Since having a good experience with their sister restaurant, Green Tea in Bangor, my wife and I thought we would go here for our anniversary dinner on August 14. We were one of three parties in the restaurant at 4 pm. I counted 1 sushi chef and 3 waitstaff out front. My wife has some food allergies so we asked if the sweet potato in the sushi could be steamed since she could not have the breaded coating that normally goes on. The waitress said we couldn't have this because all the sushi was pre-made. We went out for sushi, there was a sushi chef there, but this chef evidently could not make us sushi? At their sister restaurant, they always accommodated her food allergies. Then when our food came out, rather than placing the plates in front of us, our plates were dropped/slid to us by the same waitress who took our order. She did not check on us, and the vegetables in the dishes we ordered were undercooked and crunchy. When a family member has food allergies, you don't get to go out to eat like most people very often. When you do, it is a special experience. I was really hoping for a better experience to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I'm tempted to give it one star but I'm giving it two just because I'd like to think that these employees had something going on that put them off their game that day. But if this is how they perform consistently, it is not good. read more

I am a non discriminating eater, easy to please with simple and mostly common dishes. Rarely am I extremely critical or post a bashing unless I think it is warranted. I convey common sense realistic expectations representing the down to earth crowd. If the quality of the same dishes vary at a restaurant, that in itself is not a good sign and cannot be accurately reviewed, reviews will be mixed, usually from one end of the scale to the other. This review represents my first and only experience here. We are frequent visitors to Ellsworth from CT with a cottage on Branch Lake here. I've been a regularly returning visitor to the area since the early 60s. Tried Shinbashi for first time this trip. For a Monday night, the place was pretty busy, usually a good sign for a restaurant. Wife had miso soup that she said was good. We had Chicken Peanut and Vietnamese Spring Rolls for appetizers, both were good with peanut chicken being the better of the two. For entrees, I had Lobster Pad Thai that was served piping hot leading me to believe the lobster was over-cooked. Some of the lobster pieces tasted old, none having the sweet flavor that fresh lobster in Maine should have. My wife had the bento box, tempura shrimp and veggies with dumplings, sushi and fresh fruit. Shrimp coating was different, a little heavier than the veggies coatings, both of which we think was too heavy for a tempura, the shrimp was bland tasting, wife liked her veggies better. Most likely the tempura was pre made and frozen, not fresh prepared as evidenced by the different and heavy coatings. Dumplings were nothing special, too spicy for our tastes, sushi was meh, fruit (pineapple, cantaloupe and honeydew) was fresh, not canned. Waiter could use some fine tuning, he never took our empty appetizer plates away, even after he brought the entrees. Not sure what he would've done if I didn't move them so he could put down our entrées, either way, he left empty handed and we had to shove them off to the side so they weren't in our way. Overall, quality is borderline okay, certainly nothing extraordinary, soup & both appetizers were good, entrees were disappointing for our expectations. In summary, we might come back another day, maybe try some takeout, something different, hopefully they have something better than what we had this time. Next time I will ask what their specialty is or what people order the most. read more

When this restaurant came to Ellsworth it became an unexpected hit! The restaurant carries a classy oriental air to it and clearly prides itself on appearance. But feel free to come in casually dressed and enjoy the atmosphere. Staff is engaging and attentive. You can expect to pay a bit more than normal for Asian cuisine, but the food is top notch and well worth it. The menu has expanded quite a bit since opening and the bar drinks are phenomenal. There are rooms available for group reservations if you are looking to hold a company dinner or a birthday gathering as well. Highly recommend you try it at least once. read more

