Food is amazing here, loved everything!! From the moment we walked in we were instantly greeted. We ordered several plates and all came out in a timely matter. The pork adobo tacos and deviled eggs was so good, we also had chicken and waffles, French toast, and eggs Benedict! Everything was phenomenal. I love how clean and open the restaurant is. As frequent patrons to local restaurants, with many options, we won't be returning to Scratch Kitchen. We walked-in on an early Sat. eve; the restaurant was empty, but we were ignored at the door. No greeting, no inquiry about number in our party. When an employee finally acknowledged us, we were seated, given menus and waited to order. Food servers stood around the counter & were inattentive throughout the evening. When we needed anything else, we tried to flag down the wait-help, but again were ignored. We finally left and went to the restaurant across the street. Training on customer service & scanning the crowd might be a simple yet beneficial improvement. read more

Two years later and I am back. Instill love this place. I had the Scratch 75 to start my evening and for my meal I ordered calentado. It was excellent. Like a Spanish version of Loco mock but with savory shredded beef. My egg cooked the way I like it, jammy, on top of garlic rice. Perfect. I devoured it. I sat outside and enjoyed the fresh air. The staff was super friendly. After being served they didn't come back to check on me until I was finished eating and I am a slow eater. I definitely will be back. This modern American eatery with Southern-inspired fare is located on the ground level of the South Shore Market in Ala Moana. You can park in the structure and walk over to the suite which faces Queen St. Reservations can be made using OpenTable, however they have a policy that everyone in a party must be present before it can be seated. Our bunch had nine people with stragglers so we were fortunate a large table was still available when all had arrived. The inside was at about 3/4 capacity at the time of our visit. The brunch menu was comprised of a mix of Southern dishes and unique takes on local island food. You could get an item like Creole Shrimp N' Sausage Grits for the former or Scratch Loco Moco for the latter. I chose the Calentado for my meal which was made up of beef barbacoa, two sunny island eggs, garlic rice, chimichurri, tortilla strips, and roasted cherry tomatoes. At first, the server told me the beef was unavailable but could be substituted with braised pork. Upon double checking with the kitchen, the barbacoa was still in stock. The eggs and meat sat on the bed of rice. Scallions and the tortilla strips were spread on top and covered everything. The mix resembled a hash but with rice substituting for potatoes as the starch. The Calentado wasn't the prettiest looking dish yet it had well-balanced flavors. read more

Came with a bunch of friends for breakfast. The menu is sort of a modern twist on local food, not too much out of the box, but enough to keep it interesting. I got the Scratch loco moco with pork adobo, there were options for the traditional kind with beef patty, pork adobo or chili. I don't know why I chose pork adobo, I don't really like it when its too vinegary. But it was different and the waitress assured me that it was more sweet than vinegary. She was right, it wasn't vinegary so I liked it. It comes with garlic rice which I didn't find too garlicky but that's my complaint with all garlic rice. The pork adobo was tasty and as a whole I liked the dish it was fresher with the cherry tomatoes. It didn't come covered with gravy as a normal loco moco does, my friend who ordered the traditional one had gravy. I guess gravy would have masked the flavor of the pork adobo, so I get it. I also ordered crispy smashed potatoes with cajun seasoning. They were nicely flavored and had a crisp outside, I just wish they were smashed a bit more. Overall I can see the quality and precision in the preparation of the food. Service was friendly, informative and attentive. Parking was free at South Shore Market at Ward Villages. Seating is somewhat limited so they did not seat us until our whole party had arrived. They share a kitchen with Lemon Supply so you can order Lemon Supply drinks from inside and also discounted refills of your mason jars if you have them from Lemon Supply. I think I'd go for the traditional loco moco, roasted mushroom and grits, scratch chili fries, or lilikoi BBQ pork ribs with a side of rice next time, IDK, so many good options. read more

