There is nothing wrong with my hair style it's just not what I want I don't like light hair nor frizz I love shine and weight not everyone can tame my hair but she did do a amazing job everyone was so polite, nice and it was very clean down to the restroom. I've lived in 5 cities in 4 states & Shear Ego is THE BEST salon & spa I've ever been to! I currently reside in Boston, MA, but still look forward to booking services when I visit Rochester, NY (which I do multiple times per year). It is rare to find such a phenomenal men's barbershop & spa - but impossible to find one within such a quality salon. I LOVE that there is a men's barbershop & spa here. I have searched for something similar in Boston & cannot find it. The space is big, well-maintained, tastefully decorated, comfortable, & stocked with quality products. I got my hair cut here for the first time and I had a wonderful overall experience. I wasn't sure which stylist to go to, so I called the front desk and told them my availability, price range, and services I needed done. They were quickly able to accommodate. Front desk is very friendly and knowledgeable. They were great on the phone and again in-person. I was booked with a less senior stylist, Sabrina, who was AWESOME! I have long curly hair and was looking to get a trim done. I wanted to clean up the ends, re-layer, but still keep good length. She was very honest about the impact I would feel based on the amount of inches cut (we settled on 2 inches which ended up being exactly what I needed). From the minute I sat down, we had fun and easy flowing conversation. Sabrina washed, cut, and styled my hair and I was done in 45-60 minutes! She is great and I would definitely recommend her! The salon is conveniently located in Pittsford plaza, it is clean, up-to-date, and very lively. They offer many other services here between their salon, spa, and men's club. I have gotten a pedicure here in the past ($45-$70+) and was placed in an elegant and quiet area and was given wine refreshments. Very nice touch! You get what you pay for her! read more

I've been going to shear ego for years and usually love the services I receive but my most recent cut was unfortunately not at all what I asked for. This was the photo I showed to the stylist vs. what I received. It looked ~okay~ from the front and figured It would grow out quickly but I didn't see the back of the cut until I got home. I called back immediately and was given a new appointment where the cut was "fixed" (the second stylist did a great job with what was left of my hair) but still nothing like what I had asked for. Almost all of the blonde was cut out of my hair, and 75% of my head is now shaved without any type of fade into the top. Shear ego wouldn't fix the color and I've been unable to get in touch with a manager which is why I'm leaving a one star review. read more

You will definitely spend a good amount here, but they've made every effort to make you feel comfortable. I'd probably give 4.5 stars given the price level, but if you go in expecting it, the experience will be fine. Treat yourself to a hair cut or a number of spa I options. Call ahead or use their online booking system to set up an appointment, as walk ins aren't guaranteed. I was lucky today that they had an esthetician available for a facial (though only the basic level) when I went in on a whim. They have a lovely locker room space with lockers so you don't have to drag everything with you to the room, and you could dawdle in the sauna or changing into a comfortable robe. As you wait for your specialist, you sit in a lovely "transition area" complete with tea and water station. They could provide more magazine options, but you're not there long at all. Relaxed? Check. Pampered? Check. Returning? Check, check, check! I keep coming back because I'm pleased with Shear Ego's spa service and accommodations since my first visit years ago. When you check in, the polite staff escort you to the spa area where the atmosphere is relaxed, calm and time is...what's the time? The sense of time is lost because there are no clocks in the area. I find myself wondering what the time is because I usually have the day planned, but now I keep my schedule light when I get pampered so I can enjoy my time for myself. The facilities are very clean and well kept. They provide robes and slippers to change into and they have a couple of showers and all the fixings - shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryer. There's even a dry sauna that could fit just about two people in the changing room. Just outside the changing room is a small, tastefully furnished waiting area. The dimly lit area is quiet with warm tones delivering a peaceful ambiance. They also provide granola bars, water, tea, and coffee in the area and randomly throughout the hallways. The spa rooms are also comforting to one's feng shui. The beds are heated and the sheets are soft. They also lightly play music in the background where if you close your eyes, you feel like you have escaped the monotonous days. They also have couples rooms to enjoy the experience with a special person if you desire. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I get great suggestions and information about skincare and the massages de-stress my body and I feel like I'm on cloud nine when I leave. They adjust to my requests and cater to my needs. After each service, they wait for you outside the door with a refreshing cup of water. Again, I've had great experiences at Shear Ego which is why I keep going back! read more

Still love Shear Ego for everything BUT lashes. I love Shear Ego. Best massages and hair ever! So when I wanted eyelash extensions I thought I would try them. There was no discussion on how I wanted my lashes to look afterwards. Lis started the extensions by explaining that eyelashes were an exercise in patience and she didn't have much patience so she didn't really enjoy them. Then she dropped something in the floor which I'm pretty sure she proceeded to pick up and continue to use. When she was done my eyes stung horribly. She explained she didn't put lashes on the outside corners of my eye bc my natural lashes grew so funny she couldn't get them to look right. She said I'd have to blend with mascara. When I was done the lashes were too long, sparse, heavy and went in different directions. There was no instruction on how to care for them. I tried mascara and brushing them and they looked even worse. (later I found out that actually mascara is a no no for extensions.) The first night I brushed them and 15 fell out in my sink. Four days later my eyes hurt worse and felt gritty and irritated. The lashes were patchy. I had to go somewhere else to have them removed. I did get another set elsewhere that are amazing so I now know it's NOT me and my eyes like Lis tried to make it sound. That being said... Shear Ego as a salon is amazing. They gave me a discount immediately knowing I was unhappy and when I went back 4 days later to express continued displeasure they gave me a full refund quickly and with no hassle. read more

