Robotic service, nothing personable about our dining experience. We made reservations and arrived early and were seated fairly quickly. (The restaurant was not busy or full). Water was brought to the table immediately but it took about 10 min for someone to come by and ask if we were ready to order. Open kitchen concept and as we waited I watched the service staff continue a conversation as they waited for orders to be filled from the kitchen. Food was mediocre nothing to write home about. I ordered the pork chop Pasta and the pork chop was tender and juicy it has a five spice Asian flavor to it that I wasn't expecting. Escargots: Garlicky type with no cheese etc. They were cooked perfectly, not overbooked and chewy. Cajun Garlic Shrimp: Huge shrimps were seasoned nice and well. The presentation was amazing. Calentado: This was very unique and tasty. I tasted slight ginger and that worked really well in this. I wasn't sure about eggs at first but couldn't think about this dish without eggs once I ate it. Elevated comfort food done right! Scratch Kitchen has some of the most creative and delicious food in all of Hawaii! Looking at all of the amazing pics and stellar reviews online, my GF and I were eager to try this place. Taking advantage of the free parking garage around the corner, we were able to be seated very quickly. Their menu had so many great unique options clearly showing influence from many cultures while still adding that Hawaiian flare. We shared the Scratch Loco Moco, Calentado, and the Teppan Gandule Rice. The Scratch Loco Moco and Calentado were quite similar with the main difference being the Pork Adobo vs. Barbacoa respectively. However, I think the Calentado was better mostly because of the added crunchy texture from the tortilla strips. My hands down favorite was definitely the Teppan Gandule Rice with the upgraded grandma's bone-in fried pork chop. It comes on a sizzling platter with a thick, juicy, and crunchy pork chop. Plus the rice on the bottom is perfectly crispy similar to what you get with bibimbop which is so satisfying. Considering the appetizer of the pork chop costs $13 and the upgrade is only $6, this is a steal! Soft and not over cooked, light and crispy on the outside, with the red onions and ginger to cut through masarap mang. I never heard of gandule rice either, but the combination of olives and tomatoes with the hot skillet helped reduce them and got the rice crispy but not burnt it reminded me of that Chinese thing but I forget what that's called. Decided to stop by after the Saturday farmers market and wanted brunch. I heard great things and I knew I wanted to experience it for myself. I walked with my boyfriend and dog and promptly got seated outside. The sun was being down but the breeze was nice. The waitress was very sweet and tended to us as the only couple outside. I got the spicy Bloody Mary and it was awesome, as well as the espresso martini - which is not creamy and I enjoyed that. The popcorn chicken was the biggest disappointment. It was mostly breading/ no chicken and for $13, what a waste of money. The bacon mac and cheese was just okay. Not very cheesy, tastes more like an Alfredo pasta with sprinkled cheese on top. It was for my daughter and she ate it so I guess I can't complain too much. The apple bacon burger was cooked perfectly for how I asked but man.. it lacked so much flavor. I couldn't tell that it had apple or honey aioli or any of the flavors it said on the menu. I've been to Scratch Kitchen several times and the food and service are a always great! Not sure what was going on this past Saturday and Sunday because my hubs and I went two times in a row (they're just that good and their menu offers that much variety). Sad to say, out of all the times that we've frequented this restaurant, the servers/waiters have always been friendly and warm but this weekend the service was a tad lackluster and the waiters were pretty forgetful. Between requesting more water, straws, an extra plate or syrup--they simply kept forgetting. For one server to be absent minded/busy is one thing, but all three? It was interesting. My husband and I started to wonder if the staff was in transition or if something was going on because the energy was a little weird and funky. I made two requests and each time I looked up, the waitress was in a corner drinking water or something out of a plastic cup, with a straw. That wasn't the best look. The pet peeve of them all was placing our starters and entree at the same time and having our entrees coming out before our starter. That was over-the-top annoying. As I said, we went on Saturday, sat down, and was asked for our full order immediately, and with barely anytime to look over the menu like normal. We ended up placing our starters and the waitress proceeds to ask if we'd like to place our main entree also. The hubs and I looked at each other like we were feeling rushed, but went ahead and placed our entrees assuming that they'd bring the starters out first because that's normally how it goes, but not Saturday. My chicken and waffle came out before my garlic shrimp, and after two bites, here came my starter, and if anyone has ever ordered a waffle, you know that you're on a time schedule because they cool off fairly quickly. At this point, I have to flip a coin about what I want