We had a medium sized Birthday party here and had a pretty good time overall. Some work definitely needs to be done here though! Hostess is nonexistent, we watched others wait for 10 minutes all night unfortunately. That is the first step in the playbook for restaurant owners, immediate greeting. Right up there with having drinks to the table in the first few minutes. The server was very nice, just quiet and not talkative. Again, simple training skills for an easy fix. The food was good for the most part, we liked the elevated and unique menu and tastes. The queso is extremely good along with the Guac and chicken tostada. The salsa's were not good and you have to pay for them. No complimentary salsa or chips! The place was wide open so very loud, but that never bothers us! It's been a few years since I've been to what was previously named Mission Taco (but it's the same restaurant still) and I used to enjoy their food and drinks. This time, however, was not a great experience. The service was slow (we were literally the first table I noticed in the restaurant at 4:45pm) and our queso was cold, my margarita was super sweet and weak, and I was just overall not impressed. I liked the premium location at Park Place, the nice atmosphere and the helpful, attentive service during my soft opening dine-in dinner. My BBQ chicken taco ($3.50) and a side of refried black beans ($4.00) were served just five minutes after I ordered at the bar. The taco was just okay, with a 5" single layer, moist, soft, corn tortilla and a fair amount of dark, cubed, chicken meat. Three hot sauces were available to spice things up. I especially liked the generous portion of creamy, tasty, refried black beans. I noticed a nice patio adjacent to the open park-like area, a lengthy bar and a nice, spacious, recently remodeled dining area with background music (very faint). I finally decided to check this place out for lunch. It wasn't busy when I arrived. There was one other table seated. The two people working were very friendly and attentive. I had to get their queso. I would put it in my top 5. The one thing I couldn't figure out was something was sweet...I could not figure out if it was the queso or chips. For lunch, I tried their tacos which they are known for. I got the Baja grilled fish taco and carne asada steak. The fish taco hit the spot. The steak was a little chewy. I'm giving 4 stars because the bartender was excellent. The food was mediocre. I got 2 different tacos. The bbq chicken wasn't very good. The chicken was over cooked and the tortilla it came on was obviously sitting out for too long. I forget the name of the other but it was ground beef. It was good but not great. I also had the chips & guac. It was okay, but nothing to write home about. I also got a mission margarita. It was good, but too sweet for my tastes. I prefer margs made without the sweet & sour margarita mix, but this definitely had it. The restaurant seems clean, but is extremely loud. I guess that's what I get for going during happy hour. I've been to the crossroads location one time and it's definitely better quality than the Leawood location. read more

I love where this place is located. It's great for date night or if you are wanting to enjoy a nice day on the patio. I came here for their new brunch menu and I tried the breakfast empanadas filled with eggs, breakfast potato, pork potato, salsa, lime crema and queso fresco. The Churro French toast was interesting, they are made from French bread which I don't care much for. They come with a strawberry compote and you would think because it was a churro French toast it would have churros flavor, but it doesn't it just has flavor when you put the strawberry topping on. The breakfast burrito is big enough to share with another person. Their chip flight is delicious, you have to eat the cheese fast because it gets cold quickly. I love their roast pepper salsa. Overall I love this place. Their service is great, the location is great, the food could use a little more flavor. The best thing on the menu is their fire roasted salsa. read more

Great value Ambiance is on the nicer side being Park Place and a "taco joint" but not priced unfairly. Portions are spot on and the fish tacos are 4*! I usually don't get excited for street corn however this is a must have and done perfectly. The right amount of sear, not overwhelming on the cheese on top and a single side is good for 2! Headed to this spot for dinner on a Thursday evening. The patio was hopping so we waited for a table outside. The patio backs up to the park place greenspace. Once seated, our server gave us her recommendations on the best things to order. We of course got the salsa, the red one is very spicy! We also ordered the loaded fries, they were pretty good. For tacos, I ordered the hot chicken and steak tacos. Both were good, and the hot chicken was spicy! I also ordered two cocktails with my meal, the smugglers blues, a frozen margarita with strawberry and pineapple. It was good and severed with a pineapple leaf. Got a chance to visit the new Mission Taco location. Inside of the place is spacious and nice. They have an outdoor seating with a nice view of the Barkley Square! We ordered the carne asada tacos and the meat tasted as if it had been mixed with meat that had been left from the day before or even longer. Had that very "off" taste. I did not eat it at all. Ordered a Pina Colada which did not come with any coconut cream in it which is a basic in the recipe for a pina colada. This restaurant is struggling to maintain the a Mexican standard. read more

