The kids love their hot cocoa and muffins, and we've tried quite a few things from the menu, all of which have been really good. It's a fine place for coffee but it doesn't much resemble its namesake and I was pretty disappointed the entire patio was covered. I love sitting outside in the sun especially on a chilly morning. My friend and I scooted our chairs to the far eastern end of the patio to try to sit at the very edge of where the sun was just barely hitting the far end of the patio. I came back a second time for the La Mesa Holiday Faire in the evening and Sheldon's was the perfect place to grab some hot cocoa and watch the live entertainment next to the warmth of the outdoor heaters. What a cute place with a very thoughtful nod to the original use. I love when businesses really go the extra mile with adaptive reuse! This is a counter service space with a huge shaded patio with heaters so it didn't feel chilly in these "colder" winter months. Great coffee with creative flavor profiles. The cinnamon bun latte is a total treat, but the other lattes we ordered were also high quality and unique. Their chorizo breakfast bowl (pictured) has me addicted. Generous portions and such great flavor. Their sandwiches also were very well portioned. We've been 5 times now and we've never been disappointed in any of their dishes. There's a lot right next to the restaurant, but there is also plenty of street parking, both metered and free. TLDR; Great spot for meeting friends for a casual brunch, some outdoor study time, or a tasty cup of coffee. And get the chorizo bowl with avocado. read more

I met up a friend at Sheldon's Service Station for coffee on a Wednesday morning. I didn't realize it's all metered parking. The machine I parked at was quarters only thankfully I had a few. Twenty five cents per 20 mins so bring 4 quarters to meet your friends and at least 2 quarters if it's a coffee date and you need an excuse to end the coffee date early :p. For my breakfast I tried the avocado toast special which happened to be carmelized onions and mushrooms on a bed of avocado toast. I was really excited about this. I had reviewed the online menu thinking it was going to be the mozzarella, tomato on avo toast but the special had changed. Unfortunately I was so disappointed. My sourdough toast was soggy and it was not fresh avocado instead it was like a pre packaged guac. Had I known I wouldn't have ordered. The latte was pretty good. Service wise the lady at the register was really friendly. I def want to support a family business. I am not in this area often but if I was meeting my friend in La Mesa, I'd get coffee and a pastry. There's a wide variety of fresh muffins. It's also all outdoor seating and plenty of tables and chairs all under a covered area so it's full of shade. read more

Sheldon's is always a great spot to get brunch. Their menu is simple, their coffee is good, the outdoor dining experience is fun. I recommend dropping by if you are ever in downtown La Mesa. I've had many of the items on their menu and they've never disappointed. Everything is cooked with fresh ingredients and served with great service. I've had the breakfast sandwich many times and highly recommend that. The breakfast burrito and the bagel and lox are also some of my favorite items to get. Service was great both times we came & the croissant breakfast sandwich is something I dream about eating again. It's just so good, flaky, and a generous portion size! This is my go-to place! Excellent food (best eggs Benedict and pistachio latte in San Diego) and friendly, personal service. I love that the employees all remember my name. It's the "Cheers" of brunch restaurants! I enjoy playing with OPDs (other people's dogs) on the patio. The covered patio is great when it is 100 degrees outside in the summer, or when it is cold and rainy in the winter. The atmosphere is friendly, inviting and very SoCal. The patio is dog friendly and there are plenty of seats. They also have 2 fire tables and heat lamps throughout the patio area. The building itself was the site of the first full-service gas station in the area during the 1920s. As you walk up to the counter, there's a little plaque with the history of the building. Aside from the cool history, the food always hits the spot! For this trip, we ordered their eggs benedict and their daily special avocado toast. the eggs benedict is a staple for Sheldon's and it's a dish you can't go wrong with. The avocado toast was a perfect mix of savory and decadent. The combination of the mushrooms with goat cheese was something I couldn't stop eating. Another great thing about Sheldon's is that the portions are perfect for the pricing. You definitely leave this place full but not obscenely full which is great because you wouldn't want to lug your leftovers around as you explore La Mesa. Sheldon's was the best in town until it shifted service completely. I had an average meal here recently and felt horrible after. It's a chill hangout, family friendly, dog friendly, a meet up with friends, a casual birthday or special occasion hang. Fresh sandwiches, different breads, paninis, avocado toast, Cobb salads, omelettes and burrito wraps. It's a fun menu. Breakfast ends at 11am. Open til 2. Service is timely.
