We stopped in on the way back to Union Station after visiting Millennium Park to see the Christmas Tree. This was on the way back to the station, one of the few places open because we were visiting on the holiday (New Years Day). We wanted a fast food restaurant but not of the McD level (a bit higher) with good fries and it seemed when we stepped in to look at the menu this checked all of those boxes. We also liked that it wasn't too packed when we came in and you could order at the kiosks. The ordering at the kiosks was simple and the interface seemed nicely done. We were ordering for six people but the order didn't take too long to come out. I ordered the Shake Stack (I think that was the name) and the others ordered a mix of some hot dogs, regular cheese burgers, and fries (both cheese and no cheese). Everyone liked the food and portions were very good. Tables were clean as was the floors and rest of the interior. We picked a table at the end of the restaurant across from the one exit only door where we could all fit. The location worked well until we realized that there was a powerful draft every time someone would open the door leading to a lot cold air blowing in, this was about the only thing we didn't like. In summary, if you are looking for a fast, affordable restaurant with good food (burgers, fries, and shakes) then we would recommend here. read more

I came downtown to support Kilwin's for ice cream but I can't have just that for dinner (well I CAN, but you know..) so as a treat I got a burger. The place had outdoor and indoor seating, and was taking precautions for the pandemic, but we were doing takeout. It took a while for 2 burgers and 1 fry, but I realize they receive online orders as well as in person. I ordered the Shackburger with cheese, pickles and Shacksauce but didn't detect EITHER. It wasn't expensive so it was smallish (bigger than McD but still) but it was a decent burger, and the crinkle fries were awesome, esp if you put them in the oven first, instead of melting them in the microwave. Get their fries! There was a long line, but I knew what I wanted to order. I got the shack burger with everything on it, the crinkle cut fries, and an Oreo milkshake. At first I thought it was weird that the milkshake costed more than the burger, but later on understood why. The burger was juicy and I love their sauce. The crinkle cut fries are almost my favorite shape of fry. They were super crunchy but still soft on the side. Just how I like my fries. Now the milkshake was pretty big and it was SO thick. This location is located along a busy stretch of street across from Millennium Park. So we should have expected a long line. Our group comprised of locals as well as out of town and out of country tourists wanted to eat a burger and fries snack. We started to wait in line and then decided to order using the online system. When we were almost at the order counter the order went in and said come after 7pm and we will have your order ready (about 20mins from when the order was placed). In retrospect ordering online are more for those who are not presently at the location because people before us and after us in line had already gotten their orders while we waited for another 10mins at least. So don't use the online ordering if you are in line and even if the line seems long. It doesn't que up the order for right when you place the order but only after awhile. We went to pickup the order at the counter and one of the out of country relatives we were with was insulted by the lady handing out the orders. The employee made a reference to her belly inferring that she had to get her order quick because of the "baby that was in her belly". She wasn't even pregnant! How rude! Now she has heard about Shake Shack and always enjoys eating here when she is in the country but that comment put a damper on the experience to say the least. The food was standard. We ordered fries, shack stacks, shack burgers and drinks- Arnold Palmer's. The fries were disappointing in quantity. Having recently been to a north location of shake shack the amount we received at this location was noticeably less. I Had 0 expectations. All I wanted was good food and after waiting 30 min in line, I got it! I want to preface that I'm a huge fan of places with special sauce and good cheese sauce so I was really winning. We had very quick and friendly service and even though the wait was long the process was smooth. So I've only been here their milkshakes and they're pretty solid. Dense, rich, and creamy... what more could you ask for? Hm, maybe a cheaper price tbh. They cost as much as a burger! Don't even get me started with the extra 50 cents to make it "malted", literally tastes the same to me. However, I've been meaning to try out their burgers for a while now and after hearing about their deal about giving out a FREE shackburger for downloading their new app (offer expires 2/28). I immediately did so and was out the door within 5 seconds and on my way to the nearest Shake Shack. It was around 9 p.m. so not busy at all, there were a few tables left, but our order was ready for us as soon as we got there. I don't know if the burger tasted better than it should have because it was free or because it's actually THAT good. But my bf and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will def have to give it another shot. That shack sauce definitely was the icing on the cake though. Fries weren't anything to special. I'll pass on those next time. My sister and I stopped in here for a quick dinner one night. It was packed! Despite how busy it was, it only took about ten minutes for us to get to the front of the line to order our food. We ended up going with one double cheeseburger and two orders of fries. It cost about $20 total for all of the food. We take a seat close to the front and wait until our food is ready. When the food came out, it was steaming and fresh. The fries were delicious and crispy. The burger itself was also really good. The meat was juicy and it had a good amount of fresh toppings. Whatever the sauce was on the burger tasted really good and added a level of flavor to the burger. I wish we had ordered a shake, but neither of us were really feeling it that day. After taking a quick walk through "The Chicago Athletic Association" (CAA) we stopped in @ Shake Shack which is located off of the lobby of the CAA. As you enter Shake Shack from the lobby there is a menu board on the wall that takes you directly to the order station. You order, pay, take your vibrator and wait. When your order is ready your vibe goes off signaling its time to pick up you're food. The dining room is nothing fancy with a good amount of seating with a combination of booths & tables w/chairs. There are so many places to get a burger in Chicago Shake Shack is just one of hundreds with nothing to really differentiate them or make them stand out. I ordered a single bacon cheese burger, it's a decent burger at a reasonable price, but nothing that would want to make you come back over and over again. read more

