I went to shanghai a few weeks ago with my boyfriend and best friend one night after we were told how amazingly good the food was and how the person used to go there all the time when she was younger and that she swore by it.. first off, we walk in and wait to be seated.. The seating happened pretty quickly.. but at the expense of the couple that was waiting in front of us sitting off to the side, which i didn't notice until turning around at our table to see the mans irritated face.. which I don't blame After escorting us to our table our waitress rudely tells my boyfriend "You sit down please" when he was waiting for me to take my jacket off and move in the booth first.. that annoyed me. Then when we were ordering, me and my boyfriend ended up picking the same thing.. some chicken and vegetable thing over rice. So the waiter informs us that the portions are large and told us we should share.. (that's me putting it nicely, he was pretty rude and demanding about it) So after going back and forth him, we decided we'd just share.. portions were not huge at all.. probably smaller than what you would get at a takeout Chinese place. not sharable at least.. my friend ended up having more food than us. The Food wasn't amazing at all.. average at best and defiantly not worth the money. so sharing worked out great for us because I would of been way more upset paying for 2 bad dishes.. Actually we probably could of just walked out and not paid since my boyfriend had to track down someone to give us our check after waiting 30 mins + Judging by the other reviews and my friends comment, maybe at one point in time this place was run well and had better service.. but needless to say that's not the case anymore... Definitely a hole-in-the wall, but the food is great. Not the usual greasy food which is nice. They have a nice selection to choose from as well. If you like Curry, you should try it here. I have not tried the Sushi bar but have been getting Chinese food from Shang Hai for years. read more

Well, hmmm. This place is mixed in my opinion. --I like the all-you-can-eat idea and price ($20 for dinner) especially when it is to order BUT when we order something please bring it out....you forgot 4 items and then had to ask 3 times for it --I like the variety of rolls BUT each chef seems to have his own version of it. We ordered a rock-and-roll in the beginning of our meal and one at the end of our meal, both were TOTALLY different not only in appearance but in ingredients too! --the sushi was ok, not bad but not great. Everything tasted fresh so that was not an issue... the inconsistency was a bummer but not the end of the world--Just ordered another roll and there were 6 of us so someone is bound to eat it. --the service was mediocre. We had to ask several times for items like soup, never brought our tea and left several items out of our order... -- in conclusion- it wasn't a bad experience it just wasn't great. If you want an inexpensive sushi fix and don't care really about the experience...this is probably the place to go. If you are seeking a great sushi experience.. go somewhere else! read more

Service was horrible. Nothing against the busser or whatever they are called but she spoke no English and made us feel uncomfortable because the server is the same guy in the front desk i guess and she just kept looking at him and than at us. We were the only people there by the way. So service shouldn't have been that bad. Than a cook came out to take our order after 15-20 minutes waiting. She didnt write anything down so she kept asking us 3 times what i wanted. The guy at the front finally apologizes for him not taking our order AFTER we are up and paying. I usually take pictures of the food but i was too hungry and pissed to add any. The food was decent. Nothing WOW. I would probably come back to try the sushi side. We got drinks right away and after ten minutes 2 people came in and were seated, served appetizers and orders taken within the next ten minutes. I ordered beef chow fun for takeout on a Saturday evening. The price was very reasonable, however, the food was mediocre. I found 3 very small pieces of beef, the dish had mostly noodles and onions. Very disappointed in the food. I'm new to the neighborhood so I'm still checking out the local restaurants. This is one restaurant that I'll probably skip in the future. This is a fantastic place for caringly prepared Chinese food and sushi. Not only do they season their proteins to perfection, but the variety of options is great. One of the other things that makes Shang hai stand out is the online ordering. You can order Chinese and sushi at the same time and it is usually ready within 15-20 minutes for you to pick up. The staff is always friendly and eager to help. I highly recommend the sesame beef. It has a perfect balance between sweet and spicy and is never soggy. Portion sizes are large which always leaves left overs. Stop by and enjoy. read more

