I can't believe I forgot to review this place! After a great dinner at Shanghai Delight, I wanted something sweet! It was 5 minutes until closing, but the nice owners still let us in. However, they ran out of egg tarts, which is why I wanted to go in there to begin with! I did settle for some custard and taro buns! Yum! I totally forgot that there was a Sheng Kee Bakery in the Lyon shopping center near the border of Fremont and Milpitas. This location is more convienent than dealing with the parking lot off 880 going to the Sheng Kee in Milpitas Square - at least for those in the central and southside of Fremont. Lots of pastries - bread- and the cakes - i love the cakes with lots of fruits on top. Hope they open more locations outside of the Bay Area - i really miss the cakes - well at least i can find there mooncakes outside of the bay area. read more

It seems this is everyone's go-to place for fancy cakes for special occasions. I've never had them do writing, so I'm not sure if they mess it up or not, considering they're asian and probably not too hot on english. The flavors and excecution are excellent. Their cakes are gorgeous and reasonably priced, with the smaller ones about $16-18 and the bigger ones $20-22. The small one could feed maybe five people and the bigger ones probably ten people, with economy slices. They give you a nice "happy birthday" sign to stick into your cake if you are buying it for such a day, and wrap it in a nice box with pretty ribbon for you when you purchase. read more

It was my Auntie's birthday and all of us were too indecisive, which meant none of us ordered a cake. I come in TWO DAYS before my Auntie's birthday and this place was more than accommodating. The lady was so patient, as I asked her a bajillion question about all of their cakes. Not only did she answer all of my questions, but she was willing to stand there as I stared and contemplated between which cake I wanted to order. And when I told her how I wanted her to decorate the cake, she even gave me great advice and recommendations on what she'd do to make the cake look even more unique. I'm so thankful Sheng Kee has such experienced people to guide me towards the right direction when it comes to ordering a cake. I know that a lot of people complain about fruit cakes, but Sheng Kee's fruitcakes are AMAZING! I've tried many of their cakes before, but I'd say their Strawberry Cake is by far the most delicious because it's so LIGHT, SOFT, and MOIST! The strawberry doesn't make the cake part taste soggy and the frosting isn't too sweet. Definitely a must try. Even if you don't have a special occasion to celebrate, you can come here to enjoy their pastries. I love their taro buns and pineapple buns. But, most of all, their MOCHA and VANILLA CAKE ROLLS are DELISH! I can never stop at one piece because these moist cake rolls are so addictive. Sheng Kee offers a large variety of Chinese-style pastries, breads, cakes, and other sweet treats. I visit at least once a week to pick up breakfast. One of my favorite pastries is the apple turnover. Sheng Kee's version is a departure from what you buy at the local supermarket, which groans under the weight of butter and sugar. These turnovers are sweet but light and fit for people who don't plan to take a nap after breakfast. This particular location (Milpitas) makes the best--their crust is the most puffy and flaky. As you walk towards the checkout counter, you will pass their display of enticing Portuguese egg custards. These are tarts filled with a rich and creamy custard that is as good as any found in Asia. The custards are an indulgence, but well worth the calories. Sheng kee's cakes are also very tasty, artistically presented, and well-suited to the Asian palate. read more

