Shigotonin is a delightful discovery off the Vegas strip (but may as well be on the strip considering the taste and quality of food here) in a small plaza. Chef Shuji runs the restaurant with his wife next to him in the kitchen. The fish here is flown in from Japan and of the highest quality as you can see from the sheen and fat marbling. The tuna melts in your mouth and bite after bite is a wonderful experience as you pair it with soy sauce, fresh Wasabi, yuzu Wasabi, or some combination of the condiments provided. This is also the first sushi restaurant I have ever been to that automatically brings out fresh Wasabi without having to ask. The portions are generous and we left feeling very satisfied. Even though we were very full, we took a look at the dessert menu. Not pictured here is a sweet potato with ice cream and brown sugar glaze. This dish on the menu was unassuming but the taste was so decadent. Quite possibly the best and sweetest sweet potato I have ever tasted. The chef slowly roasts them over a 2 hour period, rotating the potatoes every so slightly every 15 minutes. The sweet potato could be a dessert by itself, it was that good! Chef Shuji is a charming and funny host. He regularly comes out to greet his customers and makes sure they are enjoying their meal, very high-touch. If you know Japanese - even if it's just a few phrases, speak with him as he will be delighted. He was absolutely tickled when we said arigato and he shared that he is originally from Kyoto. One of the best sushi experiences I've had outside of Japan. The interior is simple and clean, but nothing to write home about. The service was amazing and was helpful in figuring out what we should order. The Sakura box was a highlight for me although it was very expensive. The sweet shrimp is something I haven't tried before but it was delicious and marinated perfectly. The grilled unagi roll wasn't that special for me but it was still good. The sashimi here was excellent and were generously cut portions. Definitely get the Sashimi platter if you are into sashimi. Coming here many of the reviews say it's expensive...and I can confirm that it is expensive. It's weird because it's expensive but doesn't feel upscale. What I thought was not worth it was the bluefin tuna set. It was honestly too fatty and we didn't really want to finish it. Rather, I would recommend getting a chirashi bowl and having some pieces in it. Gives you more variety. My favorite was definitely the uni pasta though. At 65/bowl (and the bowl is quite small) I thought it would be a ripoff, but honestly I think it's worth it. Pasta is cooked well and the creaminess is not too rich and well flavored. So easy to just slurp down. Overall I think if you're looking for quality sushi but can't make a last minute reservation into a nice place, this is a good backup. The fish is solid here but agree with others that the price may be a bit high for what you get. I've been to premium sushi/omakase places that offer similar sets in LA for less. I think I was a bit disappointed in the amount of uni I got for the special chirashi. I kid you not, the small fingernail size dollop of uni you see in my picture was all the uni given for the entire chirashi bowl. Now the high quality of fish was what redeemed this place a bit more as a 4 star for me, but I almost rather they didn't list uni as part of this bowl if they're going to be giving such a small amount that's barely enough to get a good taste of when mixed in with the rice. Well damn the sushi is that good; I haven't had tuna that good ever. And it was every piece of the tuna from the akami to negitoro to the Otoro. The staff are well trained, attentive, and have some of the friendly and joking nature of the owner, Shigo-San. The uni pasta was also excellent but if I come back I'm ditching that and getting more varieties of the special bowls (there's been mention in previous reviews of the Hokkaido special's rice being mind blowing) We also got the yellowtail temaki which was okay but the tuna was so delicious that it couldn't compare. This place is too overpriced. First of all, I called in to get a reservation on a Saturday Evening at 5pm and got a res for 8pm that same day. Asked for an earlier reservation time and they said they were fully booked and will call me back if they have anything earlier. They didn't call. I came there a little earlier than 8 and the place had like 4-5 empty tables to my surprise. Only 1 party filled one table my whole meal. So I felt like they were not managing reservations well. Food: The portions were so small omg, that box I attached as a picture was small and did not have depth to the box. For it's size, its super expensive lol. This