Went there to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. I enjoyed the presentation by the cook and the food was great, as usual. I ordered the rib eye steak, Sumo cut. I was REALLY disappointed since at least a quarter of the steak was all fat that should have been cut off by the butcher. I DO NOT eat the fat and feel that the extra $7 for the Sumo cut was not worth it. I brought home at least half of the steak and some of the vegetables and fried rice. After re-frying it, I cut off quite a bit more fat that I could not cut at the restaurant. The left overs were very enjoyable. The staff was aware that it was our 50th anniversary but we did not feel that we got any recognition for it like anyone celebrating a birthday does. The ambiance is very nice and is almost identical to a Shogun restaurant we went to in Oklahoma City in June this year. The noise was so loud that I had trouble hearing the cook and had to mute my hearing aids. There were seven other family members with my wife and I and all of them enjoyed the evening. read more

A fun place to go for a birthday dinner with friends. First time coming to Shogun. Went on a Friday evening at 7, and luckily got a parking spot in the back lot but it was nearly full so plan ahead. It's best to have a reservation as they are longer meals with tables for 8. They sat us once our whole party arrived and took our drink orders pretty quickly. It took about 45min to an hour for the chef to arrive after we sat down but that's the nature of these types of restaurants. They only have so many chefs and they're at the table with you for a good hour cooking so plan on it being a bit longer meals than a usual restaurant would be. The food was pretty good. Very well seasoned and literally right off the grill. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to the chicken fried rice because it was by far the best thing. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. They will work with you if you have any dietary restrictions and are very polite. The only thing that would've made the interactions better would've been if they came to refill our water more often. It's been years since I've ate at Shogun. I came during lunch and got their lunch combination. I ordered the ribeye and sesame chicken,miso soup, veggies and (sub the rice for chicken fried rice)! Everything tasted great. I also requested for a regular table instead of watching the chef cook for you but if you want a show you can choose that option. But it was definitely easier to have a conversation with your party sitting at a regular table. (Lunch ends at 3pm) 3-5pm is their happy hour so I ordered the salmon nigiri, crunchy roll and the white peach sake! They have a pretty good variety on their happy hour so I'll def be coming back. Most people have been to a restaurant like Benihana (feels like I just swore typing that name on a review for this restaurant - lol) but San Diego has a Teppan-Yaki restaurant that rivals it and is not as expensive. It's not super cheap, but these type of places you are paying not only for the food but the experience, and that is always good here. I've been twice now with groups over 20 people and all of us had a blast. The food is pretty standard for a restaurant like this, but it was good. From the appetizers, to the main meals, I did not see anyone in our group upset about what they got. Some ordered meals that were prepared in the kitchen and others, like me, had it prepared right in front of us, with all the standard features, jokes, and fun. One thing interesting about this place is if you have a large group, they will not seat you until everyone in the group has arrived. That might bother some but I love it because it makes everybody get there on time. Lol. I also like the fact that they did work with us when making our payment. We did not do individual checks for everyone, although they were willing. We broke up our groupn into three or four people and paid that way. They also worked with us with the number of people we had with a fairly last-minute reservation of about three days for a group of that size. I've been twice, and I would go again. read more

This place wasn't very clean. There were ants in the bathroom stalls. The oven wasn't completely clean and my plate had some weird hard stuff stuck on it. The chef was pretty cool though. The food was good but I just feel like the place needs to be cleaned. They need to do a better job at cleaning the place. Everything was pretty good except for Toby, he was great! The instructions to ensure we weren't one minute late when we made the reservation was a little odd, but we were there plenty early. They weren't packed so not sure the demand ti be timely. We sat to the left side of the entrance and the lights were kind of bright, almost like a hospital. We have been coming to Shogun Temecula and Corona for several years. This was our first time at the San Diego location, and we were reminded why we have kept coming back to Shogun after all these years. The service was phenomenal! Came in with a big group to celebrate my brother in laws birthday, and our server Cay made sure each one of us were taken care of (from our dietary restrictions and pickiness!). Not once did he miss a beat and took care of everything without us needing to ask him for something. I've been in the service industry and this guy has it down. Shogun was the best hibachi however they are under new ownership and it's terrible now. Everything is overly salty now. Pepper is added to seafood before they did not do that. I find that this place will always be very good to me. I had ordered the Rib Eye with Colossal Shrimp and fried rice. I had got my steak cooked medium, and WOW that was so tasty it practically melts in your mouth! I could not even imagine how delicious the filet mignon tasted! The sushi was about average, but I would much rather save room for the main entrees and not eat the sushi. The alcohol selection was plentiful, however quite costly. Expect to pay a decent amount of money but know that it is quite worth it. I found that the fried rice was a little to peppery for me today but all the other times it had not been an issue. For the Steak and Shrimp combo they give you a soup and salad in addition to the meal as the main entre is getting cooked in front of you. They have a lunch special that I am excited to try in the upcoming future. The chef I had was a little quiet and it was hard to hear what he was saying because of the mask. The tricks were the usual: onion train, volcano onion, fried rice heartbeat and the pretending to throw the chef sharps at one of the customers at the table. However, I do always enjoy those small little jokes. I find that if you are eating at a table where there is a cook in front of you, you might as well enjoy the show instead of completely ignoring them. If that is the case, just eat at the normal dine in tables. The server at my table was Karisma. She was very nice and did a decent job at attending to the two parties at my half circle table. This place does a very good job at making sure to acknowledge any allergies that the diners might have. Many foods will be cooked in different oils, cutting boards, stovetops, etc. The place could use a little TLC or a renovation. Some of the tables have more lighting than the others and it just seems like not everything is quite as uniform in the restaurant because of these minor but noticeable differences. The outfits are always cute from the hosts to the chefs. For birthdays they give you a little foldable hat and sing you a cute little birthday song along with a free scoop of ice cream with chocolate and a cherry on top. read more

