Let me first say that i hate marzipan and alwaya avoid any sweets that have it. For my birthday, my family suggested getting a cake a Schubert's and they mentioned that Schubert's princess cake is very popular. I was a bit hesitant because of my marzipan dislike but i agreed anyway because i was very curious. To our surprise, the cake tasted better than we expected! The inner layer was moist but the cake texture was not as spongie as asian cakes that are made from egg white meringue. The outer marzipan layer is sweet but not overly, and i like that it doesn't have that fake pungent almond syrup flavor or concentrate that is present in almond croissant or other marzipan sweets. The inner layer has a nice raspberry jam and whipped cream that go surprisingly well with the marizpan. Overall the cake exceeded all our family's expectation and all the seemingly clashing flavors mesh very well with each other!!! I would totally get this cake again on another special occasion. We also got a few small slices andddd to my asian people who do not like super sweet cakes, none of the cakes we tried at Schubert's, including the princess cake, are overly sweet, which is a HUGE PLUS for my family. I have tried a fair share of popular bakeries and a lot of times i was disappointed, so im very impressed with Schubert's. The price is a little high but heck, i'll take it haha. read more

Long overdue.....but No cons found since 2012 always a double thumbs up. Frequented here almost every weekend many many many many many years ago, that was the bad side of living in the city so many temptations lol. But for every occasions we have to have at least a cake from Schubert's just so everyone can have a taste of what we always rave about. The place is small so it is always congested so having a big groups is not advisable. Its more of a in and out situation although this could be a good spot for solo travelers. read more

My go to place for getting desserts whenever I'm attending a friends gathering. I like that they have large cakes and multiple options for mini desserts or cake slices. Occasionally there is a line but the staff are always helpful and the line moves quickly. Everything is super fresh and I have yet to be disappointed by any of the desserts. Pretty much if you like chocolate cakes this is the place to be. My favorites would be Chocolate Truffle Torte and their Black Forest Cake. I like that their cakes and desserts aren't overly sweet. read more

Interesting desserts but still doesn't compare to my beloved Ambrosia on Ocean. And this is more expensive. Schubert's is a classic that has been around for a very long time here on Clement and people still line up for this bakery. Due to COVID they do not hav dine in available and have social distancing enforced. Slice of cake can be $5.50 which is expensive compared to Ambrosia. They did have some interesting selections. Today is my bday and for the past 10 years hubby always ordered my favorite Napoleon cake from Schubert but this year he forgot to place an order before last Sunday so he was not able to purchase a whole Napoleon cake. Hubby said Schubert was closed on last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday so he rush over to Schubert this morning hoping he could buy a whole cake but unfortunately staff said they don't have a whole Napoleon but have individual pieces so hubby bought 12 individual pieces. Honestly, I was little disappointed because the individual pieces was not as nice looking as the whole cake (see my last year's Napoleon cake). I guess it's my bday so I was lucky because the piece I ate had this plastic like thingy in it. It was a larger piece but after I pressed on it a few times and passed it to hubby to examine what it was the plastic thingy was separated into small pieces. This will not stop our tradition getting a cake from Schubert but we might get a different cake since Napoleon requires to be ordered in advance and it doesn't keep well because the Napoleon won't be crispy and will be soggy the next day therefore Schubert don't make more. Napoleon is pretty much make to order so if you didn't order in advance like my hubby you won't be able to buy one. In addition to this the plastic thingy in my piece of Napoleon cake got me little scared what will I find next time. read more

Flavorful cakes and pastries, and the cakes are really pretty. We decided to get a strawberry shortcake cake for a friend's birthday. The flavor was good - too many strawberry chunks and less cake sponge, the sweetness content was apt. They also had a very pretty vanilla and jam cake called the princess_something and that looked really beautiful. They have many other flavors including different kinds of chocolate flavors, mocha, tiramisu, vanilla, blackberry. I'm definitely going there again to try their pastries and cake slices. read more

I'm so sad! Schubert's was so good. They had the best variety pack of their shortbread cookies. Apparently ownership recently changed. I was gifted a pack of their Neapolitan cookies when I was in SF earlier this month and the strawberry shortbread was hard and as a brick. Seriously. So glad I ordered a cake for my husband's birthday from this cute little bakery! I went for the 6 inch strawberry shortcake and it was so cutely decorated. Ordering online was easy and the pick-up was also hassle-free. And as far as the taste goes it was absolutely delicious! So moist, not too sweet and with plenty of berries. Great little bakery with lots and lots of choices. I came on a Saturday morning and the line was pretty short. They only allow three customers inside at a time and the line is formed outside. I purchased a mini fruit tart and their opera cake. The fruit tart was delicious. I didn't even eat it til the next day and the crust was still perfect and buttery and the fruit was fresh. It's small but perfect if you're craving a little bit of sweet. We purchased the opera cake for a birthday. They personalize it on the spot and it took less than a few minutes. The cake is smaller than their other cakes but it still fed 6 people and had plenty leftover for layer. The flavors are rich and sweet without being overwhelmingly sweet. The cake was also not dry and held up well in the car ride back to the east bay. I can't wait to drop by again and try more cakes! read more