I'm not happy about writing this. I've never really been a HUGE fan of Shang Hai but it's my husbands favorite place so I would go since the food was passable. The event that led me to write this review happened about a month ago and I've been going back and forth on if I should put it on-line because it really was the first time I had a problem with them. It really still bugs me though so I figure I'll "Yelp" it. It was a Saturday like any other Saturday. The husband and I were craving Chinese. I'm really simple - all I really like from his place are the pot stickers so that's what I ordered. Usually the pot stickers are nice and crispy and flavorful. I picked up our order (he ordered much more than me) and went on home to enjoy it with the TV. I got home only to see that the pot-stickers were limp, grey and covered in grease. I went back to Shang Hai and showed them to the employee. I think it was the owner that I spoke with. I picked one of them up and it put a tear in the pot-sticker as the grease dripped off. He apologized and told me he will have them make new ones and to give him about 10 minutes. My new pot-stickers came out and he showed them to me. They were still limp, grey and covered in grease. It is my suspicious that they didnt make new ones because the tear from my showing them the grease was still on one of the pot stickers. I told the employee that this isnt how they are supposed to be. I was being very polite because I was mostly just confused. He shook his head at me and told me that this is how they have been forever. (I have been eating at Shang Hai for over 5 years so I know that's not how they have been "forever"). I told him I would just like my money back then. I went home and didnt have lunch. I'm giving the place 3 stars ONLY because my husband enjoys the food. If it were just me I would downgrade to 2 stars. I will probably end up giving them another chance for my husband and will update this review after I have done so but I'm not at all excited about it. read more

First and last. Save yourself the trouble and go a few more blocks to Ijji. The negative reviews I read all have common threads with mine. I've never eaten at a restaurant where my waitress pulled up a table next to mine to much in between helping people, handling our food and touching dirty dishes and then putting clean ones away. Ordered items on the slip never received. Sat at a both next to an ice machine with a loud buzzing fan noise. They ran out of salmon eggs. The flying fish eggs were semi frozen and had a dipping dots ice cream texture. The rice was soggy and broke apart before I could dip into soy sauce. The waitress gave another table my handroll only to realize her own mistake few minutes later. Nice knowing my food sat while strangers talked over it. read more

Hadn't been to Shanghai is almost a year but was craving their General's Chicken so I ordered two lunches to go. We were both very disappointed. The sauce used is very different, which made us wonder if there was a change of ownership or change in cooking staff/recipes used. It no longer tasted like what had been served for years. Way back when, Shanghai and Szechuan Garden (Reno) were owned by the same couple, who subsequently sold both restaurants. The food tho' still tasted the same at both. Today's General's Chicken tasted like it was made primarily with chili sauce (open bottle, pour it in) and was more that color than the dark sauce previously used. There were more seeds, like with chili sauce, and each lunch had only one dried red chili. It did have a little more of a kick than before, which we liked. The hot and sour soup and fried rice were similar to what we remembered. We'll give it another try but will order something different for another taste test. read more

Sushi House was my #1 place to eat sushi when in Sparks. OmG!! This place has gone to shit. One guy behind the bar preparing food had a large amount of chew in his mouth. He was talking and laughing while standing over the food. At one point the man even hacked up something and spit it out in the trash can in between the bars. I had to request that one man to not prepare our food. The two other gentleman very nice and followed all the health department regulations. read more

My first time in here not that many people one' lady sitting at the bar and a couple back in the restaurant. Definitely the best price for all you can eat in Town. The Sushi Guy was very helpful the waitress was very attentive. not a real adventurous menu but everything I had was good. I especially liked the mussels an order is only 2 those so keep that in mind. Update second time in they had a brand new guy making sushi behind the counter unfortunately he's stoned out of his mind on his first day. I don't think he'll be around long. read more

I eat here every month or two and the food is always very good. But, tonight i ordered vegetable Mu Shu and the server didn't know how to combine things (roll the vegetables into the pancakes, burrito style). When i mentioned that I eat here with some regularity, she looked me in the eye and said she's been here for two years and has never seen me. Well, maybe she's been working lunch. But, she laughed when I said that the server knows how to use spoons like chopsticks to complete to dish. Instead of being a pain, I just let her be on her way and did it myself. This place was more of hidden place, not going to lie my boyfriend & I were sketched out about it. We even considered walking right back out. The reviews didn't help either but the staff was extremely friendly & funny. They checked in on us every couple of mins. The sushi chef even came to check on us. I am in shock. I ordered online delivery through a food delivery service, and about 15 minutes after placing the order I received a phone call from the food delivery service. They informed me that the restaurant did not know how to make one of their menu items that i had ordered. They then handed their phone to a restaurant employee who *asked me what was in the dish*. I looked on their menu and read them what it said. They said they could make it, then we disconnected the call. I am still having trouble believing that happened even though I just got done eating the food. As for the food, it was less than okay, and not nearly worth the price I paid to get it. The wasabi was piped into the shape of a rose. I wonder how much of their exorbitant prices go for that. Also, the wasabi was smashed into the same container with the sushi, so I had sushi with wasabi on it even though I specifically didn't want that. To finish it off, the wantons were *chewy*, not crisp at all! I certainly will never order from these people again. read more

This restaurant has become our go to restaurant. The servers are always so polite and welcoming. The food is AMAZING!!! They have the best sweet and sour chicken out of every Chinese restaurant I've tried. They also have the best dumplings in all of reno/sparks.