One of my families favorite places in San Diego for celebrations. We always make a reservation and it's a true lifesaver. The workers are always so nice and the food is amazing. I dream about the fried rice. The restaurant is nice, split into three sections, the sit down dining, a sushi area that used to be the bar and the teppenyaki section. I went to Shogun today for the very first time with my Uncle to celebrate a belated birthday lunch!! The parking lot is extremely small so when it does get busy, arrive as early as you can especially because this lot is also right next door to Kogi KBBQ which is super popular! They do have plenty of street parking. Keep in mind that this is an experience so you will be seated with other people at your table. We had a party of 3 and shared with a family of 4. I ordered the Filet Mignon Combination with Scallops from their Dinner menu (They only serve lunch until 3pm). We each got a miso soup, salad with their ginger dressing, and chicken fried rice. Everyone also got steak sauce and creamy sauce to dip our food in. The food was flavorful and I think this is a great hefty meal that can never go wrong! For the price, you get your meats, seafood, rice - all in one meal! Thankfully we passed out on the appetizers because the portions are so HUGE you'll still be needing a box to go. I came here for Mother's Day and it's a Hibachi style place. I was told reserve ahead of time but that could be because of Mother's Day. There's a big selection of food choices. Plus there is a bar inside as well. I ended up buying off the lunch menu. New York Steak with Sesame Chicken and Karaage Chicken. Steak and Sesame Chicken was good. We had an enjoyable time going out for dinner with the family for my birthday. It had been several years since going here and was looking forward to it. Food: Flavors were great and very nice portions Service: Great service and friendly staff Ambience: The room was louder than I remember, but when there's 10 grills with 10 people at each one it makes sense. Only issue was the chef did not provide the two sauces for dipping and no one noticed until he had left and we were almost done eating. They were very apologetic and took 10% off the bill which we appreciated. They also provided sauces for us to take home with our leftovers. On top of everything - turns out we made the right choice to come here instead of Benihana's. That was our initial idea, but went to Shogun instead. The other family at our table DID go to Benihana's and despite having reservations were told that there was a two-hour wait so they called Shogun and they were accommodated. Even though this place has been around a long time, I went there for lunch for the first time. There was a line to get in when they open! We were a party of just three. Most of the others were larger parties and they were celebrating something. And I now know this is a great place for just that: celebrating with friends. Easter Late lunch was ruined for me and my son! We arrived at 1:30 and was reserved a spot for 2 at 3:30. Was told by the nice young lady hostess that she could probably have sat by 2;30-2:45. Came up to the booth again and asked but this time it was a young man and an older older man that answered that it wasn't going to happen. We than told him that we were going to the bar to wait. And older man said ok. We sat down back at the waiting area around 3:23pm when we hear that they called out a group of 6 and a group of two, which I saw and heard the couple arrived after us and there was no room and would have to wait. I did see that the older man knew them. I than saw they brought that couple back to another area. So I was thinking they probably made a mistake and would call us. The older man kept looking at us, but didn't ask us anything. But while looking at us, I heard him say people lie. Which I was questioning why he would say that. I wanted to go up and ask but my son insisted for me to be patient. I waited a another 15 minutes than went up to ask a new hostess to see if we were still on list for 3:30pm. She than told me that it showed we were seated! She went to ask what had happened and apparently someone told her that I said we would eat at the bar. The young lady than said that they could try fitting us in, if we could wait for the next sitting table and it was going to be another 20 minutes but by this time I didn't know if I should trust if I would get a seat. I am Very much disappointment I don't know if Shogun is under new management! But that older man pretty much didn't care to lose a customer or 2! It's upsetting because both me and my son hadn't been here in a while and we were looking forward to eat here again. Been here countless of times, but never gave it a review so I guess it's time! Shogun is a good alternative for Benihana. Some would say that it's better than Benihana since it's not as commercialized. I honestly think they are about the same... Only difference is the price. While Shogun is still pretty pricey, it's not nearly as pricey as Benihana & not as crowded. We popped in for a Friday night dinner & the restaurant was full, but not overly crowded. You have to CALL to get a reservation, so be aware of that. There are plenty of parking spaces at the BACK of the restaurant, so don't feel discouraged when you see the front lot full. There is also street parking. The service we've received here has been great. No complaints! The food here is also very, very good. One thing I will say that Benihana does better is their chicken fried rice. It's not as flavorful here, but it gets the job done. The pricing is as follows as of Feb 9, 2024: Gyoza (6 pcs) $9.50 Ribeye & Shrimp $42 Filet (mignon) & chicken $40 Upgrade to fried rice: $4 The meals we've had here were also really great. No complaints there! The show is always cool to see, but let's get some new tricks up in there. Also, they need a revamp. The place doesn't exude "fancy" like Benihana does.