This is a go to place for good desserts. Being I'm not really into desserts, I wouldn't do true justice in describing sweets. We ordered a napoleon and a tiramisu. They do their interpretation of these desserts from what I had from a great German bakery which has long went out of business decades ago. The napoleon Schubert's make has fresh fruits in their napoleon, the one from the old German bakery had a strawberry type of jelly and the whipped cream they used was heavenly not to mention the puff pastry was out of this world! It's just sad I won't get to experience the napoleon of old again. Maybe a trip to Germany is the key. The tiramisu interpretation, eh, they have a layer of chocolate cake in the bottom, whatever, and I didn't get that hit of espresso coffee flavor. I do admit, the best tiramisu was one that was made by my sister. She used lady fingers and a most potent espresso. Don't judge this bakery by my descriptions because I don't do justice to desserts, because I don't consider desserts as food. They're kind of an afterthought to me. read more

The staff is a 5star with great customer service very friendly. I ordered the quote popular mango mousse and a small piece of tiramisu just to try. I probably ordered the wrong cake. I'm not a big fan of the mango mousse. I guess I expected a bit more sweetness towards the cake. The chocolate decorations are A+ good quality chocolate. Schubert's Bakery is my favorite go-to cake spots for any occasion. I think my family has been purchasing my birthday cakes from here since I was in elementary school! Their mousse cakes (especially mango or raspberry) is my favorite! It is so soft, creamy, and flavorful. Every cake I've tried from them was amazing EXCEPT for their Yule log. It was actually pretty disappointing. The yule log looked pretty but it was very dry and I could barely taste any flavor aside from pure sugar. They have offer so many options -- different types of cakes, flavors, and sizes! I love the small "individual" sized cakes. You can buy a variety of those sizes to sample their different flavors! You can pre-order online (takes 48hrs to process) and set a date/time for pick-up. This is especially helpful during the holidays since you can skip the line! It'll save you so much time. The store is located on busy Clement so finding parking may take some time. Most of the parking around is metered so it will take especially long (and some luck) to find free parking. read more

Everyone who grew up in SF knows about Schubert's Bakery! I always love coming here; although, Sugar Bowl Bakery in the Outer Richmond was closer to me. I would still make the trek to Inner Richmond when I wanted some colorful desserts. I bring my kids here now, and of course I had to order a cake for my son's 15th birthday! I love their tiramisu btw - it's the bee's knees. They make everything fresh, and it's all made with love. The strawberry shortcake we ordered was moist, tasty, and not overly sweet. IMHO, it's their signature cake. It varies in price with the size, so we ordered the 8", which serves 10-12 ppl for $35.95. The prices have gone up since I was little, but what hasn't in SF! It was my mf bday so my sweet gf got me a black forest cake from Schubert's! Bless her heart it was so damn good I ate like 3 quarters of it thru the weekend. Soooooo gooood. Best black forest cake I've had. In SF I've only tried it at 20th century cafe and this one is MILES better. No competition. 20th century cafe does have an amazing russian honey cake so def try that if you have a chance. I am also planning to try it at Hahdough which is another great spot, check them out as well! Anyway back to Schubert's. What can I say? It's a damn symphony of pleasures. We've got the top layer of airy and not overly sweet cream. We've got the chocolate crumbles on top. We've got the sponge (can you tell I've binged the entire of Great British Bake-off during quarantine?), we've got the uhh.... liqueur soaked sponge? We've got the kirsch cherries. All of it is amazing and I could seriously just pretend I am big goose and get that good old foie gras treatment with all these individual pieces. This cake is amazing and you should do yourself a favor and find an occasion to eat it. That is all. I am already looking forward one!! Wow still legit since the 90's when I use to go often to get cakes for birthday parties. I don't think I've had since then. Sweet Russian bakery lady is the best. Mango mousse tasted the same as in high school, consistent. Tiramisu melt in your mouth and perfect balance of sweet and moisture of espresso brandy? Soaking. Chocolate nice rich and decadent but not heavy at all. Got all 3 small sizes and lovely lady gave me a pack of vanilla horseshoes. Schubert's to be honest is better than pastries at bouchon. Had same time bouchon eclairs, horrible dry pate choux, macarons, call the dentist right after super sweet. Will be back next birthday. read more

Such lovely cakes!!! And not just visually, they were sooooo amazing. The Chocolate Truffle Torte was devoured in less than 5 minutes and the princess cake was hidden by my aunt, who's baby shower we were celebrating (luckily I got a slice). I would 10/10 recommend. I can't wait to go back and get another cake and try the fruit tart. Also every time I have gone they always throw in an extra little goodie, it feels so generous, and the sample is always amazing. My boyfriend and I got a princess cake from here for Father's Day, soon after leaving the store my boyfriend dropped the cake box, ruining the garnishing and cake finish. I went back to the store to see if there was anything they could do, the staff ended up giving us a brand new cake in under 5 minutes! I've been coming to this bakery for over 20 years. Easily one of the best bakeries in SF. Everything is so beautifully presented, and you won't be disappointed by anything that you try. One thing is, the slices definitely are VERY SMALL. I would say they shrunk by 25 percent but the prices have not shrunk LOL. Came here for Mother's Day and they gave us a free chocolate tart which was a nice touch. read more