Walked back in the restaurant, asked the same guy who I picked it up from if the chicken size was the right portion size, offered to pay for extra meat, and dude tells me it's just a little smaller than the other. Comes back with a similarly small tender, not even sauced with the hot chicken oil. Poor experience and will not be back. Spend your money elsewhere around park place, no remorse or even apology. The wait to get in was nice and short, despite looking relatively busy. Our party of 5 got sat without issue (I also used the waitlist feature just in case). We got waited upon quickly, but then the long waits began. We could tell our waiter was definitely overwhelmed with a lot of tables, as drinks were forgotten. We ordered chips and dip and had to ask for them to come out before the meal. The meal itself took nearly 25+ minutes to get to us. And items were forgotten, so some had to wait longer than others for their food. I ordered the hot chicken taco, the ground beef one, and the carne asada taco. They were okay. Filling, relatively tasty, and that's about it. I want to be clear, our waiter was very kind! We were not upset at him at all. He was just very busy and our experience fell short because of that. The food was so good I forgot to take photos until we were about to leave! I had a Delicious spicy shrimp taco, less than $5, also had the two kinds of salsa with chips, my friend had the kids 2 taco meal with Mexican corn. The whole bill was under $20 for lunch. Everything was so good and amazingly reasonable. The outdoor patio was lovely and our server was so sweet and helpful with suggestions on what to order. I loved that mission taco is a little different from your average Mexican restaurant with some cool blends such as a Mexican style Cubano sandwich which I would like to try next. We have visited a different Mission Taco in the past and have always loved pur food and our service. This was our first trip to this location and it is our favorite because with great tacos, delicious mocktails, and great service, they also have fantastic seating al fresco on the patio at Barkley Square. It's a beautiful place to relax while you dine and watch others play on the lawn. The service was good, the atmosphere was good. Nothing wrong with the building. Nice and clean. I mainly have an issue with the food and drink. I got the carne asada tacos, which were supposed to come with meat, arugula, and a verde sauce that I forget the name of. Tacos are easy to expedite y'all. There was the smallest amount of sauce for the amount of dry carne and dry arugula they put on there. The corn tortillas were stale around the edges which made it all the dryer. And the flavor of the carne was as if it took a bath in salt water. No beef taste, just salt. I also got the dip trip, which was disappointing as the salsa tasted good but it had hard large chunks of onion and pepper as if it wasn't blended all the way. The queso was good though. Good heat, good consistency. So was the guac. The Paloma was okay. Not enough simple syrup but it's hard to call it an actual Paloma. Just too tart. Overall, needs work. read more

We arrived here early plenty of time before the concert for a bit to eat. We got seated right away and placed our order. The restaurant was busy but not completely packed. We ordered 4 tacos and chips & salsa. It took them quite awhile to bring out our order. Chips and salsa did not come out till after we got our 4 tacos and we had to asked about it. I won't say they were the greatest. To me it seems bland. No flavors to them. Would this be a place that I would come back to? Maybe, not for the food but because of the location. My boyfriend had to go to the bar to ask for water because our waiter never came around. The burrito was good, I would like to try the breakfast one perhaps when they are no longer as busy. Went here with my family and another family. 6 adults, 4 small kids. Restaurant was nowhere near packed. I got a drink spilled on me. No apology. Waitress just went to get paper towels and handed them to me. Looked annoyed. I had to ask her to get towels as I was cleaning up myself and the table/floor. She got the towel and tried handing it to me. When I didn't reach for it, she did end up cleaning up the rest so that's good I guess. Food was very mediocre. Queso was a weird texture and not very hot when it got to us. The taco salad was pretty good. My husbands burrito was meh. The service was slow despite the dining room being empty. We all ordered a variety of tacos and only the shrimp was good. It was all cold. The trio dip was not good at all. The guacamole had large chunks and no flavor and the cheese dip was too hard to even dip your chips. Overall was just a very disappointing dining experience! read more