My dish is called Grandma's Pork Chop Pasta. The pork chop is served over a bed of pasta. The chop had a slight glaze, and the meat was tender. I'm normally a salt and pepper guy when it comes to fried chops. This glaze was very tasty. The pasta was cooked perfectly, it was the sauce lacking in the butter garlic flavor. Even though it was served with a spoon, there was no sauce to scoop up. The service overall was very good. All the food is prepared fresh. I came here for a late breakfast with a friend of mine. I've heard of scratch but never had the chance to go. They're nestled on the outside of Ward park in the TJ Maxx lot. We got there about an hour after they opened. Wasn't crazy busy but our wait was about 30 minutes. Lots to do in the area. Not a big deal. We get the text to come back. We got seated at the bar area. We ordered popcorn chicken to start. Yes, popcorn chicken. It's really good! I had ordered their loco moco with pork adobo. It was so good! I also ordered pancakes which came with fruits, cereal, and...oh, yeah, 4 thick pancakes. It was so good but I couldn't eat it all. My friend had ordered the pork belly pasta. She was kind enough to share. After I had a bite, I don't think I'd be as willing to part with a single taste! So good! Our waitress, Jasmine, was very good. A perfect balance of check in and leave us alone. Water was always filled, food was brought to us quickly, took good care of us. My friend had said this would be a good first date place. Food wise, I agree. I think it's unique enough to be an interesting date. What stops me would be the noise level. It can be a bit noisy inside. I'd imagine once it gets pumping, it's much louder. It's a nice location, based off of a main road. The staff was nice and we were seated in a timely manner. I always get a Benny if its on the menu and when I saw "pork belly" I was extra excited. One of the amazing characteristics of places like this is their personal approach to something that every restaurant serves. I had the Scratch version of Loco Moco with two eggs sunny and it was super delicious. The pork was tender and the sauce was delicately sweet that married well with the burst off egg all over. Definably one of the best I've had on island. Even for a Sunday brunch the service was fast and very helpful which paired nicely with a smile. Finally got to try this place! The wait was not bad at all and we went at 10 AM. We got to try the bone marrow, chilaquiles, calentado, French toast, and scratch burger. Chilaquiles was pretty good. The chicken was the best part to be honest. And the calentado was "a greasy loco moco". My friends enjoyed the French toast and the burger was delicious. But the bone marrow!!! We went to Scratch Kitchen for brunch to celebrate a friend's birthday and unfortunately had a really disappointing experience due to the rude customer service. The hostess, who was also our server, was unfriendly from the start. She gave us a wait time of 30-45 minutes, which we said was fine, but repeatedly asked if our whole party was present--even after I confirmed multiple times that yes, everyone was there. Once we were finally seated, she made us feel rushed while ordering, and when it came time to cash out, she abruptly dropped the bill and announced that 20% gratuity was added because our party was 6+. I wouldn't have minded since that's standard policy, but the way it was delivered came across as rude and money-driven, especially considering that three of the seven were kids. To top it off, after I paid, I noticed that a canceled item was still left on our tab, so they had to void and recharge my card. Came here with friends for a Sunday brunch (mid-June). We decided late and no morning reservations were available. The only two requirements for an eatery my friends had were: parking and AC. The service could have been a bit better as they don't take reservations for brunch and it said first come, first serve so I showed up ahead of time for my party, but was told that I had to wait for my entire party before they could seat me. It was beginning to get busy and we were sat in an area closest to the window and next to a bunch of high chairs that a family used as storage for their car seat. This is a convenient little diner style restaurant in the South Shore Marketplace of Ward Village. They have indoor and a small outdoor seating area. The menu offers something for everyone, from salads to meat and seafood dishes. We had a really the dawn patrol salad which was very good, comes with a balsamic dressing on the side. Also, the country gravy fried chicken biscuit was very good. The only issue we had on this visit was that they were out of a lot, like really a lot, of things. We roll with it, so it was fine, but it was a little shocking so much was unavailable. Although they are very popular for their breakfast/brunch selection, I do like their diner menu because it's not complicated, but has wonderful flavors and is made to order. The service is very friendly and I feel, unlike some other places, there is enough wait staff to accommodate customers. I had been to Scratch several years ago but just for brunch. This was the first time I went for dinner. Looking for something on the lighter side (we had just eaten nonstop for the holidays), I chose the dawn patrol salad. It was nice and light and the perfect salad for what I was craving. The only downside of the salad was the cheese crisp as it wasn't crispy. The restaurant was really empty so perhaps these were prepared in advance and left out. A quick toast would've hopefully crisped this up! We also had the pretty boy wrap - a vegetarian wrap that came with smashed potatoes. Both were good and very tasty. Lots of free parking in the Ward Village parking structures - Scratch is located at the (I think it's called) South Short Market shops. It's a little tricky as the entrance is not in the mall, but you'll need to exit on the opposite end (side closer to Tango) and go towards your left. read more

Scratch Kitchen is always a favorite place for my friends and I to go to whenever we're craving brunch food. The location is super convenient and there's lots of parking at south shore market! Our go tos are the milk and cereal pancakes and smashed potatoes. The milk and cereal pancakes were good as it wasn't too much on the sweet side and the sauce that came with it was so good - it had the perfect balance of creamy milky flavor almost like a thicker not as sweet version of condensed milk. Love drenching the pancakes with that sauce. The smashed potatoes weren't as crispy this time around but it had good flavor. We got the Brussels sprouts and they were cooked perfectly. It had a good amount of char and crispiness without any of that bitter flavor. We were surprised at how good it was. We also had the chili cheese fries! They were a good sharing dish and the jalapeños gave it a nice kick. Robotic service, nothing personable about our dining experience. We made reservations and arrived early and were seated fairly quickly. (The restaurant was not busy or full). Water was brought to the table immediately but it took about 10 min for someone to come by and ask if we were ready to order. Open kitchen concept and as we waited I watched the service staff continue a conversation as they waited for orders to be filled from the kitchen. Food was mediocre nothing to write home about. I ordered the pork chop Pasta and the pork chop was tender and juicy it has a five spice Asian flavor to it that I wasn't expecting. The rosemary smashed potatoes were the best part of the meal that came with my husband's burger that contained spinach instead of lettuce. Elevated comfort food done right! Scratch Kitchen has some of the most creative and delicious food in all of Hawaii! Looking at all of the amazing pics and stellar reviews online, my GF and I were eager to try this place. Taking advantage of the free parking garage around the corner, we were able to be seated very quickly. Their menu had so many great unique options clearly showing influence from many cultures while still adding that Hawaiian flare. We shared the Scratch Loco Moco, Calentado, and the Teppan Gandule Rice. The Scratch Loco Moco and Calentado were quite similar with the main difference being the Pork Adobo vs. Barbacoa respectively. However, I think the Calentado was better mostly because of the added crunchy texture from the tortilla strips. My hands down favorite was definitely the Teppan Gandule Rice with the upgraded grandma's bone-in fried pork chop. It comes on a sizzling platter with a thick, juicy, and crunchy pork chop. Plus the rice on the bottom is perfectly crispy similar to what you get with bibimbop which is so satisfying. Considering the appetizer of the pork chop costs $13 and the upgrade is only $6, this is a steal!
