just ordered some takeout and it was inedible! tasteless slop. Tiny pieces of scallops smothered in mayonnaise heaped over a flavorless CA roll. More flavorless eel in a roll that was like gruel with cheap canned bar-b-q sauce on the side. I could not eat either dish. It was disgusting in my mouth. $38 down the drain, but better there than in my stomach.

Chirashi Bowl + Green Tea To-Go

I ordered pick-up from here for the first time tonight and upon walking in to grab my food, I suddenly wished I was dining in instead! The ambiance was so cozy and inviting, with soft ambient music playing. Little red Valentine hearts looked so cute adorning the walls of this adorable, dimly lit, intimate, little Japanese spot. A friendly woman greeted me at the register and asked if I was here for the pick-up order. I nodded, she had me pay and sign a receipt, and it made me smile when she said, "Arigato." I definitely need to dine in next time. When I got back to my room, I pulled the chirashi bowl out of the bag and practically started drooling. My stomach growled loudly. The presentation made it look almost too pretty to eat, but I was starving, and even though it was pretty, I was for sure going to eat every last morsel! The fish was fresh and melted in my mouth. The different flavors mingled together for a nice umami feel, and when I was almost finished, I tried my best to slow down and really savor the last few bites. The iced green tea paired perfectly with the chirashi bowl. It's not sweet at all and has a mellow, earthy flavor, just as one would expect from authentic green tea. For ~$38 including tip, I would say that the price is worth it for what you get. The portion size was plenty and I wasn't hungry afterwards. I would have had room for a hand roll or some mochi, but since this was my first time ordering from Shintaro, I decided to just get one entree item. Next time I will dine in and I'd like to try the nigiri, amaebi, the blue crab handroll, and maybe the chicken karaage. Hopefully I'll be back soon! Arigato Gozaimasu!

My favorite. Great for sushi lovers and newbies. You don't have to get the boring rolls anymore and can venture in confidence down my list for the best Sushi. These are beginner friendly. Shima Aji Nodoguro For a firm texture- Giant clam Halibut. Halibut fin is great as well. Seared lightly brings out its "flavor" probably not for the newbie, not fishy but will have an after taste. It's a must tho! Black snapper If you really want to go to flavor town and enjoy spice. Get the fresh wasa

I have not been here in quite a while. I'm glad I came back.Tanissa took care of me & was very friendly and attentive. I started with the seaweed salad, which was perfect. Then I had the spicy tuna cut roll with very light rice and it was very fresh. Then I had the yellowtail cut roll and that was fresh as well with nice chunks of fish! I then had the three-piece tempura shrimp with vegetable appetizer and requested only sweet potatoes as a vegetable, and they honored that. Very large pieces of shrimp and vegetable. Just crispy enough and very tasty. Sake was very hot. Prices are reasonable! Nice soft music playing in the background and a very clean restaurant. Enjoyed my visit!

great pre show experience!! We went twice, but the funnest part was the sushi boat! Very nice service, great price on japanese whiskey!

Came here because we were craving sushi and have yet to find a go-to place (spoiler alert this is it from now on!). I had a picky sushi lover with me and he enjoyed it! Everything was super fresh and the cuts were very melt in your mouth. The chicken karaage was great (the sauce was phenomenal) and the gyoza was also tasty. It's a cute little spot that has a lot of seating with traditional sushi chefs in the secondary room. Special shout out to Miho who was a wonderful server! The location has a small lot in front. People come and go quickly so it wasn't too hard to find parking on a wednesday. With that said please note a lot of the spots are for 30 so make sure to get one that isn't one of those (tends to be the ones right in front of the shops). You can also walk here from the Hollywood and highland parking lot (a few blocks).

    Scallop and California Rolls

Shintaro is quaint and cozy. Hannah was a lovely and personable waitress and attended to me well. The service was relatively fast, and the food is fresh. That being said, I would say that the food is largely forgettable. It's a nice place if you need a quick bite to eat, as there is a lot of parking space in their lot, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here as it's on the pricier side relative to the value offered. Spicy Scallop Cut Roll ($15.95) Rating: 4.2/10 - The scallops were fresh but lacked the special tenderness one might expect from a great scallop. Moreover, they were missing that distinct, slightly sweet umami of the sea. The spicy sauce that they coat the scallops with is neither spicy nor tasty; it sort of overwhelms the palate without contributing much. I was disappointed with these and would not recommend them. Fried Calamari ($14.95) Rating 5.0/10 - I definitely didn't receive any "yuzu wasabi" sauce as advertised; I was given a "spicy mayonnaise" instead. To my surprise, the spicy mayonnaise was inoffensive and had a smooth taste. The calamari is fried along with jalapeño rings, which added a nice touch of spice. The squid itself is considerably chewy, compared with other calamari dishes I've had, and the overall flavor is mild. California Cut Roll ($10.95) Rating: 5.5/10 - A worthwhile purchase at the best price point of the night. A California roll made with real crab meat is a hidden gem in the food industry. For what it is, it's well made, but the quality of the rice and crab are not going to be spectacular in this price range. I would highly recommend this item if eating here.

    Such beautiful presentation!

