It felt like something has changed with the menu. The quality of food is still delicious. We noticed that some of the portions were *ever so slightly* smaller than before; ie the ching chiang cured pork is always one that we get, but the cubes are sliced a bit smaller than before. It's really the last authentic Shanghai cuisine restaurant standing in the SG Valley. There were at least 4 or 5 as of 3 years ago, but the other ones either closed or moved. Tonight's occasion was to celebrate a family member's birthday, and we were seated in the main dining room. The new complaint is the AC was VERY anemic and weak, not much airflow, and it was a hot day to begin with. The main dining room was pretty much filled, so the collective body most likely contributed to the suffocating air in the dining room. When we left, it was such a relief to walk outside, even with the sun still out, the air was much cooler and refreshing than inside the restaurant. The old complaint is still the serving staff, don't know if the owner, 鹿強，is aware, but there's not much passion or positive energy with the wait staff. They're all pretty much stone faced and downcast, the vibe is almost like they're prisoners forced to work there. This used to be Coco's and now it looks nothing like Coco's. Very nice decor, clean, and modern. Seating feels a bit crowded. They have private banquet rooms available for large parties. Highly recommend making reservations as this place was packed. Food has good presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed this place along with my ABC friends. They do not frequent these more fine dining type of establishments with older customers and more ethnic people that barely speak English. The waiters did help with my broken Mandarin and were very good in making me feel like everything was good. But the food was anything but good; it was GREAT. Lots of variety of tastes and plated to look good as well as it tastes. My friend said it's better than any of the Chinese food from back east coast. I came here with my parent's Shanghainese friends and loved all of the food. We ordered enough to fill our whole table and the total was much, much less than I expected. I think there was a full meal x 2 we took to go with us because we couldn't eat more. My favorites: * Pork belly (YUM) - pair it with some rice * Crab * I don't remember the name... but it was a mix of noodles, meat, and veggies (in Chinese, it starts with "jiao") * Chrysanthemum Tea This place is pretty well-lit, lively - your typical Asian sit-down restaurant (think Capital Seafood). Service was solid - never had to wait too long for someone to come by and check on us. Everyone was friendly and helpful. This place is gone downhill significantly. Interior decor is still great though. First they discontinued big menu books to laminated menu paper. They usually place appetizers but now is gone. Waiters used to be attentive but now like whatever attitude. One bowl has old rice at the bottom. That is sanitary issue. Food is great but the restaurant needs to keep up the standard. I came on a weekday for lunch and parking was very easy. I tried a few items and started with chrysanthemum tea which was nice and flavorful. Black pepper steak cubes: served on a skillet with thinly slice onions, the dish was overall pretty good. The beef was tender and the crunch from the skillet made it good. Pan fried buns: the bottom of the buns are coated in sesame seeds and pan fried so as such there was a strong sesame flavor. Inside, the pork was good but the inside was just very dry. Braised (hong shao) tofu: the dish was on the salty end and had some crunchy pieces even though it was a sauce based dish. I think there was too much cornstarch as the sauce was really thick. Service was okay - the chef forgot one item we ordered as it was not transferred over from the printer. There was also a moment when cigarette smoke filled in the whole dining room as I assume someone was smoking by an open door. Overall everything was just okay. read more

Prices on the high side. Portions are on the small side. The one dish I would not recommend is SongShu Yu (squirrel fish). The sweet and sour sauce was way overwhelming and I couldn't taste the fish. This restaurant is doing very well now, and there's always a wait when I go. We went on a Friday night and waited for about half an hour. I think the long wait is mostly because their tables are quite large, making it harder for parties of two or four to get seated quickly. We ordered the special homemade pickled fish, original shrimp, and stir-fried vegetables. The food at this Shanghainese restaurant is excellent. We were celebrating a week before Chinese New Year and wanted to try a new restaurant to us, which we've been hearing good things about. We arrived before 11:00 AM opening just to be sure we got a nice table. The room was spectacular, but not necessarily in size, but clean and inviting. The food was served hot and fast, which is so nice to receive nowadays. Of the various courses serviced, the seaweed filet of fish was a standout in its freshness and crunch. Other notable entrees were the meatball soup, porkbelly with whole eggs and the fresh fish served in a sweet red sauce. As we were seated next to the bar, it is probably the best seat in the house to socialize and not be in the middle of the busy service and room full of other diners. My long loved Shanghainese restaurant. It feels home to come here. Ambiance is very very old Shanghai feel. Food and ambiance are 5 star. I took one star off because of the service and price....sorry Favorite dish is always the braised pork in soy sauce Hong Shao rou. It is perfectly seasoned and colored. Juicy inside. Lots of restaurants make this meat