So....my favorite dim sum place in Pleasanton stopped serving dim sum recently (go figure!) and that has left me with a major craving for those to-die-for little steamed custard buns they had there. This leads me straight here to Yelp and what seemed like about a million other sites trying to find out where to get some of those things closer to home. I came across a review for Sheng Kee and figured I would try it out and *hopefully* find what I was longing for. Well.....they didn't have exactly those same little white buns that I am used to, BUT....they did have a bigger light brown bun labeled "custard bun" for only like $1.50. YAY!!!! So my sister and I both grabbed one and figured "what the heck, let's just try these"......and OH. MY. GOD. YUM!!!!!!! They were slightly warm, super soft and fresh and filled to the brim with the exact same bright yellow sweet and yummy custard that I was looking for. AWESOMENESS. I also tried the chocolate bun with mochi.....didn't care for the mochi much (could very well just be me), but the bun itself was good. My sister tried the mini custard tart thing and didn't like it at all.....she said it was too eggy for her taste. She ended up throwing it away after two bites....oh well. As she was paying for her stuff I checked out their cakes. They were all gorgeous and looked really yummy. Will have to try one of those someday. =) All in all, we will DEFINITELY be back when the craving strikes again....which I'm guessing will be often. I only come here for their Portuguese egg tarts which are heavenly. The shell is light and cripy and the egg filling is soft with the right amount of sweetness. The only bad thing is that they always run out when I show up at 2 or later. My boyfriend tried their BBQ pork bun and couldn't finish it. Their bread was delicious but the BBQ filling looked really off. It looked and tasted different from pork I've had at other places. Not a good different either. Their mango mousse was pretty good for the price but I wouldn't go here for that alone. The cheapest I've seen mousse cake that is pretty decent. I highly recommend their Portuguese egg tarts although I'd rather not have them sell out even earlier! read more

Got a last minute tiramisu cake for my moms bday. Had never been here before and was honestly hoping for something half decent since I've never heard of this place. It's a small bakery which sells similar items and has a similar set up as Paris baguette or 85 bakery. The cake was around $30 but turned out to be very good. Everyone was raving about it asking where I got it. I was pretty surprised given that it was a random place bakery found on yelp. Most places that make tiramisu are really hit or miss. popped in here 10 minutes before 9 this morning, and i was so impressed by the size of this bakery. all the other SK bakeries tend to be cramp and small with an old school mom and pop feel. this one is huge, clean, and stylish! upon walking in, i was greeted by an older gentleman carrying out boxes of goodies. i was startled b/c most older chinese folks NEVER talk to younger people, but he smiled and i waved. a young lady behind the counter was placing pastries in the trademarked cellophane SK bags and promptly stopped what she was doing and asked if i needed help. two xa xiu bao please! oh? it's too hot to be placed in the clear bag? no, i don't mind you putting it in a regular paper bag. she was really considerate and asked me before she proceeded. other "traditional" chinese bakeries could give a shiet and just shove it in a cup if they pleased....but she asked! wowoowowow! and HK milk tea? yes please! $1.50/cup, and it's by far the BEST hot HK style milk tea ive had from all of the SK bakeries. i was preparing myself for it be MILK with a splash of tea, and bitter beyond belief. upon tasting it today, the flavor was rich, with a slight milky after-taste, and just sweet enough for it be delectable. YUM. not sure if this would help, but SK bakery is located to the left of 99 Ranch, all the way towards Darbor seafood/corner. I hate driving around looking for places without another store to be used as a mark to find a place. Will be back on a non-busy day! read more

oh sheng kee bakery, i'm on to your little secret. what secret you might ask? let me paint the picture. i went here today and ordered a pork bun, chicken patechaud, custard bun and croissant, all for less than 5 bucks. 5 bucks, what a steal! i also saw three people working there. interesting. let's quickly go over the business math. 3 ppl working at about 9 bucks an hour. even if all the materials are free, sheng kee would have to average 27 baked goods sold an hour just to break even (each pastry is 1-1.25 each). obviously, materials aren't free, as well as rent and other overhead. i'm willing to wager that they would have to average over 60 baked good sold an hour to break even. now, the store probably does good business, but it wasn't packed or anything. what's the explanation? sheng kee bakery must be a front for a complicated money laundering operation. yes, i cracked the code. now to keep me quiet, i am willing to be paid in baked goods. these lips will be sealed with delicous custard bun. yum. read more

