Super cute real little bakery in Jersey City! I know that it has been long ago discovered and appreciated by the locals, but I was visiting my friend and she had us stop by for stuffed rolls and cinnamon bread. The meatball roll and eggplant roll were quite tasty and great for a little lunch treat. And I loved the cinnamon bread so much that I came back the next day to get some to take home for my husband and I. Love it, love the little lady, and will be back when I'm back in JC. read more

Literally in the middle of nowhere, I recommend driving here, esp at night if you care for your own safety, or unless your name is Evil Kneivel. Else it's a good 10-15min walk from the Grove St PATH station. The ingredients on the menu look more Italian than anything else (mozz, rabe, various salumi, etc). The good thing is you won't find a sammich for more than 6 bucks here. The ham? knots on the counter looked especially appetizing. For the quality and value, I don't think any 'bakery' surpasses this crowd pleaser. This time I was in grab and go sweet mode, but I will be sure to return and give their savory bites a fancy. Ordered: -Cinnabread ($2) - roughly a CD case in size, it's gargantuan, may be the one time in my life I will have to say that there's TOO MUCH cinnamon powder between the nooks of the bread, but good, nice and chewy, not too oily, a huge plus -Bread Pudding (~$2) - served in saran wrap, premade, looks like a mini loaf of bread, i have yet to try this, it's sitting in my fridge, will report back soon -Ricotta Cream Puff (~$2.50) - they give this one a fancy name but it's good, more stuffed to order cheese filling than a stuffed shell or ricotta slice, puff itself got a little soggy, served in saran wrap if to go, the filling is CRACK! Okay, I was afraid that with the really high rating here on Yelp I'd over hype the place for myself. I'm glad I was wrong and this place deserve 5 stars. While this is a "bakery" don't expect the place to be filled with cupcakes or any of that nonsense. You'll find great sandwiches here. I had a pepperoni roll, a prosciutto sandwich (the #1), and a chicken cutlet sandwich. Thank god I ate them in that order because while the roni roll and the #1 were pretty good the chicken cutlet makes you forget about them both. The cutlet comes with great bread, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and lettuce. There's also a nice little sauce that gives it some zest. My only gripe is that they do close rather early but I'm sure the sweet friendly old lady who runs the counter has other things to tend to. Either I didn't read closely enough or just didn't read period...but these cinnamon breads are HUGE. From the pics I thought they were the size of your typical pastry. They are about the size of half a loaf of french bread...huge. I got 3 not knowing this lol. Cinnamon bread was a high 3 low 4 out of 5. Maybe a little too much cinnamon as I have a little bit of a bitter/burn sensation in my mouth...but maybe these arent meant for one human to consume? I had most of one. Parts of it were super dense, spongy, and tender while others were very hard. I would have preferred all soft and spongy. Pizza was fantastic, super soft, great sauce and cheese ratios. Great flavor. Stuffed pepperoni bread was also great. Slow service but you get that in such a mom and pop/neighborhood type atmosphere. I didn't want to wait for my items to be heated and I'm glad the woman asked if I wanted them heated. Opted to take them as is and very happy with the decision. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. The food is delicious and fresh. The prices are unbelievable, given the quality and size. I usually get the #3 large combo sub with the marinated mushrooms- SO GOOD. Their sausage bread and cinnamon bread are also pretty great. I often pick up a loaf of one (or both, since they're so cheap- $2/whole cinnamon bread loaf or whole sausage bread loaf for $4) to bring to friends in central NJ when I visit. The shop is very small and doesn't have an eat-in section. Around lunch time, this can be very busy. The couple that owns this place is incredibly sweet, and it's always nice to see them when I stop in for a sandwich. The mozzarella here is very good as well. Just remember- cash only, and it closes early- around 3PM, so you have to get here early. I used to live around the corner from here, so it was an easy trip I'd make at least twice a week. Now that I live closer to Monmouth Deli.....I still find myself stuck on Second Street Bakery. Also- something I noticed under the Yelp filtered reviews- a lot that I read under the filtered section that had been removed, actually seemed like legitimate reviews. This place is just that great. Read the reviews and heard about this place through people from work so decided to check this out. Small, hole in the wall bakery that's a time warp back to the 1960s. Place is large enough to take about 5 steps and your at the end of the store. All bread is made through a brick oven. Sandwiches are made in the back. Had the Spicy Italian Sausage Parm sandwich. Excellent. Fresh mutz and red sauce was homemade and excellent. Sausage had great flavor. Price of the large sub was $5.50. Lol.... Could not believe the price for the quality and amount of food I got. The stuffed bread with sausage and pepperoni was also excellent. If in Jersey City, must check these guys out. read more

Great place to visit in the AM (open at like 8am) - because the place is jam packed with food. By 3pm its basically all gone. Among the 30 people in line in front of you are teachers from Ferris HS, Port Authority cops, construction workers, wall st types, mob guys from the italian club a block away, firemen, JCPD... Stuffed rolls are awesome - especially the sausage rolls. They make a larger sausage bread and pepperoni bread which are both great too. The only thing I would "ding" them on is the mozzarella - which is good but not great and they don't make it in house. However everything else is so good, and they have barely raised prices over the year, so I still feel they deserve the highest rating. Mmmmm... this sandwich shop knows how to do it right. So ridiculously cheap its unheard of. Its the tiniest little take out italian sandwich shop and bread bakery, and everything is delicious. Its literally in the middle of nowhere on a resiential street far from any public transportation. I've only been here on the weekends, and they sell out of certain items pretty quickly - and then close shortly thereafter. I probably wouldn't show up any later than 2. I love the egg sandwiches w/ broccoli raab and fresh mozzarella, or the egg w/ potato and pepper jack cheese. The rolls are the great - spinach and broccoli raab can't be beat. Often they have wrapped sandwiches/rolls on the couner filled w/ cheese and vegetales that I grab about 3 at a time. The bread is incredible and the fillings is just greasy enough to help that hangover. Yum. read more

It loses a star for the time I got food poisoning from this place. That was an awful experience. And unfortunately why I don't come here anymore. Great hot sandwiches with one of the best gravies/sauces used. Not sure but it tastes homemade. I get the chicken parm often and it's killer. Every aspect of the sandwich is awesome. The gravy, the fresh Mozz, the bread and the FRIGGIN' chicken is fresh and plentiful. I always get the stuffed breads and rolls to take home and some to drop off to mom. everything on the rack is good and you can never go wrong. Parking is an issue.