very dry. But they handled it perfectly here. I also like it that it is not overly sweetened. Just perfect. The service always feels somehow under par for a beautiful Chinese restaurant like this. The waiters are mostly Shanghainese. The original waiters are mostly replaced. I feel that the current waiters could use some more smile especially when greeting the guests when we are entering the door. Maybe it's the arrogance in Shanghainese? Anyways, I still love the food. I enjoy their expensive food, but service not quite. I once waited for 40+ minutes and while we (7 people) were almost there, I asked about peanut allergy, he told me there is no guarantee (peanut free) and told me there were more customers ahead of me. Clearly he didn't want to service us. Another time, I have ordered delivery and mistakenly marked store pickup, I canceled the order and immediately called them to explain. He picked up and scolded me for ordering and canceling. They do have above average food in LA area, but they are so ignorant and not caring, I guess they don't worry about loosing customers. Luckily our Shanghainese friend was there to order the dishes. Aside from the fried pork and dumpling dish (which is still good but just a bit generic) in my photo section all the dishes are recommended. This was one of the best Shanghainese meals I've ever had! We came with a large group of about 15 people so they let us use the private room in the back. Great service and the food came quickly after we ordered. My cousins and uncle/aunt ordered like 20 items from the menu, banquet-style. Our favorite items were the pan-fried buns, fried fish, salted mixed Shanghai rice (like fried rice with bok choy, SO flavorful), Shanghai Style Sesame Pancake, and seafood soup. Shanghai chicken was good, bean curd roll good but super oily cause it was in chicken juice (like a super condensed chicken fat that was straight fat after a night in the fridge), Shanghai style spareribs weren't really Shanghai style (like sweet and sour pork) and way too fatty. But the pork and vegetable rice was tasty and not too fatty or oily at all. Pan fried buns looked great, but not crispy bottomed. We were planning to celebrate my FIL's birthday at Chang's Garden, but it was booked for a private event. Pretty much accidentally stumbled upon this place and so glad we did! TL;DR my in laws and husband are from Hangzhou (right next to Shanghai) and approve of this place. This a nicer restaurant to eat quality authentic Chinese food with modern food presentation, without breaking the bank. The atmosphere is traditional, but more elevated (and clean) than your average Chinese banquet restaurant, though unpretentious (i.e. not Meizhou Dongpo status). On a Saturday lunch, the place was full but without a wait, and most diners appeared to be upper middle class Chinese people. I would definitely take my parents or out-of-town relatives here. They do have several private rooms for larger parties. The food is pricier but very fair. You get what you pay for in quality and presentation. People should know that Shainghainese food supposed to be generally lighter in flavor. It's no Chinese American takeout. Shanghailander braised pork with brown sauce (4.5/5): The flavor was great, texture relatively tender, and the eggs were very flavorful. They do use a fattier pork belly (like the top is a big slab of fat), but it does have all 5 layers of a quality cut. Very good overall. Fish fillet with seaweed (5/5): Almost every table ordered this. The batter is airy with a perfect delicate crisp on the outside and mild seaweed flavor, without being overly oily. The fish on the inside is very tender. They give you white pepper on the side for dipping. Shaoxin wined chicken (5/5): Poached chicken marinated in wine. Super tender, not overly alcoholic, with a crisp and chewy skin. House special hot pot (4/5): The soup base itself was really tasty, with an assortment of fish and beef balls, shrimp, fresh egg wrapper dumplings, bean thread noodles, napa, ham, pork skin, and even sea cucumber. Would hesitate to recommend it to a non-Asian because the items are pretty niche Chinese. Pretty good for a chilly day, but not amazing. The clay pot it comes in is huge, but the dish itself is also pretty pricey. Could feed at least 10 people. It's nice that the server will portion and serve the bowls for you. Crab Tofu (2/5): I think the sauce is made with crab roe? But I was expecting there to be actual meat. The crab flavor and texture was barely detectable. I might as well have just been eating a vegetarian dish of tofu with peas and carrots dish. Not worth it for the price. Shanghailander pan fried buns: We ordered this for my kid, who seemed to like the outer bun. No rating because I didn't actually try it. I will say these are some of the best looking Shanghai pan fried buns I've seen. Service is slightly better than the average Chinese restaurant in that they'll pack your leftovers for you, serve you the soup, and don't rush you to leave. For kids, they only provide a high chair and there's a changing table in the women's bathroom. Parking is easy since they have their own lot. read more

The fish came with a side of pepper salt so you could season to your taste. 90% fish, 10% batter - very good. PORK BELLY - Very fatty and tender, full of flavor and shanghainese style so it was pretty sugary but delicious and tastes great with rice. STIR FRIED STRING BEANS - A little salty but great portion size, good for sharing between at least 4-5. PAN FRIED BUNS - These were ok in my opinion, still yummy but not amazing. CRISPY SHRIMP - Deliciously fried shrimp (and you can eat the shell)! The shrimp is very sugary sweet but it's one of my favorites here. I love the service here.
