Shapiro's is one of my favorite Indianapolis lunches. So it is a treat to see them in the airport and get some tasty treat to go on a foodless flight. When I fly from Indy I do not have to settle for your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine or nuts in a bag from the newsstand. Love that. Had a bagel for breakfast there last week instead of whatever you can find elsewhere. Smiled all morning. Last trip I actually had a pastrami on rye. Could not care less if it smelled up the whole plane, it was delicious aroma! Yes, this branch is abbreviated and not full on but face it you are in an airport. read more

IND has pretty good food for an airport, to begin with. I love how they have filled it with local restaurant concepts and Shapiros is one of my favorites. This local sandwich shop is an Indianapolis icon and the airport location features much of the food people have come to love. Personally, I'm a big fan of their breakfast as I'm usually there in the morning. They use delicious fresh bagels and the meats are delicious. In the afternoon, I'm a big fan of the pastrami. Yum! As with any airport location, it is run by a large airport concessions company. That can be good or bad. The folks at Shapiro's tend to be (or at least appear to be) well trained and friendly. The product and service are very consistent. Several other reviewers have noted the price and it is a bit on the steep side. However, I don't find it to be out of line with typical airport pricing for a similar product. read more

I had been told for a while, leading up to my Indy trip that I HAD to go to Shapiro's while in the city. My time came and went, and I wasn't able to go, and then at the airport, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Shapiro's and had time on my hands so I grabbed some lunch. Holy crap, this place is amazing! The most difficult part was choosing what I was going to eat. Being a vegetarian, I could not get any of their famous meat sandwiches but I was all set with the other options... I ordered their mac and cheese, vegetable soup (which was hearty and oh so tasty), a pickle, and a lemon bar. I took my goods over to the bar overlooking the planes and indulged myself into the great meal I had just purchased. So... I join the fans of Shapiro's, and even though I didn't make it to the downtown deli, I am so thankful to have found another option at the airport. read more

I discovered Shapiro's while researching the Indy airport on the day before a business trip. I was fortunate that my flight deplaned in Concourse B, so before going to baggage claim, I made a quick side trip to Shapiro's and I'm glad I did. The pastrami on rye was the real deal -- on par with the east coast, where I'm from, and easily better than anything I've had in the Twin Cities, where I live now. (I've never seen a slicer in an airport restaurant before, that's for sure.) The two young woman working the concession were a bit on the surly side, but I can let that go when the food is this good. They just seemed a little bored. I'm already looking forward to eating there Tues. before the trip home (and mulling how to travel with a sandwich on the plane for pastrami-loving younger daughter). Had the roast beef sandwich. It was fresh-sliced, big and very good. The macaroni and cheese was good but could've been fresher. The staff was friendly and efficient. Sure, it's more expensive than your typical NY deli, but it's in the airport; what did you expect? Would eat here again. read more

Would love to be able to give a real review of the food, but cannot because the two workers at the airport location on 7/29 took it upon themselves to close early. Walked up to the Schapiros in B Concourse at 7:20. There was a family of 5 in front of me. The chairs were already on tables, and one of the employees was mopping. The woman behind the counter told the family there was only cold sandwiches left. I asked about Pastrami. The woman replied, "We turn off the hot food at 7:30," to which I replied, "Its 7:20!" She said, "We only have cold sandwiches now," to which I replied, "But you just told me you shut those off at 7:30." She looked at me and said, "Have a nice day!" Now, considering that she said they shut off the hot food at 7:30, and it was 7:20, my take is either Schapiros doesn't care that their employees are losing $ for them, isn't aware that their employees are driving away business, or doesn't care that they are paying people to not do their job. I've been told the Pastrami is Iconic. Well certainly some of the employees are not. read more

In terms of ripoff airport food, this is by far the worst I've ever experienced. The "sourdough" was basically grocery store wonderbread, and the turkey was more than likely that fake, salt-pumped turkey restaurants get a GFS. Save your money and buy one of those "on-the-go sandwiches." It'll be the same quality and more than likely cheaper. read more

Came here for a quick bite on a recent layover. Staff moved us through the line fairly quickly. I got a tuna salad sandwich and my fiancé got the turkey. The bread was fresh as were most of the ingredients. The tuna salad was piled on too high and was really enough for 2-3 sandwiches. Also, expect super high prices here ($10-13 per sandwich). Not a bad stop for airport sandwiches, but not the best. read more

I've ate here twice before early morning flights. Both times, service wasn't the greatest- employees didn't seem too happy in general. Maybe it was too early for them to be nice. Bagels are good, but if you are there early in the morning and haven't had your coffee yet, make sure you remember that Shapiro's is a kosher deli. So that means the "bacon" on the bacon egg and cheese bagels is actually turkey bacon... which can come as quite an unwelcome surprise if you don't know (or if it is too early for you to realize you are at a Kosher deli). I wish the menu board made note that it is turkey bacon for those weary early morning travelers. :( I usually like turkey bacon, but I didn't find theirs to be very good at all... I guess maybe kosher turkey bacon tastes different from other turkey bacon? Next time I go, I will just order a plain bagel with cream cheese. Nice to have good bagels at the airport, but just make sure you know what you are ordering! read more

Pastrami sandwich is fine but tastes a little dry to me. Rueben is very, very good. This warm sandwich with sauerkraut is delicious. I usually get it with Swiss cheese on rye. The chicken noodle soup is hit and miss. Once I had it and it seemed like they forgot to add salt. Shapiro's is a solid option inside the Indy airport. read more