But a reason why I rated this one higher than the other ones is that I LOVE their japanese style cheesecake. It's not that sweet and the fruit makes it really good. I got this cake for my dad's and grandpa's birthday...it's on the same week..and my family just love it! They finish both cake on the same day I bought it home. I've been going to Sheng Kee for their tasty baked goods for years! I usually stop by this one and the one in Cupertino whenever I'm in the mood for a hot dog bun, raisin bread or a mocha roll. They have a wide assortment of bread items, rolls with meat (hot dog, pork, etc.) or sweet fillings, like pineapple, coconut, etc., all moderately priced for about $1 or $1.25 each. They also have delicious cakes with fruit toppings. Excellent quality in ingredients. The cakes are a little more on the pricey side, but definitely worth it for the quality and presentation. And their cakes come wrapped in a really cute box! The bread items are the best when they're fresh from the oven! Great spot for a quick snack if you're on the go or if you want to bring a pretty, tasty cake to work or to a party. read more

I LOVE THEIR CUSTARD BREAD! There, I said it. Nothing is better than toasting a slice and eating that puppy while it's warm. Their buns are good too, and I like that everything isn't too sweet or overwhelming like most other American bakeries.Their taro and pineapple with red bean are good, but I'm a bigger fan for the savory buns. Shredded pork bun = goooood! Fried shredded pork bun with onion = BETTER! Note: Buns are 2 for 1.50 starting from 8:30-close, and it is a fierce fight for those deliciousness. I'm talking about BAMF's grabbing lunch trays and not even selectively picking buns they like, but straight up reaching to the back and sliding EVERYTHING onto their tray. Parking is hard to find here in the peak hours since it's next to a pretty popular asian supermarket, but damn is this place good. I remember many childhood visits here to get their pork buns and coconut cakes. Their prices are around the usual 1-2 dollars a pastry, but I think it's worth it here. read more

This place is REALLY good! They have more stuffed buns than Kee Wah, which can be a positive, or a negative, depending on the person, and they are also much more Asian, which can be a positive or a negative. I really like the buns here though, especially the sweet ones. YUM! There's ones with Taro filling, or coffee cream filling, etc. The one thing that Kee Wah beats them at is the Dried Pork Buns, since Kee Wah's filling for that one is better. This place is a fun little bakery where you can find sweet and savory items to your liking! The set up is fun where you get a tray and tongs then go around and serve/ grab your own goodies. Everything is rather cheap, about less than two dollars for buns and bread is about under ten. I love how soft and moist the bread and buns are. I am not a big sweets person so I'm not sure how you may like it. I love the hot dog buns when they have it BC the green onion on top makes it that much better! The custard and bbq pork buns are amazing as well! Raisin bread makes a nice quick breakfast on the go! 3.5 stars if I could. oh how i love the portuguese dan tat (egg tarts) here. if you get them cold, don't waste it by eating it cold. you really must reheat it in a mini toaster over to fully appreciate the dichotomy between the crispy crust and the sweet, smooth center. on my mini oven its about 8 minutes at 350 degrees. and don't forget to throw a little piece of foil on top as not to ruin and burn it. other favorite items here are the bo lo (pineapple crust) taro bun and bo lo raisin custard bun. the filling is plentiful and not overly sweetened like most american pastries. read more

One of several Sheng Kee bakeries in the Bay Area, this one located in the same Ranch 99 Milpitas strip mall as Kee Wah Bakery and offering similar products. They carry asian-style buns, each individually wrapped for freshness, that are just like the ones made at Kee Wah with a few different variations. The BBQ pork bun tastes identical, and the custard bun seems just like the pineapple custard bun at Kee Wah, just without the pineapple. The custard used at both bakeries is very similar, in a blind taste test I probably couldn't tell the difference. The bread on all the buns I've tried has been soft with a nice bite and texture. The Sheng Kee and Kee Wah buns are very close where I can't say one has a noticeable edge over the other. Sheng Kee also has a hot case with about 4 varieties of "hot" pastries/tarts, which I haven't tried yet, and a cold case that included a "potato salad bun" which looks interesting but felt too heavy to try. They have a large selection of small round "tea cakes" but lack the large cold case of French-style pastries that they have at Kee Wah. Price wise everything is affordable, running from $1-2 dollars per bun. If you're just looking for buns for a quick bite to eat for under $5 this place is perfect, but if you're looking for a larger variety or bread/cookies/refrigerated pastries you're better off at Kee Wah on the other side of the strip mall. read more
