Food (5/5): I had Momma's Pork Chop pasta and my boyfriend had the Shrimp and Grits. The pork chop was tender, juicy, and crispy all at the same time. I didn't have to work too hard to get the pork chop off the bone. There was also a generous amount of pork chops that I couldn't finish it all. The sweet and salty of the pork chops were balanced out by the acidity of the sauce. Of course the pasta was a nice al dente. I didn't have the opportunity to try all of the Shrimp N Grits together, but let me tell you, the SAUCE. Wow. I lived in the south for a little and this reminded me of my time there. Service (5/5): Friendly wait staff and the food came out quickly too! I love sitting at bars or anywhere near where chefs make food and you can tell they were really tearing it up in the kitchen! Ambiance (5/5): The setting is reminiscent of a country home kitchen and a professional one. The space is well... spacious and it's the perfect place for groups and families! Scratch kitchen is definitely unique and a good atmosphere inside. The milk and cereal pancakes are good but definitely too much for one sitting. I think it would be nice if they had more fresh fruit or "syrup" with them to balance out the thick pancakes. The chicken and waffles weren't bad but the chicken left something to be desired in terms of seasoning and flavor. The service was also quite slow. Parking is easy at this location in which you park at the Nordstrom rack and TJ Max parking structure. Their restroom is a little confusing when leaving it and would like more signs. The fact that this place has so many great reviews and did come recommended by a friend makes me think we must have just gone on a really off night. We made a reservation for a large party and were told we all needed to be there to be seated, otherwise the table would be given away within 5 minutes. We all made an effort to be there early and were seated. When we walked in, we were asked for our vaccination cards, but we had the baby with us, and she said we can get settled first, since we had our hands full. We got settled and got our cards and IDs out and kept trying to show it to her when she walked past, but she never actually checked, so after about 15 minutes, we gave up and put it away. Our drink orders were taken and brought to us after about 20 minutes which was fine. Then came the really terrible part. We waited for over an hour for our food order to be taken. I wish I was exaggerating. There were literally people who came in, ordered, ate, paid and left before our food order was even taken. It was appallingly long especially after being threatened to give away our reservation after 5 minutes. We had children with us that were getting really fussy. After we finally flagged her down to take our order, she did apologize and say she "meant to check on us sooner, but people kept coming in." She was the host and our waitress, which I'm sure is difficult but still unacceptable in my opinion. She was very nice, but waiting an hour for our order to be taken is ridiculous. Once the food order was placed, I felt like the food took forever. My husband said it didn't, but at that point I was probably just hangry and impatient, like the kids. We were so worried about the service, that literally as soon as our food came to the table, we asked for the check. We had a baby with us, and if the food order took that long, and then we waited till we were done eating to ask for the check, who knows how long the check would take! We were able to pay before we were done eating, and therefore leave right away, which was over 2 hours after we sat down. The food itself was excellent, and I really enjoyed it. If the service were better, this would definitely go up in stars, and although our experience this time was terrible, I'd be open to trying Scratch again due to all the good reviews and recommendations. I'm not sure what happened to the review I did on Scratch Kitchen before, but anyway, let's get this review going. Started the dinner off with a apple bacon old fashion. The bacon paired well with the whiskey. In my opinion, the drink was missing aroma bitter and simple syrup. I dove right in on the bone marrow and escargot dish. Bone Marrow was light and not as rich as others I've tried. The escargot was cooked in its traditional butter garlic sauce. The dish was perfectly paired with the lightly toasted baguette. I also wanted to try their street taco, I ordered it with steak for $2 more. Nothing special here. I will note that the steak was tender. If I had to guess they used a tri-tip for the steak. Main Dish: Creole style shrimp and grits. Shrimp was very tender and not over cooked. Dish comes with sausage and 2 eggs made to order. Dish was very tasty. I added the escargot dripping to see if it made a difference, It did. Adding the escargot dripping made the dish a lot more creamy. I definitely recommend this to anyone who hasn't tried this place. Always a go to when in the ward area. The food is always so tasty and delicious. We usually always get the milk n cereal pancakes to share. I've only been for brunch but definitely want to go back for dinner. The egg benedict is super yummy and always a safe choice. The pork adobo loco moco is hefty and can definitely be shared amongst two people. I tried the pretty boy wrap and was not a fan so I would say pass. My friend loved her chicken n waffles and it was huge! There's lots of parking in the area and even if wait times are long you can walk