Wow! This place is bomb!! How is this not on the list of "places to grab a bite before a show at Hollywood Bowl". We got right in, super cute inside. Sushi was fantastic! Service great. Everything was great! Get here people! It's some damn good sushi!

    Soft Shell crab

This place has been on my list for a while so happy I finally got to try it. Shintaro is located in a small strip mall. A small parking lot and street parking are available. They provide plenty of indoor seating and the interior atmosphere is romantic and relaxing. I ordered a salmon hr, baked crab hr, and the soft shell crab appetizer. Everything was delicious and fresh. Soft shell crab was amazing, the best I've tried so far. The staff was professional. Overall, enjoyed my time here. The food was great, the staff was kind, and they have a lovely ambiance. However, they are on the pricier side so just be mindful of that. Tip: If you come with a party of 5 or more they automatically included an %18 tip on your bill.

Making a reservation was very easy, and everything went smoothly from start to finish. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted right away and seated promptly. The ambiance was warm and inviting. The restaurant is a bit dimly lit, but it really adds to the cozy and upscale atmosphere. One thing I immediately noticed was how clean all of the grills were. We chose the AYCE option (around $55 per person), and the pricing for kids was very reasonable. Our 5-year-old was charged a reduced rate, while our 3-year-old ate free, which was a nice bonus for families. The selection of meats was excellent, with plenty of options to choose from. They do have a 90-minute dining limit and a surcharge for excessive leftovers, but that wasn't an issue for us because everything was delicious. The appetizer selection was surprisingly large. We enjoyed the beef fried rice, noodles, a sushi roll, crispy tofu, chicken karaage, and shiitake mushrooms. The crispy tofu turned out to be spicier than we expected, so just keep that in mind if ordering for kids. However, spice lovers will probably enjoy it! The chicken karaage was a huge hit with the kids, especially with the spicy mayo on the side. The shiitake mushrooms were also incredibly flavorful and well-seasoned. We also ordered crispy rice spicy tuna, we loved it too! What really stood out was the service. Every server we encountered was kind, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Instead of simply dropping off food and walking away, they took time to check in, ask how we were doing, and connect with us. That personal touch made the experience feel special. We only ordered water since we had already had plenty of drinks earlier in the day, but they offer a variety of beverages as well. For dessert, we tried the mochi ice cream special--two for $5--which was a fantastic deal. In San Diego, it's common to pay around $5 for just one mochi ice cream, so we were pleasantly surprised. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and are so happy we chose Oku-Niku for my birthday celebration. Great food, excellent service, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a memorable dining experience. We'll definitely be back!

If nothing else, I always make an effort to squeeze in at least one new restaurant in their lineup. For one, I get to sample what each restaurant considers to be their most popular menu items or exclusive dishes. Also, it's often a tasting menu that offers a little bit more. More like a foodie's bonus prize, just for participating. Yakumi looked good this time around. Probably because I'd eat sushi any day/every day, if I could. And I was able to find a quick prix fixe style sushi solution without roshambeau'ing with myself for hours, deciding on what to eat. YAKUMI BOX + THE DineLA MENU On the regular menu, the Yakima Box is $29 and no drink's included. During DineLA week, this filling lunch choice was just $25 and came with a shōchū cocktail as a refreshing bonus. It included: + Sunomono or seaweed salad + 1 piece of tuna sushi + 2 pieces each of yellowtail, salmon, and albacore topped with fried shallots (Note: It's not the fresh green scallions with ponzu sauce recipe) + A choice of 2 classic rolls like 2-piece baked crab roll, or 4-pieces of yellowtail jalapeño, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, avocado, and California roll (Note: The crab roll was buttery and tasty; the spicy tuna was standard) + My bonus drink: Mango Lychee Shochu The fish was fresh, the mango lychee cocktail was refreshing. Both were on the lighter side and pleasant for a lunchtime meal. INDOOR SEATING + OUTDOOR PATIO Sit inside or outside? To settle the debate, I did both while waiting for my lunch date to arrive. The warm, sunny patio was lovely, but there are only a few spots in the shade during certain times of the day, even with the awning drawn. Indoors, it's quaint and mirrors the koi fish artwork that graces the corner of the restaurant's exterior. It adds an authentic seafood-centric, Japanese charm to the ambiance. Service was prompt, although it wasn't a very busy time. Just across the street at Alfred Coffee, however, the second wave of a caffeine rush hour--needing their daily fix--rolled by as we paid. For me, on the other hand, the light shōchū buzz and pleasant stroll to my car was a foodie's bonus I'd come back for again.

I'm not a fan of supermarket sushi as it's different. If you are, then you may like Yakumi. Or, don't be quiet like me and speak up. We soon got a good spot and ordered the shrimp ceviche and the pan fried dumplings for appetizers. The ceviche was served on a bed of crispy noodles and it was refreshing and satisfying. The dumplings were crispy, not greasy, and flavorful. For dinner, we got 2 orders of japchae and 3 orders of bibimbap. With 2 Korean-born children and having visited the country, those are among our family's favorite dishes. And they did not disappoint. The japchae noodles were just right. They were not too firm and not too soft and well-seasoned. With a mixture of veggies, meat, mushrooms, eggs, and that delectable sauce, the bibimbap tickled and satiated the tastebuds.
