You know, this place is always good, and they serve their own beer which is Mad Anthony's brand. So, everything is local. I've never had anything here that I haven't liked. This is not a full-service restaurant. You order at a window, then they bring you your food after maybe 10 minutes or so depending on what you ordered. My only complaint is that if you get the meat platters...pork, chicken, brisket, etc., so many times the meat isn't very hot. I'm assuming it's already cooked, and in a warming unit. I would just like it to be hot, not just warm. The side items are always piping hot, just not the meat. It's the only reason they get 4-stars instead of 5. Keep up the good work!! I live close by so we've eaten here dozens of times. The reason for 3 stars is the way the place is run. The food is good but it's way overpriced. Portions are small and served in plastic baskets. For dine-in you order right at the front door. For takeout you order toward the back. You can also order at the bar. There's no organization or line. People just pack around the door, no one knows who's next or who's coming in or going out. On busy days It can take longer to order than to get your food. You get a number and find a seat. Often they take more orders than they have seats so you end up with 4 or 5 people packed around a table for two. There is no space for a line or organization to the process. They've forgotten part of our order multiple times. I don't think the orders get checked on the way out of the kitchen. Service is on wax paper in a Dairy Queen style basket but priced like a steak house. Sides are mediocre and they always run out of things (even before COVID). Drinks are self serve. Once our food was taken away while we we're getting our drinks. They have a beer mug club. Sometimes they can't find my mug and only a couple of the beers are good. You can't keep your mug number from year to year which makes it even more confusing. The first year they were only open part of the year but charged full price for the mug. At years end they should give you your mug but mine was lost. The staff is friendly but no one that works here seems to know what's going on. Highlights are the brisket and the patio in the summer. Went at the recommendation of family who loved it. Staff was generally unhelpful and unfriendly, seemed irritated we had questions about the menu. I thought the meat was very salty. Tried the pulled pork and chopped chicken. I didn't eat more than a few bites. Sides were corn spoon bread and green chili mac n cheese. The corn spoon bread would have been good if it weren't burnt. We had burned pieces throughout and was most of what you tasted. The mac n cheese was good in theory but didn't taste like much. It was just meh. My husband liked his jalapeño sausage and ribs. We ate there once on Illinois Road. The BBQ was dry (and very greasy, of course). But too much dry rub is too much. You cannot taste the meat for the dry stuff. We could not find clean table that was not greasy. Paper towels are pretty primitive napkins. A good degreasing cleaner and fresh cleaning cloths would help the tables and floors. Hands down some of the best BBQ I've had in my life. We've been through several times while stopping in Ft. Wayne, and it's always been a big hit. The brisket is well flavored without being dried out, and the pulled pork is fantastic as well. The kids menu is a good value for the money spent (entree, side, and a fountain drink for $3.99). Good service, very clean eating space, and a wide menu. Not much more to say. 5/5 stars, absolutely recommend if you're in the mood for a great meal. read more

This place is great. I waned to get some good barbecue while I was home and visiting family and good old Yelp! Showed this place. The parking lot and building are setup great and when you walk in it's got a great vibe to it. I ordered the 1 meat plate with Turkey, southern green beans and chili mac and cheese and I can't say enough about how great it all was. The mac was cheesy and flavorful with a nice little kick from the chilis. The Beans had a great flavor with the hunks of meat in with it. I slathered the turkey in the Hot BBQ sauce and it was flavorful but had a nice kick to it. Overall I was very impressed with this place and it took a lot of willpower not to order and devour a dessert-not to mention for a BBQ joint it was reasonably priced. I know where I will be coming again if I am in Fort Wayne and need of a taste of real Soothern barbecue! read more

