Went there for lunch today with my g/f --we both ordered a standard bento box..what's good about this place is that within the bento box, you can choose from a variety of items..other sushi places restrict you with a set # of items that it comes with --I choose the chicken teriyaki and 4 piece gyoza and my g/f had the chicken teriyaki but with california rolls..all bento boxes come with two choices for side, salad, edamame, white rice and miso soup for appetizer --miso soup was good...pretty much just like other places with the exception of it coming with clear noodles and bits of tofu inside --lately, all the places i've been to for gyoza have been on the soggy end..I know some places prefer it on the soggier side but I like them nice and crisp..finally, this place actually deep fries the pot sticker to give it a nice golden crisp taste/feel...definitely liked it --service was fairly quick..within minutes, waitress came by and placed our order PROS: quick service..gyoza crispy..options when choosing bento boxes..bathroom very clean with plenty of room CONS: not much read more

We have been coming here for the past 3 years, and the Sushi and Service has always been excellent!! We haven't tried anything else so I can't judge the other food, but the Sushi is Fantastic. This is the best sushi place ever!!! I don't think I have ever had anything here that I didn't like. All the rolls are actually bite sized so you can actually enjoy it the way its suppose to be. If you haven't been here you should go. Just be warned that the seating is limited and if you go between 6 and 730 on Fri or sat you will probably have to wait a little. read more

I was there for lunch with 2 friends, we ordered "King roll" it was less than average, "Uni" that was the worst ever, and I asked if it was fresh "NOT", the "Hamachi" was OKAY, the "Spider roll" less then average, I could go on and on...................If you like good fresh well prepared SUSHI this is not the place to go...............If you like to get drunk on their $15 all you can drink bad sake deal, I guess you don't care about what you eat............. A few of us tried this place tonight on a recommendation. I was expecting greatness, but was disappointed. The little edamame appetizer was great... perfectly cooked and salted. We ordered the Tempura appetizer, which was also delicious. The salad, however, was limp and slightly brown. Additionally, the lettuce was swimming in the dressing, which was too watery for our liking. I got the Tempura Roll and California Roll. Both were generous portions, but neither all that great. The (fake) crab meat was a big block that was slightly tough. My friends loved what they got... Sashimi platter/bowl and Rainbow Roll. Both quite fresh and tasty. They also loved the Miso Soup that, surprisingly, included noodles. The staff was quite friendly, but we had to ask twice for water and cutlery. I know, I know... Cutlery in a Japanese place? We needed it to cut the giant chunks of tempura vegetables (we all wanted a piece of each!). All in all, I wouldn't go back unless I was out-numbered. There are plenty of other sushi places I found to be better. My friends, however, say they will make a repeat visit (hence the 3 stars instead of 2). read more

Really good sushi - I especially love their 49ers roll with lots of lemon as well as macadamia nut rolls. They have upgraded the decor within the last 1-2 years, so its very modern and has a nice ambiance. A little pricier than other similar places, but they make it worth it. read more

I checked this place out for my lunch break. The people were friendly and sat me down immediately. I looked at the menu and it had a good selection of sushis as well as entrees. As I browsed the area I was seated, I saw a hand made sign for a sake special, which sounded too good to leave out. They offer a hot sake special small:$5 large:$7 unlimited:$15 per table excluding Friday... Woah that's a steal! I ordered the udon lunch special which came with a side of salad. The udon's earthiness from the mushroom and seaweed and sweetness from the miso married well together. I would defiantly go here just for the udon alone. Contrary to the reviews by others, I also have been coming to Shima for years. I actually like the food and service much better now. Just ask the head chef for his specialty rolls and you will not be disappointed! The place has a great ambiance and also has a lot of parking available. The service was very polite and great. Sushi here is decent for the Cambrian area. Especially if you live there. The rolls were not spectacular. It was okay, not bad or anything. The sashimi was decent but not the best quality. Their udon soups are pretty satisfying and fresh tasting. What I didn't like was that when you order sashimi as part of your bento dinner meal, the quality of it is horrible!!! Tastes like it's been frozen twice and very dry with no flavor. Other than that, it's a decent place if you are craving for sushi and are too lazy to drive far. if you want good sushi, I would put the effort into going further. read more

Shima Sushi has great rolls. I normally go there for that. The staff is ok. Sometimes they can be a little impatient or not as caring for their customers but I think that is just their culture. Either way, it's a great place nearby our house. We dine there at least once every two weeks. I recommend this place to anyone who loves rolls the most. read more

All I have to say is unlimited sake! Honestly do not go here for the food. The food is fine but you can find better. Come here if you feel like taking down some sake. For every four people they charge you a total of $15 for unlimited sake. I have been a few times with a large group and after a short period of time they actually started giving us carafe's of sake instead of the small bottles. The place is a little small so you might want to call ahead. If you have a lot planned the next day I would stay away! :) read more

