The food here is amazing! They have so many items on their menu, it is hard to chose. I typically get the sweet and sour chicken or the wan ton soup. My orders have been great every time! 3.5 stars. Eight bucks for a lunch special, hot, fast, and pretty tasty...can't complain. Actually, I can complain--about the lack of variety among the lunch specials. They don't offer any of my favorites, but I can still find a couple of choices, e.g. Mongolian or Szechuan chicken. Outside of the lunch specials, their fried rices are particularly good. Sesame chicken is skippable. Egg rolls are just okay but thankfully not greasy like most places. Value is high and the staff are always pleasant. I have to admit that the Shanghai Inn has the best Chinese food outside of the tourist-infested Chinatown. Don't be scared by the exterior facade with sun-stained bamboo blinds and the retro decor inside. Basically, it's an old fashioned Cantonese joint. This does not affect the food! First and foremost, Shanghai Inn's staff is super friendly and speak comprehendible English on the phone when placing an order. One of my biggest pet peeve is when you order delivery or pick-up and you're missing important items like silverware, napkins, chopsticks (whether you use them or not), and sauces. They give it all. Oh yes, and often an order of free egg rolls too. They have awesome CHICKEN FRIED RICE. When I say awesome, you don't find bizarre looking or chewy pieces of meat randomly in your rice. It's seasoned just right, and to fit my preferences, doesn't have corn. I also love their SHRIMP ROLLS. They're just like the name says: Shrimp wrapped in rice sheets and fried to perfection. Tail on to be easily dipped in the accompanying sauce and eaten. I can't help myself but to get their MONGOLIAN BEEF (it's not very spicy like their menu claims) and their CHICKEN LO MEIN, both are delicious. I don't know why I haven't yet ordered it but their DINNER FOR TWO is quite the deal: Wonton soup, Egg rolls (2), BBQ ribs (2), Chicken lo-mein, Mongolian beef, and Egg fried rice all for $24.95! There's always next time... If you love almond cookies as much as I do--especially with tea--a bag of 7 cookies is only $1.00! Who said you can't buy anything for a dollar these days?! I've been eating at Shanghai Inn since I moved back up to Ravenswood in 2017. The food is comfort incarnate. Traditional Americanized Chinese food. The owner, Lisa is exceptionally kind and hard working, as is the entire staff. My go-to's: Egg Rolls, Pot Stickers, Crab Rangoon (my partner swears by them), Pork Fried Rice, General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein the food is always exceptional, the portions are ample, and the quality never wanes. Hoping to eat there soon once we're through the pandemic, but until then takeout is just as satisfying. It's my post-protest treat yourself meal. read more

I've been fortunate enough to live within their delivery area for 25 years and I can honestly say it's the best Chinese food ever! We've since moved out of state, but I always pick up carryout while in the city and it's always consistently amazing! I am 81 years old and I have eating a lot of Chinese fod. I ordered Mongolian beef which is supposed to have lots of onions. There was not one onion to be fouThe nd. And it had a very bland taste. Ordered delivery for the first time from Shanghai and will definitely be eating here or taking out again. The pork and shrimp egg rolls are a great appetizer - dense and flavorful. The orange chicken has a great bread covering that's not so heavy. The combination fried rice was packed in the large order and delicious. The beef with the beef and broccoli is very tender. A lot of places just stuff it with cream cheese! Both fried rice dishes were great and NOT greasy! Egg foo young had great flavor, loved the sauce and they didn't skimp on the shrimp! Pork pan fried noodles, noodles were crispy, loves the sauce and came with a lot of pork, mushrooms and pea pods. Sizzling platter, this had a nice smokey flavor to it. Chick was tender, huge pieces of shrimp. Flavorful dish! Lisa is sweet and friendly, very attentive. Food came fast! All this food was only $90, not greasy, salty and not dumped with MSG which is an issue I have when dining in Chinatown. Will be making trips out here more often! read more