Went to Shake Shack on Michigan Ave, Chicago during the blues festival and it was a great snack during the festival! Burgers are a bit on the small side, but the burgers are cooked well. The cheese fries' cheese has a nice flavor that tastes different and has a smoother texture than what one may expect from cheese fries and a nice savory flavor. The Lemonade is more on the sour side rather than sweet, but is still very refreshing for a warm day. The service was unenthusiastic and made my group feel rushed and as if we made a great inconvenience despite ordering only a few items and moving relatively quickly. We knew what we wanted at the counter, but the staff seemed to be unhappy with the working conditions which may reflect more on Shake Shack than the staff. Shake Shack has been on my to do list for a while since I've heard very good things about it. I've heard that it's essentially a better version than Five Guys and I will have to agree. The place is located at the entrance of the Chicago Athletic Association so it's a good location for lunch in the Loop. There is a decent amount of seating, but I can see it getting very crowded during peak lunch hours, but it wasn't very crowded at 11:30am on a Monday. Service was adequate and the cashier was very nice and cheerful! I ordered a Double Shack Burger, Cheese Fries, and Cookies & Cream Milk Shake for $20 because you know about that Bears game last night... So I was still eating my feelings obviously... I thought the burger blew Five Guys out of the water. Yes, you get a ton more food at Five Guys and Shake Shack is pricier, but the burger was soooo good. It was hot, juicy, fresh, and it literally melted in my mouth. The cheese fries were to die for! The cheese was very thick and rich. I don't typically like crinkle cut fries, but they were pretty crispy like Portillo's. Other reviews say there wasn't enough cheese, but I thought it was a generous amount. The shake was delicious too! It was almost as good as Portillo's Chocolate Cake Shake as you could taste the cookie chunks. Definitely tasted like Oreos! The best equivalents to Shake Shack are M Burger and Five Guys and I thought Shake Shack was the clear winner. If you think Shake Shack burgers are small, then you probably haven't been to M Burger where they are even smaller (probably slightly cheaper). Price was a little bit expensive, but that's because this is the Loop in the Chicago Athletic Association where everything is pretty expensive. I had long awaited my trying of Shake Shack and thanks to my buddies FKA British Tim R. and JohnGreg, I finally had the chance. Apparently there is almost always a long line but the day we went after work, there was no such thing. There was very limited seating though and I'm pretty sure we got one of the last tables available. Even though the portobello burger sounds good, I had to try their OG Single Stack Shake Shack burger on my first go. The $5.19 ShackBurger is a no frills, thin patty burger cooked well, made well, and pretty tasty with their special sauce on it. A friend of mine puts this in his top 3 burgers. I can't say I'd go quite that far but it's a good tasty option in the loop. Bonus point because they brew their own beer with help from Brooklyn Beer called ShackMeister Ale for $5.50. However, the beer isn't fabulous, but decent, and it's served in a plastic cup which I'm pretty sure is not 16 ozs as promised on the website. Although an NYC tradition, the first I heard of Shake Shack, was my Miami friends telling me the line was around the block for weeks when theirs opened. Intrigued? As others have commented, entry is a tad confusing- Don't go In Through the Out Door on Michigan Ave. directly into the restaurant, wearing your Raspberry Beret- just enter through the lovely lobby of the Chicago Athletic Association. Went here on my lunch hour on a weekday. Filled with typical tourists, skewing younger (hype brings the FOMO young'uns out), the inside is nice, although not large. I like the wood paneling, the mural, the small neon sign. If this place was twice as large, it would be great. This was my first visit and I ordered the Smoke Shack burger with bacon, cherry peppers and Shack sauce. I also ordered the Black and White Shake which has vanilla and chocolate ice cream, and Hot Fudge. The wait was really long. Service at the delivery window was nice once my order came up. Verdict: good burger, I liked the peppers on it; but it definitely wasn't the best burger ever, worth a Velvet-Rope-wait-in-Miami-Good. The shake was excellent. If I were to have a shake, fries and hot dog, I easily would have tipped over $20 for a fast-food-esque experience. I ordered the Pullman sausage hot dog $5 (beer cheese and fried onions) which was delicious but left me thinking I could use a little more meat/eats and amazement for a $5 hot dog. I also ordered a $5 cold brew coffee (on the higher side for a cold brew - I've been ordering them left and right lately). I did, however, find myself obsessing over the architecture of the lobby and actual restaurant. The mosaic floors are like something you would see in an ornate Italian museum. As far as the food, there's not much to say. It's good fast food that's fresh and delicious but somewhat overpriced in my opinion. But I think everyone should try it at least once. What's really important is how long it takes to get your food. The process is pretty efficient. Keep in mind that this is on Michigan Avenue, so it can get pretty busy. I suggest downloading the app and placing an order in advance. I grabbed some dinner on the way home from work. It was about a 10 minute wait for my food. It was a little uncomfortable because there wasn't much space in the waiting area. But I was satisfied with the meal. read more
