Pretty decent spot, wouldn't be my first choice but we celebrated a family birthday here. Ran it over around $500 for eight people. I think my Korean barbecue short rib was around $35 and I must say that the portion size was pretty small. I was able to eat it in one sitting with no leftovers not really worth it at that price point. It tasted good and cooked well though. The service was good but not outstanding. You almost felt guilty asking for things sometimes having to just get it ourselves. They are busy so I understand, I noticed that they wouldn't put the tea kettle down for some reason so we had to keep asking for refills. The fried ice cream tempura was pretty cool and I kind of liked the concept. Overall good place to try out, but there are many other restaurants that I would go to before choosing this one. read more

This was my first time here and my friend had been here many times. It started to rain so hard when I parked, I had to use my umbrella. As I walked inside, they were putting out a bucket to put your wet umbrella. Good thinking ahead. We each got a miso soup. Delicious! I wasn't very hungry so I ordered one roll, the Royal. It's deep-fried soft shell crab, unagi, and avocado inside and salmon, tobiko, and crushed macadamia nuts on top. It had unagi and wasabi sauce on it. It was so good! The only challenge I had was that there was a little too much sauce that each piece fell apart when I picked it up. Of course, it is perfectly fine to use your hand when you eat sushi aside from using chopsticks. The service was great. Great sushi spot tucked in the large shopping center on Camden and Union. There's lots of parking and a decent amount of seating for a small restaurant. The staff were all very nice and attentive. I dined in on a Friday night and the ambiance was busy and lively. I noticed there was a lot of regulars dining in, always a good sign :-). For a sushi restaurant, I was impressed with their vegetarian options! They have vegetarian udon and 5 vegetarian rolls. First time trying this place. Seen it when I pass by, always wanted to try and finally I did. I ordered their tempura shrimp lunch special for $15 and it was good. 5 pcs of shrimp, the batter is just a bit too thick, it came with miso soup and white rice. Soup was not too salty, so it's good. Food came out fast! Maybe it's because there were only two tables that were occupied. Love the simple and clean ambiance. They also have Coke Zero which is a plus for me. read more

I've been coming to Shima a few times a month for lunch over the course of 3 years! Can't believe I haven't reviewed Shima yet, oops. They open at 11:30am for lunch and have a nice menu of something for everyone. My mom doesn't like raw fish but is totally fine for the chicken katsu. My friend I come here with only eats sashimi and it's super good she says! I like baked rolls and get the lion king 10/10! It's a California roll with baked salmon on top. Tonight is the last time we will visit Shima Sushi. Not because of the food (which has always been pretty good) but because of how we were treated. Upon arrival, an employee asked us how many were in our party. When told 3, she walked off without comment. It was weird. When she returned a few minutes later, she told us that we'd need to wait for a table to become available to be seated. When we gestured to the vacant table nearby (set for 5), she told us we couldn't have the "big" table. Ironically, multiple 4-seat tables were occupied by solo diners; meanwhile there were two 2-seat tables empty. I explained that we were short on time and would appreciate being seated at the available table, she unapologetically said no. We left, and won't return or order takeout from there again. I hope filling that "big" table to capacity was worth losing our business. read more

I'm always coming to eat in this shopping center but never really noticed Ishi Shima Sushi until recently. It's pretty dark from the outside so I always assumed it was closed, but it's not! Open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Called in and ordered for pickup. Sushi was ready pretty quick - about 10 minutes. I ordered the flying dragon roll, edamame, and a hamachi hand roll. It was pretty averagely priced for all of that, just over $30. Sushi was fresh, I liked both the hand roll and the dragon roll, would order both of them again, as well as try others. Edamame was a little bland without any seasoning, but still nice and fresh. Excited to come back and dine in next time! read more

Found this place by accident. I was looking for the Armadillo Willy's that was in this strip mall. Its gone! Saw this place and decided I was in the mood for a bento box ( I do not eat sushi!). The food was flavorful & I appreciated they have regular & lower sodium soy sauce on the tables. I got the teriyaki chicken with mixed tempura vegetables. When I'm back in the South Bay and craving sushi, I've really been enjoying going to Shima Sushi. The sushi is fresh and flavorful, with a wide variety of options to choose from. The smaller portion and poor quality of the sushi, the price is much higher than the one I used to go to on Almaden Expressway. I've come here for so many years every Lunch. Then, the food started to taste either old or not fresh. Last night was the last time I will order online. I've ordered around 7pm. Dragon roll, rainbow roll, chicken katsu and Bento box. My husband ordered bento box tempura shrimp. The shrimp tasted like was put in the microwave. I've ordered another bento box for myself. Chicken katsu, the chicken tasted old like almost rotten chicken. my salmon roll, that came with my bento box tasted spoil, I've almost threw up. The worst was I've ordered rainbow roll., it looked like the roll was sitting all day, maybe someone ordered and didn't show up, so we end up getting it. I've spent $103 for a bad dinner. All meats - beef, pork, chicken, and salmon, are all super dry and hard, really difficult just to chew them. Obviously they are not fresh at all (probably cooked a few days ago) and just re-heat and pour some sauce on top. The rice portion is unbelievable too, just like a baby happy meal on rice. This place was great! On the outside, the store seems really dark but once you open the door, you find yourself in this clean and well lit restaurant. The food here is amazing! The sushi is nicely cut, fresh, and tasty! Aside from the great tasting food, our server was the sweetest lady with excellent service! Very few places have a bento box for dinner. I was happy that Ishi Shima did and I ordered one with a salmon roll and veggie tempura. The food was on point. The tempura especially was very crunchy and yum. The service was ok, they had the food ready on time and it was a quick entrance and exit. It might be a cultural thing but they need to watch out for being overly familiar which can make it a little uncomfortable. I wish them the very best. read more

Just writing an update to let everyone know we had a GREAT dinner at Shima. So many restaurants are struggling to reset. Owners are facing staffing shortage, kitchens are out-of-practice, supply disruptions for ingredients are all over the place -- you name it. It's so hard to know what you'll get these days when you go out for a meal. I'm super-glad to report that (at least for our meal) Shima was as good as it ever was -- maybe even better! The Hostess (owner lady, I think) was really nice and sat us in a booth just as we'd requested. Service was lightning-quick. Food was fantastic! The Hamachi nigiri was fresh, tasty, and the pieces were extremely generous. (And yes, in my prior review I swore I'd only eat it as sashimi...) All of the food, including the usual accoutrements (rice, miso, gyoza, etc.) was just as delicious as we remember from pre-pandemic times. While other local restaurants have struggled (including a couple we've given up on...) I'm thrilled to report that Shima is back! read more

Talk about starting with lower expectations based on the other reviews... No one mentioned perfectly cooked Tonkatsu or dare I say large portions and perfect sized rolls! Our favorite neighborhood sushi spot closed down when the owner retired after like 30 years so we have been on the hunt for a new spot ever since. We have been going to the Thai restaurant next door so decided to give Shima Sushi a try and glad we did. We did a take out order of a few different rolls and tempura app and it all was very tasty and the price was right. The order was ready right on time and the food was fresh.