I am surprised that, this simply outstanding, Chinese restaurant in Chicago got only an average of 3 stars. This is the best Chinese restaurant in Chicago period. I lived in Chicago from 1981 until 1998, then I moved to San Francisco. I have been to a lot of the excellent Chinese restaurants around the bay area. But, unlike, Shanghai Inn, almost all of them taste the same. They are good, but, for me, lacks that unique taste. Shanghai Inn, has a distinctive taste, that I will never forget and would always remember. Personally, based on my experience, only the restaurants in Macau, Manila and Hong Kong, could challenge my love for this, incredible restaurant. Literally my husband and I were looking for Chinese on yelp while we were headed to Trader Joe's... this is when I see this little gem and I made my husband to a u-turn towards the restaurant. The place itself looks a little run down, but I kinda like the vibe of just being yourself right? They're not trying to be this fancy place. It's all good! Anywho, the food itself was pretty great. Ordered delivery from here for the first time this evening, and it was very good -- exactly what I was looking for. I ordered egg drop soup and shrimp lo mein, and the portion sizes were MASSIVE. The egg drop soup was silky and comforting. Looking at the lo mein, I wasn't convinced that I would like it, but it was really addicting and I found myself eating it even though I was pretty full. Shanghai In is a good family owned restaurant, only reason i did not give them 5 stars is because of the dark chicken meat they use in there fried rice. But i was promised if i ask for white meat the next time i will get it, keep you all posted. The service is excellent and the owner (lisa) is simply amazing. My bf and I ordered carry out over the weekend and were super happy with it. The portions are HUGE. We each ordered an entree- he got a mild chicken and peeped dish, I had the Mongolian Trio (medium) and it wasn't overwhelmingly spicy so if you like it hot, go spicy. You almost need double the amount of rice given how big the entrees are (seriously each entree is like 3 meals). On top of that we got egg rolls (2 in each order but they gave us 2 additional for free!) which were great and we each tried soup- I had the hot and sour and it was great. Lots of tofu so it was almost a meal in and of itself. We'll definitely order again! read more

This is the worst experience ever and there are so many better Chinese restaurants around. Staff is rude and stay away from this restaurant. --thanks for being nice in yelp reply instead of being super rude in the phone. The truth is not as the reply stated and just sad to experience such a dishonest business. My yelp status showed the the order will arrive in 12:19pm and when I called the restaurant it is around 12:00- I do receive phone call but not sure who it was so called back the restaurant to check and When I call back to her, she said my order was canceled and won't send any driver to deliver the food and told me call back yelp for solving the issue. I said:" could you please to check on what's going on?" She was putting me on hold for almost 5 min then told me that- :" No, we won't send you a driver again, and you should apology to us since our driver called you and you didn't pick up the phone!" I tried to say that my yelp shows the food is not even ready to deliver and she hang up the phone- She never apologised in the phone but force me to apologise to the driver and let me call yelp for a solution without a good explanation!!! Really dishonest reply and trying to manipulate the story/blame and force the customers to apologise to your driver in the phone is not going to help the review or future business. Have been ordering so many times in other nearby restaurants ( they are all amazingly friendly and good) and this is my first time with Shanghai Inn and can't believe how rude, dishonest they are they never really take a minute to think how they treat their paying customers in the phone or make the situation better. Discovered during Covid-19 so we have never been served in the restaurant but look forward to it as the food is great traditional Chinese. General Tso, Shrimp in Lobster and Mongolian Beef have been great! I like it spicy and this is the first time in a long time I have gotten Chinese with some kick when requested. Egg rolls crispy without being greasy. Pot stickers perfectly steamed or fried. Sticky rice is great and we use leftovers to make chicken fried rice and turns out great. Big portions so leftovers are a given. This is becoming my favorite Chinese for a reason - great food, spicy when requested and real comfort when I have that urge to have an old school traditional Chinese meal and it doesn't break the bank. My new local Chinese go-to! Let me start by saying when I got my food it was still piping hot!! Thank you so much for that!! We ordered vegetable curry (spicy) Szechuan shrimp (extra spicy) and shrimp almond ding. The shrimps were not over cooked and were big in size and very tender. All of the vegetables were fresh and crisp. All the dishes offered a different taste and were full of flavor! We ate so much and we didn't feel overly full or sick afterwards! Chinese food is always salty, but this didn't have me begging for water after we ate. Was very pleased with this last minute order we made. We definitely will order from here again. read more

Best Chinese takeout in the city. We've gotten takeout from here nearly every week for the last year. Never been disappointed. Great flavor, great ingredients, large portion sizes, and usually delivered early. We normally get spicy sesame chicken, pork lo mein, crab rangoon, and sometimes egg drop soup. There's two of us and we easily get 4 meals out of it. When they were closed during COVID, we tried several other places but none were as good. We were thrilled when they opened again. read more

I just moved to ravenswood in November and have ordered from here about 4 times now. Always fast delivery. It's always been good tasting food until New Years Eve. I ordered $50 worth of food for lunch to then also be left for the next day. I ended up getting food poisoning after eating lunch. I was unable to go to the NYE event i bought tickets for, and was unable to keep solid food down for two days. I'm hoping it was just a fluke with the restaurant, but it was truly an inconvenient time to be sick. read more

I ordered delivery from this place and I'm glad that they are still open for business. I ordered Crab Rangoon, Egg drop soup and orange chicken for my entree. Food came in on time and fresh however the orange chicken was lacking a little bit of seasoning but the rest of my food is great.