to get cold because I have everything at once. The hubs and I said to each other, "we wouldn't have ordered starters if they were just going to bring them out after/at the same time-- what's the point?" That said, Saturday's experience was annoying. As for Sunday, the same thing, they rushed us about placing our entrees with the starters-- I had to tell them what transpired the day prior and that we want our starters to arrive before the main entree and with time to eat them. One waiter said, "okay, let me check." I'm thinking, you have to check if the appetizers can come out before the main entree? Then, the next waitress came over asking the same question, "are we ready to place our main entree?" We still haven't gotten our drinks or our appetizers. Why are we rushing? The restaurant isn't packed and there are a couple of empty tables, so I'm confused. At this point, I'm feeling a little irritation with the fact that we're feeling rushed. We look around to make sure there were some open tables, and there were, so stop rushing us. We've been sitting in the restaurant for less than 10 minutes, so why the rush? I could add more but you catch the drift. Their food and atmosphere is always great, but the service needs to tighten up. If I'm ranking just the service, I'm rating with a 2.5, at best, this go around. Ranking in food: always a 5! I would always give Scratch a 5 but the service wasn't on top this weekend. I'm supposed to take my bestie next week when she comes into town, so crossing my fingers that the service will be better, and I can rate them a five instead of a 4. read more

The 3 of us had dinner on a Thursday night with reservation. We were seated promptly. I assume we're the first round for dinner as the restaurant was only half full. It filled up quickly after us so you'll def need reservations. The restaurant was clean and atmosphere was lively. Spacing was nice and felt very spacious even though the table next to us was less than 2 feet away. Chili fries were served first and was just slightly spicy. It was fresh and chili was meaty. My pink pasta was served next which was served very hot which I love. It was excellent and as I later found, the best dish of the we ordered. Street Tacos came out next and as we later found was a mix up. We ordered barbacoa but we're octopus. Though not bad, I thought meat was over seasoned. The last dish which was served barely warm was the Pork belly apple pasta. Of the 3, this was the worse entree. We weren't sure if it was because it was cold but the flavor was minimal and the meat was a bit too fatty. I'd it wasn't for how good the pink pasta was, this would be a 3 star. It's been years since I have returned to Scratch (mostly due to the pandemic). I recently came for brunch and had a great time! Like most brunch places, they don't take reservations. The wait was about 30 minutes for brunch on a Monday so not too bad. I like that they text when your table is ready so you can walk around while you wait. I got their braised pork belly benny and asked for crispy smashed potatoes in place of the salad. This was excellent! Everything on the plate was executed perfectly. ok, a few things you need to know and they are: 1. my office is within walking distance of this establishment 2, this was my SECOND visit since the opening of Scratch. That said, my first visit was during the infancy days and it was for breakfast. I was not impressed by them resulting in absence or lack of desire to dine at this establishment. My recent visit however came about because it was in close proximity of my office and sad to say, my first two choices were closed for their dinner service (maybe this was a good thing, affording me the opportunity to dine at Scratch after my long LONG hiatus). So about Scratch- the service was excellent. The ambiance was "ok". They have tables and they have benches; like cafeteria style dining with maybe 10-12 on the table. The food and it was off the dinner menu was fine. We had the deviled eggs appetizer (last one according to our server- and it was only 5 pm. go figure) brussel sprouts prepared pan fried then oven baked or so it seemed (it was the best for the evening, IMHO), I had the mahi and chips and my dining partner had the pork chops. I will admit the pork chops looked delicious and was told that in fact, it was delicious. I would more than likely dine here again (for dinner) mainly because of my close proximity and my restored faith in their menu. I will go back to try the pork chops..... Was looking for a breakfast place in town after taking family pics on a Sunday morning and Scratch Kitchen popped up being right around the corner from Ala Moana Beach park. Had great reviews and the pics of the food looked amazing. Had to wait 15 min to be seated so that the kitchen wasn't overwhelmed, but the text message alert was on point. The menu had a lot of unique combinations and we were in for a treat. The kids shared the Milk and Cereal pancakes. 