I have been going to Sheer Ego for over 10 years now and have gotten my hair done by Jason Flugel since then. I absolutely love Jason and wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. He has never led me wrong. From different cuts to colors, we have taken my hair from being long to short back to long again, and everything in between over the years and I always look and feel good after he works his magic. He is genuine, caring, and I have enjoyed hearing about his wife and kids too when I'm in for an appointment. Jason is a 5 star. I knocked 2 stars off because Sheer Ego is overpriced. If it weren't for Jason I wouldn't go there. Some of the women are also snotty and there seems to be turnover with front desk staff and assistants. Never the same faces visit to visit. I also feel the decor is stuffy and not very welcoming feeling. You don't get the warm, family friendly feel when your in there like other salons where it seems super warm and inviting and somewhere you want to hang with girlfriends. read more

Get there and they do not have my appt and "sadly" the appt was changed the past weekend by whom....no one knows to a day I would never pick. It's too bad because I wanted to like it. Staff could offer nothing but a time to come back over two hours later again with no explanation as to why this was changed. Despite hearing good things I will NEVER return and will never have the opportunity to recommend. Marques was at the Highfalls Film Festival opening event giving out chair massages....and guess what... YELP gave me tickets. And guess what.... he was awesome, so I booked an hour. I have not been to this place in a very long time. It is much improved since then, they have a nice changing area (solo showers & bathrooms) with a dry sauna, robes, towels, stuff, slippers etc. Then a comfy transition room awaits you with snacks, beverages and a fire place. The stylist was very informative but the business practices are predatory and take advantage of new clientele. As a new customer I called to ask quite a few questions before making my appointment as I stressed I was not familiar with their salon. They were helpful in suggesting a stylist however they did not mention the price of the stylist they happened to suggest was one of their most expensive. Their website does say $35+ for a haircut however that might have been mentioned they booked me with their farther end of the scale as i was not made aware that the base charge would be $95 even though we only ended up cleaning up my layers. i called later in the day to ask if i had been charged wrong but i was rudely told that i was not and it was my fault and "that most people would ask about price if it was an issue". I reiterated that I made clear I was a new client and conveniently no-one explained the stylists price point and that I absolutely would not have booked a $95 trim if I had known and was told there was nothing that could be done for me about their charge. I find this very predatory of their business. I hope the stylist their find a place to work that treats their customers more honestly instead of taking advantage of them. read more

I've been getting my hair cut with Charlotte for 5 years and she is absolutely amazing! Great at what she does and always remembers what was going on in your life from the last visit! I only knock a star off for the company, they accidentally charged me $70 for my haircut when they were supposed to charged be $75. They called a week later and needed my credit card information for the $5 I owed. I explained to them that I was in Europe and it wasn't a good time and asked if they could call back another time. They insisted that for their books to be correct they needed the information that second which was a huge inconvenience for me, and all over $5 which seems very ridiculous for such a large company. I have been searching high and low for a colorist who knows what they're doing. Seriously. I spent three years in Buffalo, tried out six different salons, with eight different colorists and had no luck with any of them. On two occasions the color was so horrific, I walked right out of one salon and into another to try and get it fixed. I ended up having to fly home to Long Island to go to my trusted colorist every time I needed a touch up, it wasn't working! So, I move to Rochester and I do my research, talk to a couple friends of mine and they lead me to Shear Ego and prefaced their recommendation with the fact that it's pricey. I called Shear Ego and asked for an appointment with someone who was brilliant with blonde highlights. They suggested William and I was able to book an appointment within the next two weeks. The salon is very pretty, well run, they have earpieces that alert your stylist when you're there and ready for the appointment, which felt very New York City and cold but nonetheless, efficient. So I meet William who is going to be doing my highlights and show photos explain what I want and don't want and he seems to get it. (So have colorists in the past.) So I wasn't too optimistic. They don't do highlights in front of a mirror which was a little strange for me. Instead I was sitting in a regular chair at a circular table, kind of odd. He didn't put me under the heat following completion of the highlights which was something I wasn't used to but I just went with it. After the highlights were done we went to the sinks and Williams was the one who washed my hair which I appreciated because oftentimes things get lost in translation from colorist to washer in terms of what kind of toner/shampoo/conditioner to use. The chairs are a real treat, they recline backwards and your legs come upwards and for a solid 3-5 minutes you are just in pure relaxation mode, until your neck starts to ache so bad you start squirming in your seat hoping they'll bring you some sort of neck cushion (but that never happens.) After the wash we went over to the chair with a mirror and bright lights and I closed my eyes while he dried my hair. I came in for bright blonde white highlights. I stressed that I hated gold, I hate yellow, I wanted fresh and light. That's exactly what I got. I was so happy with his work I wanted to cry. I know that sounds dramatic, but when you've shielded out hundreds and hundreds of dollars over the years for horrible coloring jobs, it's such a good feeling when someone finally gets it right. He blew out my hair and curled it to perfection. The total came to $125, which for a full highlight is right around what I'm used to paying back home on Long Island so I didn't mind the cost since it was a job well done. My color has definitely turned slightly goldish/yellow over the last couple of days. I'll continue to use the purple shampoo they recommended but it's definitely not the color I got the day in the salon. Still, it's been better than any job in the past so I will definitely come back again. read more