around as they'll text you when your table is ready. Darcie I. had an appointment at Kaiser at 2pm, so we were looking for a light lunch. I love MW, but she doesn't. CPK was out of the question, so we looked at Yelp. We thought this might be an interesting try and something for a Yelp review. Parking was in the Ward Village parking lot. Even though it was Christmas time, we found parking pretty quickly. Walked into the mall and found the directory. Scratch is on the Diamond Head side outside across from the park. In the front, there is a sign that has a doggie bowl. The restaurant itself is not doggie friendly, but there is outdoor seating if you want to dine with your pet. Inside is very spacious with an open cooking area. We were asked if we had reservations which we didn't. However, they were able to seat us fairly quickly after COVID check and filling out contact tracing. We ordered a few items off the menu: Garlic shrimp with extra garlic - not bad, but too much lemon for me. There was tons of garlic since we asked. Brussel sprouts - I always make mine curved side down, but I think these were flat side down which made is nice and crispy. I might try cooking them this way next time. It was yummy, and lightly spiced. Fried Deviled eggs - with Jalepeno. Cut them in half and eat them slowly. Inside temperature is hot! Cobb Salad - I ended up not eating it because it had Kale. The only reason I ordered it was because they had no Ahi for the blackened Ahi salad. Bone Marrow - We had no issues with the marrow. Only that we asked for two small bones (for the two doggies), but they only had large bones. Luckily, they gave us the leftover bone from the table next to us. No jealous doggies for us! As a WFPB eater I research menus before I go places. Scratch Kitchen's menu on their website linked from Yelp showed the Pretty Boy wrap with beans, avocado, greens, salsa, and few more yummy sounding things. I shared the menu link with the friend joining me and she thought it looked good. When we got there we were seated quickly and handed menus. Neither of us could find the items we liked on the online menu. When the waitress came back we asked and she said "Oh, that's an old menu." Then she offered to withhold bacon or other meats from menu selections. I ended up just ordering the Caesar Salad, which was okay, nothing special tho. My friend ordered the Chef's special Chicken sandwich. Part way through she noticed it wasn't fully cooked with some raw meat in the middle. 5 stars all around! from service to food to and just the all around atmosphere scratch kitchen did not skip a beat. Based of our dinner experience this will become a family regular for sure. As we're approaching 21 straight days of eating out we're starting to get bored there's been a few really good places but honestly not too many where we can see ourselves going back over. But last night was one of those times where everything was just so good. We started with appetizers- first we went with the deep fried deviled eggs, and the escargot. Both appetizers were truly mouth watering good. I think though we loved both but the escargot was the highlight of the night the sauce it came in was indescribably amazing. But don't get me wrong the deviled eggs held their weight and were delicious as well. For dinner they had a special Mac and cheese with bacon that wasn't on the menu so we had to order that for the toddler, then for my middle son we got some tacos from the appetizer menu because they don't have a kids menu but that's totally fine I rather have my kids get good food than the usual watered down kids meals, now our oldest went with the lilikoi short ribs that came with potatoes and corn on the Cobb( enough for 2 meals for sure) and he loved it. Honestly all of the kids food choices were amazing. The tacos were a huge portion and the Mac and cheese- it was creamy, delicious and had thick cut pieces of bacon. My husband ordered the country fried chicken and biscuits with fried kale where I ordered I forgot but a kale salad that came with all the fixings from a fried egg to avocado, tomatoes, cheese, bacon and I added shrimp. Everything was divine. We also had ordered a few of their lemonades there were so many unique flavors and all so good. What set this experience over the top was our waitress and the hostess as well. Both continued to ensure our dinner was not only running smoothly but everything tasted good. We got here at the right time shortly before 6 we were seated immediately but as our dinner continued they did get quite busy but it never impacted their service. I ate here last week Sunday with my cousins for a Christmas get together. It was no problem making reservations and they were very accommodating to fit two strollers and a high chair. I made sure to make the reservation for 5:30 so we made it in time for happy hour which is a great deal on food and drinks! Service: The service was excellent throughout the entire evening. Water refilled often and multiple servers checked on us as we ate and drank. Food: Scratch nuggets- These homemade chicken nuggets with homemade sauces were delicious! We ordered another one because they were so good! Loved the ranch dipping sauce. Rosemary fries- Who doesn't love French fries? But with the added rosemary these were awesome! So tasty and came with homemade ketchup. Salt & vinegar fries- I love salt and vinegar anything, so this was a must to try. It was the perfect blend of salt and vinegar! So yummy! Brussels