This is how you know it's good, when you walk into a tiny air conditioned bakery to find dozens of yellow mini cupcakes with a dollop of heavenly pink buttercream. Minis are $1.75/each and I would suggest getting one or two to eat on the spot if you're out here in the summertime, because if you plan on getting a box to go, go straight back to your car or else the buttercream will melt! Yes, there's exactly one and only one flavor -- plain vanilla yellow cake with a bright pink buttercream frosting. And the frosting is not even fancifully piped onto the cupcake. Nope, it's a plain schmear that was done with a small silicon spatula. It looks like something your mother or grandmother would make. In short, in terms of looks, it's a plain Jane cupcake. But like a John Hughes film, the plain Jane turns out to be the most beautiful one in the end. The one most worthy of the best. Scott bakes what I consider to be the most perfect cupcakes in the world. And I say this as someone who doesn't particularly like cupcakes. In one bite, I was blown away by the soft moist and delicate cake. The buttercream frosting, which I normally detest and abhor with a passion, won me over with its light and just the right amount of sweetness taste. Its on par with Magnolia Bakery (the buttercream frosting is the only redeeming thing about that overrated bakery). I polished off that cupcake and I had to be held back and dragged away from the bakery. I was addicted. That night, I dreamed of those delectable cupcakes. He offers his cupcake in two different sizes, minis and regular, to please the size of everyone's sweet tooth. His vanilla cake is always moist and it's topped with this very VERY addicting pink frosting. This frosting is unlike any I have eaten. It's flavorful but not overly sweet. You can buy just the frosting!! You also have to get it with a carton of milk it's just a perfect combination. When you are walking down commercial street you do have to look out for his flag, because his shop is small and kind of hidden...you do have to walk down a side stair/ramp. The frosting was very tasty and without it the cake was average at best. We had "Scottcakes" cupcakes last summer when this guy Scott was selling them on the street corner across from where we stay while there. We only had the chance of eating them one night, enjoyed it.... we would watch them sell out every night! I think it was just the excitement of the street because coming back this summer we were looking forward to them again, found out he had opened up a shop, tried them again and grimaced. Last summer, 2012, we got cupcakes there every time we visited Provincetown throughout the season.. There was an man out front with a big pink flag, yelling "Cupcakes !!! Cupcakes !!!! I was in Provincetown for the first time last week and picked up an order of 5 mid-week. By the end of the week, I was only disappointed by not making it back in time to pickup more. They ain't sheeeeeyit compared to Scottcakes' modest 1-flavor, 1-frosting cupcake, which made me test my pre-diabetic status twice this afternoon. Check it out: you'll see no jimmies, gummies, sparkles, or Himalayan sea salt shavings on Scottcakes. I'm not kidding! There is no chocolate in Scottcakes. No caramel drizzled on Scottcakes. Lots of dairy and gluten in Scottcakes, though, so if your stomach can't handle ordinary baked goods, go fuck off to the shitty cornmeal cakes you've trained yourself to enjoy. All you get at Scottcakes is a stripped down vanilla cake covered in a decadent pink buttercream--THAT'S IT! Scott decided: one flavor is all you're getting. No options, no substitutions, and no flavorless vegan alternatives. You want strawberry? Too bad. You want a surprise frosting in the middle? No, you don't. You have dietary restrictions? You're crazy, and stop taking yourself out to eat already...ruining food everywhere. (round of applause) Scott took away all of these excessive options and NAILED the very basic yellow cake cupcake that we all fell in love with in our younger years.
