Thanks to some lovely friends for getting this for us to try for my birthday! Each dessert looked so impeccable and the taste was so refreshing. The berry cake, mocha cake and fruit tarts were the perfect textures with the flavor jumping out on my palate and the tart had the best crisp. I feel the part of my identity that is not a cake / sweets person is being worn down from all these well made treats!
Excellent Princess cake as always. An early Mother's Day treat. The taste and decorations are always consistent and reliable and beautifully presented. An 8" princess cake costs around $70. Definitely a must try if you love marzipan, jam and fresh cream. My favorite celebration cake.
My family and I have been going here for a couple of years now and have loved every cake we have gotten. I remember trying the mango cheesecake as well. It wasn't too sweet and the cheesecake didn't feel too heavy like other cheesecakes do- this goes for the strawberry cheesecake as well. I would say that the strawberry tastes better than the mango because the mango was a bit sour. The tiramisu mousse cake is a family favorite and we have gotten it a few times now. It's perfectly balanced and not too sweet (which is very important lol). The workers are super kind and when I went to pick up a cake once, the lady gave me a couple free cream puffs. There is no seating so this is definitely the place where you get your sweet treat and go somewhere else. Note that parking can be a bit hard to find. You can also place your orders online or make a call.

The cakes are pretty good, but we had such an unpleasant experience with the girl that helped us. We came in and waited in line. Got called up. She asked us what we wanted and when we said one thing she kept rudely saying what else before we even had a chance to tell her what else. They had 50% off cakes and then we asked her the flavors. Then we asked how much they would be and she said look at the board, 50% off that. I think her coworker realized how rude she was being and intervened and let us know the price. We asked her what cake this particular one since it didn't have a label was and she goes same as the one on the bottom, read the label. She spent more effort saying that rather than just stating the name of the cake. We got ended up getting three cakes, the strawberry shortcake, chocolate mousse and princess cake. I would skip the princess cake here and head to ambrosia. Theirs are 10x better.

Grabbed a slice of their two most popular items: Princess cake: Nice, smooth flavors with a nice almond essence from the marzipan. I can see why this is so popular. Strawberry short cake: Solid cake that reminds me of the WF Strawberry chiffon cake. Overall, would recommend the Princess cake if you want a unique experience, but a slice is a bit pricey ($7)
I have ordered from here many times over the years including my wedding cake back about 11 years ago. So I figure its time for a review! The cake that I recently got was good tasting but it really made my stomach hurt every time I ate it. We did finish it but something was a bit off. It was smaller then I remember it being and there may have been a layer of cake missing in the middle. I think I remember the cakes being 3 layers of cake with creme or filling in between??? It was advertised as having strawberry filling which it did not have. The cake we ordered this time was chocolate with strawberry's & whipping cream frosting. There was very little strawberry like maybe 10 -15 slices on top and not inside the filling or any other part of the cake so it lacked balance and acidity to break up the rich cream inside. The cake is flavorful & creative but I just have those few issues that I wanted to bring up.
I've been to Schubert's a few times, and I'm incredibly disappointed. Schubert's is located in inner Richmond in the San Francisco area, and initially was highly recommended as one of the better bakeries to go to for special occasion cakes. A cake can really make or break that special occasion, and they succeeded in ruining one. I had ordered over the phone, and ordered based on what sounded good, and what was suggested. The cakes are very pricey, and frankly overpriced. What may have been wonderful in years past, hasn't been my experience. The store staff is off putting, unwelcoming, and I dare say rude. I picked up my order ( mango mousse) for a birthday celebration. I had requested candles in a certain color, and was presented candles in silver. " That's all we have" it would have been proper to let me know upfront when I placed the order, and was told " no problem". The cake was horrible. All of it. The mango flavor tasted like tin/metal. The actual cake was dry and tasted like freezer burn. It was inedible. It was also $75.00. There MUST be better bakeries that offer delicious birthday cakes in the San Francisco area. This isn't one of them.
Wonderful bakery! I've always gone in the morning- it's quiet, the staff are super helpful, and there's rarely a crowd. Cakes are abundantly decorated and beautiful, including the packaging. The strawberry shortcake is chock full of fresh strawberries and in lieu of frosting is layered with light whipped cream. Not too sweet and super moist . And unheard of post covid prices for the size of an 8" whole cake at $40!
Ordered for pick up 24 hour before. I opted for the 6 in Swedish princess cake but with ivory marzipan. The person taking my order over the phone made sure the spelling of the words and names were all correct. Pick up process was easy - walked up to the register and told them my name. This bakery does have several spots for seating. They have a little sample tray in front as well. I noticed adding lettering was an extra $2 if you do it there but it wasnt charged for mine so seems like ordering in advance is the way to go! There were still plenty of variety and sizes of cake available on display when I got there at 3pm so I would think it's possible to do last min cake pick up too Cake was nicely decorated and tasted soft and fluffy inside. Only the outside marzipan layer was sweet. Price for the princess cake here is $2-$3 more than other places in SF but considering you can opt for another color here other than green is worth it to me!