4 pancakes stacked high. Light and fluffy and topped with fruity pebbles, frosted flakes, strawberries and "milk" syrup. My kids loved it and said it was delicious. Husband had the pork adobo loco moco with garlic rice and sunny side eggs. It was flavorful, fresh and filling. He was getting full halfway through. I am a big fan of savory grits and opted for the shrimp amd sausage grits. The smokiness of the sausage, large perfectly seasoned shrimp and sunny side eggs oozing into the grits made this one tasty meal. Washed it down with a guava mimosa. At this point, I think I've tried majority of the dishes at Scratch Kitchen. On my most recent visit, I learned about the glorious dishes that are the Brulee'd French Toast and Pinky Pasta. The Brulee'd French Toast features three thick, soft and fluffy pieces that have a thin caramelized layer so as to not make it too sweet or too hard. Each bite was heavenly and the longer it sat in the syrup that we drenched it in, the better it got. The Pinky Pasta ($27) was a mentaiko pasta with a slab of white fish on top. The pasta was so insanely rich and creamy with a generous portion of mentaiko in it. A bit pricey but worth every penny. We also got the South Shore Cobb Salad ($18) which had lots of flavors coming from the grilled shrimp, bacon and fried deviled eggs. I loved that they use cheddar instead of bleu cheese for this salad. the Country Gravy Fried Chicken Biscuit ($22) featured two of their housemade, buttery, flavorful scallion biscuits, a thick & juicy fried chicken slathered in gravy. to top it off, there's a side of fried kale that's absolutely to die for. read more

3.5 stars! Scratch kitchen was so different from what I was expecting. The first thing I noticed was that their menu is huge and has such a wide range of variety and cuisines and options that it was difficult for our table to make order choices. I ended up getting the pork adobo rice dish and tried some of my friends orders including the south fried chicken and waffles, chilaquiles, and brûléed French toast. All of our orders were HUGE. The portion size for any order made more sense for two people to me! My adobo rice dish was good but it definitely didn't taste like a standard adobo. The gravy on the pork was actually sweet more than anything else, and I couldn't taste and vinegar or acidity in the dish. The pork was tender and the ingredients seemed fresh, but I didn't feel like it should have been called pork adobo. Additionally, the garlic rice on the bottom looked like it had garlic but tasted nothing of garlic which was confusing-- could have used canned minced garlic rather than fresh garlic. As for the other dishes, my reaction to each was "eh it's good". The exception is the bruleed french toast. I thought that one was pretty unique and delicious but I couldn't imagine eaten a whole order of that myself. In the end, the large portions did make the cost worth it. read more

It's been awhile, but we came spontaneously for lunch and glad that we did! No wait at 12:30p now that summer vacation's over for most. My got her usual Scratch fav burger this time featuring "smash potatoes" that she absolutely loved! She described it like having potato skins, soft on inside and super good. In fact, she practically finished them all before even touching her burger, hence only able to eat half of it. I chose beef ribs plate for 1st time. Was deciding between "small dish" for $16 vs plate for $22. Chose plate thinking ribS, but sadly only 1 rib. Having said that, the rib was large and with lots of tender fall-off-the-bone meat and was delicious. With all the sides that comes with the plate, for sure you will be filled up, but just be aware...just 1 rib. Baked beans/refried bbq-styled was terrific with smoky flavor on the sweet side. "corn salad" was also a pleasant surprise, flavorful, almost a corn variation of mac salad tbh. passed on the slaw only because I'm allergic to raw carrots, but not a slaw fan regardless. Chose french fries option - these type of fries are my FAVORITE. On the slightly thicker/bigger side and slightly battered then deep fried, super good and tasty! Maybe the small plate is just the 1 rib idk (I didn't ask). $22 is a decent deal for the whole plate, so as long as I know what to expect, I'm satisfied. For sure I was full! Last but not least, this is neither criticism nor praise, but this is the first time we've seen a "Kitchen staff service charge" of 4%, which came out to a little over $2. Obviously, in the past/traditionally the waitstaff would split a share of their tips to the kitchen staff as I had done as a waiter in my past life. And I truly appreciate the waitstaff trying to earn a living off tips, especially in the higher cost of living like here in Hawaii. So I didn't take that into account when tipping our waitress, and I'm always on the generous side because of my past life, much to my wife's objections sometimes. Walked here from the beach for brunch! Very easy to find, got seated immediately on a Saturday morning at peak brunch time! Staff worked really hard, got us waters immediately and took our orders immediately as well. Really cool industrial ish vibe open space inside with a good amount of seating! Ordered the pork belly Benny which was smashing! Pork belly crisped to perfection on top of an English muffin with avocado, hollandaise with poached egg. It came with a side salad with the choice of three dressings. Love the fun twist on an eggs Benedict. My boyfriend got the chicken and waffles which he loved! Unfortunately their espresso machine was down but no biggie. They also had a lot of awesome cocktails! Good vibes, great service, awesome brunch - and dog friendly!