was for the hokkaido box ($65). Moreover, the salmon ikura box did not come with sush rice. It came with plain rice. It had a decent portion for it's price though. Service was pretty nice. I couldn't survive my latest Vegas trip without having quality fish, I stumbled across Shigotonin after hearing some hype and it definitely lived up to the expectations. We came on a Friday night, it was super packed but luckily we got a reservation. We ordered the sakura box with chutoro, the akami and salmon temaki, and salmon ochazuke. I knew from looking at the pictures I had to try one of the sakura boxes, it did not disappoint. The chutoro espeically was mouth watering, and they were deceptively large cuts. All the other cuts of fish were generously cut and delicious as well. I was hungry but this box is surprisingly filling. The akami and salmon temaki were also good as well, the akami was delicious. We finished with the salmon chazuke because it was chilly. The broth was light and the salmon was soft as well. The service was spectacular. It was my first time dining and our waitress went into depth about their menu and recommended good sake pairings as well. The head chef also came by to drop off fresh wasabi for the sakura box. He was very personable and funny. Shigotonin tries to serve traditional sushi with a modern flair, and I think the ambience also resembles that as well. It's perfect for an intimate dinner. This was a LOT of food for two of us but it was all AMAZING! The fish was so fresh and SO ONO (delicious)!!! The owner was so nice and came out to thank us for coming in to eat. Such a gracious host! We learned that everyone who worked at Shigotonin (with the exception of one person) is from Hawaii! So my local folks will feel right at home eating amazing, ono food and the awesome aloha vibes. This may have been too much of a good thing! I did struggle to order because I wanted to try so many things. There were things I had never seen on a menu before (like aburi mentaiko). However, knowing I am human and cannot overdo it too much, I had restraint. I started with an iced green tea and an order of agenasu, lightly fried eggplant in dashi broth topped with grated ginger, bonito flakes, and green onions. Eric R. got hot hojicha tea. Eric R. decided to order the special kaisen chirashi for his meal, and David S. ordered the sakura box with chutoro and the uni pasta. I ordered aburi saba roll because I rarely see mackerel on a roll. The saba was lightly cured in thick pieces, seared on top of the house special rice, which was mixed with ginger and kombu. It was very tasty. Eric R. was hoping to have sashimi slices, but the chirashi here is chopped. There is nothing inherently wrong with that (I had some great chirashi this style in Japan), but his came on the house special rice and apparently, he is more partial to white sushi rice. He did have five kinds of fish and ikura in his, and he loves salmon and ikura, so he ate the fish, and David and I helped him with the rice. David shared his uni pasta and it was very rich and creamy! Eric R. ordered a negitoro handroll to have a delicious bite to finish his meal. David S. was enjoying his delectable sakura box, and I finally decided I was going to order something I cannot really get anywhere else besides New York, California, Hawaii, or Japan. A box of absolute decadence in the form of fatty, oily brain food appeared with massive pieces of otoro, akami which was surprisingly flavorful to me, negitoro, ikura, and uni. I shared otoro with both gentlemen, and enjoyed the sushi rice underneath. There was a point where I hit a wall of "too much of a good thing" so I gave more otoro to David. The decor is minimalist with black lacquered bench and settee with no back or cushions. Just so happens one of my friends twisted his back playing golf that day, so we asked to change to a table against the wall. The host, and the manager told us it was an absolute "No" even went a server said the would be an open table in the front. They ultimately provided a chair for the end of our table. Sea Urchin Fact: The oldest sea urchin ever found was the red sea urchin, which was estimated to be around 200 years old. Rod U. does it again with a great review! Upon reflection, I realized that is a ridiculous thought. There is no such thing and I want to come back for the Japanese Style Uni Pasta with caviar now. We ordered the tuna platter, which included 2 pieces of akami, chutoro, ootoro, and kama toro. This plate came with HUGE pieces!! I normally don't like the big fish eggs but I tried my husbands bowl and wow it was sooooo soooo fresh!!! And the wasabi seasoning with soy sauce made in house was absolute cherry on top!!
