Going with coworkers for lunch I was the lucky one, a rare occurrence. I had previously experienced the shake shack in NYC. I waited there and I waited in Chicago. There aren't many things I'm willing to wait for. Shake Shack is worth the wait, if for no other reason than your appetite will be at its all-time zenith as you smell the sizzling meat and your gastric juices start eating away at dignity. By the time you get to the counter, which is running full steam with four cashiers to take your burger bucks, you are famished and likely will order more than a human should consume in one sitting. Double cheeseburger? Sure. Add bacon? Who needs clear arteries? Everyone I've surveyed admitted to skipping dinner after a shake shack lunch. DO NOT GO HERE // plastic piece in food. I was visiting Chicago from Michigan and went to a shake shack for the first time. I ordered the chicken shack, a crinkle cut fries, and a lemonade. I ate most of the chicken sandwich and then Bit into something hard. I assumed it was a piece of bone or gristle, but after inspection I found it to be a piece of plastic. It was very hard and yellow and had jagged and sharp edges. The management was apologetic and refund my order, saying that they did not have anything of that color that they use to store lettuce or pickles for the chicken. Caution -- This bad boy is very hot, so give it a few minutes before you take a bite. The wrapper even had a caution label but I was too excited and failed to see it. Continuing the search for the ultimate hamburger! My first experience at a shake shack was in New York quite a while ago. I remember being extremely underwhelmed leaving with a lack for enthusiasm. However, leaving shake shack out of the ultimate burger journey wouldn't be fair. I think Shake Shack's simplicity and straightforward flavors and ingredients allows for a burger that's always satisfying. But in my opinion, there's nothing that gives this burger an edge. This is my first visit to the Chicago location but I have been to the one in Brooklyn. I ordered the Smoke Shack which has bacon and diced cherry peppers with their special sauce and the cheese fries. The beef is naturally raised without hormones and antibiotics which is a good thing but I still prefer grass-fed if given the choice. Prices are not horribly high considering its a block off Michigan Ave. For those familiar with In-n-Out Burger from CA, they win hands down for best fast food burgers in my humble opinion. Especially the off menu #proteinstyle and #animalstyle options. I would come back here again as long as there is no line. First time at shake shack and I thought it was pretty good! The burgers weren't huge, but filling. I ordered the shack stack which is a cheeseburger essentially with another fried portobello vegetarian party. It was juicy, creamy and cheesy. It was definitely well cooked and seasoned. I also ordered the crinkle fries with cheese. I didn't really like the fries. I prefer crispier fries and wanted the cheese to be shredded cheese, not the nacho, liquid cheese. We all opted for the original cheeseburger, which are tender, juicy, and just the right size for me. I had the Smoke Shack Burger -- cheeseburger with all natural smoked Niman Ranch Bacon, chopped cherry pepper with shake sauce. A single was $6.84, and a double was $9.64. It did not come with fries, and a drink so that was another $2.99 for a one size "Crinkle Cut fries made from Yukon Potatoes" and another $3 for a drink. You could potentially have a $12-$16 meal at Shake Shack. At In N Out, you can get a double-double cheeseburger with fries and a drink all for ~$8.00. As much as I enjoy burgers, this was one I enjoyed the least. I found the burger a little small, and although I was was full, I was not satisfied. I don't see Shake Shack much of a burger joint in comparison to In N Out. To me, true burger places would offer big juicy burgers where every bite is saturated with flavor, and your face dripping in sauce. To tell you the truth, if Shake Shack and In N Out did not have this so-called burger rivalry going on, I probably would have had a different perspective of Shake Shack. I've had two Shake Shack experiences in my lifetime. Once in Madison Square Park and this is the second one. We were on our way home and figured we'd catch an early dinner. They went IPO today by the way. The burgers here are kinda pricey. I tried the Meister Burger, it comes with crispy shallots. It was good but it needed lettuce and tomato. We also shared some fries and that hit the spot. Something about those crinkles fries reminds me of the good old college days. I like the decor, it's like you are in a park, with the wooden benches. The place is also clean and well stocked. The lines go pretty fast. You order your food first and then find a seat. When it warms up, I'll stop in for a shake or something. Check it off the list! East coast version of In and Out, with a upscale interior. On this lovely St. Patty's day, every man, woman and baby were out enjoying the first nice weekend of the year. The lines were perpetually long, but it went by fast. The only odd layout were the garbage cans all lined up front and finding a empty table. It got a little territorial when it came to finding a table. I went with the Shackmeister a burger with fried shallots, cheese, and sauce and a side of fries. It reminded me of a slider with a sweetish bun and the fries are the zig zag type. I should have stuck with the shackburger cause I also wanted the lettuce, tomato and onions too... yes, I like my salad to offset the greasy, salty beef. Having just had a burger at In-N-Out, I wanted to take a moment and write a review for Shake Shack. Shake Shack and In-N-Out are often compared to one another-they sell burgers, fries, shakes. But, Shake Shack differs from In-N-Out in a number of ways: crinkle fries, cheese fries (In-N-Out animal-style fries with melted cheese is not the same as cheese sauce on crinkle fries at Shake Shack), custards, and concretes. ALSO: Shake Shack does not require me to fly to Texas or California. Its minutes from my workplace. Shake Shack also uses a Thousand Island base for its burgers. But, its ingredients are high-quality (just look at the burger bun). They pride themselves on tailoring their menu items to their location (Chicago theme) and they also win a place in my book for the public health warning displayed prominently on their wall food menu. Overall, my burger was moist and not dry. Slightly pink in the center. Crisp lettuce, firm tomato slice, melted cheddar cheese, smear of Thousand Island dressing-mayo, and soft bun. Perfect. The crinkle fries my friend ordered were crispy, and made me re-think my stance on crinkle fries (as school lunch fare in the 90's). Def a go-to place for a burger when on Mag Mile. Food is good as evidenced by the long line at lunchtime. It didn't deter me and I'm glad because the ordering process moved rather quickly. The area that needed speeding up was the prep area. I came here because of all the hype the New York location has gotten. Every time I had a friend visit NYC, they always told me about Shake Shack. So when they opened a location in Chicago, it was only a matter of time until I stopped by. I came on a Monday night and the line wasn't too bad. The line wasn't out the door and it moved quickly. Between my friend and I, we ordered to ShackBurgers, the Salted Carame"L" concrete, and some cheese fries. The food took a while to come up but in that time we found a table outside. The burgers were delicious and greasy. My issue with them was that they were awfully small. Think of a McDonald's cheeseburger and you basically have it. The cheese fries were mediocre - good fries but the cheese wasn't amazing. And then the concrete - we ordered it because it was supposed to be unique for Chicago. And it's probably for a good reason - it's overpriced and nothing special. It was honestly more doughnut than everything. Very little salted caramel.