It was a rainy Monday when I was walking along Clement Street and noticed Schubert's was open. The glass cases were mostly empty, but I saw a sign for 30% off all whole cakes and slices. There was also a small sign indicating they were day-old cakes, and the cashier mentioned they're open until 2:30 PM on Mondays (they're usually closed Mondays and Tuesdays). I didn't feel like getting a cake, so I went with a Hazelnut Nutmeg Cookie ($1.10) and a Black & White Shortbread ($1.10). Both were very good and not stale, even when I ate them the next day. I especially liked the Black & White Shortbread. I would come back on a Monday--maybe next time I'll try one of the cakes at 30% off.

The cakes from the bakery is just amazingly delicious! My bf got me a couple of their mini cakes for my bday and for our anniversary and I'm so glad he did because without him I would've never found out about this gem. I'm a chocolate lover so the cakes he got was so rich and creamy while having a balance of just the right amount of sugar and nuts to give it a nice texture. We got one for my sisters bday party too and everyone LOVED it and were raving about how good the cake was it's also easy to order, we usually just call about 3 or 4 days at least in advance and they send an invoice so it's pretty quick and simple. They can write custom notes on the cake too which comes out beautifully/elegantly def great quality, would recommend to everyone! read more
I first became acquainted with Schubert's because it was the go-to place for macarons of the highest quality and of any flavor. This remains true (so if you have a hankering for macarons, this is probably the best place around for them), but since my gf and I have been watching the Great British Bake Off during the pandemic, we have become more curious about other aspects of baking (ok, I may have become more curious - she long ago mapped all the bakeries in the city). So it was for some of the treats we saw on the show that brought us to Schubert's this time. We got three desserts takeout: a Napoleon cake, a Swedish princess cake, and a chocolate mousse torte. As I will describe shortly, all three were divine. The Napoleon cake was just what it looks like, light and flaky with a creamy sweetness - nothing wrong with any of that at all. However, I was less sure what to make of the princess cake. It looked sleek and cloyingly sweet and just too pretty to be tasty - maybe like that stranger in the bar who is too good looking to also be smart and funny with a nice personality. To our delight, the princess cake was no stranger in a bar. It was light and airy with subtle sweetness and marzipan notes. To be honest (and I'm sorry), I don't have the language to capture the several subtle points of deliciousness in this little slice of heaven. It's just magical and you should try it. Introduce yourself to the (not) stranger. We were too desserted-out to eat all three things in one sitting, so we put the torte in the fridge and returned to it two days later. I expected it to bad stale and/or mushy (and/or perhaps moldy given the state of my refrigerator). Again, my expectations were shattered. The torte was still scrummy (as Mary Berry would say), a bliss of dark chocolate that despite its overly indulgent appearance was light and not overly sweet. It was like a little chocolate fairy doing ballet on my tongue. And if it did get worse over the two days since we bought it, I can't imagine how good it would have been fresh. I've been meaning to go to Schubert's for a while now because I've heard such good things! I wanted to go after I got my flu shot, but I ended up getting distracted by Toy Boat and walking straight by! That all changed when I was walking back from Golden Gate Park. I went in to Schubert's around 3:45pm on a Saturday afternoon (during COVID) and there was a small line outside. They only let in 2 guests at a time, but their pick-up window was fairly busy with people who ordered ahead. They mainly ordered large cakes ahead. I got a mini mint chocolate tart, tiramisu, and raspberry and white chocolate mousse--they were out of slices of their famous princess cake, so will need to plan ahead more and order it for a birthday or something! Everything was very good, service was helpful and friendly, and they were very safe, clean, and cautious. read more