My family of 5 (including 3 kids age 7 and under) stopped into Mission Taco Joint tonight for dinner. The dining area was only 1/2 full and we were seated immediately with waters arriving at our table shortly after. There appeared to be plenty of front of house staff -- two hostesses that made sure to hold up the front desk and at least 7-8 servers and bussers. The rest of our experience was completely laughable. It took 15-20 minutes of sitting before our server came to our table. We planned to order drinks and an app before ordering entrees, but after waiting for so long before placing our order, that seemed like a risky choice. We waiting another 40 minutes for our food to arrive. Not once during that time did ANYONE come check on us. No one asked if we wanted another drink, no one offered us complementary chips while we waited, no one apologized for the long wait. Nearly an hour passed since we were initially seated. You can guess how pleasant our hungry crew was. The food finally arrived. Thankfully it was hot and tasted okay. We had all finished 1/2 our meals before our server made it back around to see how everything turned out. We flagged her down for our receipt shortly after so we weren't left waiting another 40 minutes. This was the 2nd time we dined at Mission Taco Joint. We were hoping for a quick and casual meal, but instead experienced some of the worst dining service we have had in a looong time. My wife and I had always wanted to try this restaurant, now Sessions Taco, and we finally had the opportunity to go to lunch there. We should have wondered about the place when no one was inside at 12:30 on a Friday. There was also only one table with three ladies outside on the patio. The manager, maybe owner, greeted us soon after we walked in the door and told us to pick a table outside. We did. A few minutes later a server came out with a young couple and their child who were seated behind us. A few minutes later the couple moved to a table next to us so they could see their daughter in the play area. The server was there almost immediately with some chips and salsa--no acknowledgment of us. We felt invisible. A few minutes later he delivered drinks to the young couple and checked in with the three ladies. Again, no acknowledgement that we were even there. We waited.... We waited... I pulled up Yelp and found another restaurant nearby, and we left. We intentionally walked through the vacant restaurant to see if anyone would care that we were leaving, and you know: they didn't. Came in to Mission Taco to see if they had to go Margaritas and they did! It was 630 on a Monday night and I was able to get two quick margaritas to go and enjoyed them in the common area located next to the restaurant while our daughter played. My wife and I gave this location a try and frankly we didn't have very high expectations. We had been to the one in the Crossroads a couple of years ago and thought the chips and salsa were amazing but the tacos were bland and not really worth bothering with. I am not sure if the menu has changed at all locations, they just got better or this location is better but we both agree that the tacos, tortes, quesadillas, and empanadas are outstanding. Worst service we have had in a long time. Excited for a Wednesday night out with my husband and 2 year old daughter, but ended up being an awful experience due to our server. After asking for a few minutes to decide on meal orders, she didn't return to the table for 25 minutes at which point she asked us if we were ready for our check. Our food took another 30 minutes to come out and she didn't check in with us once during this time. I had to leave with my daughter because she'd already been sitting for over an hour. The server walked right past our table multiple times without making eye contact while we were waiting for the food to come out. She never checked in once our food was delivered. And then after we were done eating it took another 30 minutes for her to bring the check. She didn't apologize for the wait. Nothing was comped, which is fine, but at the minimum I'd expect her to be apologetic. It then took over 10 minutes after asking for a to go box for my toddlers food that she couldn't eat, we finally had to go inside and ask the hostess. At least the food we did finally have was good. But incredibly irritated and disappointed by this experience. read more