After my stylist left to go out on her own, Shear Ego lied to me and told me she had decided to stop working to care for her family. Later, when I asked them for the specifics re: the highlight colors I have been paying for there for the last 8 years, they refused to release this information to me. I would have happily continued to use Shear Ego for manicures, brows, etc, but now I will never be back. What kind of place alienates their customers after so many years and SO much money. My color info is their SECRET? Well, in addition to being furious, I'm wholly disappointed as well. Keep in mind, if you ever move etc they will NOT share this info with you! How pathetic. read more

Now that I'm done being indignant and snippy (long day..), I had a great time with my not so fancy physicist husband (Woopeedeedoo) I'm a school teacher who wipes snot and spit from my JC Penny's collection everyday. We did disclose that when the ladies asked us what brought us to Pittsford. They made no changes in their services nor did they even make the usual snooty comments suburban residents make when I tell them I work in a city public school. I wonder why I'm so not offended by their friendly curiosity? Oh because it wasn't offensive. Oh and if you don't want to talk, you don't have to. I def spaced out during the hair wash. It was a nice hair wash! We were received with respect, and that continued into our cut and styling. We had wandering in there randomly too, so they were accommodating right off the bat. The ladies were knowledgable and friendly. Christina made sure I was secure in her knowledge and skill in cutting my stiff, long, asian hair, while Charlotte made my husband's giant poof into something Justin Timberlake would admire. I told my stylist that this was our first time out in weeks and she immediately asked if I wanted my hair curled up for the night out. Great salon. As with most of the larger salons in the area, the haircuts are priced according to the experience of the stylist. If you want a junior stylist, you can cut a wash, cut and blowdry for $35-$40. For the quality, it's not bad. I've been to Scott Miller and a number of other salons in the area, but I like Shear Ego because the stylists and clientele are a mix of people, and it's a large place so appointments are not too difficult to make. With a limited schedule, it's easier to get into a salon that has extended hours on some days, including Sundays. One thing I enjoy in particular is that the staff don't fakely greet and pamper you. It's friendly, down-to-earth and classy. The place is bright, clean, and usually buzzing with a flurry of activity. There's a feeling of "come in, we're organized and happy you're here." Not the case with other places. The other part about Shear Ego is that it's connected to the Men's Club, so my hubby can get his hair styled at the same time. Good value, pleasant, and excellent haircuts. I'm pretty simple and have never dyed my hair, so can't really comment on that aspect. One of my friends last week, however, did get her hair dyed there and it was gorgeous. An ombre dye job of sorts, her black hair faded into caramel curls at the end and looked really lovely. This review is for the new men's section. Having been to other places designed for the "upscale" gentleman I was rather disappointed with this place. The same people cut hair for both the men's and women's side so there is no real point in having the special men's section. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the 20 year old blond girl cutting my hair but I would rather have someone who just does men's hair. The lobby looks like it belongs in a catalog, and is not very welcoming but rather stiff. The staff was very friendly but again they dressed like they belong in a salon not a men's barber shop. What I am getting at is this place is still a salon, just with a special section for the men to get their hair cut, otherwise nothing else is different. They do have some good men's products, but their selection is limited and next to art of shaving and jack black products you will find bed head which well again does not belong in a men's barber shop. I went in for a dye and cut. The dye on my head burned for 2 days after my my hair was dyed. Red Flag, I never had this happen before. We discussed having my side and front bangs fixed. I was promised that I'd be able to style my hair the way it was, after a few layers were cut in, and that it would flow into place. When my hair was dried, it looked like crap. I cannot believe she let me walk out the door that way. So, I went home and tried to fix it. Next big surprise, there were no layers, but the front bangs were cut even more, leaving them to stand up straight when I tried to comb them into place. They didn't flow with the rest of my hair. I went back the same day, a few layers were cut in. I figured I'd wait to see what happened when I washed it. I then waited two days to wash my hair. Surprise, my hair didn't fall into place at all. I called back and went in to see the manager. My hair was everywhere...He told me there was nothing wrong with it and pretended he didn't understand what I was saying. There was nothing that could be done. So why did I come in her asked. Um, I said, your receptionist told me to! What really pissed me off was that he said he talked to the stylist and she said she did what I asked, and made me feel like a liar, and kept insisting my hair was fine and that i was stying it wrong...I think I know my hair. Anyway, I left there very upset, because not only did he make me feel like a liar, he sat me right next to the stylist who did my hair, while she was having her hair done, and listening in on the conversation .
