the barbecued meats at this place are absolutely outstanding. If you were expecting a restaurant with waitress service and cocktails, this is not it, just good barbecue. My husband and I stopped in for lunch hearing great things about this place, and ended up not happy at all with the results of the meal. Being from Texas I had to try it out, however I was very sad. The meat was so dry and bland I had to douse it in the BBQ sauce. The sauce was OK but too sweet for my taste. I did notice some of the items on the wall was from ATX however you would think by the name of the restaurant that it would show the true beauty of TX and do us proud by having amazing food. read more

Called ahead to place a to go order for 2 1/2 racks.....the guy said he wouldn't get it ready till I got there. I showed up 15 mins later and started talking to a girl at the counter when another guy at the counter rudely said "I'm going to take this order because she was here first"...I was standing 2 ft to the left of the lady telling someone else at the counter I had a to go order. Then the guy looks at me and rudely says "are you OK"? Like there was something wrong with me.....at the point he first said anything I hadn't even finished my first word to the girl. I got a 1/2 lb of brisket to go. It's the worst brisket I've ever eaten. Very fatty with no bark or pink smoke ring on it. It doesn't even taste like bbq, more like plain ole dried up roast beef that's over priced. 9 dollars for the 1/2 lb. Only reason they get a star at all is because the sweet tea isn't bad! read more

There are Two in Durango I picked the one south of town,it was a good choice, I cant wait to go back! Its across the street from Bodo park for thoes who know Durango. You can eat outside alongside the Animas river. delightful! We split the sampler plate it was great, plenty of food,(not greasy) and the sauces,YUM! Not as good as it was 7 years ago. The rings and color on the brisket were good. But smoke flavor was non existent. The BBQ sauce is vinegar based. I have a few similar recipes and like them. Serious needs to offer at leas 3 sauces of various flavor and heat. Too bad they rate an "Ok". read more

I don't usually seek out barbecue but I went here on a recommendation by a friend who went to Fort Lewis and I'm glad I did. I tried the potato salad, the Texas Taco, Pulled Pork sandwich and Elgin Texas Sausage sandwich. It was all great but the last sandwich was absolutely perfect. It's good but i've had better. The food was good with a good amount for the money. It is a nice place with a friendly staff. My wife and I really didn't care for the 2 bbq sauces they have and that fact it is cold. I like hot temperature sauce. We felt they needed more choices in sauce. My wife also felt the ribs were too spicy. We would have enjoyed it more with our store bought bbq sauce we had in our rv. read more

This place knows how to do bbq. Try the Big 6 sampler of beef brisket, turkey, pulled pork, ribs and smoked sausage. Then delight your senses with the multitude of sauces and condiments. Very few places are as deserving as the "meh, I've experienced better" review than "serious texas". First off, I grew up in Texas, and I'm a BBQ fanatic. I've been to joints where you wait in line for hours before they open, because they're selling out by noon. "serious texas BBQ" this place is not. It's...ok. The brisket is dry, and bland. The pulled pork is dry, and bland. The sausage, turkey, and on...thursdays(?) the chicken, is pretty ok. If you're going to call yourself "serious texas BBQ" and you consistently F-up brisket, you lose the right to that title. I've tried it a couple of times hoping I had caught them on a bad day, but been consistently disappointing. I'm not worried about ambiance or service (which are both ok), because it's a BBQ joint. If your meat doesn't stand up to the test everything else is a waste of time. If they want to call themselves "Serious Texas" they need to take a roadtrip and learn how it's done. Get some wood-fired, off-set smokers, and make brisket the way it is meant to taste. what you're serving now...well, it's a lie. It's not serious, it's certainly not "Texas", and the BBQ bit is debatable. read more

