We were ready for some yummy seafood dishes after we checked into our Coos Bay inn and this place did not disappoint! The concept is a little unusual in that you stand in line to order and then they will seat you in the adjoining room. We were hungry so we ordered both a Crab Cake burger and a large Local Pink Shrimp Salad to share. For utensils, they hand out a plastic fork with a paper napkin and the food is served in a paper lined metal basket. Not much dishwashing needed here! We had to ask for a knife to cut our burger so that we could share it. The portions here are huge! The crab cake burger was delicious and served with caramelized onions, avocado, lettuce, and tomato. It also came with really tasty french fries- crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with skins. So good. It also came with coleslaw but I wasn't a fan of it. The pink shrimp salad was fresh and delicious with lots of shrimp, avocado, greens, red onion, tomato, and blue cheese. Service was good - it had a family-run restaurant vibe. Over all, this restaurant was what I would consider just okay. The service was excellent, so no complaints there. As for the ambiance, it was okay, it had an odd little shop in the back of the restaurant. The food was tasty, but way over priced. $14.50 for an average sized bowl of clam chowder, with very little clam in it seemed a bit much. If you wanted bread with it, they charged you another $3.00. So we opted for the oyster crackers which were free. I don't believe I will be going back. read more

Our son's calamari had to be returned - rubbery sticks (we heard another customer say it was frozen from Sysco). I tried one too, and was stunned how bad it was. My wife had clam chowder which was good. I had halibut fish & chips - OK not great. All of us only had water to drink. We got the bill and were stunned at an $85 bill! They charged us for the calamari. I politely brought this to the attention of the manager who arrogantly replied, "I'm not one of the owners." Sad. First thing to know here is that there are no sharks in the restaurant or store, so you will not get bitten. Have no worries about that. I saw they had Halibut on menu but it was fried. Shame to take such a great expensive fish and put it in grease so I asked the waitress if she could kindly grill it? Well...she responded....not sure...let me go back and check with the chef if he knows how to do that? OKAYYYYY.... She comes back and says sure...we will grill it for you this time, but she adds..that's not traditional. So for a minute I thought that I was breaking the Halibut Law? I took a risk. But when it came out--it was great. Perfect. There is no need to fry Halibut or anything. Salad was excellent--perfect dressing. Let's get grilled on your menu please and the added benefit is that it will also do your part to reduce health care costs in Coos Bay. Restaurant atmosphere is very casual--not a great place for a romantic dinner. I sat at the Bar to dine as I was alone. Service is efficient, not too friendly but that was okay--I was more concerned with the food quality and taste. Parking for me was on the street, parallel, in front of the restaurant. However, the fact that one of the waiters wanted to insist that there was "no possible way" that the hair that one of the people in our party found in their food immediately upon delivery to our table, could've of been from an employee (yet there was a female server walking around with no hairnet and her hair matched exactly the hair that was found in the food), and did not show any empathy for this situation, made that person feel like what she says wasn't believable, nor did he even offer to comp that persons meal for the inconvenience, is the sole reason for this rating. For a restaurant this critically lauded and considered a Coos Bay staple, the mistakes at "SharkBites" are difficult to forgive. There were lipstick marks on our water cups, sauce stains on our "clean plates", and when our food was served a flock of flies zoomed in and sat on our meals. Another feature that turned us off was the price of the food. 3 tacos shouldn't be $18! While "SharkBites" didn't insult us with meager portion sizes for the prices they charged, their food was by no means so gourmet as to be charging so much. To their credit, the "Spicy Halibut Street Tacos" were absolutely delicious. The fish was seasoned well and coated in a smoky sauce. There was an abundance of beans, cabbage, and guacamole all housed within a corn tortilla that could've been warmer. The chips and salsa served on the side were clearly fresh, and so pretty great. The "Crab Cake Benedict" looked beautiful, and it had all the elements for a great dish. However, looks are deceiving. The hollandaise sauce didn't taste like typical hollandaise - in fact, it might have been nacho cheese. The kaiser roll on the bottom instead of a proper English muffin was a major misstep: it seemed like a cheap substitute. There also seemed to be a key ingredient missing to make the dish pop, and so it was just one bland, sloppy mess. PRO TIP: order the crab cakes on their own, because they're actually made with more crab than cake and taste great. The saving grace of this brunch dish was the "fingerling potatoes". Unless "SharkBites" cleans up their act and lowers their prices, I don't see myself coming back here. Which is a real shame since their staff is real friendly and they're trying to serve higher quality food with fresh ingredients. read more

Great GLUTEN FREE place! They have a separate gluten free menu with a lot of options. A lot of people raved about the clam chowder so I tried that and it was really good! $8 for a bowl. The family tried the fish & chips (not gf). They all agreed the cod fish and chips were way better. Halibut fish & chips were NOT worth the extra $4 in their opinion. All the food was great though! We arrived here about 5pm place was empty and awaiting a dinner crowd . Looking over the specials my wife and I had chosen the fish and and baskets. It arrived in less than five minutes! We ate here two nights in a row! The first night I had shrimp tacos and my husband had the halibut tacos they were phenomenal. The food was so good we went back the second night I had grilled shrimp in garlic butter and clam chowder and my husband had the halibut sandwich with onion rings again another amazing meal. The Wife and I got a weekend away sans our little Tax Deduction to celebrate 12 years of marriage late in October and upon arrival in Coos Bay we wasted no time in finding our place for a nice dinner after checking into the hotel. Scanning the handy dandy Yelp Mobile App we quickly found SharkBites and headed the mighty Yelpmobile in that direction. Looked on the main drag through town on a one way street it shares a long strip mall with many interesting restaurants and shops. Street parking was easy and even though it was a little rainy the covered walkway was keeping nature off of us. Walking in it looked as though one side was a fish market and the other side is the restaurant, although it looks as though tables are set on both sides. Being on an anniversary trip and being all lovey-dovey we choose the darker side of the building and picked out a table in the back. The menu is chock full of great options, lots of seafood both fried and not and sandwiches and tacos and traditional baskets. Salads, burgers and desserts also dot the menu. Being purists we went with our favorite, the cod fish & chips with cole slaw (photo attached). The staff were just wonderful, attentive without being pushy and when we told them it was our first time there they took the time to explain the menu to us and give us tips about the house specialties. As soon as we ordered our drinks appeared and it didn't seem long as we talked about plans for the weekend that our food arrived with a heavenly aroma. The fish was light and flaky and not greasy at all and there was a lot of it. For $9.95 it was a deal and a half. What kept coming to me was a wonderful aroma with a hint of garlic. It wasn't the fish though, and I tried the cole slaw and it wasn't there either (although the slaw was really good), then I popped a fry in my mouth. Heaven, nirvana, eden... salty, garlicy and perfectly fried potato... these are quite possibly the best fries I have ever had. Sharkbites was the perfect start to our anniversary weekend. read more
