I've tried a few things here before - the ggang bong gi (chili garlic chicken), the ggang bong seh-woo (chili garlic shrimp), and the jjambong are some of the main dishes I tried since this is a Korean-Chinese restaurant. None of them were all that good. The jjambong lacked the kick it should have. And the chili garlic dishes - the (fried and then thoroughly sauced) batter around the chicken and shrimp was really... rubbery. I don't know how else to describe it. It's just really rubbery in a way it, too, should not be. If you are looking for good jjambong and REALLY good ggangbong seh-woo, go to Hyo Dong Gak, which is on 35th. They know how to make those dishes and make them well! At Shanghai Mong, the best bet is the jja-jjang myun (black bean noodles). Even Hyo Dong Gak can't beat Shanghai Mong's. Like many have noted in their reviews here, the jja jjang myun noodles have the right consistency/chewiness and the sauce is delicious. I'd recommend going for the Sam Sun Jja Jang (where they throw in shrimp and beef along with the other chopped up onions, etc in the sauce). This is a Korean operated Chinese Restaurant. Look at the restaurant as a Korean restaurant with Chinese kicks..... It is nicely decorated (what a change from the usual dingy Chinese restaurants). Had Jjambong and Sweet Potato tangsooyook (sweet and sour beef). They were good but felt like they were too "Americanized", especially the jjambong. Whenever I go to a Korean style Chinese restaurant, there are only a handful of dishes that I usually get. The most typical being jja-jang-myun (noodles in black bean sauce), jjam-bbong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and kkam-ppoong-seh-oo (deep fried sweet and sour shrimp). You really can't go wrong with these 3 dishes. Boy was I wrong. Being that I am very indecisive, I was so happy to see that they have a half/half option for the jja-jang-myun and jjam-bbong, where a bowl with a divider down the center comes out with one side being jja-jang-myun, and the other side is jjam-bbong. Yay...I don't have to choose just one! They both tasted ok...a little bit on the bland side, but it wasn't bad. But, the kkam-ppoong-seh-oo here was the WORST I'VE EVER TASTED IN MY LIFE. Seriously, I never knew someone could mess this up so badly. The deep fried shrimp didn't have the texture of something that had just been fried. The batter was SO thick and chewy, I wouldn't be surprised if they just microwaved a bunch of shrimp at once, and kept it under a heat lamp all night. Even Panda Express does this dish better. I might be back if there's no other Korean style Chinese place in the area...but I definitely won't be ordering the deep fried sweet and sour shrimp here ever again. read more

I can't say anything about it was awing in any way, however i DO give them points for using what seemed like fresh seafood (and not the frozen bagged garbage some places use). I don't think I'd ever actually eat IN there though as it was very stuffy and there CLEARLY was a ventilation issue (even picking food up my clothes stunk of like grease or junk food). They can make the jjajangmyun vegetarian if you ask them to but since they have to make the sauce separately they charge you extra, so you pay the same as seafood jjajang. Which is not cool, they should be more accommodating especially since the finished product is basically just onions and sauce. That being said it tasted very good!! read more

Mehh... I liked Hyo Dong Gak a lot better for Jja Jang Myun (Black Bean Noodles), Tang Soo Yook (Swt and Spicy Pork) and Ggan Poong Gee Shrimp (Swt and spicy breaded shrimp). The Jja Jang Myun noodles here are not cooked al dente (kindy mushy) and are too uniform and thin. Also, I don't think the sauce is as rich and flavorful as it is at Hyo Dong Gak. The Ggan Poong Gee was kind of soggy and bland. However, my bro and bf had the Jjam Ppong and they both agreed to the broth tasting a little better than Hyo Dong Gak's. The other positive attribute of Shanghai Mong is you can order 1/2 Jjam Ppong and 1/2 Jja Jang Myun as 1 entree. read more