sprouts- Loved the shoyu sauce on the Brussels sprouts! And it came with chunks of thick bacon. Mushroom fettuccine- So good! The cream sauce was very light and had a nice variety of mushrooms. I would definitely order this again. Overall, we had great service and great food! I have to start off my review with an apology to the owner. A girlfriend who I haven't seen for awhile met here for lunch on a fairly busy Friday. Got seated immediately and was waited on right away. We received our food quickly, ate our meal, then occupied the table for one and a half hours. Yes, I'm one of those Ladies Who Lunch. The type that linger at the table and drink water when the meal is long consumed, and plates and utensils are removed. The tables next to us turned over twice and we were still there. The restaurant staff was exceptional. Never rushing us to hurry along or giving hints to leave. Bottom line is, this is the kind of place where you can enjoy a good meal, catch up on the latest with a longtime friend, and not feel pressured to leave. And I'm sorry Mr. Owner, for taking up valuable table space. By the way, both the pork belly pasta and pork belly benny were delish! I really enjoyed my spicy chicken and waffles. The chicken wasn't overly spicy and for me that's a good thing. The chicken was crunchy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. My husband's favorite dish was the Cider Braised Pork Belly & Apple Pasta. The pork belly was so tasty and melted in your mouth. My son's favorite was probably the Lilikoi BBQ Pork Ribs. In my opinion, it was good and moist, but I'm from Texas so my BBQ expectations are super high and this was about average. The least memorable dish was the Crispy Smashed Potatoes. I personally would pass on this item. The seasonal veggies were a nice medley of Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, broccoli and mushrooms. We waited for 45 minutes for our food without a waitress acknowledging us and informing us about the "delay" due to a take out rush.. it's funny that the couple who sat next to us got their orders taken almost immediately and got their items within 20 minutes. I have been meaning to come here since their Chinatown days (that spot is now occupied by Opal Thai), but never had a chance until they moved to South Shore Market. I've heard that the owner of Scratch Kitchen is the son of the owners of another favorite of mine, Little Village Noodle House in Chinatown! The menu changes by season to make guests want to return. Still, they have mainstays such as the Milk and Cereal Pancakes. These pancakes are so sweet and people with sweet tooth may enjoy them more. You can choose between Fruity Pebbles or Frosted Flakes as the cereal topping; I opted for the former. The pancakes are best eaten when freshly made as they'll dry up as leftovers, and the "heavy cream" syrup will dry up as well. Surprisingly, my favorites were the savory dishes! I enjoyed the Creole Shrimp n' Grits and the Cider Braised Pork Belly and Apple Pasta. The BC Burger and Haupia Creme Brulee French Toast (both from the brunch menu, Spring 2018) were delicious as well. Scratch Kitchen is extremely popular, yet they only take dinner reservations. Here's a pro tip: put your party's name down, spend that 45-minute wait time shopping at TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack, and return to Scratch once you receive a text that your table is ready! Also, try to dine there before 12 noon. Once time, the waiting list was closed three hours before lunch closing time. Yet another time, Scratch suddenly slowed down after 12. Everything was packed neatly and the pancakes were fluffy, not dry at all. I didn't care for the "milk" syrup, so I ate the pancakes without it and it was still great. This is a fancy breakfast place; fancy food without the fancy prices. We came on a Wednesday morning, around 10am, and there was no wait. From how the dishes were presented, they seemed to be distinguishing themselves from a neighborhood breakfast place, going for the upscale feel. We got the following dishes: Creole Shrimp N' Sauage- very good grits with 3 large unpeeled juicy shrimp and slices of sausage on top. Delicious, creamy and slightly spicy. But it made me sweat so much afterwards. This is more of a winter dish. Be sure to grab a few napkins to wipe off sweat after this dish. Warm Brussels side dish- it cames in a small bowl, the Brussel sprout were nicely charred with cheese on top, more salty than necessary, but still acceptable. Just drink lots of water with it. Milk N' Cereal Pancakes- Disappointing! I hesitate to order this at first, but was convinced once the server said "everyone likes it". It is disappointing because the pancakes are thick, dry, and hard to swallow; it was like eating chalk. Even after pouring a small bottle of milk on top, most of the pancakes are still dry. It look pretty when it arrived on the table, but once tasted, it was disappointing, especially paying a $12 dollars expensive price for these dry pancakes. The pancakes at Eggs and Things and Over Easy were much better and cheaper. We also encountered several annoyances while eating at Scratch. The chairs were heavy and made very loud sound every time someone dragged them. We sat down at our table first, and afterwards, 5 people sat down at the table next to us, and every single person dragged their chair multiple times to get into their chairs. Every time these heavy chairs were dragged, the loud screeching noise made us stop our conversation because it was so loud and uncomfortable. So loud that it is disturbing. Maybe instead of calling this restaurant "Stretch", they should call it "Screech." In addition, many people bring their kids here, and they would turn on their phones with sound to entertain their kids, regardless of other people who would like to enjoy their meal without listening to the sound of other people's phone sounds. This might not be the restaurant's fault, but the restaurent should do something to stop selfish customers from disturbing other customer from having an enjoyable meal. What would happen if everything plays movies loud in the restaurent? They should have a baby/kids section. I would avoid weekend to come to this place as the air will be an hour or more. read more