I went to Shigs In Pit and ordered the two meat plate with two sides and a side of sweet homemade pickles. I had the burnt ends and the jalapeno cheddar sausage with potato casserole and green bean salad. I was going to give it three stars because the burnt ends were not very impressive, but the jalapeno cheddar sausage gave this location its fourth star. The name is cute and it's a type of place where you order your food and pick it up at the window inside and sit down at the tables. It's extremely casual. The potato casserole was really good too. They have t-shirts for sale and potato chips by the bag. I'd go back for the sausage, but I'd skip on the burnt ends next time, too fatty. Do be advised, it's pretty expensive for BBQ. In the midst of numerous awards on the wall you'll find a dining room that is unremarkable, not inviting, cozy or stylish. Aloof, obviously uninterested staff will take your order and in a fairly short amount of time your food will be ready, a staff member will scream it from the pickup window. The food quality is good, all the sides I've had are tasty, the pork ribs and brisket are a little dry but an addition of sauces will remedy that. I am a fan of BBQ but very picky. This place didn't hit the craving buttons I was hoping for. Ribs: Decent. Had nice pork flavor but it wasn't the deep, rich flavor that I like in BBQ. I want the fat melted into the meat, not in big chunks that I have to eat around. Was good with the sauce, and good as leftovers. This is not fall-off-the-bones style. Chicken: Dry and with far too much spice rub. It's all chopped up in pieces before cooking which lets the moisture out. Give me a big hunk of meat please! Brisket: This is a wet brisket. Apparently it isn't common in the Midwest to have Wet or Dry, we got a confused look in response to this question. It didn't have much of a flavor on its own but I guess is a good way to eat BBQ sauce, like getting fries to eat ketchup. Sides: I enjoyed the macaroni. Not a spoon-cornbread-casserole fan. The beans are pretty good, a bit on the sweeter side. The tomato-cucumber salad had been sitting for too long and was soggy in an unfortunate way; might have been great fresh. Atmosphere: You walk up to an indoor counter-window to order, wait around with no clearly defined waiting room, right in the path between the dining room and the restroom, then there are tables along the walls and front window to sit at. The Burnt Brisket ends are phenomenal; the pulled pork is the best I've ever had; I have no taste for potato salads and such, but the potato salad was definitely something to write home about...I guess that makes me a convert. With a name like "Shigs in Pit" I couldn't help but think (and I'm sure the owners were quite aware of the name) that it sounds like "Pigs in Shit". As in "Happier than..." Curiosity got the best of me, so I turned around and had to give this place a try. It was a good sign when I noticed a bunch of marked and unmarked Fort Wayne police cars parked outside the place. It was just pass noon, so I assumed the police force stopped in for a bite. This place has to be good if the Fort Wayne PD was eating here. Found out also that the Fort Wayne Fire Department patronized this place. Figured I start small and work myself up. I ordered the PULL PORK sandwich for $5.99, a side of their macaroni & cheese along with a soft-drink (Mello-Yello). RESULT: OUTSTANDING! I've heard people complain about the meat being too dry. Well, not me. The prices may be a bit on the "expensive" side, but...what are you going to do? If the meat is too dry, drown it in the BBQ sauce that's available in a squirt bottle on every table. I can't elaborate enough about how awesome this sandwich was. You're just going to have to try it for yourself. TRUST ME....you will NOT be disappointed (unless you forget to bring your wallet). It just depends on who's making your food. Sometimes the ham sandwich is great, other times it's dry and sloppily thrown together. The bbq meat is acceptable, but their sides need some work. Coleslaw is not good and Mac and cheese is dry and not cheesy. The salad with shredded meat and corn bread croutons is generally good. Fantastic ribs with a great dry rub that were just falling off the bone. They were out of brisket (booooooo!!!) So I had the burnt ends instead. They were also excellent. Smoked turkey lacked a bit of flavor but the mild sauce made up for it. Jalapeño cheese sausage was nothing special but did taste good and was cooked well. I had high expectations after reading all the rave reviews, but my experience fell short. I ordered the ribs with potato casserole, and I found the ribs to be bland and on the dry side. The hot sauce was more sweet than hot and tasted vinegary. The potato casserole was not particularly flavorful, barely had any cheese and was a little bitter for some reason. So check out my picture. Big "Shig" Platter is just big as hell. You can split it between two people. I elected not to go with carbs, so no bread or sides. Instead the nice young fellow, it might have been Jeff the owner, big guy with beard, hooked me up (his words) with jalapeno poppers. Fellow Yelpaholics - the jalapeno poppers are the bomb. Wrap in tasty bacon, not crap bacon, but very good quality bacon. They are large and stuffed with cheddar and just enough kick...... Man, I could eat them for a meal...... Yu-a-mmm-eee. Ribs. The meal comes with six ribs......... By the look of them, I was like, "Great, nasty ass, hard as a rock rib meat. Might as well be at TGIF or Outback for shitty rib night!!!!!" On top of that, they were not served wet, no BBQ sauce, wtf? I tried to pick up a rib, and guess what, the meat fell right off. Holy moly batman! On top of that, the rub they use is out of this world. I did try their tree sauce, hot-tangy-regular, but mostly just ate the meat off. Then sucked on the caramelized bonez..... Can I get a "hellz yeah?" Brisket was okay, good flavor, nice fatty layer. Not the best, not the worst. Probably around an 7. I like my brisket on the fatty side and always ask for the fat cut, forget that dry-healthy cut. Yuk. The bummer was the burnt tips, they were defiantly burnt and super dry. Meh. The water was shut down by the City of Fort Wayne on the Saturday when we went. Apparently, the manager learned restaurant service from a DVD as there was no sign apologizing for the inconvenience. Nor did anyone come out to the dining area and apologize to the patrons. The staff also wasn't particularly friendly. They took your order and then just looked at you instead of thanking for your patronage. You know...the thing that pays their salaries. They also seemed to be more interested in Being with one another than they were in doing their jobs. Strike three: The food was mediocre. While it is better than say Chili's r Applebee's BBQ, it isn't good enough to recommend it to anyone. I have MADE better BBQ than the two meals for which I paid roughly $32. And again...the water was OFF at the restaurant. Shorty's in Toledo is a little over an hour away and their BBQ is always off the chain. Drive there and make a day trip of it if you want exceptional BBQ. Go to SHig's if you don't want to drive or you don't own a car. read more

The best little barbecue joint in town! Everything we ordered was delicious! They smoke the meats for 16 hours, and the result is juicy moist crazy good! Try the burnt ends, the green chili mac n cheese, and the potato casserole! Oh, and the green beans with smoked ham were superb! I recommend this place hands down.
