Ordered lunch special. The price is unbeatable but the food, I cannot say it's good. I ordered Mongolian beef and curry chicken. Neither of them is good....we had to throw half of it away. The rice is very small grain that s not fresh either..... The inside has an vintage ambiance in it...but doesn't seem very clean either. We're lucky to have a great Chinese place in our neighborhood! The last place I lived (granted, it was over 10 years ago now) didn't have a place I liked nearby so it's handy this one is just a few blocks away. My favorite is the egg fried rice--most of the other places I've had it from didn't have plain egg fried rice and since I never thought to ask the to leave the meat out, it was tedious. The Mongolian chicken is really good too, and is the dish I get almost always (seriously, I think I've gotten something else maybe once). The curry chicken is very good too, and the broccoli beef is yummy! They're also very quick too. The last time I ordered for delivery was like the first week of the stay at home order in March 2020, so this is based upon then, but even though they usually estimate 45 minute delivery time there was only one time that it arrived even close to that time. Main entree we shared was the Hong Sue Chicken and moo shu pork. Also added a side of Cantonese pan fried noodles. Hong Sue was not good and would never recommend. Chicken had excessive breading and brown sauce was flavorless and excessively thin. I never tasted garlic with this dish and with the thin sauce it only made the chicken pieces soggy. Moo shu pork on the other hand had A LOT of flavor and a very thick sauce. Paired with the plum sauce in the pancake it was rich. I enjoyed it more over the steamed rice. Ordered the sweet and sour chicken for takeout online and was super pleased! First of all I love that you can order online and pay with cash when you pick it up. Second, let's just say the large is definitely large. Can definitely get two full meals out of one order. Now for the food, also great. Here's to the first review of 2021! Of course we are still doing takeouts instead of dining in due to COVID-19, so I will be focusing on the quality of food only. We decided to check out Shanghai Inn since we were looking for more Chinese food restaurants in the area to order from. I think that Shanghai Inn has excellent American Chinese food. My go-tos are the Mongolian Beef (extra spicy) and the shrimp fried rice. We also tried the pork egg foo young. I think the Mongolian Beef is great! This is one of the few places where you can actually taste the spice if you order it spicy. It's still not gonna burn your tongue off, but it has a tasty heat to it. The egg foo young was cooked well and I liked that the sauce was not overly thick and goopy. The shrimp fried rice was delicious, as well. Some things that I wish Shanghai had are fried shrimp and beef stick appetizers. I feel that the appetizer choices are more limited here. Also, I do wish there was a bit more meat in the Mongolian beef, or at least a bit fewer huge chunks of bell peppers in the dish. The veggies can overpower the amount of meat sometimes. But other than that, Shanghai inn is a very solid choice. It's definitely been added to my frequent order rotation! read more

I don't know why it has taken me so long to review this place. I have been going here for at least the last 2 to 3 years. My boyfriend introduced me to this place because he has been going for the last 10 years at least. The food here is amazing. I typically don't eat in at chinese food places, but I always eat in here. Since my boyfriend has been coming for so long, the owner always comes by to tell us hello or for a quick chat. She is just so nice. Now back to the food, everything here is delicious. We always get the crab rangoon, Mongolian beef and fried rice. I've also had the egg drop soup and sweet and sour chicken. Everything was delicious. Ive never had a complaint. Shanghai Inn has been around for a long time. Somehow I never fell in before this holiday season, when plans fell through and I felt the need to find nourishment. The menu is old-fashioned, Americanized Chinese food -- not that there's anything wrong with that! If you like egg foo yung and chow mein, this might be your place. The menu is large, providing plenty of selection. No matter how big your place, there will be something to please everyone, unless you're Aziz Ansari's mother in "Master of None." She didn't like Chinese food at all. I received a menu. a glass of ice water and hot tea within 30 seconds of sitting down in a booth. Good start. I maintain a plant-based diet -- no animal products -- and even I found something. My stand-by is Mu Shu Pancakes. Lots of veggies, plum sauce, which you can roll up in what Shanghai Inn calls "thin Mandarin-pancakes." Think wheat tacos, but thinner and more delicate. The waitress asked if that was all I wanted. I said, I'm sure it'll be plenty for me. When the meal came, I laughed out loud and said to the waitress, did you really think I needed more than that? She laughed, too. There were four pancakes on a small plate. The bowl containing the vegetable filling, though -- there was enough food there for a party of four. No kidding. The meal was good, not great, between "A-Okay" and "I'm a fan." The remarkable thing, again, was the portion size. Of course, I took the leftover veggies home. The next day, I filled two wheat tortillas with the veggies. That was plenty for lunch. Then I packed away the remainder. That filled three Tupperware containers. No, I am not kidding. I don't know how long it's going to take me to eat it all, since I'm not eating it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but there's got to be four more meals in the leftovers. Would I try Shanghai Inn again? Sure. For $11.03 plus tip, I'm getting maybe six or seven meals. I don't need to return until those Tupperware containers are empty. Good food, reasonably priced. Unless you want to have a week's worth of leftovers in your fridge, you might want to split the entrée with a friend or group of friends. The portion is crazy big. read more

We are always looking for good local Chinese food and I am so happy we trusted the reviews and visited Shanghai Inn! Everyone was so friendly and helpful and the food was great! Hot tea is brought as soon as you sit down and is refilled as many times as you would like, or if you need a warm up. I was torn between a few options of beef and shrimp, and I really wanted ginger. While there wasn't anything on the menu that was exactly what I was asking for, they were very accommodating and made my meal customized to my request. We felt very welcomed when we visited and enjoyed ourselves for quite a while without feeling rushed. We had vegetarian fried rice, curry tofu, combination chow fun, and vegetarian lo mein, a side of steamed white rice (they threw in an extra steamed rice for free) and crab rangoon. The fried rice was filled with hearty veggies, tons of tofu for the curry tofu dish, and the combination chow fun had very good amount of meat. Their lo mein was filled with veggies, too, but lacking in noodles.The lo mein was not the same type of noodle as other restaurants use, but (we know that there are different variations of the same dish) but rather it was more like thin spaghetti hair noodles. We prefer the typical brown lo mein, but it was still delicious! **They are following all covid guidelines and currently there is no indoor dining. You must wear a mask to come in for pick up. My husband and I ordered dinner from Shanghai Inn on New Year's Eve. Due to a mix-up in our order, we were charged incorrectly. We called up after we realized this, and Shanghai Inn corrected the error. They did offer to bring us what we ordered, but at that time, we preferred a refund. They actually showed up to our apartment with a cash refund on New Year's Eve! Even though there was an error, they corrected it. On top of that, the food that we did receive was delicious! (my formerly favorite, 3 Harmony, changed owners/chefs and closed soon after last year) so far I've stuck to old school type Cantonese and Szechwan orders. it's not like my dear departed 3 Harmony, but is the first since their closing I've gone to more than once. I've been so pleased with my initial order that I have gotten it on repeat every few weeks, and have not explored further, but I will People here aim to please, and do.
