF knows about Schubert's Bakery! I always love coming here; although, Sugar Bowl Bakery in the Outer Richmond was closer to me. I would still make the trek to Inner Richmond when I wanted some colorful desserts. I bring my kids here now, and of course I had to order a cake for my son's 15th birthday! I love their tiramisu btw - it's the bee's knees. They make everything fresh, and it's all made with love. The strawberry shortcake we ordered was moist, tasty, and not overly sweet. IMHO, it's their signature cake. It varies in price with the size, so we ordered the 8", which serves 10-12 ppl for $35.95. The prices have gone up since I was little, but what hasn't in SF! The decorations on the cake are edible, so don't toss them away. I may stop by later for an eclair or two :) See you on Yelp (SYOY)! read more
It was my mf bday so my sweet gf got me a black forest cake from Schubert's! Bless her heart it was so damn good I ate like 3 quarters of it thru the weekend. Soooooo gooood. Best black forest cake I've had. In SF I've only tried it at 20th century cafe and this one is MILES better. No competition. 20th century cafe does have an amazing russian honey cake so def try that if you have a chance. I am also planning to try it at Hahdough which is another great spot, check them out as well! Anyway back to Schubert's. What can I say? It's a damn symphony of pleasures. We've got the top layer of airy and not overly sweet cream. We've got the chocolate crumbles on top. We've got the sponge (can you tell I've binged the entire of Great British Bake-off during quarantine?), we've got the uhh.... liqueur soaked sponge? We've got the kirsch cherries. All of it is amazing and I could seriously just pretend I am big goose and get that good old foie gras treatment with all these individual pieces. This cake is amazing and you should do yourself a favor and find an occasion to eat it. That is all. I am already looking forward one!! For real tho if Paul Hollywood came thru I am sure this one would be a handshake. read more
So glad I ordered a cake for my husband's birthday from this cute little bakery! I went for the 6 inch strawberry shortcake and it was so cutely decorated. Ordering online was easy and the pick-up was also hassle-free. And as far as the taste goes it was absolutely delicious! So moist, not too sweet and with plenty of berries. The cream on the top was also very light. Overall a great cake and I cant wait to try more cakes from this place! read more
Wow still legit since the 90's when I use to go often to get cakes for birthday parties. I don't think I've had since then. Sweet Russian bakery lady is the best. Mango mousse tasted the same as in high school, consistent. Tiramisu melt in your mouth and perfect balance of sweet and moisture of espresso brandy? Soaking. Chocolate nice rich and decadent but not heavy at all. Got all 3 small sizes and lovely lady gave me a pack of vanilla horseshoes. Schubert's to be honest is better than pastries at bouchon. Had same time bouchon eclairs, horrible dry pate choux, macarons, call the dentist right after super sweet. Will be back next birthday. read more

Such lovely cakes!!! And not just visually, they were sooooo amazing. The Chocolate Truffle Torte was devoured in less than 5 minutes and the princess cake was hidden by my aunt, who's baby shower we were celebrating (luckily I got a slice). I would 10/10 recommend. I can't wait to go back and get another cake and try the fruit tart. Also every time I have gone they always throw in an extra little goodie, it feels so generous, and the sample is always amazing. Amazing cakes for years and years! I have loved their princess cake, various tarts, and cakes... always beautifully decorated and delicious! Most recently, we had their fruit tart for Thanksgiving. Gorgeous and yummy! The crust was firm enough to hold the massive amount of fruit. I just wish they put more of their custard. Soooo good! read more

I went on a Sunday morning and there was no wait surprisingly! I got 2 cakes for my sister and mom's birthdays. I definitely Recommend the mango cake! It was so light and fluffy and perfect for people who love sweets and who like to shy away from it The chocolate cake had a lot of mouse and little of the actual cake. It was also super bitter but it made me feel a bit healthier than I really was. They were also so nice to give me a complimentary tart which I gave away but I appreciated the gesture! read more

How can anybody have so much goodness in one place??? This place does. It is my favorite bakery and you will not be disappointed with anything from here. Everything I ordered was so good, I love them all. From the chocolate mousse cake, to the pastries. I'm only disappointed that they don't have a location in the South Bay, but I will drive to San Francisco just to get my fix. read more

Do they decorate your order for a baby shower?
I know they will write on a cake but I suggest you simply call them for another type of request.
Do they sell out of cakes, is it recommended to pre order?
I came in 5 minutes before closing one time and they still had 4 cakes left. If you want a specific cake it's probably best to preorder but if not, then all their cake selections are pretty good.

Perhaps not. It would be good to have a backup plan, or at least be flexible as to what type of cake. Other people might also be trying to order. Good luck!