Decent food and price is right for lunch but they almost want you to out of door when it is close to closing time. Our family had been there years ago but were not impressed with the food at all. We haven't been back since then. Why would we if there are many good Japanese restaurants in San Jose? Yesterday I was craving for Japanese food but was running lots of errands. This place is a few blocks from my house and on my way of errands. I decided to give it another try and hoping things would have changed after this many years. I was disappointed with the service, thus 2 stars. My husband and I got to the restaurant at 1:40 PM. The "Open" sign was turned on. Business hours says open till 2:00pm. We walked in. The hostess wiped off a table for us and pushed off the food scraps on the floor. Strike #1. We were seated and offered the menu immediately. 3 minutes later, the hostess came over and said, "Can I take the order now? The kitchen is about to close". We were rush to order our food. Strike #2. A customer walked in around 1:45 and they almost turned him away because the kitchen was about to close. The man said he knew what he wanted. So the hostess let him sit down and was standing there, waiting to take the order when the man opened the menu. Strike #3. Food came fairly quick. Taste was fairly good. Our check was ready and placed next to our table when we started eating. Then just before 2PM, the waitress put the check on our table while we were eating. She said they were closing the cashier soon. I don't like being rushed like that. To me, this is rude service. Strike #4. I gave her my credit card anyway. She came back with the payment slips. I didn't want to be interrupted again and was going to sign the slip after I finish my food. Couple minutes later she came back and told me to sign so they could close the register. Strike #5. I was very pissed by the service. If the owner pays the employees until 2PM, DO NOT LIST till 2PM on the business hour!!! Customers can still walk in and sit down before 2:00, don't you think??? We will never go back again base on this type of service, even food was decent and it is the nearest Japanese restaurant from where we live. Portions are right, service is excellent, and they are always offering something special. I have yet to take them up on the "unlimited saki" set-up they offer, but that's a plan in the works. Really have been disappointed in this place lately, We have been going for about a year and lately portions are getting smaller and service is REALLY POOR. Waitresses can not speak english well, rush you to order, do not understand what you order when you do and forgot a roll for one of the people at the table. I order take out sushi from Ishi a couple of times a month. The fish is fresh and the service is fast and polite. White tuna is great. Seaweed salad is crisp. Rolls are generous. It's in a strip mall, and the restaurant itself isn't anything to write home about, but as long as you're not out to impress anyone, this place is a winner. Not expensive, but not cheap. Shima Sushi - Shima for Two - Sushi Bars Near Me - San Jose, California

Admittedly, I have a bone to pick with Shima Sushi. So, read this with that in mind. If, however, you are a loyal type who likes to find and frequent great local spots, you will perhaps appreciate my pissed-offed-ness. Our neighbors turned us on to this spot. As others have described, it is a nondescript, strip mall sushi joint. The really terrific thing it had going for it was that it provided great value. Which is not to say it is the least expensive sushi joint we patronize. In fact, it was one of the more pricey meals. But the portions were always very generous and there were good deals to be found on the menu. Until tonight. Why anyone would choose a down economy to raise their prices (about 20% across the board) is beyond me. But, hey, everyone needs to make a decent living, and far be it for me to begrudge the hard working staff here a good wage. What I am steamed about is that, in addition to raising their prices (which, of course we could have avoided by ordering less, right!?) they reduced the size of their portions considerably. What used to be a nice meaty piece of hamachi layered atop the Hamachi-lover's Roll was a measly see through sliver. For which I got to pay $12.90. Trust me, readers, this is NOT a $12.90 sushi roll. When all was said and done, our bill for two for dinner ran us $72.00 before tip. For a big sushi meal out, we typically find ourselves with a $50. bill pre tip. Bottom line, is this place priced themselves right into my "not worth it" category and sorry as I am to say goodbye to an old friend, we are definitely moving on! read more

I give this place 2.5 stars rounded down. I should mention though that we only ate the sushi. Their other dishes (bento, teriyaki, etc.) looked pretty tasty and were served in good portions. The sushi, however, was very unimpressive. The salmon nigiri was pretty fresh, but all the rolls we ate were "meh" at best. Also, they have the worst unagi sauce I've had. standard fare. reviewers thing it's pricey but i thought everyhing in this area is like that. big fan of the new hawaiian role since i like nuts/crunchy stuff mixed in. i think the owner is a little stand-offish. came in one time around 830p and nearly rushed out of the place. they close at 9p and had already wrapped the fish and cleaned the sushi counters BEFORE we showed up and continued to do it to re-wrap while we ate. we do go back only b/c we can't find a favorite sushi place in campbell/san jose. read more

I was driving back to my hotel when I decided to do something a little different for dinner... Iactually ate alone in a restaurant! Gasp! I chose Ishi for it's proximity to my hotel but also because the menu resembled that of my fav sushi joints from home. The service was great and I couldn't help but notice the sake specials on the walls... Definitely check this place out if you're looking for sake bombs! My sushi roll was the perfect size and filled with spicy tuna, my fav! The miso soup was standard as was the gyoza. My bill came out to 25 which is on the pricey side, but definitely worth it! read more

Ishi Shima is ok as far as sushi places go. The fish was fresh (even on a Sunday night) and the server was attentive and friendly. The only thing that bothered me about the menu is they only offered nigiri a la carte--sashimi is only offered as plates. You might be able to just ask, but I was just going off their menu. They have all the regular rolls, a few original sounding ones (like the Hawaiian roll: macadamia nut and spicy tuna YUM). Even though we we finished our meal well before the posted closing time, they rushed us out. read more