Best bakery ever We drive 100 miles to get special occasion cakes because they don't disappoint. The cakes are beautiful & delicious. Our favorite is the swedish princess & the chocolate mousse cake. We used to love their almond tarts with apricot but they don't have them anymore or they changed them over the years. We've been going for as long as I can remember. Family tradition to get our cakes & stock up on pastries & cookies while we're here. Nice little drive over the golden gate bridge into the city. Love this bakery read more

Went here for Valentine's Day to grab a few cake slices and am now fully addicted. There are so many choices! The staff is super organized and efficient so the long line is deceivingly fast. It smells like heaven. It's a once a week staple now. read more
Love love love this place. I've tried every cake and none disappoint. Cakes are moist, flavorful, creamy, all the right adjectives. Favorites are the various fruit mousse cakes and the chocolate truffle torte, chocolate mousse with ganache and chocolate shavings. COME! Try one thing. Or several. Bought a awesome strawberry birthday cake and tons of pastries here last minute. Fast, friendly service. Tons of variety and pastry options. Order a couple days ahead if you want a special cake, luckily the strawberry shortcake was a basic cake that I could pick up last minute. They are closed on Tuesdays which is why I couldn't order a raspberry mousse or other more fancy cake. The strawberry shortcake was delicious, light, fresh and whipped cream was delightfully yummy! Can't wait for our next celebration so I can return again! :) Our favorites this visit were: Strawberry shortcake, almond croissants, custard pastry and "apple slice pastry square/rectangle? corners"! Edit 05-01-20 Current information: Schubert's Bakery re-opened effective April 29 for in-store service and takeouts. (Previously noted being curb-side service only.) Open Wednesdays - Saturdays only from 9 am - 5 pm. Open Sundays from 9 am - 4 pm; Close on Mondays and Tuesdays. You can pre-order on their website or go to the store. --- One of the best bakeries in the city. Very consistent quality and the cakes from here are really delicious. This is an old German bakery dating back to 1911 when they first opened their shop on Fillmore Street near McAllister. Later, they moved to Clement Street and has been here ever since the 1940s. Some of the favorites are cheesecakes, St. Honore, and the Swedish Princess. But really can't go wrong with any of them because they are amazing. read more

I been to thousands of places I didn't do Yelp reviews and this is one of the places I frequent and I didn't do a review for. This is one of my top places for bakery desserts in the San Francisco Bay Area . It's not a cheap place but it has great quality and great value. Must have their chocolate pastries. I also enjoy their tarts too. read more
Finally got to try this famous bakery in this area! There was already a long line when I got here, though they strictly kept the local covid-19 protocol, maximum 3 people could get into the store at a time, didn't take that much time for me to get into the store. There were lots of cake, pastry, and cookie options, honestly they all looked good, and wanted to get all of em, but anyways I got to try some of em, and they were all good! We needed something special for a going away party. Was able to stroll in just before closing on a Wednesday evening and walk out with something suitable. A fairly large selection of cakes were available, priced and sized by tiers. We got the fruit tart. It wasn't cheap. But it was excellent! Everyone raved about how delicious it was. Cost $48 but we managed to get 12 servings out of it. Service was prompt and friendly. read more

Review is only for the Swedish princess cake. Cake has well defined layers, the raspberry jam tastes great but the entire thing including the marzipan layer is way too sweet. The sugar hits you before the favors do. Would recommend for people who have major sweet tooth. read more

The best cakes in town! We got the Piña Colada and the Fuerst Puckler (Black Forest). Both were creamy & delicious, with the Piña Colada being very light and fluffy & full of coconut & pineapple flavor, while the Fuerst Puckler was very rich and full of chocolatey raspberry goodness. Ate the slices in the park with a view! Life doesn't get much better than this read more
Got this princess cake from what we've heard is the best princess cake in SF and it did not disappoint! The cake is light and not too sweet with lots of whipped cream, soft cake, and delicious jam covered in green marzipan that adds another perfect touch of sweetness to every bite! The details on the cake were also so pretty and delicate--I almost didn't want to cut into it and ruin it! Definitely top tier princess cake and I would absolutely recommend trying one if you haven't! read more