The atmosphere is very nice, but don't take any epileptic or visually sensitive people there. The lights change too much and frequently flicker; it's for ambience, but it's not pleasant to those who are more sensitive. Sometimes the food orders come out wrong. Shinbashi used to be Green Tea - a restaurant located about a quarter mile further down the road. This year, they have moved to the new location at the old Movie Gallery store. The decoration is georgeous, it provides a nice atmosphere in which to eat. The menu is now much more extensive, but the taste has not suffered a bit. Was over charged on my bill on not one item but several. When I told them about it I was told they had raised there prices but we're not going to get new menus and that I couldn't have a refund. After several minutes of trying to explain to them that they wouldn't go into a grocery store and pay more for what was on the price tag or buy a car that was priced one thing but charged more. They decided i could be refunded my drinks... Which was a kids milk.... While I was over charges only 5 dollars what about the fact that this is being done to others who dont notice. Thought we'd try Shinbashi after being underwhelmed by nearby Bangkok Restaurant (Green Curry sauce prepared using CANNED curry powder) and Siam Orchid. We ordered Ginger Scallion Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken starting with 2 orders of their Dumpling Combo. The (6) dumplings per order were little Quarter-sized balls (as in $.25 pieces), comprised of some filling, but most of their weight/volume came from the dumpling's outer skin--less than special @ $5.95 per order. The Ginger Scallion Chicken was in a word....bland---not a taste you'd expect when ordering an entree with that name. Another drawback was that the chicken strips had been BREADED (why?), rendering them soggy when combined in that nondescript entree @ $12.95. While it had an enjoyable taste, the Kung Pao Chicken had the same soggy BREADED (not mentioned on the menu) chicken strips as the Ginger Scallion Chicken. Whoever heard of flour-dredging or breading Kung Pao Chicken ? Shinbashi's answer to chicken entrees seems to be 'Bread + Fry Ahead', then have it standing by to add to customer's selections. C'mon Shinbashi, when a recipe should be stir-fried, stir-fry it when ordered, don't prepare the chicken ahead of time and add it at the last minute. It's disappointing that so many restaurants push BREADED/FLOUR-DREDGED FRIED foods at Mainers--now it seems that even some Asian restaurants have added that agenda. read more

The food was great, but the service was so poor. We had a very rude waiter that would yell at the staff, even though she said she was new. We asked her what kind of spicy sauces could go on veggies, so she said she could bring out a spicy mustard sauce. We then asked someone else who said Kung Pao, Szechuan, among others. Most of the staff were friendly, but unfortunately we had one bad waitress. Like I said, the food was absolutely amazing, but a few mess ups (waitresses fault) made the meal a little bit worse. I've eaten here three times over the past few months. The first time our waiter brought pork gyoza instead of vegetable, which was not the best moment for this vegetarian. The second time was no problem. The third time (tonight) was a busy night in the restaurant and incredibly slow service. They brought my sushi rolls after a long wait, without my companion's entree. I tried to wait for his to be delivered so we could eat together but it didn't show up so I slowly ate mine. He finally just asked to cancel his order so we could move on with our night as I'd already nearly finished - it wasn't really our intention to eat our meals separately. They suddenly brought it after he'd already asked to cancel it and they seemed really confused as to why we might be uninterested in continuing the meal. His entree showed up over an hour after we sat down. The waiter seemed frantic the whole time we were there - I think they really need to hire enough people (both front and back) to actually support their tables. If you like overpriced food court food, this is the place for you. I admit this restraunt has some pluses, like great and friendly service, and inviting asian decor. Beneath the frosting though, this figurative cake is dry, and right in all the wrong places. Take for instance the spring rolls. The vegetables are crisp and delicious, but the sauce is thick, and sugary. And the Bento Box #4 eel was great, but the Bento Box #3 chicken was mediocre, and my compatriot said he would have sent it back. The best thing I had was the lobster tempura, which was worth the price, and an exciting new experience. Everything came in very big helpings, and as I said was not worth the price for the most part. Asian fusion is supposed to be creative and fun while this restraunt was dull and unimaginative. I hold firm with my 3 star rating. read more

Fantastic place to eat! Went there after deciding to forgo The Bancock. The sushi was fresh and delicious and had some of the best presentation I've ever seen. I had the Tofu Pad Thai and found it to be very excellent (the tofu was actually cooked correctly!). Their Miso soup was to die for. I found their quality to be much better than, say, Yoshi's. My daughter and I went here last night. We loved the atmosphere! The seats for the booths are unique and comfy. The food was great at the first bite. The Yaki Soba noodles were cooked just right. The customers included a wide range of families, couples, and friends. I would highly recommend this new restaurant. Oh, check out the bowl sinks in the restroom, too. I went to Shinbashi twice in the first week it was open, and it was stellar. Not just good, but stellar. Innovative but still reserved cuisine reminiscent of Nobu, with Jalapeno tobiko and hamachi served with tiradito. Today: No more ordering from the sushi chefs. Neither of the chefs speak anything but Chinese. So, me sitting at the sushi bar is now a waste. Two of the fish on their menu (not marked seasonal) are out. My martini comes half empty. The fish is very very fresh, but not great in flavor. The scallops lack any sweetness, and the uni has no depth. Perhaps just my luck. However, the tai is not cut well, and the pieces have to be rolled to fit in my mouth. Same with the tuna, which has a rainbow sheen. I find not one, but two scales hiding in my sea bass. A waiter (I guess?) stands 3 feet behind me and to my right, breathing heavily through his nose. I can neither hear the loud CNN tv or the bad pop music clearly. I am underwhelmed. I may come here again, but I doubt it. It seems like any other crappy fusion place these days, which is awful, because it had SO MUCH promise.