At the Indianapolis International Airport, outside of Concourse A and B is a circular public area with lots of fast food choices. Inside Concourse A, however, are other eating establishments. Shapiro's Delicatessen is one and since it was early morning i had the bagel with egg, cheese, and sausage. The price was a little high - $7.99 - for what I got but it was tasty. The counter girl slices the bagel, then assembles the sandwich. The sausage and eggs appeared to be pre-cooked. The woman who was ringing up the orders was doing her best to handle the line since there were two girls assembling orders and they were quicker than her, especially since most people pay with cards. So why only two stars? Neither girl assembling sandwiches seemed very friendly or overly customer service oriented. I know it was about 6am but still. AND...while eating my breakfast sandwich I found a hair. Neither girl had a hairnet on. SO next time I may brave the enormous Starbucks line or just go to the Mickey D's in the public area. read more

This review is for the airport Shapiros. Let me first say that I've been eating at shapiros consistently since I was born 40yrs ago. Let me follow that up by saying their corned beef is famous...but the last two times I have gotten a corned beef sandwich at this airport location it was tough and NOT tender like it should be. For that reason, I'm forced to give the airport Shapiros only 2 stars. Until they fix their rubbery corned beef, I recommend that you go to the downtown main Shapiros for an awesome deli experience. read more

I had the Reuben sandwich, which was pretty good. But at $15, definitely not worth it. It used to be a dollar cheaper, but I guess $14 wasn't ridiculous enough, so they made it $15. read more

Last two times the NY Ruben​ was half the normal size. At that price not worth it. Too bad as it was a great treat. But they either need to adjust the price or lose business. And I'm currently flying every week. read more

Absolutely terrible. I'm a big fan of Shapiro's . The original downtown location is absolutely legit. I've been to some pretty decent delis to include Katz's Deli in NYC. The downtown Shapiro's is just as good. The airport version is a complete flop. Tried it twice. They just can't get it right. Cold pastrami on soggy bread. Service here was fast and friendly, so no complaints there. But what I'll remember most about my roast beef sandwich is not how it tasted (not really all that special), but how ridiculously priced (even for an airport) it was. Would like to recommend, but just can't do it. read more

My family has been going to Shapiro's for decades. Their west 86th st location (R.I.P.) was excellent....so is the Carmel spot. However, my mother and sister just went downtown yesterday and....well, there is no point in me describing all the specific things they tried: the quality of all the food was VERY POOR. I'm a chef so there are 2 possible problems: either 1) they have different suppliers for that location (unlikely), or 2) the folks running that place and working their have no business working in the restaurant industry. This is a brand and reputation killer. So, consider this an open letter to management to get someone down there and stage an intervention.... go to Carmel (or possibly the airport location) but avoid downtown until it gets sorted seriously, send 'em into the Board room with Trump and someone WILL get fired C- Update: I recently heard that the Carmel location is closing -- so now we're all screwed. read more

I don't usually set my expectations high for an airport deli but "Wow!" I ordered a corned beef sandwich on rye with spicy mustard and it was slamming! It's my go to spot when I fly in and out of Indianapolis. Corned beef was hot and the rye was super fresh with a slightly chewy crust. I thought maybe this was a lucky shot in the dark but each time I visit I am pleased. Service is your typical slo mo speed but thy are courteous and friendly. I have been to all the best places in NY and for an airport in Indianapolis it's very satisfying. Check it out! read more

Airport food is usually poor quality and overpriced. And Shapiro's is...well still overpriced, but so tasty I didn't mind. Got a pastrami on rye piled so high I couldn't even finish the chips that came with it. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the rye was tasty, but not so strong as to overpower the sandwich. Got a Chop salad which was pretty good; I do tend for bigger pieces of meat and given how much meat is on the sandwiches I thought there may be more on the salad. I also ordered a side of Mac and cheese and it was horrible. Hands down worst Mac and cheese I've ever had. I think what happened is they didn't cook out the flour when they made the cheese sauce or something; it had a flour/sweet taste to it. Mac and cheese was just not edible. After I come back from my world travels, I know there is a sure thing waiting for me in the Indy airport. Fresh sliced pastrami and rye thrills me. Sometimes, for whatever reason, the sandwiches I get here are better than the sandwiches at the downtown location. I also tend to enjoy the Carmel location more than downtown. Hmm, curious. The staff was rude. The sandwich was plain, they ran out of most of their meats, and the person making the sandwich kept on not knowing how to make the sandwiches. There was no sauce on my $20 sandwich. We ended up spending $60 for three mediocre sandwiches!!! read more

Had a very sub optimal experience at this Shapiro's this week. Went into get my usual soup prior to getting on my plane. Staff all seemed disgruntled. No one smiled. Not really listening to customers who had to ask for things multiple times. I had to ask for a slice of bread to go with my soup and when I was given bread reluctantly it was stale. Not looking forward to stopping there again but not many other good options for me in that concourse prior to a flight. read more

Wow. I got a Rubin with spicy mustard instead of thousand island and I was amazing. I had a $75 a person meal twice this week and THIS was better. Bread 5/5, corn beef 5/5, mustard 4/5, cheese 5/5. Then they toasted it. I wish there was one in Cali. read more