Schuberts is a staple bakery in SF. Their cakes are delicious and are my go to's for birthdays or a sweet tooth. The service is fast and the ladies inside are so nice. My favorite cake is the chocolate mousse with shavings - it's a super rich, chocolate lovers dream. All of their cakes are marvelous and there's something for everybody. If you're looking for a full sized cake, I definitely recommend ordering in advance for pick up so you can beat the crowd. read more

I ended up buying a 6 inch raspberry moose cake for $35.00. The decorations were appealing and the cake was fresh. It wasn't too sweet, and it was a little tart. read more

A Birthday is not complete in our family without a cake or fruit tart from Schubert's. My boyfriend first introduced me to this long standing bakery on Clement Street awhile ago. Their Swedish Princess cake is the best Princess cake out there. The marzipan icing is not too thick as other Princess cakes I've tried. The inside is filled with a generous amount of raspberry filling, layers of white cake, custard filling, and whipped cream. Last year, I decided to branch out from the Princess cake and bought three slices of their other cake options to figure out which to order for my Birthday. One of them was the chocolate cake with raspberry filling. It was the winner. All of the guests at my Birthday party raved about the raspberry flavor and how good the cake tasted overall. My boyfriend is not a cake fan, but loves fruit tarts. For his Birthday, I ordered a fruit tart that was piled with raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Every cake and fruit tart is decorated perfectly and include pieces of edible chocolates on the top. I highly recommend Schubert's for any of your special occasions. read more

This bakery is reliable - I think their stuff is good, but I don't feel like I would go out of my way to come here. However, it's definitely a staple in San Francisco. Growing up, I remember everyone would get their birthday cake from Schubert's. That being said, for my friend's birthday, she absolutely loves the Swedish Princess cake. I decided to order online a few weeks in advance. Ordering online was a really easy process! Their FAQ details how many people the cake would feed. Since I only needed to feed 6 people, I went with the 6". For some reason, I didn't get an email confirmation after submitting my order. I also didn't receive any reminder of when to pick up the cake. So just in case, really pay attention to the date and time you choose. On the day I was picking up, I mentioned my name and I was handed the cake I ordered. Got to give them bonus points for not rejecting my, uh, interesting text choice. My friend is right. The Swedish Princess cake is super yummy! It's very light, and not overwhelmingly sweet. Also, if you're feeding 6 people, 6" is plenty. We had a good amount of cake left over! read more

Let me first say that i hate marzipan and alwaya avoid any sweets that have it. For my birthday, my family suggested getting a cake a Schubert's and they mentioned that Schubert's princess cake is very popular. I was a bit hesitant because of my marzipan dislike but i agreed anyway because i was very curious. To our surprise, the cake tasted better than we expected! The inner layer was moist but the cake texture was not as spongie as asian cakes that are made from egg white meringue. The outer marzipan layer is sweet but not overly, and i like that it doesn't have that fake pungent almond syrup flavor or concentrate that is present in almond croissant or other marzipan sweets. The inner layer has a nice raspberry jam and whipped cream that go surprisingly well with the marizpan. Overall the cake exceeded all our family's expectation and all the seemingly clashing flavors mesh very well with each other!!! I would totally get this cake again on another special occasion. We also got a few small slices andddd to my asian people who do not like super sweet cakes, none of the cakes we tried at Schubert's, including the princess cake, are overly sweet, which is a HUGE PLUS for my family. I have tried a fair share of popular bakeries and a lot of times i was disappointed, so im very impressed with Schubert's. The price is a little high but heck, i'll take it haha. read more

I LOVE SCHUBERT'S BAKERY. THEIR CAKE IS SIMPLY DELICIOUS! Swedish princes was my dad's favorite and will always be my moms as well. They also have cheesecake and ganache cake which are good if you like chocolate and coffee! Ambiance is small, and can only sit a couple of people but it's good enough! People are always nice when I go in to pick up my cakes read more

Do they decorate your order for a baby shower?
I know they will write on a cake but I suggest you simply call them for another type of request.
Do they sell out of cakes, is it recommended to pre order?
I came in 5 minutes before closing one time and they still had 4 cakes left. If you want a specific cake it's probably best to preorder but if not, then all their cake selections are pretty good.

Perhaps not. It would be good to have a backup plan, or at least be flexible as to what type of cake. Other people might also be trying to order. Good luck!