Although some of my non Texan Durango peeps would totally disagree, Serious Texas aint that Serious. I am from Austin and a BBQ connoisseur, been to all the great BBQ places in Texas..My boyfriend constantly craves Serious Texas but I have to make him go without me. They need help with the sauce, way too runny, not flavorful at all. The pros: they have lonestar in bottles and PBR, their beans are actually quite good as well as the potato salad, but in the BBQ world, your sides should not make up for your lack of good bbq. The brisket is ALWAYS dry as well as the Turkey, The only thing I really like there is the sausage and thats cause it comes straight from Elgin Tx. Dont go in to serious thinking its gonna be the best, unless you arent trained in real BBQ. Serious Texas Tacos aint bad though!!! read more

I was RV'ing thru Colorado and wanted bbq. The name sounded like they meant business so I stopped. The counter girl was yukking it up with the boys in the back and when I asked her some questions, she gave me the cliff note version. I ordered the pork ribs and beans. I'm a "sauce guy" and know my condiment sauces. They had several flavors, very institutional flavor with none of them really standing out. There was alot of meat on the ribs but they were lukewarm. The beans were no better. Nice spacious patio, great place for the guys to go after a golf game and have a beer and ribs but the food is just mediocre. read more

We're staying in Durango for a week and the friends we were with recommend this place, so we all went for dinner our second night. I was totally disappointed. They had really built this place up to have good food. It's like most BBQ places, order at the counter, everything is separately priced ,fill your own drinks and minimalist sitting. The shredded pork was okay but on the dry side. The BBQ sauce was horrible!! Which basically ruined the whole meal. The cheesy potatoes had absolutely no flavor! I run a BBQ business in Kentucky and have to say that my expectations were low. I had never before had BBQ in the West (outside of Texas) that was fit to eat. I chuckled at the thought of raspberry chipotle sauce....that ain't BBQ. Well...I was wrong. We ordered the sampler with pulled pork, sausage, brisket and turkey. The turkey was excellent...moist and flavorful, which is tough to do. The brisket was excellent and the ribs were very good. The pulled pork was the only dissapointment...way to finely shredded and quite dry. Not good at all. The table sauces were good...almost as good as mine:-) The specialty sauces were OK but I would say not home made....raspberry chipotle was pretty dang good. We tried two sides...pinto beans and the cheesy potatoes. Pinto beans were excellent...cheesy potatoes were edible but nothing special. All in all, my expectations were exceeded by a considerable margin & my wife liked it as well. I'd go back for sure. read more

Being from Kansas City, BBQ capital of the world.... I love me some BBQ. This place is good, but could not make it in that market.

Unfortunately, I did not really enjoy the food here. I love good barbecue, and as this place was near our hotel, we decided to try it on a whim. I wouldn't go back, though. When we walked in, there was just a counter to order from, then after they give you your food (no waiting, it is cut while you watch and served immediately), you go find your own table. The meat is brought out of a warmer, then sliced and put directly onto a clean sheet of paper on top of a tray - no plates. The ambience is kind of like a school cafeteria. That all would have been fine and kind of kitschy or cute if the food was awesome, but we were rather disappointed in ours. The ribs were cut up strangely so were mostly bone and fat. The turkey just tasted like any deli turkey. The potatoes and cheese were just kind of plain and boring. So, sorry, but no, I didn't think it was anything epic and I wouldn't go back. The meat is good, tender and flavorful. Only side I've had is the cheesy potatoes which are really good, so I always get them. I've been there about 10 times. I'd give it 5 stars except for this- they have chipotle sauce which I never like anywhere, and they have a sweet BBQ sauce, but it is really watery and not very flavorful. I'm going to start taking my own bottle of sauce with me. Their patio at the east location sits up high over the Animas River and it is really awesome. Finding places like this is one of the reasons I love roadtrips. Excellent pulled pork with delicious chipotle cherry sauce that had cherry chunks in it. Mouth watering smoked turkey breast. Tender brisket, rich in taste. Their home made BBQ sauce was a yummy addition. Nice twist on the cole slaw, it was pretty spicy. The cheesy potatoes and the potato salad were okay - but who really needs sides when the meat is this great! Very casual atmosphere - a lot of people walked in in their snowboarding and hiking gear.