After having Scratch bookmarked for just about forever, we finally had the chance to check it out this past weekend for brunch. I had my husband drop me off while he found parking, as I was anticipating a long wait, but much to my delight, I was seated right away. We were given a table right in front of the kitchen (it's an open-concept kitchen), so we were able to marvel at the different items coming out before they were delivered to guests. I thought I read online that they had mimosas, but their beverage menu only had non-alcoholic beverages. I had a chamomile tea and waited for my husband to join me. He came shortly thereafter. Then the anxiety-provoking part of our meal came - trying to choose what to order from the yummy-sounding menu! We opted for the milk and cereal pancakes to share, he ordered the classic breakfast with eggs, bacon and salad, and I had the chilaquiles. The pancakes came out first. There was nothing special about the pancakes themselves - they weren't exceptionally fluffy or flavorful. They were topped with fruity pebbles (my hubby's favorite) and served with "milk" syrup and berries. The pancakes were good, but nothing too much more than a statement or Instagram post. They weren't extremely delicious, but they did have a pleasant taste. Next time, we'd opt for the French toast. My husband's breakfast was good, but again, nothing special. The standout was the thick-cut bacon. The star of the meal was the chilaquiles. It was spicy, rich with flavor and texture, and scrumptious. My husband said if he came back, he'd order that next time. Service was meh. Our server didn't have much personality and didn't check on us after our food arrived. In general, we thought the restaurant lacked personality in general. I don't think either of us saw the kitchen staff laugh or smile once at each other. In fact, the cooks/chefs barely even spoke to one another! There was no art on the wall. Everything is kind of minimalistic and a tad bit boring. That being said, the food is executed well, and I think it pays to go for the more inventive dishes here. Next time, I'd be willing to try the chicken and waffles. Finally got the time to try this place out and they did not disappoint!! I sure definitely will be back for breakfast! Highly recommend coming around the time they open because they do get busy and sometimes the wait can be about 25-35 minutes. The Ambiance is beautiful. Limited seating when it gets busy but we did not feel crowded at all. We came about 20 minutes after they have opened(9AM Opening) and got seated right away. I believe on weekends they are much busier and they do open around 7:30Am. We ordered the Milk & Cereal Pancakes which tasted delicious! It wasn't too sweet and it came with Strawberries, Bananas and Blue Berries. I ordered the the Pork Adobo Loco Moco and it wasn't too bad. I would love to try something else the next time around. I was very satisfied with both entrees. The service here was amazing! We got helped right away, got our coffees and waters then took our orders. They asked if we wanted to get our Pancakes first before our actual meal. We appreciated that they were so attentive and professional. We had to make reservations for dinner on a weeknight, the place was pretty packed and service was slow only because they were short staffed. My friend ordered the Yuzu Refresher and it was SO good!! I didn't enjoy the kimchi Bloody Mary :( it was very bland. Food: we loved the crispy Brussels sprouts, my friend ordered the pork belly pasta which she enjoyed. I had the chicken biscuit plate with gravy. It was okay for someone who enjoys really heavy and oily food, and I didn't like how fried the kale was. They should sub this for another type of side. Customer service 20/10 Everyone came to check on us multiple times. Very friendly staff! Love the music, love the vibe of the place. If you don't like the taste of alcohol but are in the mood for something different I'd recommend their guava drink. A little bit of rum but you can hardly taste it. Mediocre brunch experience for me at Scratch. I'm a big eggs benny gal, it's always my go-to dish. I ordered the braised pork belly eggs benny and upon one of my bites, the pork had a distinctly sticky texture and overall pork-fatty flavor (not in a good, decadent way). I can't describe it other than an explosion of nasty pork fat flavor in my mouth... it really turned me off for the rest of my meal. Usually, pork belly flavor explosion is a great thing, but not here for me. My friends speak highly of the chicken and waffles, and the service was good. Not sure if I'd like to come back, but if I did, I wouldn't get the pork belly again. read more