This place is a fusion/Chinese restaurant. As soon as you enter, it looks like a normal restaurant, however, since I went by myself, the escorted me to the next room. The next room was a circular room with their tables and chairs facing the walls. It was beautifully designed with mirrors and pictures. Really surprised me so I liked the decor. When they brought out the free appetizers, they were OK. Nothing special about them. However, when my order (I ordered the fried shrimp w/ lemon sauce) arrived with the hot and sour soup and brown rice, it was DELICIOUS! I love sauces and their sauce made me a fan. Definitely will go back to this place. The service was also great. They made no mistakes and my waitress was sweet and pleasant. On a side note, I believe they are open 24 hours. We ordered Jjam Jja Myun -- half JaJang Myun (dry noodles topped with a black-bean pork and veggie sauce) and half Jjampong (hot & med-spicy seafood noodle soup). These two dishes seem to be their most popular menu options, and this half-and-half choice specifically targets the indecisive or the curious. The jajang myun was mostly onion. I didn't sense any meat really -- and there wasn't much depth of flavor for the dish, but the noodles were a fantastic texture. The jjampong had the same noodles but in the soup they were mushy. I personally don't think the flavors in the two side-by-side dishes were really complementary, but my friend disagrees. So....again....you be the judge. The lettuce wraps are absurdly expensive for what they are. The flavor is super artificial, the filling is sparse, and the lettuce leaves weren't patted dry so I was half-drinking water when eating it. It is usually a simple & fantastic dish, but not in this restaurant. Service wasn't bad, but they were slow & reluctant to bring water. This place is an asian fusion. They have Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese dishes. I had the Jjajang combo and it was soooo good and relatively inexpensive. Would definitely come back to try something else. The only downside is the staff definitely rushed us because it is so small and we took up one of the bigger tables bc we were a group of 7 or 8. This review is solely based on takeout. We wanted to pick up some fresh food & eat it at our friends rooftop. We ordered the fried chicken, general tso and dumplings. We also had some vegetable rice which was bland. The restaurant is cute and well set up, the servers were nice and attentive. It is supposedly a mix of Chinese and Korean food. Couldn't really tell but maybe more Chinese. They did give the traditional Korean free appetizers but there were only 3 dishes, one being Kim Chee. Fried dumpling appetizer was nothing special. Shared a bunch of dishes including seafood delight, Mongolian beef, crispy duck, shrimp and tofu, and fried rice crust. They were all okay but the chef definitely was skimping on the meat/seafood. All the dishes came with a handful of shredded lettuce of some sort to take up space and had too many vegetables rather than meat. The fried rice crust was the best which was like a soup dish. The rice was good though...it was brown rice with occasional black colored rice in between. Flipping through the menu, there are a lot of expensive dishes as well into the $30-40 range (definitely to share) but probably why Menupages rated this place as expensive. Best value would be to eat family style. It came out to $18 per person for 1 app and 5 entrees. The only reason this place may deserve 2.5 stars is because the food came out amazingly fast. I just went to this place with couple of my friends for a food. And we found this place . we order 3 dish and all come out not the same times. And when the 1st and 2nd dish come out it come with rice. But when we try to eat the rice. The rice is smelly and taste sour.I already inform one of the staff and they just go take it and not even apologize that something wrong with that rice. The replace rice still smell same. So we don't eat that. Then when we ask for the check. The guy just include the tips on the bills. I ask him. Why it's supposed 18%. By law if a group of 5 people or more u can charge. Came on a Saturday afternoon with my wife and I ordered the General Tso's chicken and she had the Kimchi Fried rice which was good. The General Tso's arrived after only 4 minutes which should have been the first indicator of quality. Good quality food should take some time to prepare. What I received was mushy chicken slathered in tomato/ketchup sauce. For $25 the quality of my order was definitely lacking. K-town, how glorious you are with your 24/7 noodle shops, electronic signs and karaoke joints! A couple friends and I went to experience Shanghai Mong last night. We weren't disappointed. I was immediately seated toward the back, even though my friends had yet to arrive. The decor was pleasing -- I especially liked the middle room with it's circular couch and one-top seating against the walls. The table where we were sat had a glass divider installed behind it which was a nice touch -- definitely didn't notice the comings and goings of the waitstaff from the kitchen. Free kimchi and other pickled delights were enjoyable. We split the fried dumplings and all agreed they were delicious and possibly the best we've had in the city! Wish we would've ordered a dipping sauce too, because plain soy sauce didn't cut it. Food came out hot and quick -- we ordered the Shanghai chicken (very tasty -- with a very generous dose of hot peppers!), spicy noodles that I didn't try enough of to give a fair assessment, and the split bowl black bean noodles and spicy seafood soup. The spicy seafood soup was really tasty -- although I only got one shrimp, but an enormous mussel which made up the shortcomings in the seafood part of this soup. The black bean sauce was also good, but not as life changing as I anticipated. The only downside was that the service was lacking. We weren't offered water until late in our meal (Sapporo saved the day) and definitely weren't offered our check (perhaps we should've just bee-lined to the front to pay?) or dessert. I did check out the desserts earlier, and wasn't enticed by their caramelized fruit offerings. Never tried anything like this before, so perhaps we missed out on something great. I had the vegetable fried dumplings as an appetizer, which were okay - crispy and not oily, but would prefer more vegetable taste. The Shanghai-style spicy Ma Pao Tofu is a favorite of mine here, though on this occasion it was a little less spicy and seemed slightly more oily than I recall. So kitschy. Obscenely red everything and waitresses in uncomfortably Chinese outfits are unnerving. They're probably thinking why can't they wear a hanbok instead. There are about 10 seats that face the wall with a mirror in front of you at eye level so you basically stare at yourself while you eat to see how embarrassing it is you're chowing down alone. To make matters worse there's a rotund sofa in the middle where guests are brought there to wait for their seats. What happened to waiting at the door?? You want to make others uncomfortable with us looking at their backs while they eat?? It is an extremely odd space. The interior designer must've been on crack cuz it's way too bizarre for an eatery. Anyway, the food. Not bad but not impressive. I usually get the jajajangmyun which is satisfying but I wouldn't say is the star of the menu. I've also had the nengmyun which are cold noodles and it's alright. It wasn't repulsive but I wouldn't want to order that again. There are times where I got the seafood noodles which I thought was tasty but the noodles were a tad....something. I'd say it's a bit too commercial if that makes any sense. It struck me as something to eat and leave quickly. It lacks authenticity. My main issue is that we felt very rushed. Our appetizer came minutes after ordering and we were initially impressed with the service. However, a bite into the appetizer our food dishes arrived.
